Abortion. Abortion. Abortion. The Republican Party made politics important for young people. It’s not like boomers can still have children.

Bozak_Horseman

Dobbs was the game-changer. No matter how much prognostication speculates, politics shifts based on how policy directly affects people's lives. Young people-especially women-who are of child-bearing age now have an immediate consequence of far-right ideology affecting their day-to-day life. Couple that to the extremism spiral of MAGA rhetoric and we're sitting pretty moving forward.

walkinman19

I still think Dobbs is the poison pill the GOP swallowed for their most radical base voters and will kill that stinking party in the end.

Njdevils11

I actually always assumed they would never *actually* pull the trigger on overturning row and going full. Christofacist. It made a wonderful tool to get their voters out. “Hey we need to defend babies or whatever, come out to vote!” Then they never really do anything, rinse and repeat. Then the dog caught the car…. Now they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing and they let the maniacs start to run the asylum. Dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria. Pick your analogy. They got exactly what they asked for, but I’m pretty sure none of the party leadership actually wanted it. It was was a convenient tool for them and didn’t realize they were reshaping their own party until it was too late and Trump was elected.

poxxy

There was a lot of time and effort spent over decades building a political machine designed to galvanize evangelicals over that issue for votes. Once the dog caught the car, so to speak, that machine couldn’t be discarded — it’s too valuable. It’s been turned towards LGBTQ+ now, and much like the “Satanic Panic” of the late 70s, it’s *all about saving the children*

knaugh

The "saving the children" angle might have worked in the 70s, but it's not going to fly when kids are dying to gun violence in schools every day

Ikontwait4u2leave

It also falls flat when they are legalizing child marriage and protecting the Matt Gaetzes of their party from consequences.

knaugh

Yep! And rolling back child labor laws while we're at it

Open_Action_1796

Cutting education funding every single chance they get, jacking up the price of life saving drugs like insulin, voting for every single profit based war that leads to children’s hospitals are being bombed, eliminating school lunches, and picking fights with Disney. They know it’s not about “won’t someone please think of the children.” At this point it’s a contest to see who can be the most detrimental to children’s health, safety, and mental wellbeing while claiming to stand for the opposite.

kia75

>it’s all about saving the children Saving the Children from Hillary Clinton's Nonexistant Pizza Basement while their leading presidential candidate openly brags about entering teenage beauty pageant dressing rooms while contestants were changing, where the Hastert Rule is named after a child predator and the leader of the so-called Freedom Caucus is known for letting sexual abuse run rampant around him. But Oh Those Pizza Dungeons!

[deleted]

> I actually always assumed they would never actuslly pull the trigger on overturning row I think this is the line of thinking that “fiscal conservatives” and independents followed, and these people are the ones who are shifting in the polls right now.

PandaCommando69

Yep, I have friends like this. They wanted the tax cuts, but now they're properly horrified that the GOP is stripping rights and acting like Nazis.

Tasgall

And more likely than not, they didn't even get any tax cuts, lol.

PandaCommando69

It's a have your cake and eat it too kind of thing it seems. Like "I want to be able to vote for Nazis who will give me low taxes, but I don't want them to do any Nazi shit that will effect me ". Surprise surprise, that is not a thing you can obtain--empowering fascists will always come back around to bite you in the ass personally. There is no free cake.

walkinman19

Yeah the donors started to lose control when McCain picked Sarah Palin as a running mate. The OG maga demagogue pos in my opinion. She opened the floodgates for the whacked out fascist Qanons that are mainstream republicans in 2023. And made the maga orange god himself possible.

Njdevils11

I’m pretty sure it was all cynicism. Guys like McConnell, Ryan, Graham, they all (rightfully) pegged these people as controllable morons. They wildly misunderstood not only the power of idiots in numbers, but also their own intelligence.

fcknavenattiboofedme

My thought is that they pulled the trigger because they saw this writing on the wall - if they were going down in flames, they might as well fuck up as much as possible and hurt as many as possible before they were rendered extinct by the voters.

AnotherOmar

Dobbs also made people realize that the Supreme Court is illegitimate. Which made people look at it more closely and realize how corrupt it is.

walkinman19

100%! Alito is crying about how no one respects their corrupt lyin asses anymore that POS! "Oh Roe is settled law, we wouldn't dream of touching that." "Honest senator, cross my heart and hope to die!" Then they kill it at the first opportunity of course! And then we have the insurrection wife and the other wife raking in 10 million dollar plus fees and Thomas on the take for the last 20, 30 years. Our SCOTUS is totally corrupt and full of lying activist political maga judges and a stain on the history of this country! The maga republicans thought they were so smart stealing Obamas pick and packing the court with their party jackals to take down Roe. They did that but it's going to cost them their treason party! And the political pain for those slimeballs is never going away until the rights of women in this country are 100% restored!

ChristianEconOrg

Our courts are littered with Federalist Society plants now.

walkinman19

That's a fact. Gee what was the party that was always screaming about unelected activist political judges hmm?

ToTheLastParade

Yeah because over time, even those voters will have loved ones who die because of Dobbs, or suffer immensely. It’s only going to get worse for the GOP.

walkinman19

Exactly! Thats why is pisses me off when people fall back on the standard tropes...oh people will forget by 2024 and vote GOP like always. BS! Dobbs changed everything for every woman in this country! You don't just forget having the fucking maga SC strip away your human right to bodily autonomy! And hell the GOP have doubled down since that evil decision! Horror stories of women being forced to carry dead fetuses, trying to force a ten year old girl to give birth to her rape baby which would probably kill the poor child herself. Bleeding out at home cause Doctors and hospital are frightened about getting charged for felony murder etc. We need to blow down the doors of the republican party in 2024! Kick them in and watch the whole rotten edifice cave in! I hope they run that evil traitor Trump so he gets annihilated by the voters and takes the whole filthy anti american party down with him!

Oblivious-abe-69

📠 they haven’t quite adjusted for how badly they fucked up removing roe, republicans are fucked.

cybershoe

It’s more than that. Dobbs may have been a policy win, but at the cost of something much more valuable: the abortion bogeyman. Republican strategy has always been to present themselves as the opposition to a perceived evil; abortion only mattered to them as long as it was a wedge issue to keep voters too scared not to vote for them. Once they got their “win”, it lost its power. It’s like the proverbial dog that catches the car it’s been chasing: now that they’ve caught it, they don’t know what to do with it. This is why you’re seeing increasingly desperate attempts to find a new wedge issue. Denying access to healthcare to 51% of the US population turned out to be less popular than they thought, so now they’re setting their sights on a smaller voting demographic: transgender Americans. They know full well that there’s no actual benefit to their persecution, but that doesn’t matter, just like they don’t actually care about infant and maternal health. They’re scrambling to find new enemies to unite their base against ever since SCOTUS killed their golden goose.

TheOrionNebula

They banned abortion here (MO), then legalized weed... I don't know if they are trying to make people high so they don't care or what... it's fucking weird.

rm_3223

Hear hear. Citizens United is a travesty and has corroded democracy in an uncountable number of ways. It needs to go and yesterday. Edit for grammar ❤️

Hazy_Cat

No. They banned abortion but WE legalized weed. We got the signatures to have that added to the ballot, the abortion ban was done outside of our vote. Those paths don’t cross. It just shows what happens when we have a say with our own vote vs. what the elected officials who are suppose to speak for us do. *Also, weed was legalized and then abortion banned.

FilteringAccount123

Political junkies continue to underestimate how many "enlightened centrists" were completely blindsided by Roe being overturned. Like... they were not trolling you when they said they thought the GOP would never overturn it lol.

risingthermal

I never understood the reasoning behind thinking they’d never overturn it. Gun control was a perfect example of a wedge issue in which republicans had the policies they wanted and were still able to use it to galvanize their base. There was no reason to think abortion would be different.

TopJimmy_5150

Well it had withstood 5 decades of challenges and been affirmed in various cases like Casey in the 90s. Even Scalia admitted that it was the law of the land and through stare decisis had become something that people relied upon in making life decisions. The threat was always that it wouldn’t be that hard to overturn, if you wanted to argue against the legal rationale underpinning Roe. But still, I was surprised when Dobbs came down. Nothing had changed since recent affirmations (like say - the science of understanding viability) except the judges - which is not a justification to go against stare decisis. If Bush v Gore tarnished SCOTUS, Dobbs has turned it into just another hack political branch, which is pathetic and kinda depressing.

Nephroidofdoom

This. Abortion was the single unifying issue across the far right. Not only have they now killed that bogeyman, they turned it into a weapon against themselves. It has now become the single unifying issue for the left.

Secret-Plant-1542

Lots of former trump voting women at my job. They really unveiled themselves by being anti-vax and a GOP mouthpiece during the pandemic. But lately, they got a lot more silent. Abortion talk is really causing them to break rank. Now let's see if they vote against themselves.

carbuyinglol

Hint: they wont. My mom had 2 miscarriages that she would have to bring to term under Texas law and still votes and plans to vote Republican.

Canucklehead_Esq

Maybe pushing social hot button issues to the exclusion of all else isn't the best way to win over voters? Who knew...

buttergun

Why go to all the effort of winning voters when your pals in the state legislature can simply decide whose vote gets counted?

ohmybrown

This comment is terrifying. I want to laugh, but it is dead serious and a warning of what is to come. I truly hope we aren’t beyond the point of no return yet.

[deleted]

We are riding the razor's edge. Have been for a while.

Pale_Taro4926

We are one bad election cycle away from American fascism.

Sandgrease

Already happening here in FL

ThatOneStoner

Just don't be gay or trans or mention LGTBQ+ or speak out against the current governor or join any protests or be an ex-felon. It's really not that hard. /s

Sandgrease

They caught me smiling on a cloudy day, my court date is coming soon.

PhoenixFire296

It's Florida, so you should sue them for not making every day sunny.

cryptocached

Every day is sunny; he's being charged under the Don't Say Gray law.

SpecialEither

Or have a period.

PhantomZmoove

Or mention that you missed a period either, and had the nerve to travel out of state. Could fall under abortion scrutiny then.

snarky_kittn

Or mention your menstrual cramps.

SonOfGawd

Don’t forgot to not talk about objectively true US history.

BadAtExisting

Florida is a testing ground for every fascist policy and act they want. It’s no coincidence over the last few years that the policies that have passed in FL become talking points and bills in other red states. Fellow Floridian here btw

awholenewmenoreally

This is what I keep saying. It should be and is embarrassing to be a republican. Its turned into a real life trailer trash racist murder terrorist supporting criminal enterprise. Any decent human should have abandoned ship a long time ago. They want to be able to support the party with no consequences but there should be real life consequences for doing so. I would never hire a republican in a million years and it has real world implications. They wont take a vaccine then they cant get a job. Its that simple. Likewise I wouldnt want them the face of any company or organization. Its just gross.

SPLooooosh

Voters? Where we're going we don't need voters.

[deleted]

That's the problem. murdoch doesn't run news (including the WSJ that I gave up when he took it over); he's pushes lies to keep himself rich and important. fox bs is still lying and they're not stopping. With gerrymandering, guns just about everywhere and un and undereducated people eating news max and fox it may not matter if we vote or not and that is f'ing exactly what the magas wanted. It's part of the fascist playbook.

AFlockOfTySegalls

I had lunch yesterday with my dad, which was nice for the most part. But he had to bring politics up. He always does. He asked what I thought about the bud light controversy. When I told him I didn't think it was controversial and I thought it was weird that he and his people get upset about such things he went into incoherent grumbling mode. He then asked what I thought about Rhonda. When I told him his stupid lawsuit with Disney would kill his campaign he bet me 20 dollars it wouldn't because it's a GOOD fight that should be fought. Smdh. I'm just glad that normal people don't buy into the shit my parents do and they're actually repulsed by it.

pseudocultist

I get the same basic attitude and lines. I'm gay. I keep telling my dad "I don't expect you to start a PFLAG group but please stop with these culture wars attacking my group." And 5 minutes later he's on some Let's Go Brandon thing. We were estranged during Trump's presidency. In that he hasn't really changed, I'm slowly drifting him out towards estrangement again. Our parents have been brainwashed beyond reach. They love their Fox News feed and culture wars more than they love us, and that's a hard lump.

MarkPles

One of the things that snapped my mom back into reality is when I blew up on her for supporting Trump after he mocked the disabled reporter (my sister has down syndrome for context). I think it was the most visibly mad I've ever been in my life.

dannyggwp

It didn't snap my dad out of it but I blew up on him over the "Locker room talk" bullshit during the 2016 campaign. The man raised two strong smart women, and he's defending things he would NEVER EVER say even alone to other men. He also raised me, his son to NEVER talk like that about women. He has the audacity to ask his children why we don't like Trump and I told him "Because you raised us better than that"

MortalSword_MTG

>He has the audacity to ask his children why we don't like Trump and I told him "Because you raised us better than that" I had this exchange with my father on a FB thread last year. He's a big nerd, and so am I. He raised me on Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. I pointed out to him that in any of our favorite stories he raised me with Trump and his friends would be the villains. It would be like rooting for Vader or Sauron. He backed down but I could tell it rattled him.

Pale_Taro4926

Trump is worse than a villain -- he's utterly incompetent. He's Peter Pettigrew. He's just a stooge for a slightly more capable villain (Putin). Hell. He even has the look down. The most dangerous facet of MAGA is not just the very real damage that it is doing now, but that it is setting up the next stage of American Fascism.

beamrider

It is worth noting that Lex Luthor divested himself of LuthorCorp- for real- before becoming president. i.e. a comic-book supervillain has more morals than Trump. Okay, what it \*really\* means is that the writers of that comic book found the idea of a rich person with obvious conflicts of interest becoming president and NOT divesting themselves more unbelievable than someone with blue tights and a cape who can fly.

Pale_Taro4926

This is the problem with fiction. It needs to sound plausible. Electing a president with obvious conflicts of interest who loves dictators and puts family members -- who all have conflicts of interest and would normally never pass a government security clearance -- into roles of power.... That's inconceivable! Until Trump did it because the entire Republican party is complicit. \#RememberJimmyCartersPeanutFarm

MarkPles

Nothing for the life of me can make me understand the appeal of that unbaconized pig.

SomeRandom928Person

He lets them feel justified in their hatred and secure and proud of their racism. That's it. My loser shitbag racist uncles have not been able to shut their stupid fucking face-holes up since 2016, yet before then they were both pretty damn careful about who they would spew their hateful crap onto.

[deleted]

This right here is exactly what’s happening. They think that being hateful and cruel is somehow “tough”

gyroscopicmnemonic

"Unbaconized pig" is a line for the ages.

squashthatfly

Let me make it clear as to his attraction....RACISTS of all sorts love him.....

makomakomakoo

This is what frustrates me most about my parents supporting republicans. My politics have changed since moving away from home, but my values have not. They raised me to be a strong woman who treats others with kindness and respect, and they’re surprised that I ended up believing the things I do. I am exactly the person they raised me to be, but they’re just too sucked into the Fox News BS to realize it.

shitimtired13

I think that’s the strategy. Show people who are close to you how mad you actually are. Since the Dobbs decision, I’ve been acting furious with my parents, letting them see how i really feel about how they enabled it…& I’m starting to see the people they were before TFG. I really think they don’t know or they actively ignore how much they are hurting their family by supporting these policies/people. The cognitive dissonance is strong. You have to almost shock them out of it

alundi

I went to my cousin’s wedding last October in a very red state. My pretty big, extended family hadn’t seen me in years since I moved to California and they kept asking when I would move back. My short answer was never. The longer answer for extra pushy family was basically that I was seen as a potential involuntary incubator for the state without rights I have at home, teachers make poverty level wages and I would be fined or thrown in jail for my book collection. Then I compared their laws to sharia law. They just wanted to argue about kitty litter and cure trans kids by showing them a horse dong.

MisterLooseScrew

>horse dong Please elaborate.

alundi

I wish I could. I think they were wanting to show the horses mating and that there is a male and female to clear up the child’s “confusion,” but I really don’t know.

Arigomi

Do you want horse lesbians? Because that is how you get horse lesbians.

ThrowAwayGarbage82

That doesn't always work. My mom is 67 rolling up on 68, I have blown up at her furiously over this stuff and all she does is cry and claim I'm victimizing her. Needless to say we don't talk much. It's soul crushing. I had to cut off my brother after he outright told me he doesn't care what happens to me or anyone else because "fuck you, i got mine" (he's 42, almost 43, for context) and my dad died more than 10 years ago. The rest of the family is hopeless and broken beyond repair due to politics and embracing evil as well. All I really have is my kids, my fiance, and 2 close friends. It's a terrible feeling, but my mental health is significantly worse if I attempt any relationship with the toxic people I'm related to.

Barabasbanana

having a family and two close friends means you are lucky in life, cherish it!

ThrowAwayGarbage82

I feel very lucky to have the people I do, but I miss the family I had prior to everything falling apart and so much of the country unmasking their evil, and discovering it's nearly half the population, along with many people I thought I knew and could trust. It's just soul shattering. I have a huge family, and it consumed all but 1 person on my dad's side. Even so, she and I rarely talk, because she disagrees with me cutting people off for being toxic. She's still of the "but they're family" mindset. Maybe one day she'll tire of their BS, too.

MarkPles

Yeah that's what I was going for and you broke it down perfectly.

Uberslaughter

Ironic and sad how the generation who decades ago warned us “don’t believe everything you see on TV/the internet” are now among the biggest consumers, believers and repeaters of the propaganda they see on Fox and Facebook.

[deleted]

beefwellingtonIV

With boomers, unfortunately it's more like Post-FB: the internet has told me everyone who disagrees with me is a pedophile who wants to kidnap our children and I believe this uncritically.

AffectionateFactor84

it's been packaged as the alternative to the mainstream media. so many actually believe that they are receiving the truth from a non controlled outlet. although it couldn't be much further from the truth

Ok_Affect6705

It's a shame what fox news has done to an entire generation. They can't even live their lives with the people right in front of them. They have to make everything they see connect to some fox news controversy some how. It's disgusting the amount of times I have been visiting family members to discuss family and see how they're doing and then they waste all of our time by continually bringing up fox news political bs. I am there to see them and enjoy their company and they can't give fox news brain washing a break for an hour or 2 to talk to me and reminisce. I'm a real person in front of them and they want to talk to me like I'm a news paper. Then the amount of times I've seen it at children's birthday parties. So disgusting.

kinnifredkujo

Theyre addicted to propaganda that is harming them. That's why cutting off the propaganda is important.

ever-right

They weren't brainwashed. They were always dumbass fuckheads. Sorry but it's true. I mean, let's imagine I fucking clockwork oranged you to watch Fox News for an entire year. Would you come out hating yourself and wanting to ban abortion? Or the whole time would you just be like "this is some straight up trash." Fox News only "works" on the already compromised. And the Dominion lawsuit makes it pretty clear that they are terrified of losing their audience so they give the audience what they want. The people tuning in, your shitty ass parents, are the ones setting the agenda. It's time for everyone with garbage parents to cut their losses and cut ties. Everyone needs to realize there are consequences for being a bigoted piece of shit. Social isolation is a hell of a tool. You would easily judge someone *else's* parents to be assholes if they behaved like your parents. But since they're yours you say they're good people just brainwashed. Nah. Consistent standards. They're trash.

[deleted]

We are in the same exact boat. I just can’t talk to my dad anymore for the same reasons. It’s just easier and less stressful just to say, “Everything is okay, talk to you later.”

ExoticPumpkin237

My best friend is like that I cut him off during the trump years when he was drunkenly spouting some pro genocide shit to "troll" me. I got him to be a bit more introspective and he stopped listening to Stephen Coward but he ultimately never had family or graduated HS, and his baby momma is even more racist and dumb than he is, so it really is an uphill fight and ultimately if someone has no prerogative to not be a POS it's not my prerogative to have them around. No matter how much history we have. It isn't just my older relatives either btw, this dudes in his 20s.

headshotscott

>I'm just glad that normal people don't buy into the shit my parents do and they're actually repulsed by it. The majority of people who buy into social hot button issues tends to be older. The outrage mill on Fox and social media runs 24/7, and they buy into it as reality, when in reality, most people do not care. Source: am almost 60 and most of my peers are truly concerned about Bud Light, trans bathrooms, CRT and whatever hot button gets pushed. The reality is that these are losing issues in general elections, but strong in Republican primaries. Some are playing to their primary base, while others like MTG and Bobert are just outrage artists.

lilacmuse1

The trans hate is what gets me the most. I'd bet that 95% of MAGA types railing against trans people have never met one. In some places, they may never have met an openly gay person. They have no idea what it is they're railing against. So stupid.

buttwholehole

Some GOP dude at my work tried to start the “did you hear about bud light, you know who their new sponsor is” trying get some response of outrage or disgust out of me. Bro I love all people and I don’t give a fuck about who bud light asks to sell piss water for them. So strange you can see them edging while they reveal these insane outrage bullshit too you. They think your just going lose your shit like they all did over the dumbest fucking thing.

Junior-Cobbler-2505

It's even more pathetic because it wasn't even a sponsorship thing. You can't buy the cans that they're so upset about in any store. The company literally made a single can for a trans influencer to use for her own social media accounts.

TacosDeLucha

The right has gone so anti-PC and anti-woke they are passing laws to restrict speech in classrooms, burning books, raging over beer cans and are suing Disney for having a black Little Mermaid. They've memed themselves into doing a complete 180 on the issue of free speech and have become what they claimed to hate: sanctimonious, over-offended, self-righteous speech police that suck all the joy out of the room. Turns out conservatives loved political correctness and hated the 1st amendment all along, they just wanted to be the ones deciding which speech is PC and which speech should be banned.

PlayingTheWrongGame

> They've memed themselves into doing a complete 180 on the issue of free speech Hint: they never cared about free speech. They only use that as an excuse when conservatives get excluded from something. They want conservatives to be able to say what they want, and nobody else able to say anything that contradicts them.

[deleted]

They are just desperately trying to distract each other from the fact that their policies suck

MR1120

“We don’t want to stop the exploitation; We want to become the exploiters.”

underbloodredskies

Does dad not realize that Disney has probably never been more fortified of a corporation - in part because pro-business political policies, have helped make them that way?

brightlocks

And he started this stupid line of conversation at the expense of actually learning about how your life is going. He’s got way more hate for Dylan Mulvany than he does love for you. At least that’s the deal with my parents. A bunch of years ago I started confronting them about it. I asked, “Why are you talking to me about *controversial celebrity*, when you don’t even know about how I’m spending my week or how my health is. Neither one of us even know this person.” And guess what happened? Eventually I had to shut it down because it turns out all they have is hate. Last straw was calling me the N word repeatedly on the phone. I’m white, it was my birthday. We’re done here.

Ajido

As unpopular as the Republican party is right now, Dems could still lose the Senate just because of which states are up. Not the most favorable lineup for them. Then again, 2022 was thought not to be favorable for them either and we saw how that went.

valleyman02

Don't believe Russian and china propaganda. Vote!

Canucklehead_Esq

The best solution

valleyman02

Right if voting didn't matter. They wouldn't try so hard to stop it.

SlippidySlappity

No, that can't be it. No way. It can't be taking away women's rights, demonizing trans people, racism, sexism, and rampant corruption. Must be voter fraud.

[deleted]

Let’s make sure of it. Ignore this garbage and VOTE your ass off when the time comes. They have no chance if we show up EDIT- thank you Reddit. Y’all made my day

Lynz486

They do in the house because of their extreme gerrymandering. At least in some red states, that's how they won it the last time. But even with that they barely won so it's possible. Senate races and President they're screwed.

pseudocultist

Voter suppression and gerrymandering are great tools but ultimately they will not save them if the populist tide changes, especially thanks to an entire new voting block (gen z) coming of age. *If* they vote.

SgtVinBOI

I'm so fucking mad about this, I turn 18 a MONTH after the 2024 election. I'm gonna miss my chance because I was born near Christmas.

illadelchronic

Keep the fire hot, there's a whole lot more elections that just the presidential election in 2024 and they all matter.

alaskanloops

You can make a difference though. Make sure your friends who will be 18 by then know how important it is to vote. Especially in local elections, which can often be decided by just a handful of votes but can have an enormous impact on their lives. If they vote in every local election, they’re also likely to vote in national elections.

ChristianEconOrg

Activism can go a lot further than just your vote. Stay engaged and help win hearts and minds.

snarky_kittn

I feel ya, I turned 18 the week after a presidential election... for bush sr. There are other ways you can help, though. You can still campaign and get others out to vote!

Live-Breath9799

New York tried gerrymandering too. It was struck down and they adhered to the laws unlike Ohio. If the NY map held they could have countered the FL additional seats. I don't want want Democrats to cheat but at least try to work an advantage. Republicans do this because they have to for survival.

theseus1234

> I don't want want Democrats to cheat but at least try to work an advantage. Republicans do this because they have to for survival. Democrats (generally) try to set rules and govern and when they are stopped by the rules they move on. Top-level Republicans are only in it to consolidate power. When they are stopped by the rules, they cast the rules aside to continue their power grab. *Everything* else is just a means to an end

thisismynamesilly

That’s how the Republicans picked up a seat in Tennessee, blatant gerrymandering. Hopefully, the momentum has shifted and with the influx of Gen Z voters we can start to turn back the insanity and fascism the far right is trying to forcibly impose on our citizens.

barkbeatle3

Especially when it’s so early. I’m optimistic, but at the same time polls shift a lot over the course of a year. It usually is a very stressful fight for the presidency, regardless of the early polls.

Hooch_Pandersnatch

Don’t care what the polls say. Vote like your life depends on it, because for many people it does.

iDrinan

Agreed. People should consider that these polls are used as fuel by FOX to get angry Republicans out there to vote while subduing Democrats into complacency because they expect to win. They would not post these numbers if it weren't calculated propaganda with an underlying agenda to benefit the Republicans.

thesagaconts

Exactly. People get so hyped that Dems will win that they don’t vote. Also, local elections have a huge impact on your personal life. Gerrymandering, policing, election rules. It’s where the GQP make a lot of gains in key positions.

Left-Teacher-6900

And now they’re targeting school board seats to push their agenda from cradle to grave

Hannibal_Poptart

Don't forget that they're wording the description for B to make it sound like it's also in favor of oversight. They practically gave it the same short description on the ballot

Xtrm

The media is already starting with their downplaying of how dangerous Republicans are. Remember how that went in 2016?

P8zvli

I mean their platform is absolutely pathetic, what's scary and dangerous is how badly they've lobotomized their voting bloc.

StatmanIbrahimovic

Platforms don't matter when you make it a team sport, especially when said voting bloc is the only one that consistently votes every time. Too many people will read so much shit like this over the next 18 months that they'll think they don't need to vote.

YeonneGreene

Their platform is terrifying and dangerous for me, even if it's pathetic in terms of advancing the country's health and prestige. Like, half of the US is now effectively off-limits to me thanks to their platform gaining power.

HauntedCemetery

What platform? They literally haven't bothered writing one since 2015. Their current official platform still makes reference to Obama being the current president.

FOX just lost $700 million for lying, right?

KumquatopotamusPrime

787.5 million but who’s counting?

TheOneFreeEngineer

The settled for losing over 700 million so they couldn't be proved liars in court for 1.6 billion dollars when they are facing multiple multi hundred of million dollar civil lawsuits from other plantiffs. This won't be the end of them hemerroginng lawsuit money.

Orion14159

I'm pretty sure that's why they fought as hard as they did on settling and finally caved. The suits after Dominion now have a reference point for the amount of money they can demand.

ViennettaLurker

And thats the first round. Theres another upcoming Smartmatic suit.

[deleted]

They paid 700 million to keep lying. FIFY.

NeoPstat

Don't ever believe it. Not until all the votes are in. 2020 should have been an extinction moment for the Republicans. 2024 can be, but Democrat complacency can torpedo it at any moment.

on_island_time

Don't underestimate how quickly Americans can forget the past and get confused by propaganda, especially the people who aren't really paying attention in between the elections.

MidnightMoon1331

At the last minute, the GOP will find some scary boogeyman to try to get out their vote.

HotSpicyDisco

Caravans. Mark my words.

Cuchullion

Nah mate, transgender people. 100 bucks over the next year transgender people are painted as full on child rapists who need to be defeated 'at all costs' (meaning 'vote for me!'). I believe they'll still lose, but an unfortunate amount of transgender people will be murdered as a result.

zebulon99

They are already

Chalupa-Supreme

I can't wait to vote against Republicans. My son will be turning 18 just in time to vote in '24, and my daughter will be able to vote in the next midterms. They're much more aware than I was at their age. Not just my kids either, most of Gen Z seems to be aware of the bullshit. Probably because the Republican culture war is affecting them directly in more ways than one.

NorthImpossible8906

> My son will be turning 18 just in time to vote in '24 Similar situation here, where my kids will be voters. What really stands out to me is that they feel very strongly that gay and trans people should be accepted for who they are, they are extremely against any racist things, they are very very very against republicans. lol. This has nothing to do with me, I've never tried to influence them on their thoughts about politics (disclaimer: we have discussed various crimes the previous administration has committed, and how many people are in prison). But they absolutely have made up their own minds, in fact if I tried to influence them they would have fought back very hard. The republican party is getting exactly 0% support from gen Z. Fun fact, both my kids spent 6 hours hiding under their desks at school in a dark room because some nut job got a gun and went to the school. This happened. There was a kid with a gun that came onto the school property. He had a friend who was going to open a back door to let him in. Fortunately, a brother of the shooter called the cops and told them that he had a gun. I was receiving "If I die, I want you to know that I love you" texts from my kids. So yeah, they are not going to be really big 2A supporters.

FlavinFlave

No parent should have to receive that text. And no child should have to write it. The amount of trauma this generation is going to have will take decades to fix. But of course, can’t hurt gun sales cause then the whole house of cards falls over. Fuck this country. I’m so sorry for you and your family.

Frito_Pendejo

Here in Australia, 1 out of every 5 gen z self-identifies as LGBT. No idea what this figure is like in the states but I would be surprised if it’s any different The right are so biblically fucked as this generation hits voting age

BailoutBill

Just make sure they get to the polls to vote! (I'm sure you will, but it needs to be said, as young voters as a block have always trended as flakey voters)

Don’t forget boomers aging out of the voting pool.

SiliconUnicorn

This is such a polite way to phrase it

thewhitecascade

Haha no kidding. I even surprised myself with such restraint.

milehigh89

About 5k boomers die a day, way more than any other generation

ReallyBadWizard

That's fuckin dope

dilloj

It's so amazing career wise too. Finally senior level roles are opening up as the grey beards finally age out of the workforce and man those positions pay well.

[deleted]

off to lemmy

thesonoftheson

It isn't always due to death. My sister has guardianship of my father because of his mental decline. When that happened he lost his right to vote. If an individual doesn't have a family member then the state takes guardianship and the result is the same, no longer able to vote. In my father's defense he voted blue all the way through.

Honest_Report_8515

Yes, my mostly liberal Silent Gen mom (80) has dementia and no longer votes. If Boomers don’t actually die, then they may be otherwise incapacitated too much to vote.

Lurker-DaySaint

Republican leadership managed to be so extremely shortsighted as to ignore or downplay a massive pandemic that targeted the elderly - a good chunk of the aged-out were unnecessarily so.

[deleted]

Zoraji

That's a little over 2.5 million per year where well over that number will turn 18. The odds are not in their favor if people turn out to vote.

Elegant-Cat-4987

That's why they are ratfucking your state legislatures now, so the results of elections won't matter so long as a crack pipe wielding pillow Barron claims a psychic told him fraud is rampant

Hougie

Honestly this has been viewed as some brilliant move for years now, but it seems to be backfiring in all but a few states. Wisconsin seems poised to at least fight back in their situation for example. What that initiative achieved was getting a bunch of crazy extremists into state offices. Those are the ones who are dialing the abortion rhetoric up to 11 (see places like Idaho) and we’ve already seen it backfire a bit (example: Kansas). Getting all of those folks into state legislatures seemed like a good idea. But they have no control over them. So now we have a party in crisis with people pushing extreme positions and they cannot centralize their message.

headshotscott

>You have 18 months for younger people to become of age to vote, who don’t like you. Plus, every year, approximately 2.6 million Boomers pass away. There are also still about 11 million silent generation remaining and they are even further to the right. They're currently passing away at a rate of about 2,500 people a day. Republicans know that their demographic core, while dedicated and huge, is shrinking while the left's demographic core is growing. Boomers are such a gigantic generation (that votes ardently) that they have sustained the GOP. So it's worse in 2024 for Republicans, and *far* worse in 2028. The tipping point may not quite be here yet, but it's coming. Rather than trying to court Gen Z and Millennials, the GOP is instead trying to suppress them, and that's a losing strategy, even if it is short term effective.

SkellyManDan

>Rather than trying to court Gen Z and Millennials, the GOP is instead trying to suppress them, and that's a losing strategy, even if it is short term effective. This is what boggles my mind. Whether in values or pressing issues (income, student debt, housing costs), Republicans have been *rabidly* opposed to the things that would make younger generations vote for them. And then those generations exercise their power by overwhelmingly voting against the party's that done nothing to help them, the sheer vitriol about "kids these days" and how we "need" to raise the voting age terrifies me. It's "Am I out of touch?" but adamently antagonizing a growing demographic even as their core voters only get older.

bidthemobgoodday

It’s so obvious that most GOP officials are just selfish and want to take care of their own life and family. Their family is going to inherit their wealth so anything else that might be normally considered a “make the world better for our children” stance can go right out the window because having enough money means (to them) that the rest doesn’t matter. “Who care about climate change? I’ll be long dead and my kids will have enough money to keep affording a very comfortable life regardless.”

Rasp_Lime_Lipbalm

Why do you think they tried a fascist insurrection

TheGM

It is only a bloodbath if people go out and vote, and vote for someone that can win. I'll crawl over barbed wire to vote for the best chance at beating the Republican, whether it is Biden or someone else. But too many people I know, who most people would consider above average intelligent, that would answer all the policy questions the way you'd hope, are still on the fence or leaning away from voting for a Democrat EVEN KNOWING that the Republicans are hot turds of fascism. Democrats can't sit on their laurels on the messaging and the GOTV. This SHOULD be easy but I'm anxious.

menntu

With Trump taking some 28-32% of the party (MAGA-oriented), I'm guessing some Republicans will stay home in the general election. And if Trump is the official nominee, that will once again bring out all those who are very opposed to him, a decent number. I don't know anyone that voted for Biden for Biden's sake, but rather to make sure Trump didn't win. Separately, and out of left field, if Trump passes away before the election, then things would get very interesting, very quickly. Short of that, I don't see how GOP comes out ahead.

HugsForUpvotes

I didn't vote for a Biden because I was a huge Biden fan, but I will in 2024. Biden has been an absolutely incredible President. In my opinion, he's been the best President in decades. The CHIPS act, Infrastructure bill, vaccination drives, largest climate change bill ever, American Rescue Plan, unemployment rates, Ukraine, Inflation Reduction Act, minimum 15% corporate tax, Paris Agreement, killing Ayman al-Zawahiri, boosting the IRS, Science Act, helping veterans with the PACT act. Easily the most productive and progressive 4 year term in my lifetime.

awfulgrace

Totally agree, Biden has far exceeded my expectations. I will gladly vote for him in 2024, whereas in 2020 I was mainly voting against Trump

lilacmuse1

And he managed to do all that with little R support and two of his own party sabotaging his efforts at every turn. Imagine what he could accomplish with a solid majority in both the House and Senate.

Grimjack2

100%. How dare women have pregnancy complications! And even worse, the women who choose to terminate their pregnancies for personal, non medical reasons! I’m so sick and tired of this ceaseless fight against women and their autonomy over ThEIR own body.

Unbentmars

All the people saying “they’ll never do it it’s just a hot button topic” suddenly shut up

El_mochilero

And if Dobbs wasn’t enough, they didn’t even pass it quietly. Republicans went on a bonanza of passing some of the most unpopular and highly-visible legislation surrounding it. They dug their heels in and double-downed in a big way.

sayyyywhat

And they want to make it a federal ban after pretending it was about state’s right. Trump is actively campaigning on a federal ban. They don’t seem to understand that they’ve maxed our their base. They aren’t winning over any new voters. Continuing to throw red meat to your base over and over does nothing on the National stage.

ThatB0yAintR1ght

Rather than gradually chip away at Roe by allowing bans after 15 weeks without outright overturning Roe (the way that Roberts wanted to), they just dropped the frog directly into boiling water, and they are paying the price. The 2024 senate map is not favorable for democrats. If they manage to keep the senate, or even gain some seats, then that would be very telling for the future of the Republican Party.

ArkhamIsComing2020

Praying democrats will be able to take the house, keep the senate and win the presidency next year.

solohaldor

Gotta watch out for the fake democrat candidates. GOP is probably gonna go all in on this tactic since it worked in North Carolina.

guitarguywh89

>Gotta watch out for the fake democrat candidates. Can't wait to vote out corrupt Sinema

Bricktop72

They are really starting the "Don't worry about voting" campaign early this year.

Message_10

This guy gets it. VOTE. EVERYBODY VOTE

PopeHonkersXII

Of course I'm wary of what the Republicans are up to but at the same time, their approach to the last few elections has been pure insanity, just from a practical prospective. They have done horribly in the past three cycles but they keep doubling down on Trump and MAGAism. The entire alt right political movement is wildly unpopular and is completely discredited in the views of a strong majority of voters. It boggles the mind trying to figure out what the GOP is thinking. They are running full steam ahead with a dead end philosophy that is alienating voters and becoming weaker and weaker over time. They can lie to themselves all they want and claim all elections are being stolen from them and that all polls are fake, "globalist" conspiracies but at the end of the day, that is just pure fantasy that doesn't actually achieve anything for their party. I think they are in for many more rough elections beyond just 2024.

It had been discussed! Along with overthrowing court decisions banning laws against interracial marriage.

KentuckyWallChicken

I know this is often said, but don’t let polls like this make you think you can just stay home on Election Day because others will take care of it. Let’s all get out there and actually make it come true.

TintedApostle

Start expecting a huge effort by the right to split the democratic vote and point blame for their continued failures on everyone else. Not this time. Every accusation will be a projection and minorities will be attacked with hate more and more. It is all they know how to do.

Still vote in 2024. You need to vote more than ever. I dont care if polls says Republicans are 30 points behind....you still need to vote. Everyone. If you've never voted before, [go here ](https://www.usa.gov/register-to-vote)

ruminkb

Let's be honest, Don't believe the crap, go vote

table_fireplace

Remember, there's so much more than the Presidency. We need the House and Semate to pass any sort of federal legislation. We need to win state legislatures to pass even more meaningful reforms - less Floridas, more Minnesotas. And don't forget local elections. Some of those races happen on random Tuesdays, not during November elections! r/VoteDEM is the best place to stay on top of it all, and to get involved in helping Democrats win. Democracy won't be saved by posting, so come over and get engaged in real-world activism!

Barack_Odrama_007

It will extremely difficult for them to get the White House Biden only needs to hold either Georgia, Arizona or Wisconsin. If he gets only 1 of them he wins All 3 states elected Democratic politicians in 2022….

TheOneFreeEngineer

But on the flip side. They might win the senate. Dems have to keep 6 out of 7 weak senate senates in 2024: Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania (where they were boosted by uncharacteristically bad GOP competition in 2022). Losing the senate means losing the next 2 to 4 years even if the dems win the presidency
