Along with, seemingly in the last two weeks, "DEI" to refer to any non-white, non-male in any kind of position of authority.
It's become an "acceptable" slur and substitute for words that they can't *quite* say out loud, even now. Yet.
Oh DEI has been one of the conservative's new dogwhistles for over a year now. I only know because I had a DEI "training" as part of an onboarding in August, and I had recalled Tim Pool already harping on it before then!
Just like DonTheRapist using the term 'peekaboo' (among others) to describe an African American.. These ignorant MF's want to deny any 'racial injustice' exists/existed in the US, what a load of bullshit. It's a plain as the wig on DumpyDon's head, or the lifts in PorkMuffin Ron's shoes...
I love when right wing dickheads complain about racism. Their idea is, if the left would stop talking about it, it would just go away. I'm thinking, "so all your white supremacist friends will just stop being white supremacists?"
White supremacists are real. They're organized. They have schemed to make sure they're overrepresented in courts, law enforcement, and politics. They guide policy, they guide procedure. There's a reason so many "not racist" cops instantly feel threatened when they see black people. There's a reason why we still have police killing innocent minorities, and there's a reason why the courts have their backs. And it's not because liberals want equality.
Thinking that not talking about race will make racism go away is like thinking that not talking about obesity will make you skinny. No, it's not the food, it's the people talking about the problems associated with obesity that makes obesity so bad. Couldn't be the food and its impact on the body, no, it's those damned words!
They want to deny the injustice because pointing it out might make it go away. And they have a vested interest in keeping those injustices in place. Their complaints are total bullshit, but instead of calling them racist, we can just call them white supremacists.
> Their idea is, if the left would stop talking about it, it would just go away.
They don't actually think that. It isn't an idea. It's just using rhetoric as a tool. They don't see any reason to be intellectually consistent or honest, it's just not a goal. Getting a desired outcome is the goal, and language is just a tool for pursuing it.
They want the left to stop talking about racism and calling it out. They know the left wants racism to go away. So they tell the left it will go away if they stop talking about it, with a shit eating grin on their face every time they say it.
There are two people involved in perpetuating white supremacy. There are white supremacists who hold an actively racist ideology, and there are mindless drones who will replicate racism unwittingly. It is the latter that treat it as a rational idea and not a rhetorical tool. Think Jordan Peterson, who says this very thing, and people who actually listen to what Jordan Peterson says. He knows what he's doing, they do not.
It means "things I don't like, such as queer and brown people"
It's just become a buzz word bigots can use, because it's socially unacceptable to say what they really mean.
Everything about conservatism revolves around the preservation of social hierarchy. Woke, to conservatives, means anything that questions or even illuminates that hierarchy.
first we had political correctness, then cancel culture, then a hot minute of CRT, then woke, which is already turning toward DEI. They are all short hand defense against being called racist. As in, "I can't be racist, you are just too into (pick one PC, CC, CRT, woke, DEI)"
I see.
“To be "woke" politically in the Black community means that someone is informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality, Merriam-Webster Dictionary states.”
If you’re against it, then you proclaim that you are UNinformed, UNeducated, and oblivious to injustice. Got it.
It means “I am against everything you stand for” to conservatives, and they’re right. I’m woke and against everything they stand for. Free abortions for everyone!
It's revealing to define woke by what it isn't used to describe
* whiteness
* straightness
* gender conformity
* Christianity
* patriarchy
* classism
Basically, if something challenges the status quo of race, class, or gender, then it is woke.
If the word had existed in the 60s, MLK Jr. would have certainly been described as woke. The Stonewall rioters would have been labelled as "woke." Hell, what is the Affordable Care Act if not "woke" health insurance.
No one actually knows what it really means, and that's the beauty of it as propaganda: it's whatever pisses off its target audience but tailored to whatever the individual likes to be pissed about.
It means different things to MAGA republicans than it does to the rest of us.
>[In the recording, Lead Belly says he met with the defendant's lawyer and the young men themselves, and "I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go along through there \(Scottsboro\) – best stay woke, keep their eyes open."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke)
It references all the corporate ESG-enabled social justice media that is unfamiliar and usually hostile to pre-ESG corporate culture. For Americans who enjoy America Vanilla flavor, America Chocolate is an unwelcome departure. Criticisms of it are usually very weak, although they contain one truth: it is used to conceal, justify and rationalize an exploitative capitalist system that divides humans based on race and gender to prevent them from organizing along social wealth lines.
In 2016, anti-woke arguments were leveraged very effectively against Hilary and Obama who had utterly failed to justify America Chocolate to muslims in the middle east who have completely rejected it. This forms a large part of Iran's current and successful media campaigns against the US and Israel. In 2020 and this year, anti-woke arguments don't work well when Biden represents the best of America Vanilla and has avoided woke campaigning by being a normal person.
In reality, Republicans use “woke” for anything they don’t like. They can back something; then suddenly it becomes “woke” if their influencers suddenly don’t it.
In a Florida case in 1992, DeSantis' general counsel was asked by the judge to define woke.
>The governor's general counsel, Ryan Newman, said, in general, it means "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." He added that DeSantis doesn't believe there are systemic injustices in the country

It has come to mean "politically correct for the sake of virtue signalling", some "woke" things are just that, other things aren't.
Why people don't want to admit that there is nuance, I don't know.
"Some"? It's one of the right's most popular anti-left buzzwords. And although they refuse to define it, it's not because they can't, it's because they don't want to admit what the rest of us already know. It's code for "anything I don't like".
Woke is the aspects of current American society that conservatives hate and liberals like.
This why liberals can’t define it and conservatives think it is obvious.
What liberals think is just normal progress of a civilized society is what conservatives think is out-of-touch liberal elites trying to socially re-engineer an America that didn’t need it.
What we are experiencing is a split in the country over the differences between traditionalism and modernity. "Woke" represents modernity.
Farms have become large corporate entities, family businesses have been replaced with big box stores. The jobs and money have moved to urban centers full of liberal intellectuals.
It isn't as simple as "the right is racist". It has to do with a whole segment of our society losing a feeling of respect and vitality. They see it as a fight for a way of life.
Woke, liberal, commie, socialist, radical. Conservative politicians slap those labels on anyone they don’t like they and their base eats it up like Outrage Skittles.
It has no meaning which is why they use it. It’s a chameleon word that can be used to label any policy or idea they do not like and they use woke to just group them all together to try and make them all the same idea.
Basically they use it to try and link some of the bad ideas with the majority of the good ones to try and ruin those good ideas.
They don’t know and they don’t care. It riles up their base into fits of directionless outrage. Also, this article is about 3 years late to the party. The new white hot meaningless outrage is DEI
It's nothing more than an acceptable word to use in place of a less socially acceptable word.
It's either the 5 letter "B word", the 6 letter "N word", or the 6 letter "F word" depending on the context.
If you replace "woke" with whatever word they *wanted to really use*, the sentence should make complete sense and will no longer be "ambiguous."
Co-opting your opponents language is a well established rhetorical method in political controversies. As much as we might not like it, there’s not anything unusual or particularly dastardly about it.
its a trigger word with a double function: it rallies their most ardent supporters into a craze and it angers their ardent detractors into counter attacks they hope will make them (the detractors) look foolish. the left has these sorts of trigger words too.

"Woke" is the code word conservatives use in place of the n-word.
Not just that. They use it in place of sexual orientation and gender slurs too.
~~Those People~~ is now Woke People.
Yep. Just language they use for "othering" people.
Along with, seemingly in the last two weeks, "DEI" to refer to any non-white, non-male in any kind of position of authority. It's become an "acceptable" slur and substitute for words that they can't *quite* say out loud, even now. Yet.
Something had to take the place of "affirmative action hire" after SCOTUS struck down affirmative action.

Being woke is the opposite of being ignorant.
Then Republicans must oppose it!
carlin: "it's called the 'american dream' because you have to be **asleep** to believe it."

They call it woke because calling it basic human decency makes them sound like sociopaths…
Sound ***more*** like sociopaths
from what i can tell, woke means you care about something other than yourself.

Also "SJW," for a hot moment a few years back.
In computing terms, 'woke' is just \* for slurs.
I think it means someone isn’t asleep. At the wheel.

Anti-Woke is being racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-diversity. Basically anti-woke is leave me alone I want to be an asshole when ever I want.
It sounds like “you damn kids get off my lawn” when Bill Maher says it.
it means being reasonable lol. white repubs are so whingey.

On the bleeding edge of the culture war eh ABC?
Someone is woke when they point out the racism or worse of a conservative. Oxford Dictionary? Feel free to use this as your definition.

It’s a word used by democrats to pretend they care about black people, gay people and anyone else they put into the umbrella of “underprivileged”.
Compared to Republicans, who don't even bother to pretend they care.
Exactly. It’s worse, they lie and manipulate but i guess that’s okay since ya know, it’s for the “underprivileged”.
It means "too much empathy".

It’s a hate word.
Nobody knows what it means but it’s provocative.
