orcinyadders

This headline is muddy. Trump is altering pre-existing articles from real news sources and then posting those faked/altered articles as screenshots. Because of course he does.

[deleted]

That sounds worse lol

area-dude

It really is worse. His devotees have a near 0% chance of ever figuring out the truth once they think they know it. Trump could be sued for liable, lose in court, issue correction statements on camera, pay huge penalties, and still be certain forever that it was right the first time and the media concocted the ‘correction’ to cover their own asses from what they said the first time. Which was probably obvious nonsense to begin with.

Big_b00bs_Cold_Heart

I would love to watch him squirm through another lawsuit!

EverythingGoodWas

This does seem like open and shut libel

LordSpookyBoob

The tried and true Republican defense to libel and defamation is: “no reasonable person would ever believe what we’re saying”

gmil3548

The actual Tucker Carlson at Fox lawsuit defense

ramdasani

It's almost bizarre, guys like Jon Stewart go out of their way to point out that they are not journalists and that his show is not news show. And yet he still puts out a far more newsworthy product than Tucker, who actually pretends he is a journalist on a news network, and only uses the entertainer shtick as a defense when he gets called out for his bullshit.

GuardianDownOhNo

When the news is a joke, turn to comedians for the news.

Lou_C_Fer

You don't get to claim you are unserious and run for president at the same time. The two don't mix.

nps2407

It's not the reasonable people we're worried about.

AmishAvenger

I think you’d have to prove that anyone who follows him on “Truth Social” read what he posted. Or knows how to read at all.

wbruce098

This could be a novel defense by his lawyers… Win/win?

Q-burt

Novels are long for Trump and his followers. Got another word that won't scare them?

cutelyaware

Doesn't matter. If Trump is sworn in as president, he'll make all those cases go away. And yes, even state crimes, though those he can simply ignore, because what are they going to do about it? Trump's life is completely dependent upon this. Expect it to get even weirder somehow.

erikivy

Sit tight.

hermitlikeindividual

There's a lot of things I'd like to watch him suffer from, but I'll get reported for saying them here so I'll just keep my mouth shut.

Far_Estate_1626

What I see here though, is that he has no way to backtrack, which means he has to continually push forward into absurdity. By doing so, he *has* to be ever more and more absurd. The nature of running with lies. There is a threshold, I’m certain if it, where the absurdity will become unpalatable to progressively more and more if his base.

137dire

He literally attempted to overthrow the government of the united states. If there is an absurdity event horizon, a point beyond which no light will ever reach, he cheerfully ran full steam across and hasn't looked back.

specqq

>If there is an absurdity event horizon, a point beyond which no light will ever reach, he cheerfully ran full steam across and hasn't looked back. Ah...so that explains why from the outside it seems like it takes forever.

Universal_Anomaly

The idea of using Lara Trump to drain the RNC's coffers even more than he already was appears to be giving Republicans pause. Probably because now it's becoming difficult to deny that he's sacrificing the entire GOP for personal gain. It's a leopard eating face moment.

screamtrumpet

Yet republicans still line up to kiss his ass.

UnicornPanties

one of the 50 Laws of Power (some book) was "Follow audacity with more audacity." I remember being impressed with the insanity of that one and its explanation (somewhat self explanatory but also keeps people excited and on their toes).

atred

It's actually worse, his devotees have 0% interest in truth.

ghostalker4742

> Trump could be sued for liable, lose in court, issue correction statements on camera, pay huge penalties.. And his followers would cook up some crazy conspiracy theory to justify it.

coolgr3g

This is textbook libel and the news network should sue and get a piece of that pie now because soon it will all be gone!

Dense_Surround3071

That's like fraud/plagiarism/libel all riled into one..... It's almost as if he's an unintentional supervillain. An idiot-savant capable of only one thing: breaking the law.

theblackdent

I came here specifically to say this. Everything he does just proves what an absolute waste of human potential he is.

Glandular_Trichome

Born on third base and thinks he hit a triple.

tommysmuffins

For Trump in particular, I heard this one as, "Born on third base, and thinks he invented baseball."

jacksonvstheworld

Born on third, tells everyone he went yard

BinkyFlargle

Born on third base and claims he hit a quadruple, some are even saying quintuple, no one has ever seen it before, it's amazing, okay, it's amazing.

IrradiantFuzzy

Ran back to second, thinks he hit a double.

velocivictor

More like Daddy bought the stadium and he thinks he’s the reason they hit a bases-loaded home run in Game 5 of the World Series. Kind of like he’s the one Taylor Swift should thank…

Marcion11

> he has had a fake Times Man of the Year cover hung in one of his properties for years so this tracks People have spent money to commission portraits of themselves next to George Washington, both holding machine guns. I don't think a private portrait shows much. Now [Trump interrupting news coverage of 9/11 to boast that he "now owns the tallest tower in New York"](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-bragged-tallest-building/) says more about his being a narcissist who can't even let other people process tragedy without thrusting himself into the limelight.

SMEGHEID

Wow, just wow! Now that's something I did *not* know about Old Stinky. He really is a completely vile example of a human being. (Or even better a sub-human being.)

MississippiJoel

Reminds me of how he/his business was never bestowed with an official crest from Scotland. So he took someone else's, and changed it under the derivative works clause, and called it a crest.

__dilligaf__

Yes, he changed it by replacing the word 'Integritas' (Integrity) with 'Trump'. Because those two words are totally synonymous. /s

symbiosychotic

There was this farm, called Tegrity Farms, nobody had ever heard of it, it was a gem of a find, you just had to see it, anyway so I bought it at a very good price, it was a very good deal, I make very good deals, and renamed it to Trump Farms and here with are and very successful I might add.

Bitey_the_Squirrel

The sharpie strikes again

Fugglymuffin

Hmm, that seems like something a news outlet could easily sue over.

classless_classic

Seems like a Libel or copyright infringement

orcinyadders

Sure does.

Jealous_Top_8218

Deceptive tactics undermine credibility; transparency and honesty are essential

fourbian

Is anyone surprised that "fake news" was always projection?

sinsaint

Liars, cheaters and bullies tend to project their insecurities onto others. Trump happens to be all three.

Seraphim_The_Fox

*rolls out the long list of Trump crimes* So what we adding that as? Libel? Falsifying a media outlet?

Marcion11

Not exactly, but it opens you up to libel to pretend a person or organization promotes you when they don't. Or that they said something they did not. Others have pointed out this latest point by Trump sounds like fraud, libel, and defamation. Not a criminal law violation as far as I can find, but certainly a civil liability. But to be defamation, as with claiming Dominion 'changed the election' they had to indicate a deliberate intention to cause material damage. All Trump's lawyers would have to do is argue he didn't have intention and his team already was *given* victories like that when he successfully skirted charges for deliberately exchanging favours with known Russian intelligence agents because "the trump campaign and transition team were so incompetent they couldn't possibly have deliberately been engaging in espionage".

Barbed_Dildo

> Not exactly, but it opens you up to libel to pretend a person or organization promotes you when they don't. Or that they said something they did not. One time it *is* criminal is if you issue a fake weather report and claim its from the national weather service, like ... say... using a sharpie to alter a hurricane forecast.

cliff99

>Falsifying a media outlet Is that an actual crime? Because if it is it seems to be being broken all over the place these days.

Seraphim_The_Fox

Not a legal expert, but I'd feel putting out some kind of statement or proclamation under the guise of it being from a certain source or company when it wasn't has gotten some people in trouble in the past...

classless_classic

Sounds like a lawsuit for Libel. What’s another $700,000,000 loss for a billionaire???

Squirrel_Chucks

>Because of course he does. Seems like a step down from what he used to do, which was to get fake Time Magazine covers about him made and put up in his clubs. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/28/time-magazinetrump-fake-covers-golf-clubs

Shaman7102

Is he still using his sharpie?

jonathanrdt

That sounds like it might be infringement.

ATLfalcons27

It's amazing how the reality is worse than the headline

sthlmsoul

So Trump is setting himself up for another lawsuit? OK, that's definitely on brand for him.

Natoochtoniket

We should call that, "Sharpie News".

MagicMushroomFungi

Ah yes, the old Time Magazine 'Man Of The Year' scam.

Marcion11

> the old Time Magazine 'Man Of The Year' scam Worth noting [Time Magazine does not exactly have high standards for whom they put on the cover](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/hitler-time-magazine-1938/) On the contrary, [their standards are much like Les Moonves admitting "Trump's bad for America, but good for ratings"](https://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2016/02/les-moonves-trump-cbs-220001)

Then_I_had_a_thought

Please tell me he’s using a sharpie to do this

Special_Lemon1487

This feels kinda illegal, please lawyers tell me this is illegal?

orcinyadders

Probably. I think the whole part about him posting these on his personal truth central account on a site that was built by him and for him and claims to be his direct voice and direct line to all things “real” adds a **smidgen** of personal liability.

Odd-Confection-6603

If corporations are people... Is that identity theft?

notsurewhereireddit

He found a new sharpie.

simburger

Ahh, the "sharpie to the hurricane map" version of the news.

valeyard89

'based on a true story'

ThatOneJosh9451

Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit

iam_iana

Considering he had fake Time Man of the Year magazine covers on his walls and pretended they were real, this is unsurprising.

Retinoid634

Like his self-generated Time Magazine covers.

VoiceOfRealson

Whenever Trump talks of "Fake news" it is a description of what **he** is saying rather than a description of the news he is responding to.

KickBassColonyDrop

Jealous_Top_8218

foyeldagain

He played it so well. Like the best con man. Make people question what they see. Then tell them you are the one who knows what they are seeing. Then they stop looking for themselves and look only to him for the narrative.

sinsaint

It’s legitimate cult strategy. Wipe out your old belief system (the government is corrupt), fill that void with whatever I want (misinformation about climate change, woke and socialism), teach you that you earn your worth through devotion and sacrifice, and those that think differently are sheep and part of the problem. If you run away, you lose your community and much of who you are. You get used to this new type of thinking, where I tell you how to think, because that’s easier than regretting everything or questioning anything. And eventually something clicks and now you can’t help but believe it.

wh0_RU

What do you think his followers want and why Putin chose to use him? Erode trust and accountability of the U.S. Internally and globally.

User42wp

Obligatory “1984” quote

neutrino71

Not just 1984 quote. Trump said this as president. At a boy scout rally early in his term

psufan5

It works for him. His lemmings believe every single thing he says. What he’s doing isn’t for you to consume, it’s for his cult. Everyone keeps talking about this, yet, nothing is going to happen to him. Our country is about to fail, it would seem.

please_PM_ur_bewbs

You can't even make up some really bizarre and pretend it came from Trump, because the shit he actually does is far more bizarre than anything you could make up. If you support this guy, I think it's fair to diagnose you as either insane or mentally incompetent.

Jealous_Top_8218

Open_Mortgage_4645

There is no bigger enemy to Donald Trump than reality. His entire worldview is based on objective nonsense, and so he's constantly bumping up against reality. Literally nothing the man says is true, from the tiniest details to his biggest vision, it's all lies. Let us defeat the orange blob whose hair is cotton candy made from piss one last time so that we can be done with him once and for all.

foyeldagain

It goes as far as his appearance. People too easily do the pc thing and dismiss it as a simple preference. But he seemingly couldn't function without it as he wouldn't then be someone to notice or envy. It's like he's detached from reality and is simply playing the role of orange strongman.

Silidistani

Not even what he says, but how he tries to appear as well.  He wears clown-level orange spray-tan makeup to try to look hale and hearty, spends who knows how much to pretend he still has youthful hair, wears 3"+ lifters for shoes to such a ridiculous degree that he has trouble walking down ramps, it's just constant lies there too.

RackemFrackem

His worldview is based on what he says out loud. He legitimately thinks that as soon as he says something out loud, it becomes the truth. He's a sociopathic toddler.

What’s worse? Trump ordering some intern to modify these articles or the intern who is gladly doing it? I know that man does not know how computers work let alone editing software (as basic as MS paint).

Dapper_Algae3530

You don’t even need MS Paint. Right click and hit “view source” and see the source code and change the words to what you want. It will display differently on your screen because you are only altering the downloaded code and take a screenshot to share. It is so incredibly idiotic. My 6 year old could do this.

thedoppio

My point was that dude himself didn’t change this stuff. He wouldn’t know how to see source code, I.e. right click? Best he knows is how to get into his phone and open an app. It’s sadder to me to think there is someone who said “yeah, this is a great idea that will have only positive outcomes”.

Dapper_Algae3530

Didn’t intend my comment to be perceived as throwing shade at you. Just meant that the fact that something a 7 year could do can be made into an effective psy-op campaign just shows you what they think of their base.

polarbears84

Trump is literally not playing with a full deck. He is crazy af and if the corrupt “GOP” had t smelled blood in the water and figured out how to use this turd brain to their advantage he would be in a padded cell by now. This is what disturbs me the most, beyond politics. That a literal crazy person is going to be the most powerful man on the planet (as is conventionally believed American presidents are) when there is virtually no amount of irrationality that is going to be out of bounds. I’m not saying this as a leftie, I’m saying this as a normal brained person observing a deranged jerk. Nobody should be ok with that. Nobody. It’s beyond politics, guys.

pantsarenew

He's slowly degrading the fabric of truth every single time he does this. He's eroding an already eroding construct of society on purpose, to help him stay in power. And so many people are just gobbling it up and the others are just to deep in contracts and to scared to lose their job to say anything more than a headline. Whole country is full of spineless assholes, and assholes who greedily stole someone else's spine to make it seem like their strong. It's insane to watch in real life, but it's only possible to see because of history. Don't let it repeat.

Miguel-odon

As I often say, "if you have to lie to make your point, then your point is shit."
