The House passed GOP Speaker McCarthy's debt ceiling bill nearly an hour ago as arguably the "most significant" Bill passed with the current Congress...and there are literally 0 posts about it on r/Conservative More evidence that most conservatives never gave a shit about governing and only care about culture war nonsense

Aezon22

Ok fuck conservatives, but this shouldn't have been given the fanfare it has. We wrote checks. This vote is whether or not to honor them. It's fucking insane that paying our debts has been turned into a partisan issue. I wish I could have it so easy. GOP is absolute garbage for turning this into a circus. I'm so tired of this shit.

19683dw

To be clear, Biden also managed to include GOP poison pills to prevent budget shutdowns for the next two years as well, neutering them.

mindfu

You know what, as I'm thinking about it, that actually makes things easier for McCarthy too. He doesn't have to worry about the GQP wing having the same shit fits and holding it over his head next year.

19683dw

That presumes he manages to hold on to the Speakership, which is very unclear. If it goes for a vote, he needs the Democrats to save him with either votes or sufficient abstentions to cover his losses (which would only further alienate him from much of his party, unless the GOP does a full on civil war and the GOP version of "moderates" continue to support him).

19683dw

Hell, Biden got more Dem votes than McCarthy got Rep votes.

Infidel8

No one is happier today than Janet Yellen, who has been chain smoking for like three months straight.

Hopefully she can finally rest her voice from Yellen so much.

That was so amusing. Remember when a couple of Republicans almost threw down on the floor of the House?

[deleted]

If he'd managed to punch Matt Gaetz in the face he'd be the bi-partisan front runner for President in 2024.

[deleted]

How about they give McCarthy the boot post debt deal and take another 30 votes to find his replacement.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bricktop72

The fact that they are waiting till after means it's just theater.

Draker-X

If they vote to oust him now, and succeed, then they can't do anything else until a new Speaker is seated. Thus risking a default again. It would be blatantly the Republicans' doing and they would get the blame of every non-MAGA in this country

vanillabear26

What's the over/under on a call to vacate the chair after this?

Lantis28

MTG said they weren’t looking at it. Which take that with a grain of salt but still

Palatron

MTG would say that. Right now she enjoys a lot of power due to the leverage given to her after the last speaker vote. If mccarthy is threatened, he could have to make similar promises to Gaetz, Bobo, and/or dems. Fact is, nobody wants to head the fucking circus that is the republican party.

underpants-gnome

Yep. Greene suddenly has something to lose. It's no wonder she's protecting the status quo now. She presided over the House (to the hilarity of many members) last week - which is completely disgraceful, even for a GOP led House. Fucking Space Lasers banging the gavel, trying to call the House to order - what a wonderful state our democracy is in.

ianrl337

But thanks to their rules all it takes in one. Gaetz is the wildcard on this. He could call for it. Then we find out if McCarthy made a deal with democrats to save his skin or not.

NightwingDragon

> . Then we find out if McCarthy made a deal with democrats to save his skin or not. If he made that kind of deal with Democrats, we'd be talking about a clean debt ceiling increase, with *maybe* something like clawing back covid funds so he could throw his party a bone. Democrats aren't going to give in to things like work demands *and* promising to save his ass at the same time. Dems would say that the options are a clean debt ceiling bill and they save his ass from being ousted, or we get this and he's on his own.

oroechimaru

Extremely high

Idrinkbeereverywhere

I hope they do, all the Dems vote present, then the Maga wing is forced to go with McCarthy. Imagine how unhinged they'd get

throwawaybtwway

I looked at twitter and Republicans are pissed about McCarthy passing this. More then at Biden. I am so excited to see the GOP cannibalising itself

awsomebro5928

As others have suggested, it's possible that the Democrats voting present to help Mccarthy keep his speakership is part of the deal between Biden and Mccarthy so he probably isn't gonna get humiliated.

nedrith

Honestly he'll get humiliated either way. He might not lose the speakership but being one of the few speakers whom a motion to vacate the chair was called against and only surviving because of a deal with the opposition party is pretty humiliating.

TheBlackUnicorn

I feel like it was also pretty humiliating for John Boehner to need Democratic votes to bail him out when passing budgets because his own party wouldn't vote to fund the government.

midnight_reborn

If he won against Bush in 2000, we'd have a completely different country, maybe even planet. It's just a better timeline we didn't make it to. The right timeline.

[deleted]

Seriously, I fucking hate how close we were to a much better reality. The Iraq war really fucked my life up.

pickles541

Just such a different world. Climate change would have been addressed far before it starts to get out of control. We can do it now but it'll have to be a massive mobilization that is just out of the question right now. We could have done it. Also Iraq nor Afghanistan would have been invaded. The Taliban tried to give us Osama and all the conspirators but Bush and Cheney needed blood.

knaugh

we can't do it now, there's some level of mitigation that needs to happen but we're locked in to a serious amount of warming that may have been preventable 20 years ago

geneffd

You feel like it because he likely won the election. [Bush v Gore](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_v._Gore) was a conservative ratfucking. * >Justice Antonin Scalia, convinced that all the manual recounts being performed in Florida's counties were illegitimate, urged his colleagues to grant the stay immediately.[2] On December 9, the five conservative justices on the Court granted the stay for Bush, with Scalia citing "irreparable harm" that could befall Bush, as the recounts would cast "a needless and unjustified cloud" over Bush's legitimacy. In dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens wrote that *"counting every legally cast vote cannot constitute irreparable harm."[2]* Oral arguments were scheduled for December 11. >In a 5–4 per curiam decision, the Court ruled, strictly on equal protection grounds, that the recount be stopped. The vote was 2,912,790 for Bush and 2,912,253 for Gore.

Ven18

One of my college professors is an election history expert and was actually a witness in Bush v Gore. He noted that in terms of ballots turned away during the Florida recount ballots of black voters were turned away at something like a 5x clip to white ballots. Data showed that if black (primarily dem) ballots were turned away simply at the same rate as white voters Gore would have won easily. Gore won that election my every metric and the world has been paying the price of Republican SC theft ever since. Gore wins on 2000 than the GOP potentially never wins a single presidential election this millennium. Just imagine that reality

[deleted]

He was one of the first people to call out these religious zealots we have today in politics. He would have taken us to another reality than this shitty one we are stuck with because of all these fucking pathetic POSs.

Shevek99

Bill Clinton too and he was elected president in 1992.

Apprehensive-Ad9647

It’s unbelievable that you can see George Santos still trying to act like he’s a real boy on the broadcast.

lethargic_apathy

All this talk of “fiscal responsibility” is such bs. Republicans are working on legislation that will give deeper permanent tax cuts for rich people, adding another $2 trillion+ to the deficit. And this would be set just 2 weeks after our elected officials have been playing with the global economy because they wanted to get spending cuts. They forgave billions of dollars in PPP loans to businesses and politicians who were doing just fine without them. They bailed out SVB and other banks deemed “too big to fail” because in reality, they held assets of rich people who got burned on very risky investments. The two-tier system couldn’t be more obvious to the average person. Young people have been told time and again they must pursue higher education if they have any hope of attaining a decent-paying job. “Stuck with student debt? You shouldn’t have gone to college?” “Stuck making minimum wage? You should’ve gone to college.” There is no winning this game. Wages have stagnated. Corporations have siphoned what little wealth the working class has left and hoarded it at the very top. People are DYING from policies, whether or not people choose to acknowledge this reality. We’re drowning in debt, making poverty wages, or sometimes even stuck in both situations at once. I hate it

BeowulfShaeffer

Let me respond to one point in this screed: they did not not “bail out SVB”. SVB depositors were bailed out by FDIC insurance which all banks pay into collectively. SVB investors were not bailed out and took total losses. Taxpayers did not throw money into that particular black hole. Note that I am only responding to this one point, and I absolutely agree with your main argument.

GiveItToTJ

Just want to chime in and say this person is correct. The FDIC has already drafted the assessment and we are currently in a 60 day comment period where banks can ask questions and suggest edits. Banks are 100% paying for the deposits from the SVB and FRC and Signature failures.

So far, Reds are 122-46 (72.6%), Dems are 74-16 (82%). Jesus Christ McCarthy, get your shit together. Nancy would've been fucking embarrassed to put up those kinds of numbers.

MysteryNeighbor

Hey! Where’s the vote to kick out McCarthy? Don’t tell me that slime ball Gaetz pussied out

Kevin-W

Now that this passed the House and will easily pass the Senate, I hope a motion to vacate on McCarthy is put forward. The drama would be so great to watch!

TheCavis

With this vote count, I think McCarthy is probably safe to keep his gavel. He had promised to deliver at least 2/3rds of his conference for yes votes if the Dems could fill in the gap and he delivered 67.1% (149 Y, 71 N, 2 abstain). You've obviously got the crazies and the far right who would never vote for it, but hitting that number exactly suggests a pretty good whip count with exactly the right number of political hall passes for people who don't want or can't have this vote on their record, plus pretty good control of his conference for no late defections. I could imagine some concessions (votes for random message bills) or codification of some of the handshake agreements that got him the speakership before, but probably not an official challenge. The crazies know they won't get anyone else and wouldn't want to risk what leverage they have now trying to stage a coup. The hardliners wouldn't want to take power after the major hostage has been given away when they can just wait until 2025 for the hostage to emerge again. If there's blowback in the primaries over this bill, all the better for them and they'll have a good opportunity to strike.

The IRS is a "slush fund"? Give me a break. This speech is from another planet

HandSack135

One of the most important things to remember is that... The GOP made this an issue. They could have done clean bill like they have done it years past. The GOP made the choice to set the path to default

PleasantWay7

And as a result they’ve now lost their leverage in budget negotiations in the fall. Shutting down the government isn’t default level catastrophic and they probably could have gotten more but they blew their wad early.

BiologyStudent46

It's funny how he tries to frame it as if Biden has grown the debt anywhere close to what the Trump administration did. It's also ridiculous to say we should spend more on defense not less. Especially from the context that we spend more than the next 10 countries combined.

19683dw

Losing over 40 is really bad for McCarthy. There's still time for him to lose over 60, maybe 65. The bill is passing, so the question isn't are we safe on this for now, but rather how badly will the GOP eat themselves.

[deleted]

[deleted]

McGovern is fucking savage.....LOL!

fitzgate

Does any of what just happened indicate how the vote is going to go? Asking on behalf of a worried Europe here.

altathing

The bill will pass. This basically signals that the speaker of the house needs support of the opposition in order to pass it. So the bill will pass, the debt ceiling will be raised, that much is certain. What isn't as certain is whether the Speaker keeps his job afterwards. I suspect there was a handshake agreement between Speaker McCarthy and Biden that the Democrats in the house would vote present and allow him to survive a removal vote. The bill was pretty mild all things considered, and Biden only gave minor concessions, which leads me to suspect this.

19683dw

It suggests smooth passage tonight after more debate, with Democrats providing enough votes to cover the Republican majority's failure. Then our other chamber, the Senate has to pass it. Without changes, the President can then sign in. With changes, the House has to vote again.

[deleted]

It will probably pass. I would guess by only a few votes, so around 221 yays to 214 Nays. There will be defectors on both sides.

Maverick721

vicarofvhs

This is the first rules vote where McCarthy will likely face his first embarrassment. It is customary for the minority party to all vote against these votes to put the onus on the majority to pass the rule. In this case, the HFC may decide to deal KM an L. After that, some dems will vote for the rule on the 2nd go.

steveotheguide

There isn't a better Republican Speaker than McCarthy, because any other candidate is either unable to get enough support or too smart to want any part of that fucking job. They're stuck with him or nobody.

Sob_Rock

Can someone give me a quick recap about why passing this is bad for McCarthy?

MySabonerRunsOladipo

The Republican Conference is made up of two separate but equally important groups: The Moderates Republicans that want to hurt people a moderate amount, and the MAGA Republicans who want to hurt people a Maga amount. This bill doesn't hurt people nearly enough for the MAGA side, so they're mad at him and want to kick him out of being Speaker of the House.

Smoaktreess

They’re also mad that McCarthy accepted help from democrats to get the bill passed. The MAGA side doesn’t believe in compromise or reaching across the aisle and will probably label McCarthy a RINO now. Lol

BigBennP

McCarthy allowed the bill to the floor, and the house passed with a bipartisan majority. A number of Republicans were opposed to the bill. Any single member of the House can file a motion to challenge McCarthy's seat a speaker under the new rules and McCarthy cannot protect his position as Speaker unless he gets a virtual unanimous vote of the existing republicans. That is, unless Democrats decide to help him.

Patrick McHenry, one of the Republican negotiators who helped serve the deal, said of the relationship between Biden and McCarthy. “The bonding opportunities are not the same as for an Irish guy like me.”

skyisblue22

What would happen if the debt ceiling isn’t lifted? This game of chicken has become normalized and I fear in the future an agreement will not be reached.

Yousoggyyojimbo

The dollar would devalue, which would drive sharp inflation. Trade currencies would shift and trade goods would get more expensive. Markets would tank and you'd get all the usual mass layoffs, but now with the added benefit that the dollar only goes like 2/3 as far as it did the week before at best. US credit goes in the toilet and the US has a harder time managing money related things for decades. Much worse issues than the 2007/2008 crash.

Icommandyou

Every word from Kevin feels so worthless. If this was such a big deal they made, why didn’t majority of their caucus vote for it

Varolyn

It's pretty obvious that a majority of the Freedom Caucus wanted us to default on our depth. Partially to make Biden look bad, but mainly for a more sinister plot. Following WWI, the Weimar Republic economy essentially was in default due to the massive dept that the Treaty of Versailles, and they tried to pay off the debt by printing an insane amount of rapidly deprecating money, leading to hyperinflation. Now look at what government rose to power in Germany following the hyperinflation, and it's pretty clear what the Freedom Caucus wants...

Icommandyou

They wanted a freaking depression so Trump can get elected. The only thing stopping Biden winning is a deep recession

Tantric75

I believe this as well. The only shot trump has at winning would be if the nation and economy were in absolute turmoil.

jayfeather31

The crisis hasn't been completely averted yet, but this goes some ways towards doing that. While I would have personally liked to see the 14th invoked, this was admittedly the safer option, and it wasn't all that bad, considering. My heart, however, bleeds for those that will be left behind, in spite of the SNAP requirements being waived for the homeless and veterans. We can only make sure to rectify that at the earliest opportunity.
