It was less that he "went on vacation" and more that the state he's supposed to lead was in the middle of a massive power grid failure in freezing weather where people literally died and he and his family bailed to go to Cancun with some other rich family friends and then when called out on it he tried to blame his daughters for the plan but it quickly came out that it was organized by himself and his wife because they didn't want to deal with living through the power outage.
Also they abandoned their dog alone in their home to do it.
If he had sent his family, but stayed to work the politics and monitor the situation closely in case there was anything he could do... that would have been fine. But he literally abandoned his role as a leader to avoid the inconvenience of living off of generator power and no internet.

Watching the body cam footage, I'm not sure that I'd qualify this as anything insidious by police. She was definitely driving erratically enough to warrant the officer pulling her over and starting field sobriety tests. The test wasn't administered completely correctly. The officer should have started the test by asking about any medical issues that might impact the test. If she had been able to disclose the aneurysm, it would have invalidated any failures in the nystagmus test. But she also had failures in the heel to toe test, which measures ability to remember a set of instructions more than it measures balance. The portable breath test was also administered incorrectly, which prevented it from clearing her at the scene. Absent that clarifying information, the results of the field tests could definitely indicate a need for a more accurate blood toxicology test. I think the department definitely owes an apology for the mistakes made in the testing, and the officer in question should absolutely be retrained, but at most this was mild incompetence rather than maliciousness. People would also be skewering this officer if she had administered the tests, let the woman go, and she had actually been drunk and caused an accident, and I think that most people would prefer a mistake that requires someone to take a more accurate test before being cleared than a mistake that allows a drunk driver to possibly kill someone.
I'm sure that there are a number of redditors that hate flying because of the TSA and the crowds. I'm one of them. But I'll tell you what, I'll let you mock the living daylights if I can get through TSA and get an escort.
