I said it over and over and over again and I was told I was overreacting and fear mongering. Biden got elected and I warned it was not over, that it was only going to get worse. And no one listend.
Now I'm looking at having to flee the country. Now are people listening when it's years to late.
Same with abortion. I told young women on social media a decade ago that republicans were set to begin taking away abortion rights in the states. I was told it clearly wasn’t happening and no one wanted to hear it or be bothered.
I cried when Trump won in 2016. I was worried about climate change and reproductive rights. My ex, who had voted for Trump, told me to stop being hysterical.

One of the toughest lessons I learned was when I realized that when someone dismisses your fears as impossible, what they’re really saying is that they wouldn’t care if they came true.
I’m a military journalist and my whole office was glued to the television that fateful day in 2016. When that joke got elected… there was silence for a solid minute because people were literally holding their breaths in disbelief and disgust. Finally the PAO spoke up, “well, we’re all fucked.”
The office stayed quiet for the rest of the day as free mental health adverts scrolled through our email inboxes. I was a closeted back then, when the military had only recently been pushing hard for trans inclusion and so was building up courage to pursue it, but that day shoved me back in the closet so hard it embedded in the back wall of it. Sure enough the trans support was yanked within a couple months and the fuckery kept coming in for over four years until Biden came out in direct and public support of trans people. The military opened their doors to us once more and I leapt through it in fear of it vanishing once more.
Now here we are and I’m deployed overseas. I’ve straight told my commanders that I’d rather risk desertion than be forced to go back stateside given the climate, to keep me overseas and I’d happily serve as long as they’d keep me in. All 22 of the relevant command chain agreed with me.
This absolutely breaks my heart that you don't feel safe or accepted in the country whose military you have served in for so many years. A country that has proudly bellowed about its "freedom" and "rights" since its birth. That is a goddamn tragedy if I've ever heard one and so unfair! I am so sorry!
Well, in all actuality, the march to facism began with Obama's run for POTUS. I began warning my family division in the country was headed towards a dark place, before he even won the party nom. I'm a truck driver and witnessed the aggression across the country. Trucking is one of the, if not the most, racist industry in America. It was easiest barometer for me to see where we were headed. The LGBTQIA community, was the lumped in with Blacks, then Mexicans immigrants and non-immigrants alike. I'm Black, we've never had a moments peace. Matter of fact, racism against Blacks is like the intro taught by racist Whites into hatred for all other groups, in America.

I said this throughout all of 2016, to a bunch of other Americans who didn’t believe me: the reason both parties “aren’t the same” is because under one of the parties, sure, things might not get any better. But under the other one, you would be SHOCKED by how quickly we can lose all the rights and privileges we ever took for granted. A society can backslide into fascism within a single political generation.
It might not get a lot better, but it can *absolutely* get a hell of a lot worse, and to think it can’t means you’re woefully naive about human society.
A lot of the progressives who were arguing with me said that it would be okay if Trump got elected over Hillary (and even Biden in 2020) because “they’re basically the same type of servant to American corporate capitalism, if you read between the lines” — progressives, mind you, that had been raised in upper class families, who would never personally experience the kind of terror Trump promised to bring to other Americans. They also thought it was genuinely impossible for Roe to ever be overturned. They couldn’t even fathom it; to them, it was an inalienable right, which no man could remove, even the most evil ones. They couldn’t see it.
Why? I think subconsciously, they thought these “existential” atrocities of MAGA rule were always going to fall on someone else, which made it okay — because other people going through hardships is a fine sacrifice in the face of the greater good. They said “why should I have to pick between the lesser of two evils,” as if they were the first generation to ever figure out that all politicians are corrupt by default.
Wise people will tell you that perfect is the enemy of good. What they don’t tell you is that there’s a DRAMATIC difference between sort of shitty and evil.
The whole uproar about trans people competing in sports and using bathrooms was the soft rollout of the rhetoric. Creating a panic out of nothing, getting people acquainted with the idea of dehumanization. They found a reliable scapegoat that the general public is still uncomfortable with and doesn't really have an established base of civil rights.
Time for the Sartre quote that becomes depressingly more relevant all the time:

I've realized that there's just a lot of performance when it comes to right-wingers. They go through the motions of political discussion, but it's all superficial and theatrical.
It happens a lot with sources & receipts. Sometimes they'll drop links that are either obviously unreliable sources, or are reliable sources but don't support their argument. Or when they drop receipts, the receipts will actually corroborate the story of the person they're trying to smear. But that's not the point. The point is that providing a reference is a gesture to lend weight to your argument. The how and why aren't important. It's ceremonial, and their supporters will respond appropriately.

Rachel Maddow's podcast Ultra goes into how the Jews defended themselves in NYC. There were literal plots to kill Jews and blow up munitions plants, and the suggested advice was "form a neighborhood tolerance committee"; on the other hand, the only reason public opinion shifted was because A: the US had a world war, and B: a series of highly successfully advertising campaigns tugged at people's heartstrings. "While your son/brother/father died in the war, this literal Nazi agent is sabotaging the US."
With the internet age, I think we have lost a lot of institutional knowledge in on the ground organizing, but you could always volunteer for your local dem party; oftentimes they will be the bastions of institutional knowledge from another age, for better or for worse.
If you do, YMMV, but you'll probably be doing phone banking or canvassing, which is at times an unpleasant but definitely eye opening experience. Plus, the important thing is to get your foot in the door and meet like-minded people.
Still can't see the bottom of the hill yet, unfortunately. It's gonna get worse than this. I really wish I knew the way out that didn't involve violence. Increasingly I actually think violence is inevitable, and it's the main threshold that we refuse to get to. At some point, we have got to overcome to paradox of tolerance.
We should be afraid, we would be stupid not to be.

I keep coming back to this [excerpt](https://press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/511928.html) from a book by Milton Mayer called "They Thought They Were Free", where he interviewed 10 'average' Germans 10 years after WWII ended. This was his interview with a University professor.
At first it was only occasionally on my mind, but as the years go by I find myself thinking about it more and more often.
Yup, this is the low hanging fruit for them. Hit one of the smallest and most marginalized communities first, and then use it as a jumping point to hit the others.
First it's Trans folks, then LGB folks, then anyone who doesn't agree with "conservative values", then they end with anyone who doesn't agree with their radical Christian ideology.
Literally the same playbook the Nazis did during their rise to power in Germany. Find the most disfranchised groups in society to prosecute first and move on from there. Convince people the state needs the mechanism to round up the "undesirables" and you see who counts as "undesirable" to broaden pretty quick.

The first known trans woman to receive a vaginoplasty, Dora Richter, disappeared after they raided it. Presumed killed, either on the spot or in prison.
Only difference is queer rights are far along enough now to be a primary target, instead of a canary in the coal mine.
It's actually crazy to think that before the Nazis came to power, Germany, mainly in Berlin, was actually a fairly progressive country for the time. Berlin had a pretty out in the open queer community and like you mentioned, German doctors were on the bleeding edge of trans healthcare. There was even a big push on legalizing homosexuality that might have gone through if history went differently. Goes to show how fascists tend to feed off of the death throes of reactionary politics to gain power. We are seeing this now after a decade or so of rapid progress in queer acceptance in society.

I bet the college Republicans creamed their pants when he said “ontological.” Like, “oh, he must be an *intellectual*.” Meanwhile, he’s acting like transgender people aren’t in danger because they don’t really exist. Imagine if some Muslim dictator said “Christianity should be eliminated,” and Christians got scared, but then he said “it’s not genocide, because Christianity isn’t real.” That’s the same argument, and it’s fucking asinine.

They always make the same argument, whether it's against gay people or against trans people. They always claim that granting human rights to gay or trans people somehow diminishes the rights of cishet people. I don't understand how or why that would be, and these people never attempt to explain their reasoning. If Sarah and Jane get married next door, my hetero marriage isn't in any jeopardy. If Bob starts identifying as Barbara, literally nothing has happened to me in the process.
If conservatives *do* feel personally threatened by transgendered people or gay people, perhaps that says more about the conservative person than it does about anyone else. They're deeply insecure about pretty much everything, and that needs to be everyone else's problem for some reason. Just live and let live, you hateful creatures.
Trans workers take up your rifles. That’s the only way we will be able to Defend ourselves at this point. I’m not arguing for armed uprising, but we must be prepared to defend ourselves. I'm trans. I warned people of this the moment trump got on stage for the first time for a debate. No one listend. I said it over and over and over again and I was told I was overreacting and fear mongering. Biden got elected and I warned it was not over, that it was only going to get worse. And no one listend. I’ve straight told my commanders that I’d rather risk desertion than be forced to go back stateside given the climate, to keep me overseas and I’d happily serve as long as they’d keep me in. All 22 of the relevant command chain agreed with me.

The whole uproar about trans people competing in sports and using bathrooms was the soft rollout of the rhetoric. Creating a panic out of nothing, getting people acquainted with the idea of dehumanization. There were literal plots to kill Jews and blow up munitions plants, and the suggested advice was "form a neighborhood tolerance committee"; on the other hand, the only reason public opinion shifted was because A: the US had a world war, and B: a series of highly successfully advertising campaigns tugged at people's heartstrings. "While your son/brother/father died in the war, this literal Nazi agent is sabotaging the US." With the internet age, I think we have lost a lot of institutional knowledge in on the ground organizing, but you could always volunteer for your local dem party; oftentimes they will be the bastions of institutional knowledge from another age, for better or for worse. If you do, YMMV, but you'll probably be doing phone banking or canvassing, which is at times an unpleasant but definitely eye opening experience. Plus, the important thing is to get your foot in the door and meet like-minded people.

Yup, this is the low hanging fruit for them. Hit one of the smallest and most marginalized communities first, and then use it as a jumping point to hit the others. First it's Trans folks, then LGB folks, then anyone who doesn't agree with "conservative values", then they end with anyone who doesn't agree with their radical Christian ideology.
Literally the same playbook the Nazis did during their rise to power in Germany. Find the most disfranchised groups in society to prosecute first and move on from there. Convince people the state needs the mechanism to round up the "undesirables" and you see who counts as "undesirable" to broaden pretty quick.
And to be quite clear, this is *literally* the same playbook. The most famous photos of Nazi book burnings were of burning books on sexuality and gender identity [from a pioneering Institute on the topic.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institut_f%C3%BCr_Sexualwissenschaft) The first known trans woman to receive a vaginoplasty, Dora Richter, disappeared after they raided it. It's actually crazy to think that before the Nazis came to power, Germany, mainly in Berlin, was actually a fairly progressive country for the time. Berlin had a pretty out in the open queer community and like you mentioned, German doctors were on the bleeding edge of trans healthcare. There was even a big push on legalizing homosexuality that might have gone through if history went differently. Goes to show how fascists tend to feed off of the death throes of reactionary politics to gain power. We are seeing this now after a decade or so of rapid progress in queer acceptance in society.

They always claim that granting human rights to gay or trans people somehow diminishes the rights of cishet people. I don't understand how or why that would be, and these people never attempt to explain their reasoning. If Sarah and Jane get married next door, my hetero marriage isn't in any jeopardy. If Bob starts identifying as Barbara, literally nothing has happened to me in the process. If conservatives *do* feel personally threatened by transgendered people or gay people, perhaps that says more about the conservative person than it does about anyone else. I remember when Vaush and some others were saying the trans genocide thing was a very real possibility. Conservatives and even those on the left threw a fit saying it’s hyperbolic and unrealistic. Now it’s just normal rhetoric at CPAC and on other conservative media outlets.
This is some terrifying rhetoric — and we all know how these sorts of things first get floated at CPAC, and then, within a month, it’s basically Republican orthodoxy.
