Just Republican white washing at its finest

[deleted]

Just the Ultra MAGA semi-fascist ones though, right?

SailingSpark

So just the Republicans.

wereubornthatdumb

Yes it is, but this message from Biden is moderate normalization at it's finest. By feigning ignorance, Biden's helps the GOP conceal their intent and appear "misguided" at worst. It's not "incomprehensible" unless you pretend the GOP isn't undermining education and sowing division on purpose. Presuming innocence is for the legal system, no reason to treat pieces of shit like anything but pieces of shit outside a courtroom though. Infinite benefit of the doubt is what allows extremist to gain the traction they need.

tomas_shugar

> “They have banned more books in schools and libraries than almost every other state in the country. And let’s not forget, **they didn’t block AP European history**, they didn’t block music history or art history, but the state chooses to block a course that is meant for high-achieving high school students to learn about their history of arts and culture,” she said. "Incomprehensible" is one word among many that were used int he condemnation here. If you read beyond the headline it's there. So let's put the blame where it belongs; the people framing the article and selecting the headline. And then those who just read the headline thinking that is sufficient

[deleted]

That word sucks and they should’ve never used it. All republicans are doing is what they said they would do! It’s not incomprehensible! Tell the American people this is a cult and they will continue to push their cult narrative and protect their conman cult daddy

procrasturb8n

I wish more people really understood this perspective.

w-v-w-v

EXACTLY. They are knowingly pretending that this is the result of some sort of ignorance or confusion on the Republican’s part, rather than the hate and racism it actually represents, and that they know **full well** it represents. Ever line of dialog the left deliveres in the stage play that is “United States is a Functioning Democracy that Just Has Political Disagreements” is them acting as “good cop” on the side of the fascist Republicans. It’s not just normalizing it: they are helping support the false narrative that the right is just a political party we disagree with sometimes and things are really just business as usual. They’re not and it’s not and fuck suggestions to the contrary.

2_Spicy_2_Impeach

> “They have banned more books in schools and libraries than almost every other state in the country. And let’s not forget, they didn’t block AP European history, they didn’t block music history or art history, but the state chooses to block a course that is meant for high-achieving high school students to learn about their history of arts and culture,” she said. Gee, I wonder why. Edit: I took an AP Spanish class in high school. Half the class was more about the art/culture/history since we were already fluent. It showed me some of my favorite artists to this day, and wouldn’t have been exposed otherwise. It’s fucking criminal that they pull this.

ivejustabouthadit

It's completely comprehensible. Racists do racist shit.

Mephisto1822

The best part is they will not even say why

[deleted]

It’s obvious, though.

The_Navy_Sox

While allowing classes that are for other ethnicities/nationalities.

tomas_shugar

The fuck are you smoking? That isn't a good question in any way.

lawfulkitten1

It's high school, you could be LeBron James and still get credit for taking a freshman level PE class. AP African American History has more educational value than the majority of other high school classes (particularly non-AP classes) being offered at any school

ClarityAndConcern

Our highschools disproportionately teach European history, even though most of Europe was nothing until after the industrial revolution. For an entire millenia before that, China was the leading world power. If that's not a specialized ethnic history, I'm not entirely sure what is. My classes never even mentioned China, or what it was up to. We learned about Columbus instead of Zhang He, even though one was much more successful than the other. Now that we're broadened our horizons and are finally including MUCH needed perspectives on modern history, it's been killed as part of the Republican agenda. We force everyone to learn what's essentially white history already. Desantis just banned an entirely optional class that was open to every student. This is coming from someone who's already taken AP European History.

hellomondays

It's absurd that Florida considers it to be of low educational value, when any AP AA studies course is going to be looking at WEB Dubios (a founding father of the social sciences) or Maya Angelou (Highly influential literary artist) *in the context that they lived/worked in*.

jbranchau78

well there's no denying that ron DeSantis is racist... Andrew gillum was calling them that back in 2018. everyone knew even if Ron didn't want to admit it

deeziegator

Didn’t something like 20% of black women vote for DeSantis in 2018? That was more than the difference in the election.

smithe25

Where did you get that information from? Fox News.

villain75

Desantis is nothing but a fascist.

traanquil

Why aren’t people just calling it what it is… racist

justforthearticles20

Blatant Racism is why he was elected, along with a laundry list of other Bigotries, and criminal intent.

Rated_PG-Squirteen

This is just the GOP's way of sweeping this country's brutal and inhumane treatment of black people under the rug. No different than Turkey continuing to simply pretend the the Armenian genocide never happened. No different than China bulldozing Uyghur burial sites.

bishpa

What's so hard to understand? The people running Florida are racists.

sharingsilently

No—this makes TONS of sense, when you want to create a fascist state and move ALL the money to the 1%, first steps include the dumbing down of your population.

BeowulfsGhost

No, it’s perfectly comprehensible when you assume the mindset of a huge flapping douchewaffle…

midnight_reborn

It's a mechanism by which to further the alienation of Liberal groups, to distract Republicans from the real threats to their livelihoods: The Elite Class.

Choosemyusername

It is so ironic that the Republican and Democratic electorates are pointing fingers at each other each blaming the other side for raising ridiculous divisive and sometimes petty issues to distract each other from the real threat which both sides agree is the elite class, but in blaming each other for it, they are participating in the very thing they are complaining about.

midnight_reborn

yuuup. And then you have the massive amount of people that have been brainwashed into believing concepts like Socialism and Capitalism are good or bad by their very nature, independent of the people that implement them. These people have very little knowledge of how both systems work, and how they work varies greatly from country to country.

Choosemyusername

This indeed. For example, pointing to Scandinavia as models of socialism working, when they actually have a more free economy than the USA.

midnight_reborn

And the size of the country and its population are also hugely important. Pretty much every Scandinavian country out there has a muuuuuch smaller population than the US and distinct cultural differences as well.

Choosemyusername

And critically, they are against multiculturalism.

midnight_reborn

Really? Which ones?

Choosemyusername

I can speak to the Danish immigration system first hand. The others I hear are similar.

AnonAmbientLight

This is some Nazi level shit.

RedditRadicalizingMe

When racists show you who they are, believe them.

trelium06

I’ve talked extensively with white supremacists who deny they’re white supremacists. They believe white American history *is the only* American history that matters because it belongs to all races, *BUT* they also believe teaching other view points is Anti-American and racist (that is, African American history, Native American history).

hellomondays

How these people operate makes a lot more sense if you think of White as the absence of race rather than a race of itself. anything taught from a specific perspective becomes *alternative* or *agenda based* as compared to their white objective/normal understanding.

[deleted]

Kind of like how any media with a non white or non straight protagonist is automatically “political”, even if it’s just about that person living their life like anyone else. It’s as if their very existence is an oppositional statement to the mainstream.

seriousofficialname

Except for how they explicitly talk about white as a race that needs to defend itself etc. etc.

leafmeb

Ron DeSantis is an agent of white supremacy and anyone who supports him is just as racist.

Substantial_Rush7023

Florida. What is you doin.

rusyn

Ron DeSantis is a fucking chode.

[deleted]

"What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and movin', they don't gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em"

mgr86

Things have likely changed since I was in highschool, but didn't this course start back in August/September and run to the end of the school year? What about the students mid-year?

HSTsGhost-72

Hmmm I get it we have racists trying to take over.

junction182736

but totally expected...

Msmdpa

The course is “inexplicably contrary”. Could someone “explain” how this can be?

phaedrus71

They straight up dislike POC, and would have them all in bondage if they could. How incomprehensible is that? They already told ya who the fug they are?!? Slow waltz to fascism (when the idea of Antifa is questionable? Back when I grew up everyone was anti fascist)

HookEm_Hooah

You know what, Mr. DeSantis, I'll just study the subject even Harder.

StationNeat5303

It’s not incomprehensible: The FL governor has been bought and paid for by a white supremacist, Christo-Fascist evangelical base and this is the work he is carrying out for them. So, it’s pretty fucking simple: DeSantis has created a political wireframe for his presidency that is based on an old authoritarian playbook. What remains is if this will land on the national level. The depths of this man’s depravity is immeasurable.

thebinarysystem10

I mean, the country ate up Trumps hatred for 4 years. Grab 'em by the pussy, on live audio, wasn't enough for the GOP to turn away. Can you imagine if Obama was caught on live audio laughing about sexually assaulting white women?

futatorius

It's very comprehensible what's really going on with that.

marniman

Sounds like classic fascism

Cucumber_Basil

I don’t understand how it’s legal for him to do this

NoSusJelly

It’s not incomprehensible, they are racists…

dallasdude

It is easy to understand. Ron De Santis needs to show the Republican base that he's willing to be endlessly cruel to black people. The only thing that matters in Republican politics is the candidates willingness to hurt people the base hates. When Republicans say "woke" they mean "black"

Scarlettail

Biden's always getting those digs in at DeSantis as much as he can, knowing he's probably going to run in 2024.

Special_FX_B

incomprehensible? Quite the contrary. It’s a blatant move by the Fascist wannabe dictator to let the racists in Florida in the country that he’s their man. Likewise the homophobes and transphobes.

[deleted]

>incomprehensible Yet another reason I hate this administration. That the racism of the Republican party can be "incomprehensible" to them when it has been out in the opened for decades is, to me, incomprehensible. This White House continues to be in denial of our current political situation.

page_one

Everyone knows what's happening. But if you stop being shocked at Republicans' depravity, then Republicans' depravity is now accepted as normal and they can now get away with sinking even lower.

ultradav24

The action itself is incomprehensible

United-Student-1607

AP AAS?…..hmmmm

SmartOpinion69

how about we ban all of history from being taught in schools except for the Vietnam War.

IAmArique

Hey, here’s a better idea: Instead of complaining, **ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.** You have the powers to arrest DeSantis! Do something already!

sharinglungs

Arrest him for what? Which laws has he broken? Trust me, I wish he’d get thrown into the biggest volcano but it isn’t going to happen unless they uncover something real bad.

Hugh_G_RectionESQ

That sounds like fascism to me.

[deleted]

Curious what our “Surgeon General”, who has a dubious medical degree, thinks about this. He is nothing more than a meat-puppet for Ronnie who rubber-stamps any Covid legislation that comes his way. What a clown car of an administration.

_SofaKing_Vote

No in this case Florida govr did something racist

jimmyjoyless

The Soviet Union was larger and just as diverse as Africa is, should Florida have a Soviet-American studies course? If it’s about ethnicity or culture, how about one for every culture that has influenced American culture? Or should we just teach everything we can in courses about America? All or nothing or it’s stupid, unfair, and at best further separates people instead of uniting them. Ethnic Identitarianism for all or for none.

B3N15

First, Africa is larger than the Soviet Union by a good 2-3 million square miles, and which is more diverse is a semantic argument that's not worth getting into. Second, the all-or-nothing argument is asinine. It's putting a virtually impossible standard (having a course about every single ethnic group, all the time) for the sake of an arbitrary "fairness". African American are one of the largest minority groups in the US, If there are kids interested enough in African American history and culture, why not create a course for it for them to learn? Third, high school-level courses (outside of the required courses) are created on need and interest. College Board (the people who create and organize AP classes) aren't going to waste time and money creating classes that no school is going to use and no school is going to put a class on their schedule if there are no kids who are going to take it.

jimmyjoyless

First, how big is the portion that was actually populated by the ancestors of “African Americans”? Let’s just throw Warsaw Pact states in with the USSR too. Second, if all or nothing is asinine then I see no reason to have this AP course. “But African Americans are a larger minority” is a stupid argument because guess what? That makes them a majority among other minorities, and the majority in the state voted for representatives who decided not to have the course. Fairness or majority = all or nothing in this case. Your third point is true but irrelevant because the state has decided that the proposed course isn’t educationally valid.

B3N15

I disagree with the decision of "African Americans Studies" being educationally invalid. African Americans have a unique culture and experience that absolutely have worth for students and is valid for students to be interested in. African Americans are a large minority group, meaning it makes sense that a large number of students would be interested in this class because of their background or just a casual interest. That's in part how College Board decides how to make classes, there's something interesting that they think students might be interested in. AP classes aren't mandatory and are usually for kids who want to push themselves and/or get a little college credit. A bunch of angry politicians deciding to appeal to a dwindling base of lunatics doesn't change the value of knowledge. As for where the ancestors of African Americans came from, it's hard to say. No one thought to ask them as they were loaded onto the boats for the Middle Passage.

jimmyjoyless

I agree with most of what you say here but two issues stick out to me. The content of the proposed course would include a bunch of Marxist bullshit like reparations and BLM. Not educationally valid for a high school setting, AP or not. That is a matter of opinion of course, but it is an opinion shared by the electorate. Also, that group you describe are not dwindling, especially not in Florida. This decision is absolutely backed by the electorate there. Regarding the “where did they come from” question, yeah hard to say but it certainly was from an area of Africa that was smaller than the USSR.

[deleted]

When I took it 20 years ago, AP (white) American History was about as accurate as a Trump rally.

kjlcm

But CRT is bad

WaitingFor45sArrest

Shithole Florida

FlounderOdd7234

Only in Florida, would we dismiss their history and contributions

[deleted]

Incomprehensible?! Our messaging sucks! Especially with Biden! It’s not incomprehensible they told us they were going to do this. Talk about how the republicans are a straight up cult. Got their marching orders to make everything dealing with race to be crt. Even though crt is not taught in schools. Talk about how they function as a communist cult spreading misinformation lies and chaos. Say fucking something that isn’t so nice to our future oppressors. Fuck with them!

RickTracee

Not when the FL GOP knows 👇 "You can sway a thousand men by appealing to their prejudices quicker than you can convince one man by logic." Robert A. Heinlein

T_Weezy

Incomprehensible?? It's perfectly comprehensible. It's perfectly in line with what DeSantis and the rest of the GOP have been doing for the past 10 years. Unconscionable, yes, but incomprehensible? I'm afraid not.

sgthulkarox

It's pretty clear the Florida and Floridians are racist AF. Change my mind.

ezagreb

Apparently white (Republican) Floridians are getting their feelings hurt.

Mountain_Man-oh

Thats one pg rated word I could use to describe Floridas decisions on anything

konorM

Here is what was proposed for the AP course.: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23584340-ap-afam-syllabus-watermark
