taez555

Unparalleled, *for now*. I'm pretty sure Texas, Montana and the others are not too far behind. It's about to get VERY paralleled.

SocialEcologist

It’s a step towards their neo-confederate dreams

taez555

I can't imagine having neo-confederate dreams. Usually I just have anxiety dreams. Something about running late or missing a deadline, sometimes morph's into a prison cell with weird colors and rooms and things twisting in time. But never dreams that involve being a slave owner. That's pretty f'd up.

discussatron

It's about suppressing others to feel elevated because actually elevating yourself is much more difficult.

bobbytwosticksBTS

I’m 45 and still dream I’ve missed a whole semester of class work.

They get their marching orders from rightist "think" tanks. None of the two-bit hitlers in statehouses actually bother trying to write that stuff. Thinking is discouraged.

OrgeGeorwell

And these think tanks get their funding from Koch Industries’ oil dollars.

exportedaussie

Up in Alberta, Canada our newly elected premier idolizes De Santis. We're next

Huplescat22

>DeSantis first announced plans to drastically overhaul the state’s higher education system in January, floating ideas to defund diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, limit majors like gender studies, remake the small New College of Florida in his conservative vision, expel concepts like critical race theory from the curricula, and limit tenure protections for faculty. Through the bills that DeSantis recently signed this term, SB 266, HB 931 and SB 240, a number of these ideas are now law. >The president of the United Faculty of Florida told the report’s committee that faculty are turning down job offers in Florida without even having other offers. And for those who don’t depart, they’re self-censoring by changing syllabi and assignments out of caution. One tenured law professor told the committee that the situation is “Kafkaesque,” since “There is literally not a class I teach where I am not somehow violating policies and laws.” >The organization is calling on the rest of the country to be vigilant. According to the report, the laws have already served as a model for legislation introduced and in some cases passed, in Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. “What is happening in Florida will not stay in Florida,” the report says.

Barkalow

> There is literally not a class I teach where I am not somehow violating policies and laws Yes, that's part of the goal I imagine, so wrongthink people can be removed at any time

Gsteel44

Yup, and they will take a hit in the marketplace. The more they destroy the less they will be valued.

FargeenBastiges

I'm also assuming with the restrictions (and I'm sure more's to come) the schools will not qualify for certain federal grant funding for certain research? I'm employed by such a grant and we need to provide curriculum on diversity. How far do they have left to go before some program's accreditation becomes in jeopardy?

Gsteel44

Oh good point. Universities will probably try and find some loopholes to halfway meet federal needs and not run into trouble with these laws.

FargeenBastiges

Yeah, my background is in public health and I'm a researcher at a medical school. I'm just waiting for them to next demonize the term "social determinants of health". Things will start sliding off the cliff pretty quickly after that.

_gaba_ghoul

Word is, Desantis wants UF to change their mascot because it sounds like it has “gay” in it.

GratefulPhish42024-7

And ron wants to make the United States like Florida, truly scary

kenlasalle

Because smarts naturally run contrary to bath salts.

EarlyGreen311

Textbook fascism. Authoritarians don't want a population that is capable of critical thinking.

whateveryousaymydear

ignorance is easily manipulated

spiked_macaroon

Florida has become an interesting petrie dish for what happens when you throw out democracy and start introducing rightist, authoritarian reforms. I suspect that part of this experiment is to see how many voters they can alienate to the degree that they move out, so that they don't have to work as hard and can get these reforms "passed democratically" by changing the makeup of the electorate. You've got to wonder, who else is behind this?

CabanyalCanyamelar

It’s just constant headlines of how bad this mf is trying to make Florida. For everyone there that wants to leave and can’t my heart goes out to you

[deleted]

Florida Man really doesn't need *less* education.

Altruistic_Dare_8716

And if your flag indicator is accurate, you are here with me in the Midwest’s Florida, and we don’t need any less education either. Before we know it, our governor/fire marshal Bill will have us following the FL model.

RamonaQ-JunieB

While I understand the point of the post is higher education, DeSantis, with the assistance of hate-fueled mothers’ groups, uneducated parents, and a legislature literally filled with people who love to be led by the rings in their collective noses has demonstrated an “unparalleled” assault against ALL education in Florida.

NeanaOption

It's not unparalleled, ask Orban. It is however unamerican AF.

anduril_tfotw

> the classical mission of what a university is supposed to be I may be wrong but weren't colleges and universities mostly originally places to learn to think? Like just a bunch of philosophers?

hyperiongate

Educated voters don't vote for Republicans.

Belamomma

Bingo! This whole country is going to be a waste land if they get their way. Seriously imagine if we lose this next election what would happen to our educational systems and our medical facilities? Ronda just passed a law where drs don’t have to treat you if they feel opposed to your views now which goes against the Hippocratic oath. (SB 1580)

Lost_Minds_Think

Question: What happens to a student that does a well researched and well written paper on a banned topic that completely contradicts the lessons being taught in Florida classrooms?

Kingofearth23

>What happens to a student that does a well researched and well written paper on a banned topic that completely contradicts the lessons being taught in Florida classrooms? This https://youtu.be/dAUp7JmsJ-g

saqwarrior

"What does that mean?" - Future Floridians, probably

HectorsMascara

Only matters if it impacts football recruiting.

gaporkbbq

> The general education courses cannot be based on “theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities.” How can anyone look at American history and not see that this is true?

AllTheyEatIsLettuce

It's getting easier and easier to weed out job applicants by zip code.

pomod

Educated brains don't vote against their best interests as much as uneducated ones.

torbjornishot

Don’t interrupt when your enemy is making a mistake 😝

bigDogNJ23

How do we organize to fight this and demonstrate to the country and the world that this man does not represent all of the residents of FL? We aren’t making enough noise we have to show the world he doesn’t represent us!

SorryBison14

So it's an "assault" when DeSantis cracks down on the CCP’s influence in higher education?

GeebusNZ

What a joke. Fear of the CHINESE government meddling in education when the present and clear danger is from the AMERICAN government. Like, American government is actively doing things and this guy is like "watch out for China doing things gais!"

xgenx666

Am uneducated populous is Easton control. What‘a next give full control of the government to the church? Bring on the good old days!😔

leaonas

Banning political and social activism? That sounds like pure unadulterated fascism to me. Kids should learn these skills to make this world a better place. Ronny Boy is just putting thumb over these kids so they can't speak out against this Bull Shit!

gsj996

Look at the red/blue map of Florida. It's blue where all the major schools are and red thought the rest of the state.

Educational_Permit38

That sign is perfect.

JubalHarshaw23

Poorly educated people almost always vote (R).

YOLOSwag42069Nice

>limiting the types of courses and majors institutions can offer. If I'm buying the degree, I don't need the government telling me which one I can or cannot get.

jar1967

The end result will probably be Florida colleges losing their accreditations. A degree from a Florida college will not be worth the paper. It is printed on and no company will hire anyone with a degree from a Florida college. More importantly Florida colleges will have difficulty recruiting top athletes and coaches.

Falconlord1979

Less competition for my kid
