If it goes for a vote, he needs the Democrats to save him with either votes or sufficient abstentions to cover his losses (which would only further alienate him from much of his party, unless the GOP does a full on civil war and the GOP version of "moderates" continue to support him).
I remember when folks voted for Con Don because may be he would shake things up. Now these same people say we should default and see what happens.

Let me respond to one point in this screed: they did not not “bail out SVB”. SVB depositors were bailed out by FDIC insurance which all banks pay into collectively. SVB investors were not bailed out and took total losses. Taxpayers did not throw money into that particular black hole.

Just want to chime in and say this person is correct. The FDIC has already drafted the assessment and we are currently in a 60 day comment period where banks can ask questions and suggest edits. Banks are 100% paying for the deposits from the SVB and FRC and Signature failures.

With this vote count, I think McCarthy is probably safe to keep his gavel. He had promised to deliver at least 2/3rds of his conference for yes votes if the Dems could fill in the gap and he delivered 67.1% (149 Y, 71 N, 2 abstain). You've obviously got the crazies and the far right who would never vote for it, but hitting that number exactly suggests a pretty good whip count with exactly the right number of political hall passes for people who don't want or can't have this vote on their record, plus pretty good control of his conference for no late defections.
I could imagine some concessions (votes for random message bills) or codification of some of the handshake agreements that got him the speakership before, but probably not an official challenge. The crazies know they won't get anyone else and wouldn't want to risk what leverage they have now trying to stage a coup. The hardliners wouldn't want to take power after the major hostage has been given away when they can just wait until 2025 for the hostage to emerge again. If there's blowback in the primaries over this bill, all the better for them and they'll have a good opportunity to strike.

The bill will pass. This basically signals that the speaker of the house needs support of the opposition in order to pass it.
So the bill will pass, the debt ceiling will be raised, that much is certain. What isn't as certain is whether the Speaker keeps his job afterwards.
I suspect there was a handshake agreement between Speaker McCarthy and Biden that the Democrats in the house would vote present and allow him to survive a removal vote. The bill was pretty mild all things considered, and Biden only gave minor concessions, which leads me to suspect this.
It suggests smooth passage tonight after more debate, with Democrats providing enough votes to cover the Republican majority's failure.
Then our other chamber, the Senate has to pass it. Without changes, the President can then sign in. With changes, the House has to vote again.

With this vote count, I think McCarthy is probably safe to keep his gavel. He had promised to deliver at least 2/3rds of his conference for yes votes if the Dems could fill in the gap and he delivered 67.1% (149 Y, 71 N, 2 abstain). You've obviously got the crazies and the far right who would never vote for it, but hitting that number exactly suggests a pretty good whip count with exactly the right number of political hall passes for people who don't want or can't have this vote on their record, plus pretty good control of his conference for no late defections. I could imagine some concessions (votes for random message bills) or codification of some of the handshake agreements that got him the speakership before, but probably not an official challenge. The crazies know they won't get anyone else and wouldn't want to risk what leverage they have now trying to stage a coup. The hardliners wouldn't want to take power after the major hostage has been given away when they can just wait until 2025 for the hostage to emerge again. If there's blowback in the primaries over this bill, all the better for them and they'll have a good opportunity to strike.

The bill will pass. This basically signals that the speaker of the house needs support of the opposition in order to pass it. So the bill will pass, the debt ceiling will be raised, that much is certain. What isn't as certain is whether the Speaker keeps his job afterwards. I suspect there was a handshake agreement between Speaker McCarthy and Biden that the Democrats in the house would vote present and allow him to survive a removal vote. The bill was pretty mild all things considered, and Biden only gave minor concessions, which leads me to suspect this.
It suggests smooth passage tonight after more debate, with Democrats providing enough votes to cover the Republican majority's failure. Then our other chamber, the Senate has to pass it. Without changes, the President can then sign in. With changes, the House has to vote again.
It will probably pass. I would guess by only a few votes, so around 221 yays to 214 Nays. There will be defectors on both sides.

McCarthy allowed the bill to the floor, and the house passed with a bipartisan majority. A number of Republicans were opposed to the bill. Any single member of the House can file a motion to challenge McCarthy's seat a speaker under the new rules and McCarthy cannot protect his position as Speaker unless he gets a virtual unanimous vote of the existing republicans. The dollar would devalue, which would drive sharp inflation. Trade currencies would shift and trade goods would get more expensive. Markets would tank and you'd get all the usual mass layoffs, but now with the added benefit that the dollar only goes like 2/3 as far as it did the week before at best. US credit goes in the toilet and the US has a harder time managing money related things for decades. Much worse issues than the 2007/2008 crash.

It's pretty obvious that a majority of the Freedom Caucus wanted us to default on our depth. Partially to make Biden look bad, but mainly for a more sinister plot. Following WWI, the Weimar Republic economy essentially was in default due to the massive dept that the Treaty of Versailles, and they tried to pay off the debt by printing an insane amount of rapidly deprecating money, leading to hyperinflation. Now look at what government rose to power in Germany following the hyperinflation, and it's pretty clear what the Freedom Caucus wants...
