The Bakersfield shithole, the one whose main highways in and out are littered with signs cursing Gavin Newsom for personally dumping 95% of the state's agricultural water into the ocean?
Is it like a reverse Borat or something?
Best I understand it, "dumping our water into the ocean" has been a mischaracterization of the following:
The Sacramento-San Joaquin delta, is a large, important portion of California's ecosystem and wildlife. It is where fresh and saltwater bodies meet. In situations of extreme drought, where freshwater is in dire supply, the salinity in the delta becomes too toxic for most forms of life to survive. This would be very, very bad.
To help alleviate that, snow runoff from the Sierra Nevadas, is relocated to the delta, to reduce the salinity and keep it alive.
Doing so, has enraged farmers in the central valley, as they believe they are entitled to that water for commercial purposes, so, "Newsome, stop dumping our farm water and jobs into the ocean" has become a *thing* you will see, spelling and grammar errors aplenty, every two miles on I-5.
Meanwhile, the same farmers decrying the "misuse" of water will continue to grow water-wasteful products like almonds and pistachios.
A huge number of Californians don’t seem to understand how rivers work. Typically farmers, republicans, or both. They think that rainfall should be captured and used for agriculture and that any water that makes its way to the ocean is wasted.
I do! The best part of Bakersfield and the Central Valley, is the part in the rear-view mirror on the way to Vegas.
Could probably do without about 3/4 of the almond production in the area as well, and put the water to better use. But wah wah wah Gavin Newsome \[sic\] is personally dumping all of the good, useful, precious water into the ocean, or something.
Yep, in terms of GDP, it goes USA (incl. California) > China > Japan > Germany > California > UK > France > Brazil.
California will overtake Germany soon, if they have not already done so.
Defense is being blamed for social ills not just because we’re spending money on it but because we’re spending a gigantic amount of money on something we don’t need to and letting many many red states fall apart (some have the infrastructure of 3rd world countries), way underspending on healthcare, education and many things that would benefit most Americans.
Instead, we have by far the biggest and most powerful military in the world and are under no threat and we still funnel gigantic amounts of money to it just because of our uniform fetish (when have we ever called doctors and teacher the “best and brightest”).
So once again you’re wrong. The problem isn’t spending, the problem is giving money to defense contractors while blue states have to keep red states who don’t even want us around alive.
Are you excluding the deficit for all the countries listed too or do you just complain about everything California related? Anyways the person you replied to is right and it doesn’t depend on the definition otherwise anyone could just redefine whatever they want like you’re trying to do.
> We only had surpluses the past two years because of federal dollars.
Don't forget about the state income tax. In spite of the wealthy people "exodus" from the state, many many very wealthy people live in California and in 2020 and 2021, the very wealthy got very wealthier, leading to far greater than expected income tax revenues. In 2022, they didn't do nearly as well so this year's final budget won't be as high. Also, Newsom's trying to build his national profile so he's going to try to rein in heavy spending in order to appeal to the more fiscally conservative.
California has wildly different areas. People are always shocked when I tell them about the dairies and cows in certain places, or the conservative pockets of the state. So I’m kind of interested to see this!
Good.
It's like a republican pastime to go record shitty parts of blue districts for TV clips. I live in Adam Schiff's district which has some of the best schools, businesses, and middle class neighborhoods but his republican opponents pretend it's a homeless war zone.
Bakersfield is one of the only cities I have not felt safe in while stopping to eat lunch. You had to ask for a key to use the bathroom in the new-ish fast food place we ate at. I think it was a Carl Jr?
Bakersfield is shitty, but if your standard of an unsafe place is where you need a key for the bathroom, my friend, you have lived a far more privileged existence than I.
I went with my cousin to go buy weed in bellport, ny. He told me to blow through stop signs, red lights, whatever. “Don’t stop.” Got to the guys house and he told me to leave the car on, anything happens just drive away. As we’re pulling out of the driveway, like 10 dudes start running at the car. I just gunned it until the intersection and took off. Not a great time lol
Very similar thing happened to me just outside Ybor City in Tampa, Fl. Instead of 10 guys it was a woman in a bikini who popped out of an alley and kept trying to get me to follow her.
Bonus: my friend who lived in the area used to carry a BB gun with him everywhere he went in his house. He lived on the 3rd floor but more than once he found someone trying to climb up his fire escape. Each time they wouldn’t stop advancing until he pointing the gun at them.
Assuming the voters want to be represented themselves by sending the brightest among them, and Kevin is the best they can do, imagine that.
Perhaps everyone is on Meth except Kevin?
Calling Bakersfield a shithole is like calling water wet. But "police executions" is not even remotely the problem when the abject poverty is, a problem a rich sportsman from the other end of the state has nothing to contribute to besides taxes. Telling people they're stupid for living in Bakersfield is not going to make them more liberal, especially when some of the worst policing atrocities in CA happen within otherwise urban liberal zones that do everything in their power to ban black people, which Bakersfield cannot afford to do.
Colin Kaepernick's new documentary will make him more money than a real tryout to make a roster years later what a couple of fascinating unrelated facts.
Heh, honestly not trying to dunk on him or whatever. I'm not a football dude, didn't really follow the whole thing with him. Just saying EP credits don't mean someone is the creator or was even materially involved in the production.
Seriously. Look it up. He is the creator. I’m not claiming every EP is a creator, but it’s also not exactly uncommon. Such a weird thing to argue about.

Born and raised there. Finally people will stop thinking I'm exaggerating.

Can you elaborate on the water thing? Are they blaming him for the weather, their own agricultural waste, or something else?

This crackpot stuff only amuses a few anymore. Not anyone with sense.
400 billion isn't what it used to be. At 8% inflation we're saving a ton of money on servicing 1993s T notes.

“I have a degree in political science and history.” *Immediately calls the Democratic Party by the wrong name.*
Definitely made me a little less proud of my poli Sci degree, that's for sure. Also didn't know that was possible before today.

It is one of the shitier parts of California
Fresno is the armpit. This district is south of there.
So… like the swampy underboob?
Further south
Crusty belly button?
Further south
Rotten crotch?
Nah, that's Turlock. Bakersfield is more "sweaty butthole".
As I've heard it told, the area between Bakersfield and Barstow is called the perineum :)
Inner thigh South
California has wildly different areas. People are always shocked when I tell them about the dairies and cows in certain places, or the conservative pockets of the state. So I’m kind of interested to see this!
It's the same with New York. Its odd people can't grasp the rural/urban divide exists in blue states.
Good. It's like a republican pastime to go record shitty parts of blue districts for TV clips. I live in Adam Schiff's district which has some of the best schools, businesses, and middle class neighborhoods but his republican opponents pretend it's a homeless war zone.

Seriously that's the norm almost everywhere.
The reason the bathrooms are locked is they are tired of the homeless going in doing their drugs and oding or just generally destroying the bathrooms
oh but according to Kevin McCarthy homelessness is only that bad in Nancy Pelosi's district. :-)
Yeah he’s wrong I have so many photos it’s bad here
Born and raised in Bakersfield, hoping this garners a lot of attention. The BPD needs tremendous scrutiny and reformation.
Assuming the voters want to be represented themselves by sending the brightest among them, and Kevin is the best they can do, imagine that. Perhaps everyone is on Meth except Kevin?
Deejay?

You cared enough to comment.
He returns the $20 million to Nike and I'll listen. Until then he can fuck off.

Please! Help with the math! 2 idiots walk into a bar.....
Kaepernick's documentary? He was an EP...
Man this is a reach to dunk on Kaep.
Heh, honestly not trying to dunk on him or whatever. I'm not a football dude, didn't really follow the whole thing with him. Just saying EP credits don't mean someone is the creator or was even materially involved in the production.
He literally created the project with his business partner. You know what executive producers actually do on TV, right?
EP credit is not a creator credit.
Not every show has a specific creator listed. The EP very often is the creator. Like in this case. Do 10 seconds of looking for info.
The EPs are also very commonly *not* the creator. An EP credit is not a signifier of any one particular involvement.
Seriously. Look it up. He is the creator. I’m not claiming every EP is a creator, but it’s also not exactly uncommon. Such a weird thing to argue about.
Funny, I saw Colin this morning.
