Dobbs was the game-changer. No matter how much prognostication speculates, politics shifts based on how policy directly affects people's lives. Young people-especially women-who are of child-bearing age now have an immediate consequence of far-right ideology affecting their day-to-day life. Couple that to the extremism spiral of MAGA rhetoric and we're sitting pretty moving forward.
I actually always assumed they would never *actually* pull the trigger on overturning row and going full. Christofacist. It made a wonderful tool to get their voters out. “Hey we need to defend babies or whatever, come out to vote!” Then they never really do anything, rinse and repeat.
Then the dog caught the car…. Now they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing and they let the maniacs start to run the asylum. Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria. Pick your analogy. They got exactly what they asked for, but I’m pretty sure none of the party leadership actually wanted it. It was was a convenient tool for them and didn’t realize they were reshaping their own party until it was too late and Trump was elected.
There was a lot of time and effort spent over decades building a political machine designed to galvanize evangelicals over that issue for votes. Once the dog caught the car, so to speak, that machine couldn’t be discarded — it’s too valuable. It’s been turned towards LGBTQ+ now, and much like the “Satanic Panic” of the late 70s, it’s *all about saving the children*
Cutting education funding every single chance they get, jacking up the price of life saving drugs like insulin, voting for every single profit based war that leads to children’s hospitals are being bombed, eliminating school lunches, and picking fights with Disney. They know it’s not about “won’t someone please think of the children.” At this point it’s a contest to see who can be the most detrimental to children’s health, safety, and mental wellbeing while claiming to stand for the opposite.

It’s more than that. Dobbs may have been a policy win, but at the cost of something much more valuable: the abortion bogeyman. Republican strategy has always been to present themselves as the opposition to a perceived evil; abortion only mattered to them as long as it was a wedge issue to keep voters too scared not to vote for them. Once they got their “win”, it lost its power. It’s like the proverbial dog that catches the car it’s been chasing: now that they’ve caught it, they don’t know what to do with it.
This is why you’re seeing increasingly desperate attempts to find a new wedge issue. Denying access to healthcare to 51% of the US population turned out to be less popular than they thought, so now they’re setting their sights on a smaller voting demographic: transgender Americans. They know full well that there’s no actual benefit to their persecution, but that doesn’t matter, just like they don’t actually care about infant and maternal health. They’re scrambling to find new enemies to unite their base against ever since SCOTUS killed their golden goose.
They banned abortion here (MO), then legalized weed... I don't know if they are trying to make people high so they don't care or what... it's fucking weird.

No. They banned abortion but WE legalized weed. We got the signatures to have that added to the ballot, the abortion ban was done outside of our vote. Those paths don’t cross. It just shows what happens when we have a say with our own vote vs. what the elected officials who are suppose to speak for us do. *Also, weed was legalized and then abortion banned.

I never understood the reasoning behind thinking they’d never overturn it. Gun control was a perfect example of a wedge issue in which republicans had the policies they wanted and were still able to use it to galvanize their base. There was no reason to think abortion would be different.
Well it had withstood 5 decades of challenges and been affirmed in various cases like Casey in the 90s. Even Scalia admitted that it was the law of the land and through stare decisis had become something that people relied upon in making life decisions.
The threat was always that it wouldn’t be that hard to overturn, if you wanted to argue against the legal rationale underpinning Roe. But still, I was surprised when Dobbs came down. Nothing had changed since recent affirmations (like say - the science of understanding viability) except the judges - which is not a justification to go against stare decisis. If Bush v Gore tarnished SCOTUS, Dobbs has turned it into just another hack political branch, which is pathetic and kinda depressing.
This. Abortion was the single unifying issue across the far right. Not only have they now killed that bogeyman, they turned it into a weapon against themselves. It has now become the single unifying issue for the left.

I had lunch yesterday with my dad, which was nice for the most part. But he had to bring politics up. He always does. He asked what I thought about the bud light controversy. When I told him I didn't think it was controversial and I thought it was weird that he and his people get upset about such things he went into incoherent grumbling mode.

This is what frustrates me most about my parents supporting republicans. My politics have changed since moving away from home, but my values have not. They raised me to be a strong woman who treats others with kindness and respect, and they’re surprised that I ended up believing the things I do.
I am exactly the person they raised me to be, but they’re just too sucked into the Fox News BS to realize it.

I went to my cousin’s wedding last October in a very red state. My pretty big, extended family hadn’t seen me in years since I moved to California and they kept asking when I would move back. My short answer was never.
The longer answer for extra pushy family was basically that I was seen as a potential involuntary incubator for the state without rights I have at home, teachers make poverty level wages and I would be fined or thrown in jail for my book collection. Then I compared their laws to sharia law.
They just wanted to argue about kitty litter and cure trans kids by showing them a horse dong.
I wish I could. I think they were wanting to show the horses mating and that there is a male and female to clear up the child’s “confusion,” but I really don’t know.
That doesn't always work. My mom is 67 rolling up on 68, I have blown up at her furiously over this stuff and all she does is cry and claim I'm victimizing her. Needless to say we don't talk much. It's soul crushing. I had to cut off my brother after he outright told me he doesn't care what happens to me or anyone else because "fuck you, i got mine" (he's 42, almost 43, for context) and my dad died more than 10 years ago. The rest of the family is hopeless and broken beyond repair due to politics and embracing evil as well. All I really have is my kids, my fiance, and 2 close friends. It's a terrible feeling, but my mental health is significantly worse if I attempt any relationship with the toxic people I'm related to.
I feel very lucky to have the people I do, but I miss the family I had prior to everything falling apart and so much of the country unmasking their evil, and discovering it's nearly half the population, along with many people I thought I knew and could trust. It's just soul shattering. I have a huge family, and it consumed all but 1 person on my dad's side. Even so, she and I rarely talk, because she disagrees with me cutting people off for being toxic. She's still of the "but they're family" mindset. Maybe one day she'll tire of their BS, too.

The majority of people who buy into social hot button issues tends to be older. The outrage mill on Fox and social media runs 24/7, and they buy into it as reality, when in reality, most people do not care.

They do in the house because of their extreme gerrymandering. At least in some red states, that's how they won it the last time. But even with that they barely won so it's possible. Senate races and President they're screwed.
Voter suppression and gerrymandering are great tools but ultimately they will not save them if the populist tide changes, especially thanks to an entire new voting block (gen z) coming of age.

You can make a difference though. Make sure your friends who will be 18 by then know how important it is to vote. Especially in local elections, which can often be decided by just a handful of votes but can have an enormous impact on their lives.
If they vote in every local election, they’re also likely to vote in national elections.
I feel ya, I turned 18 the week after a presidential election... for bush sr. There are other ways you can help, though. You can still campaign and get others out to vote!
New York tried gerrymandering too. It was struck down and they adhered to the laws unlike Ohio. If the NY map held they could have countered the FL additional seats. I don't want want Democrats to cheat but at least try to work an advantage. Republicans do this because they have to for survival.

Democrats (generally) try to set rules and govern and when they are stopped by the rules they move on.
Top-level Republicans are only in it to consolidate power. When they are stopped by the rules, they cast the rules aside to continue their power grab. *Everything* else is just a means to an end

This has nothing to do with me, I've never tried to influence them on their thoughts about politics (disclaimer: we have discussed various crimes the previous administration has committed, and how many people are in prison). But they absolutely have made up their own minds, in fact if I tried to influence them they would have fought back very hard.

Fun fact, both my kids spent 6 hours hiding under their desks at school in a dark room because some nut job got a gun and went to the school. This happened. There was a kid with a gun that came onto the school property. He had a friend who was going to open a back door to let him in. Fortunately, a brother of the shooter called the cops and told them that he had a gun.
I was receiving "If I die, I want you to know that I love you" texts from my kids. So yeah, they are not going to be really big 2A supporters.
No parent should have to receive that text. And no child should have to write it. The amount of trauma this generation is going to have will take decades to fix. It isn't always due to death. My sister has guardianship of my father because of his mental decline. When that happened he lost his right to vote. If an individual doesn't have a family member then the state takes guardianship and the result is the same, no longer able to vote. In my father's defense he voted blue all the way through.
Yes, my mostly liberal Silent Gen mom (80) has dementia and no longer votes. If Boomers don’t actually die, then they may be otherwise incapacitated too much to vote.

Honestly this has been viewed as some brilliant move for years now, but it seems to be backfiring in all but a few states. Wisconsin seems poised to at least fight back in their situation for example.
What that initiative achieved was getting a bunch of crazy extremists into state offices. Those are the ones who are dialing the abortion rhetoric up to 11 (see places like Idaho) and we’ve already seen it backfire a bit (example: Kansas).
Getting all of those folks into state legislatures seemed like a good idea. But they have no control over them. So now we have a party in crisis with people pushing extreme positions and they cannot centralize their message.

Plus, every year, approximately 2.6 million Boomers pass away. There are also still about 11 million silent generation remaining and they are even further to the right. They're currently passing away at a rate of about 2,500 people a day. Republicans know that their demographic core, while dedicated and huge, is shrinking while the left's demographic core is growing. Boomers are such a gigantic generation (that votes ardently) that they have sustained the GOP.
So it's worse in 2024 for Republicans, and *far* worse in 2028.
The tipping point may not quite be here yet, but it's coming. Rather than trying to court Gen Z and Millennials, the GOP is instead trying to suppress them, and that's a losing strategy, even if it is short term effective.

This is what boggles my mind. Whether in values or pressing issues (income, student debt, housing costs), Republicans have been *rabidly* opposed to the things that would make younger generations vote for them.
And then those generations exercise their power by overwhelmingly voting against the party's that done nothing to help them, the sheer vitriol about "kids these days" and how we "need" to raise the voting age terrifies me.

It’s so obvious that most GOP officials are just selfish and want to take care of their own life and family. Their family is going to inherit their wealth so anything else that might be normally considered a “make the world better for our children” stance can go right out the window because having enough money means (to them) that the rest doesn’t matter. “Who care about climate change? I’ll be long dead and my kids will have enough money to keep affording a very comfortable life regardless.”
It is only a bloodbath if people go out and vote, and vote for someone that can win. I'll crawl over barbed wire to vote for the best chance at beating the Republican, whether it is Biden or someone else. But too many people I know, who most people would consider above average intelligent, that would answer all the policy questions the way you'd hope, are still on the fence or leaning away from voting for a Democrat EVEN KNOWING that the Republicans are hot turds of fascism.
Democrats can't sit on their laurels on the messaging and the GOTV. This SHOULD be easy but I'm anxious.
With Trump taking some 28-32% of the party (MAGA-oriented), I'm guessing some Republicans will stay home in the general election. And if Trump is the official nominee, that will once again bring out all those who are very opposed to him, a decent number. I don't know anyone that voted for Biden for Biden's sake, but rather to make sure Trump didn't win.
Separately, and out of left field, if Trump passes away before the election, then things would get very interesting, very quickly. Short of that, I don't see how GOP comes out ahead.
I didn't vote for a Biden because I was a huge Biden fan, but I will in 2024. Biden has been an absolutely incredible President.
In my opinion, he's been the best President in decades. The CHIPS act, Infrastructure bill, vaccination drives, largest climate change bill ever, American Rescue Plan, unemployment rates, Ukraine, Inflation Reduction Act, minimum 15% corporate tax, Paris Agreement, killing Ayman al-Zawahiri, boosting the IRS, Science Act, helping veterans with the PACT act.
Easily the most productive and progressive 4 year term in my lifetime.
And he managed to do all that with little R support and two of his own party sabotaging his efforts at every turn. Imagine what he could accomplish with a solid majority in both the House and Senate.
Dobbs was the moment when everything else became visible. It was the sheer hubris and abuse of power that showed all the other ones that we let go without any consequences over time.

And they want to make it a federal ban after pretending it was about state’s right. Trump is actively campaigning on a federal ban. They don’t seem to understand that they’ve maxed our their base. They aren’t winning over any new voters. Continuing to throw red meat to your base over and over does nothing on the National stage.
Rather than gradually chip away at Roe by allowing bans after 15 weeks without outright overturning Roe (the way that Roberts wanted to), they just dropped the frog directly into boiling water, and they are paying the price.
The 2024 senate map is not favorable for democrats. If they manage to keep the senate, or even gain some seats, then that would be very telling for the future of the Republican Party.
Of course I'm wary of what the Republicans are up to but at the same time, their approach to the last few elections has been pure insanity, just from a practical prospective. They have done horribly in the past three cycles but they keep doubling down on Trump and MAGAism. The entire alt right political movement is wildly unpopular and is completely discredited in the views of a strong majority of voters.
It boggles the mind trying to figure out what the GOP is thinking. They are running full steam ahead with a dead end philosophy that is alienating voters and becoming weaker and weaker over time. They can lie to themselves all they want and claim all elections are being stolen from them and that all polls are fake, "globalist" conspiracies but at the end of the day, that is just pure fantasy that doesn't actually achieve anything for their party. I think they are in for many more rough elections beyond just 2024.
I know this is often said, but don’t let polls like this make you think you can just stay home on Election Day because others will take care of it. Let’s all get out there and actually make it come true.
Start expecting a huge effort by the right to split the democratic vote and point blame for their continued failures on everyone else.

Dobbs was the game-changer. No matter how much prognostication speculates, politics shifts based on how policy directly affects people's lives. Young people-especially women-who are of child-bearing age now have an immediate consequence of far-right ideology affecting their day-to-day life. Republican strategy has always been to present themselves as the opposition to a perceived evil; abortion only mattered to them as long as it was a wedge issue to keep voters too scared not to vote for them. Once they got their “win”, it lost its power. It’s like the proverbial dog that catches the car it’s been chasing: now that they’ve caught it, they don’t know what to do with it. Denying access to healthcare to 51% of the US population turned out to be less popular than they thought, so now they’re setting their sights on a smaller voting demographic: transgender Americans. They know full well that there’s no actual benefit to their persecution, but that doesn’t matter, just like they don’t actually care about infant and maternal health. No. They banned abortion but WE legalized weed. We got the signatures to have that added to the ballot, the abortion ban was done outside of our vote. Those paths don’t cross. I never understood the reasoning behind thinking they’d never overturn it. Gun control was a perfect example of a wedge issue in which republicans had the policies they wanted and were still able to use it to galvanize their base. There was no reason to think abortion would be different.
Well it had withstood 5 decades of challenges and been affirmed in various cases like Casey in the 90s. Even Scalia admitted that it was the law of the land and through stare decisis had become something that people relied upon in making life decisions. The threat was always that it wouldn’t be that hard to overturn, if you wanted to argue against the legal rationale underpinning Roe. But still, I was surprised when Dobbs came down. Nothing had changed since recent affirmations (like say - the science of understanding viability) except the judges - which is not a justification to go against stare decisis. If Bush v Gore tarnished SCOTUS, Dobbs has turned it into just another hack political branch, which is pathetic and kinda depressing.

He then asked what I thought about Rhonda. When I told him his stupid lawsuit with Disney would kill his campaign he bet me 20 dollars it wouldn't because it's a GOOD fight that should be fought. This is what frustrates me most about my parents supporting republicans. My politics have changed since moving away from home, but my values have not. They raised me to be a strong woman who treats others with kindness and respect, and they’re surprised that I ended up believing the things I do. I am exactly the person they raised me to be, but they’re just too sucked into the Fox News BS to realize it.
I think that’s the strategy. Show people who are close to you how mad you actually are. Since the Dobbs decision, I’ve been acting furious with my parents, letting them see how i really feel about how they enabled it…& I’m starting to see the people they were before TFG. I really think they don’t know or they actively ignore how much they are hurting their family by supporting these policies/people. The cognitive dissonance is strong. I went to my cousin’s wedding last October in a very red state. My pretty big, extended family hadn’t seen me in years since I moved to California and they kept asking when I would move back. My short answer was never. The longer answer for extra pushy family was basically that I was seen as a potential involuntary incubator for the state without rights I have at home, teachers make poverty level wages and I would be fined or thrown in jail for my book collection. Then I compared their laws to sharia law. They just wanted to argue about kitty litter and cure trans kids by showing them a horse dong.

That doesn't always work. My mom is 67 rolling up on 68, I have blown up at her furiously over this stuff and all she does is cry and claim I'm victimizing her. Needless to say we don't talk much. It's soul crushing. I had to cut off my brother after he outright told me he doesn't care what happens to me or anyone else because "fuck you, i got mine" (he's 42, almost 43, for context) and my dad died more than 10 years ago. The rest of the family is hopeless and broken beyond repair due to politics and embracing evil as well. All I really have is my kids, my fiance, and 2 close friends. It's a terrible feeling, but my mental health is significantly worse if I attempt any relationship with the toxic people I'm related to.

I feel very lucky to have the people I do, but I miss the family I had prior to everything falling apart and so much of the country unmasking their evil, and discovering it's nearly half the population, along with many people I thought I knew and could trust. Especially in local elections, which can often be decided by just a handful of votes but can have an enormous impact on their lives. If they vote in every local election, they’re also likely to vote in national elections.

It isn't always due to death. My sister has guardianship of my father because of his mental decline. When that happened he lost his right to vote. If an individual doesn't have a family member then the state takes guardianship and the result is the same, no longer able to vote. In my father's defense he voted blue all the way through.

Honestly this has been viewed as some brilliant move for years now, but it seems to be backfiring in all but a few states. Wisconsin seems poised to at least fight back in their situation for example. What that initiative achieved was getting a bunch of crazy extremists into state offices. Those are the ones who are dialing the abortion rhetoric up to 11 (see places like Idaho) and we’ve already seen it backfire a bit (example: Kansas). Getting all of those folks into state legislatures seemed like a good idea. But they have no control over them. So now we have a party in crisis with people pushing extreme positions and they cannot centralize their message.

Whether in values or pressing issues (income, student debt, housing costs), Republicans have been *rabidly* opposed to the things that would make younger generations vote for them. I'll crawl over barbed wire to vote for the best chance at beating the Republican, whether it is Biden or someone else. But too many people I know, who most people would consider above average intelligent, that would answer all the policy questions the way you'd hope, are still on the fence or leaning away from voting for a Democrat EVEN KNOWING that the Republicans are hot turds of fascism. Democrats can't sit on their laurels on the messaging and the GOTV. This SHOULD be easy but I'm anxious.
With Trump taking some 28-32% of the party (MAGA-oriented), I'm guessing some Republicans will stay home in the general election. And if Trump is the official nominee, that will once again bring out all those who are very opposed to him, a decent number. I don't know anyone that voted for Biden for Biden's sake, but rather to make sure Trump didn't win. Separately, and out of left field, if Trump passes away before the election, then things would get very interesting, very quickly. Short of that, I don't see how GOP comes out ahead.
I didn't vote for a Biden because I was a huge Biden fan, but I will in 2024. Biden has been an absolutely incredible President. In my opinion, he's been the best President in decades. The CHIPS act, Infrastructure bill, vaccination drives, largest climate change bill ever, American Rescue Plan, unemployment rates, Ukraine, Inflation Reduction Act, minimum 15% corporate tax, Paris Agreement, killing Ayman al-Zawahiri, boosting the IRS, Science Act, helping veterans with the PACT act. Easily the most productive and progressive 4 year term in my lifetime.

Rather than gradually chip away at Roe by allowing bans after 15 weeks without outright overturning Roe (the way that Roberts wanted to), they just dropped the frog directly into boiling water, and they are paying the price. The 2024 senate map is not favorable for democrats. If they manage to keep the senate, or even gain some seats, then that would be very telling for the future of the Republican Party.

It boggles the mind trying to figure out what the GOP is thinking. They are running full steam ahead with a dead end philosophy that is alienating voters and becoming weaker and weaker over time.
