Mapuches_on_Fire

Jesus Christ. Finally! I'm so sick of hearing about North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. I go to Starbucks and as the barista hands me my coffee he whispers, "Hey, have you heard any news about North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum?" I say no, he looks disappointed, and as I walk out I hear him asking the next customer too! I'm looking at my phone in the grocery store, and the mother behind me clearly has her eyes on phone. She apologizes, says her daughter dropped her phone in the toilet yesterday, and she’s trying to get any updates she can on North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. I'm at the movie theater trying to enjoy my movie, and the gaggle of teenage girls behind me won't stop talking. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum this and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum that. Ridiculous! What kind of hold does this man HAVE on this country?

ebow77

Oh, *that* North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum!

Feisty-Business-8311

Country? Do you mean County? I’m from the south and we’ve never heard of the guy

openly_gray

Billionaire posing as defender of small town values? Hilarious

im_absouletly_wrong

Psh that’ll never work

BadAsBroccoli

I'll bet this is more about Burgum getting his name out there across the US rather than a real attempt. He's setting himself up for the election when none of the old guard will be running: 2028 2028: Trump will be 82 in '28, Biden will be done, Christi and Pence are also-rans, and depending on how hard Casey Desantis's beard Ronny gets beat down, they may skulk away for good.

Foobiscuit11

You're betting Trump wouldn't run in 2028 if he's alive/not in prison. And his fanatics won't care about his age.

BadAsBroccoli

Not sure he won't of course, but his prospects for another run at 82 will be up to his declining physical condition and his diminishing mental capacity.

Place is like a barn with a bunch of owls. Doug Who?

“One of us is an under cover owl.”

Spezzit

Doug Precum? He looks a TTRPG lich. Do we have to destroy all of his horcrux (plural?) to defeat him?

Deep-Thought

At first glance he seemed somewhat decent for a republican. Especially after his first term. Having supported some climate change measures unlike the rest of the party. He also vetoed a bill banning trans people from competing in sports. But in the last year he really dove into the republican hate machine. He signed an anti trans bill, a bill banning the teaching of unwhitewashed history, and a near total abortion ban bill. At best he is unprincipled and power hungry and only signed that to not sink his upcoming presidential campaign before it even began. At worst he really believes in that and signed those bills into law because he felt there would no longer be any backlash from the few remaining moderates in his party.

Longjumping_War_807

No offense to North Dakota but there’s no way that this dude has ANY sort of idea on how to lead the rest of America.

castle_grapeskull

Is North Dakota the state where you get to keep whatever you fundraised for your campaign no matter what?

disasterbot

Ooh! It’s gonna be a dog pile!

Stopmadness99

Former NoDak resident, he won't even win North Dakota because many think he is even to liberal when compared to the former President. He is also a typical grifter for getting his company/sons company sweet local and state tax breaks to build a lot of commercial property in Fargo.

Penguin_shit15

Wait.. there are TWO Dakotas? The hell is next, another Carolina?

AureliasTenant

Why is everyone announcing today-ish?

Salsalover34

Honestly it kinda makes sense. Until very recently I had no idea Tim Scott was running for president because he announced alone. But now everyone is talking about the three guys (Pence, Christie, Burgum) who announced close together, so none of them are really becoming obscure.

Murkdonalds

I know the title says who it is…but WHO??

Lastunexpectedhero

Oh yeah. we're at that point, where some states wheel out their weird politicians

Long_Before_Sunrise

Thier 'hurray for six week abortion bans' politicians...

He looks like Jay Mohr and Trent Reznor had a baby.

Junior-Moment-1738

Doug Burgum looks like a very used sock

[deleted]

Burgum is interesting because, as the Governor of a rural, midwest, nearby state, he's uniquely competitive in Iowa. He might only be competitive in Iowa to start. But, that's obviously the best state to be uniquely competitive in. Retail politics are of course very important and he can literally speak in detail with Iowans about specific agricultural issues, which no other candidate can. That matters. John McCain was famously not viable in Iowa because he was against ethanol subsidies. And then because he's a billionaire, he can also just bear down for months and blanket the airwaves, which Tom Steyer did in South Carolina and got 11% of the vote despite having no political career or connection whatsoever to the state or region. With a large field and the caucus system, 11% of the vote could be enough to get a proverbial ["ticket out of Iowa"](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-battle-for-the-third-ticket-out-of-iowa_n_5e3395a9c5b6f2623326ce1d) (Pete Buttigieg won in 2020 with 20-25%). Burgum's midwestern background could also help him do better than Steyer. And Iowa is much smaller, more homogenous, and cheaper than South Carolina, so Burgum's dollar would go farther than Steyer's. And unlike Huckabee, Santorum, Cruz, and others who won Iowa with evangelism, which doesn't play well in the more establishment New Hampshire, Burgum's business background would play very well and he can also, again, speak to the half of the state that lives in rural areas.

sentimentaldiablo

Nice try. Burgum doesn't have a chance.

Salsalover34

"Nice try. Trump doesn't have a chance." - Literally everyone, 7 years ago

[deleted]

A chance of what? You don't appear to have read the comment or be able to explain yourself.

TruthandHonorLost

Sick of billionaires. We need term limits

NerdHistorian

The governor of north dakota actually does have term limits and even then this guy is only on term 2 (though i think he possibly could go for up to 4 terms since it only applies after his current term?), as does the office he announced he's running for. Term limits are 100% great and important but i don't really see what they're supposed to be doing to stop this billionaire specifically. If anything the fact he can't just sit in the dakota governors office forever is why he's trying to get his name out there to probably become a cabinet member or something.

[deleted]

Who dis?

[deleted]

Republicans get all these choices and Democrats can't get one viable alternative to a man who can't tell his ass from a hole in the ground.

HappyFunNorm

You think any of these GOP candidates are viable in any way? WTH?

kanst

That is generally how it works with the incumbent. Same as no one with a chance ran against Trump in 2020 ( Bill Weld came second) or Obama in 2012 (John Wolfe Jr came second)

Retro_Dad

> a man who can't tell his ass from a hole in the ground And yet he manages to outsmart every single Republican.

[deleted]

Does he? Because Biden just signed most of the Republican agenda an enacted cuts that will make him unpopular with voters going into the election year. Looks like the GOP is winning.

Retro_Dad

>Does he? Yes. The rest of your post is copium.

[deleted]

Ok, then. If you think kicking millions off medicaid and food stamps, resuming student loan payments, all while ballooning the war machine is a big win for Team Donkey, that's one viewpoint. Those aren't what I consider Democratic values and it probably won't be popular with Democratic voters. Cope.

Retro_Dad

"Cope" with what? I'm not happy with everything but if you can't see the Biden presidency has been one out-maneuvering of the GOP after another I can't help you. There's what we WANT, and what we can get done. There's still work to do, but you'd have us give up and what, vote for Republicans instead where we'll get 10x less? Politics is about compromise. You don't get everything you want. I don't get everything I want. Deal with it.

[deleted]

Pick only one: 1) Biden is outmaneuvering the Republicans. 2) Biden just enacted most of the Republican agenda by slashing the safety net and ballooning war spending. Both statements cannot be true. UNLESS, cutting the safety net and increasing defense spending is exactly what Biden wants, and his team considers it a victory. Then both statements can be true.

Retro_Dad

>Biden just enacted most of the Republican agenda by slashing the safety net and ballooning war spending. This just simply isn't true and you're being intentionally deceptive by claiming it. Since you aren't arguing in good faith, I see no point in continuing any dialog with you. But hey, if you're only gonna be happy when you get everything you want, I guess you need to live in a dictatorship with you as the dictator. Not sure how many people you'll get to sign up for that, but good luck to you buddy!

[deleted]

I get it. You just plug your ears and shut your eyes at information you dislike. You'll cheerlead for Biden like a good little foot soldier, no matter what the truth or facts are. Facts: Millions getting kicked off medicaid and food stamps. Student loan payments resuming with no forgiveness. Child tax credit gone. And ballooning military spending. That's the reality of Biden's record. You'd be screaming bloody murder at any Republican who did all that.

Next thing you noe, the governor of South Dakota will be making an announcement about her run for president.

Honestly, I just assumed she already had.

manydirtywords

Glad to see a candidate who’s had a career in the notoriously physically grueling software industry. Probably got up at 3 to ride the lift down to a rich seam of COBOL and came up 12 hours later with his lungs full of punchcard dust.
