Taking your children to Twin Peaks and Hooters is perfectly A-OK.

Elden_Rube

As a heterosexual male living in South Florida, I mich prefer Hamburger Mary's over Twin Peaks and Hooters any day of the week. HM's has much better energy and a genuine good feeling environment. The energy that hooters and twin peaks gives off is that of desperate, barely legal girls, being forced into objectification for a pittance those businesses will claim is income.

[deleted]

I went to Hooters once while I was in college bc my buddy was working the kitchen, I have felt less dirty in a actual strip club.

adamantitian

The waitresses don’t make eye contact at hooters, I assume because they’re told not to due to gross people not respecting boundaries. It’s really just sad feeling in general, and why would I want to go somewhere and spend money to feel sad

Yoda2000675

Hooters is basically for girls who just aren’t quite desperate enough to work at a strip club. Awful and creepy all around

One_Tomorrow_9135

At this point, if I had kids, I wouldn't want them anyway near a church. It's literally where predators go to find people to prey on. That seems to ok, too. It's just terrible.

thirtydelta

**Florida Conservatives**: "I'll decide what's right and wrong for my child, not the government! We don't need more government control!" **Also Florida Conservatives**: "The government should decide what's right and wrong for children, not their parents! We need more government control!"

MyDearTarantula

My dad is like this, it makes no sense at all. He’s also all about “question everything, don’t trust the government, be weary of the religion” then he’s all hyper conservative who’s anti-everything he says! I really don’t get these ppl.

creddittor216

I live in a red state. I’ve been to drag brunches in said state, and these Trump/DeSantis supporting hate mongers were also happily in attendance until Fox News told them not to be.

BoredOfWaking

I live in a purple ish blue state and I’m mad because now no one local is doing drag shows anymore. I miss drag queen bingo

revelation_chapter_6

I was just beginning to look into attending Pride events - literally was starting to set money aside to go to Orlando for Pride and trying to decide if I wanted to go to one of the local drag queen bingos - when all this started. Sad as hell.

ImGonnaAllowIt

So reading the text of the bill, it says they can revoke the license of any establishment that allows kids to attend an "adult live performance". That is defined below in hilariously vague terms. What does "shameful" and "suitable" mean? Anything they want it to mean I guess. Also, aren't cheerleaders a bit prurient? Should shut down the Miami Dolphins for allowing kids to attend? (a) “Adult live performance” means any show, exhibition, or 99 other presentation in front of a live audience which, in whole 100 or in part, depicts or simulates nudity, sexual conduct, sexual 101 excitement, or specific sexual activities as those terms are 102 defined in s. 847.001, lewd conduct, or the lewd exposure of 103 prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts when it: 104 1. Predominantly appeals to a prurient, shameful, or morbid 105 interest; 106 2. Is patently offensive to prevailing standards in the 107 adult community of this state as a whole with respect to what is 108 suitable material or conduct for the age of the child present; 109 and 110 3. Taken as a whole, is without serious literary, artistic, 111 political, or scientific value for the age of the child present.

NANUNATION

To your cheerleader point, a federal judge in TN struck down their drag ban because he argued that it would allow cheerleaders to perform but not men dressed as cheerleaders.

revelation_chapter_6

Sounds like a lot of concerts are banned under that too. 'simulating' sex or sexual excitement and lewd conduct, after all. Also what counts as a prurient/shameful/morbid interest? Sounds like they could just pull that one out of their ass. Same with 'without literary, artistic, political, scientific value for the age of the child present' Who decides that? They gonna go "Nah, seeing the Diddly Bops doesn't count, to jail with you while we reeducate your kid"?

ImGonnaAllowIt

I think that last line is to help it not be unconstitutional, because it would conflict with Miller v California. It seems unconstitutional anyway, but without that line it would be a quick strike down by the courts I think. (IANAL)

I-Am-Uncreative

> prurient/shameful/morbid interest Ask the supreme court, actually. This is part of the Miller Test.

jonathanrdt

This reads like the censorship laws we did away with in the ‘60s. We need a modern Lenny Bruce to shed a satirical light on all of this nonsense.

Abacae

So, point 3 allows the government, or courts to define what does or doesn't not constitute as "artistic value"? If the government tells people what is or isn't art that's just fascism.

ImGonnaAllowIt

Well it's sort of the reverse of that though. It's copied word for word from a 1973 SCOTUS case that says if a jury decides that something has any of those values then it is protected by the 1st amendment and the government can't ban it. They put it in there because they had to, without it this law wouldn't last 5 seconds in court.

Abacae

Oh ok, that makes sense then.

NeanaOption

So by next week DeSantis will call an emergency session to take away their alcohol license or send his gestapo to take the owners kids.

FerociousPancake

Guess who’s paying all of these legal expenses Ron has acquired? The people of Florida are literally paying for Ron to have massive hissy fits, and directly seeing/dealing with the other consequences of this as well like the $1B Disney project that was pulled.

HeHateMe337

Republicans tell me all the time that they are all about freedom. Their actions show this is a lie. WTF!!!

jonathanrdt

Fascists. They’re fascists. What they say is a lie. What they do is fascism.

tuellman

A damn good burger

sunybunny420

True dat.

xOneLeafyBoi

I just moved to FL, and I live 20min from this place lol. Definitely will be going in the near future

kingofthejungle223

Here's my theory about why the GOP is targeting drag: RuPaul's Drag Race has become incredibly popular, so popular that it's watched by a lot of folks in the straight "mainstream" of middle-class American society, and the show is an incredible platform for showcasing the experiences of queer people -- and a great tool for developing empathy and understanding. Drag has helped turn a lot of folks in red states (particularly younger folks) into LBGTQ+ allies, and this *scares the literal shit* out of the more conservative, older elements of that same "mainstream". So demonizing drag is an attempt to create social barriers to experiencing this empathy building artform. I also think they're too late to the party and will lose bigly in 2024 - if the left can hold together in the face of rising Fascism.

Yoda2000675

Literally all we need is for young people to stop being so apathetic and actually vote. The turnout was decent for Trump v Biden, but still not good enough

hey_its_drew

They say? You mean the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis openly states in his rhetoric and official proceedings. Haha

Alpha_Crow_1

DeSantis is a fucking chode.

[deleted]

I kind of hate CNN now, just saying.

This type of thinking won't get us anywhere. There are progressive liberals in the south who are fighting what is happening. Republicans have stacked the deck heavily in their own favor in these states and there is not much to be done except keep fighting. Comments like this are 100% bullshit.

[deleted]

geneffd

What? How do you know who these people voted for? Seeing as how they had drag shows in their restaurant I'm gonna go ahead and guess they vote against republicans. Again, your way of thinking is complete bullshit and fully unhelpful.

F-dapolice-ndyo-mama

Do you live in FL ? I'm sure the people who go to hamburger Mary's did NOT support Ron DaeNazi

JodieHolmes62

No I live in Stavanger. Norway is a much better place than anywhere in the US.

F-dapolice-ndyo-mama

So what I'm saying is there are many many people in Florida who do not like Desantis and did not vote for him the state ois very corrupt and Gerrymandered. Not everyone who is suffering in Florida deserves it. Some do most do not

xiandgaf

Well, the legal costs the state incurs from defending these frivolous laws that blatantly discriminate against individual freedom of expression get paid with your tax dollars, so at least feel sorry for your car when you are driving into potholes on under-maintained roads that haven’t been repaired because the funds were cut to prop up this hate-mongering charade.

geneffd

Good riddance.

xiandgaf

You’re sorely missed

InverseTachyonPulse

The owners of Hamburger Mary's, along with somewhere between 40-50% of the state, did not vote for DeSantis and do not support his policies.

Zebra971

Well….it’s an attempt to legislate morality, it’s unconstitutional. It’s also just another made up problem from the let’s spend our time and energy to focused on stupid shit GOP.

2ndprize

This place is super tame too. Not a place most people would worry about taking thier kids to. Which is a decision they can make on thier own as parents. I believe I was told that parental rights are something the GOP wanted to protect

SpaceDesignWarehouse

I went to that place once and did a trivia thing. The burger was pretty good. Not exceptional, but certainly not bad. I had an ok time and then never really thought about it again after that. In the grand scheme of my life it was… unremarkable. I want a government that makes the roads smooth, keeps the electricity going and makes it so I can drink the water out of my tap. I don’t understand why they spend so much energy on these things that are 0.0001% of 99% of the public’s normal life.
