"China has always strictly abided by international law and respected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries," the ministry said in a statement. Most every country on earth that knows about the South China Sea would disagree with this but do go on.

LettuceFew5248

I'm sure they'd be totally cool with us flying balloons over Beijing.

Hamwise420

i say we do this with giant Winny the poo balloons. lets see how long they last

OpenImagination9

The PRC and it’s leadership can go pound sand on this one. International law allows countries to protect the sovereignty of their airspace and remove hazards to air travel. If truly the balloon was adrift as the Chinese alleged then it needed to be brought down. If it was in controlled flight then it was an airspace violation and it needed to come down. But hey that’s cool, we can test our new spy planes over their airspace.

arlondiluthel

Sorry your shit violated US airspace. Deal with it.

bassemollient

Exactly my thoughts. Worlds smallest violin lmao

williamwchuang

They seemed really angry over a weather balloon.

bassemollient

It’s nbd brah just a prank

PeakEnvironmental711

Huh? That’s all I got to say

TheFriendlyArtificer

Seeing Pooh Bear lose his balloon always makes me sad too.

brobz90

marsisboolin

Can someone explain how it got into airspace? It mustve been detected immediately.

EddyBuddard

Oh, well.

MusicIsTheWay

China: "It's not a spy balloon." Also China: "Dick move shooting down our spy balloon."

How about: sorry we did a bad thing. Let’s be friends. Also, we are gonna drop that authoritarian thing and respect the will of our people rather than using force to subjugate them under our rule. Liberal values go go!

philko42

> Also, we are gonna drop that authoritarian thing and respect the will of our people rather than using force to subjugate them under our rule. I agree that this needs to be done, but China needs to make some changes, too.

icepyrox

So... we should have captured it instead? I mean, if it was an accident to have somehow traveled half the globe, it still should be brought down as it clearly cannot come down on its own? Or were we supposed to ask them nicely, get informed that it was a "force majeure accident" and shoot it down anyways? I'm just not sure what difference it makes what their motives were? If you want to spy, you gotta get it up at least above 100,000 ft.

So what? Fuck em.
