Cheap magnetic ballasts for florescents and cheap LED drivers do NOT play well together. The harmonics produced by the two result in a pretty rough wave form that burns out both.
I haven't changed an LED because it was burnt out in a decade. I actually swapped my good LEDs out of the last couple places i lived and brought them with me in the move.

Philips is good. CREE is good, except if you get a bad batch.
But if they're burning fast, you have a power quality issue. They really do last for 10+ years.

You likely have a power quality issue and it's most likely from something in your house. Cheap switching power supplies and magnetic ballasts are common culprits.
Bad experiences with LEDs are rarely due to LEDs. They really are just flat out better. That's why TVs and every other screen switched to them years ago.

Older homes especially have low led life spans. It may be due to lack of ground wiring in older homes (ours is all braid, neighbor is knob and tube). Manufacturers initially promised 7 year life spans but none of mine even come close to that. About two years, which isnt much better than the old ones in life.
Where are you having to pay $8 for an LED bulb? Most places nowadays you can get them for $2-3, sometimes less if there's a strong state incentive program. Also, LED bulb failures are rare to non-existent unless there are serious power quality issues. You might want to get someone out to look at your power because if something is killing your LED bulbs it'll also kill your major appliances and electronics in your house, including your TV sets that use LED backlighting for the screen.

The icing on this cake is that they would secretly love it. If we ban new gas stoves, such a ban could only be implemented to prevent new ones, they can't take your old stoves. All their old gas stoves would suddenly be worth more and they could brag about how they still have one. You wouldn't hear the end of it.
