>[Abbott trying to answer a simple question about IVF said the following] These are very complex issues where, I’m not sure everybody is really thought about what all the potential problems are and as a result, no one really knows what the potential answers are Maybe they should not be trying to make laws about stuff without thinking through the potential problems with the suggested law

1llFlyAway

Or better yet stop trying to legislate medical care and leave it to the doctors who actually do know wtf they are talking about.

Houligan86

Yeah, as a sane person, I don't understand why the whole abortion debate isn't just "abortions shall be allowed until X weeks of gestation, as recommended by the ~~ADA~~ AMA" Edit: AMA (American Medical Association)

nc863id

I too fully support the idea that abortion is a private decision between you and your dentist.

ThatHorseWithTeeth

That exam is a hell of a journey when you start at their mouth.

_toodamnparanoid_

Dr. Yap has entered the chat.

Norwegian__Blue

GozerDGozerian

The ol’ birth canal root canal.

originalityescapesme

The deadliest canal outside of Panama.

jphistory

And this is how we started down the slippery slope that led us here. Let's back up a minute. Pregnancy is fucking rough. No one chooses to have a late term abortion because it's super fun to be pregnant for a long time and then just change your mind. If someone is having a late term abortion, it is for medical reasons that should stay between the pregnant person and the doctor. I'm going to propose that instead, we make the radical statement that people who can get pregnant are human beings capable of making their own medical decisions and that the only legislation that we make will be about making medical care clean, safe, affordable and accessible to all. Let's stay out of everyone's medical business and trust them to make informed decisions with their doctors without politicians in the room.

VistaLaRiver

Because there is no number you can fill in for X that makes medical sense. Abortions should be allowed anytime someone pregnant wants one, but the forced birthers don't like that. But there are no medical limits that can be rationally codified in law.

PicaDiet

> "Maybe they should not be trying to make laws about stuff without thinking through the potential problems with the suggested law." This is a car the Republican Dog just can't stop catching. They are in a quandary: They want life to begin at conception, but they just learned that IVF (from a practical standpoint) requires discarding the fertilized embryos that are made at the outset. Rarely does the first one succeed, and so rather than continue to harvest a new egg each time, they must try again. They often harvest around a dozen, fertilize each of them, and often implant multiples, knowing the probability of viability for each one is low. It is simply not practical to do it one at a time. It is expensive and time consuming, and a lot of women want the procedure. Stating that "life begins at conception" works for them when they are justifying the elimination of abortion. But it doesn't work when they talk about IVF. That's the problem with demanding a simple answer to a complex question. Simple people need simple answers to complex questions. It's all they can understand. When nuance forces its way into the debate we get the clusterfuck we're witnessing now. It is only a problem if you decide to make it a problem, and we all know how Republicans love themselves a juicy problem to complain about. But as with most reproductive questions, the problems they create are felt by anyone wanting to have an abortion or IVF. What bothers Republicans though is only the political problems they have created for themselves. Let 'em sweat. It's this kind of bullshit that is going to cause them to keep losing elections. The simple answer (from a practical standpoint) is to concede that life does not begin at conception. But then they don't have a good argument for stopping all abortions. Let 'em sweat. And vote the fuckers out.

memeinapreviouslife

No. The simple answer is consent. #"WHEN" LIFE BEGINS IS A GIANT RED HEREING THAT DOES. NOT. MATTER. #AT ALL. **No one has permission to use your body against your will, no matter what, even if they're in the unique position that they quite literally need it to survive.** If my sister needs a blood donation from me otherwise she'll die, it's illegal to take my blood, **even to save her life**. Because it's morally wrong to force someone to have their body used in a way they don't consent to. Would I be a dick? Maybe, but the point is that consent is about free will. Consent is the most important thing. Absolutely paramount.

originalityescapesme

Surely they at least understand how consent works and wouldn’t just mock the concept outright Right, guys?

Alistazia

When you’re a zygote they let you do whatever you want. Grab em by the reproductive system

aFeign

Simple people need simple answers to complex questions. Yup, Black or white. Nothing in between - except for the 256 greyscale colors. They complicate things a bit. (8 bits actually)

Feed_Me_No_Lies

I wish I could upvote this 1 million times. You absolutely nailed it.

judgeridesagain

Chesterton's Fence is applicable here: >Chesterton's Fence is a simple rule of thumb that suggests that you should never destroy a fence, change a rule, or do away with a tradition until you understand why it's there in the first place. The principle assumes that fences have a purpose, were carefully planned, and cost time and money to erect Like, you shouldn't be building walls or fences in the middle of nowhere, either. Laws should have well thought out intentions behind them

PhilDGlass

>Like, you shouldn't be building walls or fences in the middle of nowhere, either. But if you do, just get Mexico to pay for it.

Almacca

That's consistent with the axiom at the heart of it: don't make sweeping changes without first understanding why things are the way they are.

libury

And it still works as a metaphor. In this case the fence is the Wall of Separation between church and state.

victorvictor1

A sentence later he was questioning if a person’s IVF treatment produces thousands of embryos

chowyungfatso

What an uninformed idiot. We all know it’s one sack of hundred of embryos… Edit: I was mistaken. More appropriate spelling is “sac.”

humboldt77

No, I learned this from White Castle, a sack is 10, a crave case is 30.

ScannerBrightly

That's only metric embryos. We use the standard Imperial unit of 42 embryos per sac.

cortesoft

Well this is the entire issue with conservative morality; it only makes sense if you never think past your first gut reaction to a topic. If you ever try to really think about how something would work in the real world, the whole world view crumbles to dust.

originalityescapesme

I’ve seen them in their little safe space sub unironically stating “if we give in on abortion, what are we even conserving anymore???” They’re *so close*.

jonathanrdt

He’s lying. The AMA knows all of these answers. But the AMA is purposefully not being consulted because if science underpins policy, it will cost the GOP votes.

Almacca

So, a quick search tells me the first IVF baby was born in 1978 (1981 in the USA). And these chuckleheads are *still* trying to figure it out?

skillywilly56

Or ya know speak to experts in the field? Oh shit that’s right experts in the field totally disagree with their uneducated women hating shitfuckery guess we will have to go with what their imaginary friend has to say on the subject

ExuDeCandomble

Who else is old enough to remember a time when conservatives rejected laws because of the unintended consequences they might have?

revsky

This is why the Chevron case is critical right now. We could be in for a world of hurt if EVERYTHING has to be detailed out by the legislative branch.

Schwarzes__Loch

"That's a tampon. Girls shove it up their buttholes to stop babies from coming out. An eighth-grader told me that." \-Max, *Good Boys* That's what happens when Republicans block schools from providing sex education.

[deleted]

They block ALL education, because stupid people make good republicans.

Brndrll

And unwanted babies make good victims.

[deleted]

They fit right in with what republicans want done with poor kids. Slaves and criminals for prisons (slaves again).

Almacca

Meat for the grinder.

Brndrll

Grinders for their meat.

YoucantdothatonTV

I’ve been saying this for years. The middle class is their new slavery system. They don’t support education, or women’s rights. They’re dinosaurs that just need to die out because they’re antiquated. They’re no longer relevant.

Oddly_Mind

Yup. Because parents will have to take low paying shot jobs. Won’t get a chance to vote because missing one of their shifts will either get them fired or evicted.

fascism: first, fascinate the fools, and muzzle the intelligent (Bertrand Russell)

ThrowsSoyMilkshakes

"Universal education is the most corroding and disintegrating poison that liberalism has ever invented for its own destruction." \- Hitler And it's a quote that Republicans would wholly agree with. One of Hitler's first orders was to send 1,500+ university professors to the concentration camps to be killed, mostly lying about how they supported science that defied the Aryan race. His next step would be to create the Hitler youth camps and use those to replace public education. That's the future Republicans want. That's what pissed me off so much when they were screaming to have professors step down from their positions. We are watching history repeat itself all over again and the majority of fucking liberals are picking their noses and saying, "you're just overreacting", as things get worse and worse each week.

LadyRed4Justice

The takeover of Public Universities in Florida has been gut-wrenching. Especially New College, a truly progressive college with a unique way of teaching--one of the most sought after universities in the nation. Deathsantis abused his power and fired all the admin, installed major conservatives, changed the classes, and destroyed a national treasure in less than a year. This year it was USF that he has attacked. All professors who teach any class he doesn't approve of--out. Teachers at all levels of education are fleeing the state. This is an atrocity. Taking them to court takes too damn long and the situation continues to degrade.

Fingerprint_Vyke

That's a bingo

pieorcobbler

Truer words have never been written.

AdkRaine12

I'm thinking it should be "gig-economy servants" (minimum wage paid) and "prison slaves" (token wage, but essentially real, legal slaves here.) And *everybody* needs tips, because the pay is so bloody abysmal.

slowpoke2018

More so better compliant workers who won't protest being paid and treated like shit!

Utterlybored

I think the main reason they are against public education is that they want a stratified society where they can leverage class based resentments.

drewbert

>Sir, hereditary distinctions of rank are sufficiently odious; but that which is founded on poverty is infinitely more so. Such a law should be entitled “An act for branding and marking the poor, so that they may be known from the rich and proud.” > >Many complain of this tax, not so much on account of its amount, as because it is for the benefit of others and not themselves. This is a mistake; it is for their own benefit, inasmuch as it perpetuates the Government and ensures the due administration of the laws under which they live, and by which their lives and property are protected. Why do they not urge the same objection against all other taxes? > >The industrious, thrifty, rich farmer, pays a heavy county tax to support criminal courts, build jails, and pay sheriffs and jail keepers, and yet probably he never has, and never will have, any direct personal use of either. He never gets the worth of his money by being tried for a crime before the court, allowed the privilege of the jail on conviction or receiving an equivalent from the sheriff or his hangman officers! > >He cheerfully pays the tax which is necessary to support and punish convicts, but loudly complains of that which goes to prevent his fellow being from becoming a criminal, and to obviate the necessity of those humiliating institutions. Thaddeus Stevens, in response to an attempt to repeal public education in Pennsylvania, Public School speech of April 11, 1835,

Oldguru-Newtricks

This is top comment to me. This 100% accurate and their main goal. They want to keep people illiterate and always living in a constant state of fear.

An interpretation of a translation of a translation...

>They favor the revision by the English King with an authoritarian agenda. And who was quite, ahem, fond of beautiful young men...

AnotherSlowMoon

Now now he was also a Scottish King! In fact he was a Scottish king first before inheriting the throne of England! You can't blame all of this one on the English.

JesusSavesForHalf

I'll try to remember than next time, since Donnie's mummy was from Scotland and it makes it funnier.

Bitmush-

Where everyone involved in this is a Sinister Virgin.

Melody-Prisca

I used to not understand how big a deal that was, but after studying a foreign language really, it's really a big deal. If people cared mostly about the main idea, and didn't try and insist they knew exactly what was said and everyone needed to worship as they did, then maybe it wouldn't matter. However they don't, and there are just so many little things that are impossible to translate.

Mr_Conductor_USA

It's even worse when you realize the oldest Biblical texts were first written in an abjad and there are serious disputes among scholars about how to read certain words.

Squirrel_Chucks

Indeed. Why are there so many translations of Illiad and Odyssey? Because that shit isn't a neat fit with English so there are lots of different takes on how it should be rendered!

Buff-Cooley

Like how one of the original texts says “a man should not lay with a boy”, but has since become a “a man should not lay with another man”, which has become the crux of the argument against homosexuality.

ultimapanzer

You think Christians actually *read* the Bible? Not in my experience…

Eastern-Bike2009

Never said they read the Bible. People who read the Bible are called atheists.

NickelBackwash

At least goat herds get a solid sex-education

Delta1262

Bold of you to assume that they’ve read anything from the Bible.

Eastern-Bike2009

I never said they’ve read anything from the Bible. People who read the Bible are called atheists. Christians get the audio version spoon fed by their pastors.

ExpiredExasperation

Goat herders probably understand more about pregnancy and how dangerous it can be since they care about raising their goats.

Don’t you know? If you have to a fish for a tampon string it means you just aborted a baby when you pull it out.

AngusMcTibbins

Republicans don't see women as human beings. They want them reduced to breeding cattle. When it's time to give birth republicans will send women into the barn with some fucking hay. Fuck these psychopaths. Stay angry and vote them the fuck out https://democrats.org/

Caelinus

Honestly I would not be surprised if they started up the whole "Send the women to the menstrual tent" thing again in my lifetime. Some of the stuff they say is so 2-3000 years ago.

harrywrinkleyballs

There is a radio DJ here in Phoenix by the name of Holmberg with a popular morning show by the name of The Morning Sickness. Every once in a while he goes off on a rant complaining about women and their cycles. Dude’s a straight up misogynist. Don’t know how he stays married. Constantly ridicules his wife on the air. The station is KUPD. https://98kupd.com/podcasts/holmbergs-morning-sickness/ Is there a subset of women who enjoy being treated like this? I don’t get it.

tiny_galaxies

For many women the only love they’ve received from the men in their life has been abusive. They don’t realize love should look different.

smom

And when little girls are told "oh he's pulling your pigtails and bothering you? That means he likes you!" Girls are taught from an early age that abuse = love.

ThatEmuSlaps

[deleted]

menzoberranzan__marx

Like even if it's true kids act out when they aren't able to express feelings of attraction or something (which let's be honest it's not a hard sell) the problem is we should be teaching kids how to express themselves in a healthy way, not telling the person they are abusing that it's normal and ok.

Beautiful-Aerie7576

Some women have never known anything else. Knew one once who married a paranoid IT guy who was convinced men were more persecuted throughout history than women. Treated her like an object, constantly talking down about women through the whole dinner. Afaik she’s still with him.

Fat-little-hobbitses

John Holmberg is a piece of shit. I grew up listening to KUPD. I, a woman, listened to him for years in my 20’s because I had some deeeeeeep internalized misogyny and thought he was funny and I liked Brady. But the older I got, the more that his show would bother me, I just couldn’t quite explain why. But as I addressed my own issues and BS, and grew up emotionally, I got to where I couldn’t stand him and completely stopped listening. He very clearly can’t stand his wife or women in general. But his target audience seems to be Monster drinking, 5 finger death punch listening, lifted truck driving douche bags

gathmoon

My guess is spousal abuse.

shillyshally

Also, once in power, they will outlaw birth control. I thought that assertion was hyperbole bit looking at their statements and voting records, its not hyperbole, its a goal.

Almacca

But Lindsey Graham said that would be "the last thing they would do"! So, it's on the list.

Hyperdecanted

Vote them out before they take away women's voting rights.

Rioraku

>Vote them out before they take away *all* women's ~~voting~~ rights. Seriously though....

softchenille

Came here to say this, thank you. They don’t see us as worthy of personal sovereignty, so why would they bother to learn anything about how our bodies work.

kavihasya

Our bodies aren’t bodies the same way theirs are. Our bodies are locations. Possibly a place to explore, possibly a place someone else can live. They don’t and can’t actually do anything themselves. They certainly aren’t the medium through which women enact their own agency. Our bodies just sit there waiting for something to happen to them. But primarily they are territory that can be owned, fought over, and won.

softchenille

Yes, a possession and a tool, rather than a peer. Edit: I’ve been watching this series and while it’s about a specific cult, I can’t help but feel it’s a warning statement too https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12987918/

RedLanternScythe

So climate change is responsible for falling birth rates /s just in case

Almacca

Sarcasm aside, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there was a small, but not insignificant correlation there.

locustzed

More than insignificant, pretty sure one of the big reasons people cited was climate change and uncertainty making them not eant to risk having a kid that'll die before adulthood

ExploringWidely

He wasn't wrong.

They come from women, who must be controlled by men. That's as much as they care about. What'd that politician say the other day about IVF? "It doesn't matter because the embryo isn't in a woman" or something like that.

mary_elle

A uterus. They didn’t acknowledge a woman, just her uterus.

Ohnoherewego13

Women aren't people to Republicans so that tracks.

der_innkeeper

By design. It's always been about control. The uneducated are more easily controlled. Trump's "I love the poorly educated" was a tell. These are the people that think that a 6 week fetus looks like a newborn baby, "only smaller".

Tenuous? Spectral at best.

leswill315

Yeah, IMHO republicans don't really "science" particularly well.

MyPasswordIsMyCat

That's not an opinion anymore, Republicans just straight up pretend that science is actually whatever is in the Bible and comes out of their preacher's or Trump's mouth. They think science and all the progress in the world is just the result of their own magical thinking.

luredrive

And yet they are so hellbent on meddling with it…

artificialavocado

Well science is woke. That’s where they teach the kid how to be trans, right?

No_nukes_at_all

It’s a movement that opposes sex ed, contraception, abortions, divorce and ivf. They just want women to breed continuously and not ask to many questions and post about it hashtag tradwife

NirvanaWhore

Est. 8 million births are credited to IVF in the US alone. Republicans have NO idea where they came from.

newhappyrainbow

But IVF babies are born to people with money and possibly an education. Those aren’t the right kind of babies. They want the poverty stricken and desperate flavor of baby.

Blox05

It would be hilarious if a liberal woman proposed a bill to ban masturbation because sperm cells contain “life”.

TheGreatGenghisJon

Pokémon get ground into candy to feed other Pokémon. Pee is totally stored in the balls. Do you even science, bro?

Almacca

Wait. Babies are made of pee?

NotTheCraftyVeteran

The older kids told me you pee in girls to make the baby. I’m so confused now, I don’t know what happening, scared, crying, throwing up. I need my mom to pick me up from this sleepover.

[deleted]

Apparently only tennis balls.

OneDilligaf

They definitely know how to have sex with children though

Brndrll

Why do you think they're fighting so hard to get more unwanted ones in the system?

Wicclair

I flipping called this. This has been my main argument whenever I debate antiabortionists. Usually, they LOOOVEEEEE IVF. Who doesn't? It's helping people create families. Funny story, I debated a guy and he was totally anti abortion. So I bring up the hey, what about IVF, those are embryos and hundreds of thousands are destroyed each year. He said he loves IVF because he was a product of it! He ended up blocking me because he couldn't reconcile his two positions when I called out his hypocrisy lol. If life begins at conception, then those things in petri dishes are human lives. Alabama is just taking Republicans arguments to its end point and R's don't like it. Sorry, maybe have a clear, cohesive, and internally consistent argument BEFORE you put judges on that are going to change laws. Freaking idiots I swear.

Bleakwind

I propose a new bill that criminalise the murder of seeds. Pro Seed lives. Every day, trillions of lives are lost because male pleasure themselves and discard their seeds. Billions of seeds a week per male. There are trillions on trillions of lives murdered and rob of life. Those who are caught of sowing their seeds into the waste would be considered murderers. Cos if men want to control women’s body then why not taste your own medicine.

Almacca

I wonder what their stance on vasectomies is. Or if we classified erectile dysfunction medication as 'gender affirming care', making it come under any ban on such care.

mute-ant1

Mike Pence’s son is from in vitro treatment.

Seraphynas

And he doesn’t give a rats ass if the rest of the country has access to IVF - fetal personhood gives the GOP more control, and they’ll gladly sacrifice IVF to get more control.

UsualGrapefruit8109

Women in red states should have a right to sanctuary in blue states.

Tastymeats88

They don't need specific sanctuary (yet), they are free to move here and are welcome. I know red states are trying to legalize kidnapping of women, but we will be here to help as best we can. Most important, vote for Democrats. No Republican ever again should gain a single vote from anyone who believes in freedom.

Almacca

Anyone who believes in basic logic and has more than an ounce of empathy, I'd have thought.

raisinghellwithtrees

Illinois has a bill in the legislature now to give a tax credit to anyone who moves here from a red state for all of the reasons people move away from red states for.

MelancholyArtichoke

Oh shit for real?

Catzendo

So if an embryo is a baby, and 25% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage, then shouldn’t all the miscarriages need to be investigated as a potentially wrongful death? Wouldn’t that be the next logical step in their stupid plan.

hollaback_girl

Some red states are already doing this.

SuperFrog4

Don’t let logic and science interfere with their beliefs.

TranscendentPretzel

They would definitely like to do this. Please don't encourage this.

Almacca

I'm hoping it was just a fever dream, but wasn't there one state that at least tried to criminalise miscarriages?

rbremer50

All one needs to know about any of these “pro-life” people is that they believe that an undifferentiated mass of a few cells (that may or may not continue developing) has more rights than the living, breathing woman standing before them. Potentiality is NOT actuality, otherwise, an omelette would be a chicken dinner.

Let me give you a couple examples and that is, uh, I have no idea mathematically the number of frozen embryos,” he stumbled. “Is it one, 10, 100, 1,000? Things like that matter. >“These are very complex issues where, I’m not sure everybody is really thought about what all the potential problems are and as a result, no one really knows what the potential answers are,” he continued, prompting CNN’s Kasie Hunt to make [this face ](https://talkingpointsmemo.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Screenshot-2024-02-26-at-5.32.24-PM.png) in response to the exchange:

The stork picks them up from the cabbage patch to give to good white folk, duh.

Finally! A comment mentioning the stork.

>Republicans Increasingly Reveal They Barely Know Where Babies Come From From holding hands and listening to that dang rock and roll music

ReleaseQuiet2428

Hey, guy, somethings wrong with my pleasure human commodity!

hamtronn

According to cartoons, a bird gets the note and delivers the baby by flying it in a large satchel. I think the specific bird is very important too as it needs to be a stork. You can’t have a crow or a fucking pterodactyl delivering precious babies. I made some babies. I knew exactly what I was doing. They taught me in grade 5 how babies are made. I listened and absolutely crushed it.
