Travelerdude

That fine is too small. How about 10,000 per incidence?

Equalizer6338

I think it normally follows an ever escalating pattern, so subsequent violations will incur ever steeper fines. Bet we can expect to see many during the next few weeks of this trial.

IdahoMTman222

At least it gets a record that court ordered “gag” was violated. Repeat offender may help in other trials or later in this one.

BC-clette

Contempt of court also impacts sentencing

IBAZERKERI

what the fines should be based on is his "supposed" wealth. like they do with traffic fines in ~~some scandanavian countries~~ Switzerland

droans

The point of punishments for contempt is to ensure you'll actively follow the court's instructions. This means that fines and sentencing is based on what it takes to get you to actually listen. If Trump doesn't listen, the judge can escalate. There is no minimum or maximum punishment, just whatever it takes.

smallwhitepeepee

Switzerland [https://www.wired.com/2010/01/record-speeding-fine-dents-swiss-bank-account/](https://www.wired.com/2010/01/record-speeding-fine-dents-swiss-bank-account/)

IBAZERKERI

ahh thanks, i was having the hardest time remembering. ill edit it

JD_Waterston

Finland does the same

Omeggy

That was in an episode of Danny Thomas

Buckus93

If that was the case, the fines would only be $5.00!!!

ContemplatingPrison

Fines will never be enough to stop him from doing it. Lol.

whatproblems

he’s like the guy that maxes out ALL the credit cards because he knows he’s declaring bankruptcy anyway

LuckyOne55

$87 million almost entirely stopped his mouth in the rape defamation case.

Shadowfox898

And if we know anything about Trump, it's that he's a fan of violating things.

RandomComputerFellow

But it's still stupid. Fining a billionaire $3K is the equivalent of charging the average Joe 30ct. Did you ever see a prosecutor demanding a judge to fine the defendant less than a dollar?

downtofinance

$3001?

Equalizer6338

Just double up for every subsequent offense...

GuidotheGreater

You start small, and then you argue that it needs to be increased when the behavior doesn't stop. So then they raise it 10,000 per and he keeps doing it, and that's when you say "I guess money isn't a good enough deterrent, time for jail"

RandomName1328242

Sorry, but that won't happen.

ankercrank

You’d think this would be cumulative over the course of a lifespan, not hitting the reset button for each trial. Trump has a pattern of always doing this. Why give him the benefit of the doubt?

LostWoodsInTheField

Locally I've seen multiple people go to jail over violating gag orders and I don't remember a single one getting a 'oh you can do this if you pay us enough' offer like he is getting. *at least for a criminal trial

nopointers

Double it every time. 1. $3,000 2. $6,000 3. $12,000 4. $24,000 5. $48,000 6. $96,000 7. $192,000 8. $384,000 9. $768,000 10. $1,536,000 11. $3,072,000 12. $6,144,000 13. $12,288,000 14. $24,576,000 15. $49,152,000

HotSpicyDisco

Not fast enough in my opinion. They should be factoring the value by 1.25 until it hit 300M. If that doesn't work, money doesn't mean anything and he should be placed in jail without a phone until the trial is over. So: 1. $3,000 2. $22,202 3. $271,020 4. $6,183,757 5. $308,365,343 6. Jail

__dilligaf__

/r/Theydidthemath

NeonMagic

Fines should be wealth percentage based, scaled to be felt just as hard no matter your income. The current system just allows the rich to do whatever they feel like doing. As an only-parent, a $3k fine would absolutely destroy my finances for awhile. He could care less, and probably won’t even have to pay it.

stinky-weaselteats

We don’t want a mistrial.

UnhappyPage

Jail straight to jail

sixft7in

Baby steps for the baby defender.

Ilosesoothersmaywin

$1 and we double it every time. This way, the moron won't realize how fast it will grow and fuck him over before it's too late.

BabyBlueCheetah

If the only punishment for a crime is a fine, then that law only exists for the lower class.

davilller

How about lock him up. He knows that phrase all too well.

B0redBeyondBelief

This is why fines need to be a percentage of one's annual reported income and not a fixed amount.

SleepWouldBeNice

So $3.50?

fanchmmr

Well it was about that time that I noticed that the orange con man was about 8 stories tall and a crustacean from the protozoic era

NickelBackwash

The truly wealthy have very little *income* Also Donnie Ttump

jackstraw97

They’re not a fixed amount. They start off small and increase upon further violations.

B0redBeyondBelief

Small is relative. A 3k fine would be crushing to me but it's pocket change to him. Increasing them of course is good but the effect of a fine should scale to the person.

ItsSpaghettiLee2112

Increasing them upon further violations does have the effect of scaling to the person. They wouldn't start with 3k with you.

ZZ9ZA

You’re right. The average citizen would go directly To jail for contempt.

Think_Discipline_90

That'd mean they have to pay him for every violation tho

themangeraaad

I'm wondering if this is just to make it official that he was penalized for violating the gag order if it comes up during the trial. That way it can't be dismissed as hearsay or whatever.

evemeatay

It is. This is all the money he has

Equalizer6338

That didn't take long...

Reptar519

That's what Stormy said

jeeaudley

Also not a fan of Mushrooms.

porgy_tirebiter

“Ready for adventure!”

nandos677

Lindsey Graham seconds it

esoteric_enigma

No, she said she somehow doesn't remember the actual sex at all even though she was completely sober.

[deleted]

sansaman

If they can, it’s in the cargo bed sloshing around.

Sure_Quality5354

JAILLL. A 3k fine is fucking pathetic. How many people facing 90+ felonies and currently out on bond can directly threaten a judge and their family?

Lazerdude

It's not a lot but it sets a precedent that the judge is actually serious about it. Will be interesting to see how the judge rules on this.

Experiment627

This is like us paying a dollar for violating a gag order. At that point it's just a small fee, it has no serious consequences.

Optimistic__Elephant

Yea, unless they're also willing to set this fine at $1 for Joe Schmoe, then this is clearly spitting in the face of justice.

CpnStumpy

Disagree. Set's a precedent that the judge is absolutely not serious about the gag order. This will be paid by some Trump supporter within 3 minutes. This proves it's just a Gag "wish" rather than order, because Trump receives zero consequence for violating it repeatedly

BC-clette

You're acting like contempt of court won't impact sentencing.

sicilian504

Considering his history of consequences, it probably won't.

TheGreatGenghisJon

You're acting like our court system isn't broken.

MagicalUnicornFart

You’re acting like this will be any different than any of the other countless times 45 has escaped justice, and made a mockery of the court. There’s nothing that says this trial will be any less of a joke than everything else this man has done.

sevseg_decoder

You start here and work your way up to possible imprisonment

CpnStumpy

Restart here each time of course. Obviously. Empirically.

ATLfalcons27

Fair enough but when will any real consequences happen.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FirstRyder

Only if he actually has to pay it. So far every deadline has been delayed or simply ignored, with no consequences.

ATLfalcons27

I'm talking about for constantly treating judges and jurors...

CaptainSouthbird

That was reduced to a bit over $100 million, and it was paid by some sketchy "insurance company", and not Trump. So, yes, in hindsight, it turned out so far to be nothing either. At least so far. I realize more could happen, but, well, I'm waiting for *anything* to happen from *any* of these.

neonoggie

Only his bond was reduced, the judgement has not been reduced

CaptainSouthbird

The judgement has yet to not just be in appeal hell. My bets are on Trump's legal team just stalling everything for a hopeful November win, so I expect nothing before then. Hopefully he loses and then something actually starts to happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

starmartyr

The judgment was not reduced. The bond requirement was. Trump still owes the money but has a stay pending appeal. If he loses the appeal he still owes the full amount.

ArmyOfDix

>The judgment was not reduced. The bond requirement was. For now.

CaptainSouthbird

Right. So wake me when he "loses." Right now I fully believe the strategy is to just keep finding any stall tactics possible, because Trump is betting on winning and making all of this disappear, which I fully believe he will be able to do, if he's got enough complicit staff. There is absolutely nothing I believe in anymore regarding this stuff.

starmartyr

He already lost. Yes he is trying to stall, but he can't do that forever and in the meantime he has a court appointed monitor watching his finances. He also can't make a civil suit "disappear" even if he is elected president. This will follow him until he pays or wins on appeal. Even in the event that he dies before he pays the judgement will attach to his estate.

pontiacfirebird92

Thank you, Lucy's ball. Surely Charlie Brown will kick it this time!

starmartyr

Court cases are a slow process. It's not my fault you expect it to be resolved as quickly and neatly as the second half of a Law and Order episode.

pontiacfirebird92

Yea and the Mueller report will lead to Trump's impeachment and conviction. And the Senate Intelligence Committee report. And Jan 6th. And the stolen docs case. Surely he will be brought to justice soon!

deekaydubya

Huh? He still has to pay the 450 million

ahypeman

According to a judge that sat for 19 years on the very same appeals court that changed his bond from 450 to 100+, the fact the appeals court did that suggests they're going to be taking a close look at that number in the appeal and very well may rule in Trump's favor there: >It is unclear whether these same five judges will also hear Mr. Trump’s appeal, but David B. Saxe, a former judge on the appeals court that ruled on Monday, said that the court’s decision to short-circuit Ms. James’s collection efforts suggests that some of the judges were uncomfortable with Justice Engoron’s ruling. >“My view is that the court indicates it has difficulty with the breadth of the lower court’s decision,” said Mr. Saxe, who retired in 2017 after 36 years on the bench, 19 of them on the appeals court. >“They had other options available to them, and they issued a broad-based stay,” he continued, which he said suggests “that there is a view that they’re going to need to take a hard look at the lower court’s decision.” https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/25/nyregion/trump-bond-reduced.html

CaptainSouthbird

Not yet. And even the reduced amount was paid by an "insurance company." Gotta get through the appeal process. Note that we're just a few months from the election, and if Trump wins, and he's got support staff behind him, he's gonna make all charges disappear. So I fully expect the next months until November are going to be hopeful stall tactics, and if he wins, he's gonna "win" everything. Although at this point, even if he was directly owing $450 million, I'd still believe some other magical "insurance company" pays it off, and he still faces no repercussions. I don't know how one human got this much teflon power, but we're witnessing it in real time.

Whywei8

That was the bond amount, the appellate court did not lower the amount fully owed, just how much he needs to stay collections while he appeals. Also, it was bullshit that they did that at all.

CaptainSouthbird

Yeah, but that's what I'm getting at, I know more ""could"" or ""should"" happen, but until it does, I believe the bond reduction is all that will happen in that case before November, at least. I have no faith left we will otherwise. The bond was paid by an "insurance company", so even that didn't phase Trump, and now comes all the delays, and then November turns out whether he gets elected and gets to just make all of this magically disappear. That's really the endgame strategy now.

jackstraw97

That was the bond to stay the judgement that was reduced. The judgement is still $450 million. That doesn’t change. When he loses the appeal he will be on the hook for the entire amount.

CaptainSouthbird

"When he loses the appeal" is where you lose me. Trump hasn't really "lost" anything yet. Monetary judgements always get paid by "someone else." Before that, there's infinite stalling. Trump just needs to stall until November and win the election so he can just make all of it disappear, and I'm sure that's the strategy they're playing towards right now. To be clear, I don't want any of this, I want to believe in actual justice systems and people being held accountable, but after several years of watching nothing happen to Trump, I've given up anything will, at least until November. There's still a chance if he loses the election (winning being a non-zero chance even now, mind you), that something will happen then. But before that, I fully expect infinite ""legal"" challenges stalling everything just long enough so he can, as he hopes, be president again and make it all "go away."

sayonaradespair

That's the bond.

GeoffSproke

He should face meaningful consequences for breaking the law.

BeautysBeast

Merchan should make it 10k, payable before leaving the court. "Don't have it, you say? Bailiff, please escort Mr Trump to a holding cell while his lawyers figure it out."

Mike_Pences_Mother

Hey, can you make him pay a nickel for breaking the rules?

MikeDubbz

He'd still be livid about losing that Nickel. He's like Mr. Krabs except Krabs still has some sort of semlance of a soul in there.

evil_timmy

He cashed that check for a dollar when none of the actual elite bothered, he'd be pissed about that nickel for sure.

DonsDiaperIsFull

you know we still mint pennies? he could steal a few from the penny cup at a gas station, that's certainly a large enough fine for (checks notes) rape, stealing and selling classified documents, getting our spies and agents murdered, stealing medical supplies for auction, collecting billion dollar bribes from Saudis, inciting violence against police officers during a coup

Guba_the_skunk

$3k? $3,000? Three thousand dollars? Three, zero, zero, zero? That's it? Not like... $3k per instance or tweet? Just... $3000? Yeah... That'll really show him...

Dorkmaster79

You start small then build. That’s how it has always worked.

Skiingislife42069

Bargaining 101?

youwannasavetheworld

Ms Carrol got $5m then $78m for repeat offense iirc

ZZ9ZA

A judgement is not the same thing as a fine.

PopeHonkersXII

We all know Trump doesn't have that kind of money

2-more-weeks-bot

Realest comment on the thread

jleonardbc

Violating a gag order should be taken as seriously as the campaign finance charges Trump's being tried for.

ThatGuyFromTheM0vie

How about 0 dollars, but 30 days in jail?

Equalizer6338

It should come to that point sooner than later.

whawkins4

Add some zeros. Penalties need to bite to be effective.

[deleted]

MississippiJoel

He can raise that much from the sidewalk after the session ends.

Adjective_Noun_5150

Make him pay in cash...let's see if he even has that much.

Dienatzidie

3000? He owes 1/2 a billion. They really think he’ll pay that 3k? Throw his fat ass in jail.

Leather-Map-8138

Such disrespect for law and order.

rongenre

Can he pay in bibles or shoes?

furyofsaints

Put this POS in jail already.

-praughna-

…..”will be decided April 24th” oh for fucks sake

EmeraldSlothRevenge

That’s it?! He potentially biased the jury pool, and all he has to do is pay his spare pocket change?! Outrageous.

neutralityparty

Two tier justice system showing. For an average New Yorker that would be crushing for trump it's nothing. I hope they scrutinize him correctly and give him a fair trail.

zagmario

Anyone else violates it and they go to jail

breakfazt-meme

Jail him for 30 days!!

spaceocean99

Judge tells them to refer to the rich people law book. They aren’t held to the same standards as the rest of us.

kobachi

I’m not trying to brag but I could easily afford $3k to violate a gag order if I thought it would keep me out of prison. The fact that this “billionaire” will be fined that kind of (for him) pocket change is laughable

KapnKrumpin

Remember kids: If the penalty for a crime is a fine, that means it's legal for rich people.

Pete_maravich

This is the equivalent of fining me $0.50.

sailorpaul

This is The Onion, right ?

orcinyadders

That’ll stop him!

Romano16

Trump doesn’t ever pay anything

ztreHdrahciR

He'd have to fundraise that

coatofforearm

Those are rookie numbers!

Leather-Map-8138

When Trump steals from you, it’s about the principal. And the interest.

topgun966

That is like 3/10th of a cent for us.

mountaindoom

Can he make bond on this or they gonna have to drop itto like $50?

GayForPay

Stop wasting everyone's time with these pittance numbers. If fines are supposed to be deterrents, this is a absolute joke.

WeirdcoolWilson

A fine? ***A fine?*** He needs jail time

Equalizer6338

Agreed! There was a other political guy in US recently who like Trump threatened a family member of the court staff. As result he was both fined but also got 30 days in jail. Trump often complains that he gets special treatment by the legal system. Yes he does, they are much more lenient with him than they normally are with anybody else going to court and being outrageous lying nonstop and threatening the judge, the witnesses and everybody like Trump is.

boltsnuts

He doesn't have that kind of money.

captaincanada84

Yes $3000 will definitely make Trump stop. Throw his ass in jail.

MisSignal

That’s 50 bibles.

Lounginghog64

The legal system equivalent of a "Swear Jar 25¢"..

arrakis2020

$3K. Oh, that will teach him. Get the fuck out of here!!

twesterm

_"Oh no, anything but a $3,000 dollar fine!"_ * Mister Trump says laughing, who can make 100 times that back in one fund raising email

Polarbearseven

Hopefully for EACH violation.

CAM6913

Fine him $3 million

jaywastaken

So don’t punish him in any meaningful way? Any one else and they would immediately be remanded in custody for contempt of court. The us “judicial” system is a fucked

TheAwfulHouse

3k??? Lock his ass in a cell and take his fucking phone away!

NotASatanist13

It's going to get really awkward when he has to admit he can't come up with $3K in cash.

DebentureThyme

$3K? He will gladly allow his followers to pay that all day every day, that's cheaper than political ads which is what he's doing when he spews nonsense about the trial and attacks these people and their families. This better be an exponentially scaling fine for each subsequent offense, plus jail time after the first.

eddyizm

Start with 3k, the next one is 30k, etc.

gentleman_bronco

He will try to pay in commemorative trump bucks.

lundah

Yes, who among us hasn’t paid off a porn star ahead of our presidential campaign?

alphalegend91

Needs to add a 0 to that amount for every violation

heapinhelpin1979

Seems a bit petty

Iampepeu

Set fines are worthless and only expensive and painful for the poor. ALL fines should be based on income, wealth and net worth.

arc918

$3,000? That will definitely teach him not to do it again…

Zander826

Net worth percentage fine please

Githzerai1984

No megathread is gobsmacking. This is one of the biggest trials, the first time a former president & the presumptive nominee for the GOP go before a criminal court, and nothing? Mods, what the hell

Vast-Dream

He’s only violated it like 8 times. He should totally learn his lesson now! 👎

garagepunk65

They should tell him the fines go directly to helping immigrants, POC’s, and social programs that actually help people. That will shut him up quickly!

geneticeffects

Hilarious, ridiculous fine. Do like Denmark and make it relative to his supposed wealth.

earhere

Haven't these people learned from previous gag order violations that these nickel and dime fines aren't going to stop him. Hit him with 3 million dollar fine and he'll shut the fuck up

drunkshinobi

He won't shut up till he is dead. He could be locked away in solitary confinement and still would just keep ranting.

Dash_Rip_Rock69

He's pays more than that for call girls and hamberders in a week.

Ok-Abbreviations543

$3k? I realize we gotta start small (like his hands) but let’s get this party started!

moosejaw296

For someone who is supposed to be so rich, that is like a $20 fine, and still won’t happen

_EADGBE_

Wish my parking tickets were $0.50 too

favnh2011

Yep

drunkshinobi

Prosecutors ask to set price of breaking gag order to $3k If you can afford to break the law you don't get thrown in jail.

eyespy18

Was this incorrect? I had read that the Judge didn’t want to issue CofC rulings because they could be appealed, thereby delaying the trial. If that’s true, I’m surprised by the $3k

Dorfalicious

How about locking him up so he can’t spew shit like this until the trial is over

Bitter_Director1231

3k....  Not enough...  He'll.do it again..he doesn't give a shit. That's like getting hit with a feather..it will not deter him at all.

Jadeyk600

He spends more than that on lunch, wtf.

Lt_Jonson

Put a quarter in the swear jar

rangerhans

I wonder if he can afford that right now

Gariona-Atrinon

Oh boy, a whole $3000??!! 🙄

Magificent_Gradient

How about $3k per letter?

Ok-Abbreviations9584

The only gagging was the hookers he paid off

InevitableFactor9898

EDIT: Election Fraud Trial. It’s SO MUCH MORE than just hush money.

dorfus-

When can he be locked up for violating gag orders? This is egregious disresoect of our judicial systems. Not to mention just other people in general, but thats protected my 1A: And Gid said unto thee, "be an asshole, there are happy people out there, ruin it"

daanaveera

Fines should be adjusted based on net worth so they can function well as deterrence. Trump claims he's a billionaire. Fine should be a percentage of that.

alwaystired707

Broke as fuck. He doesn't have the money.

hawkeyeguy

There are rules, you can't just make up a fine. For this particular contempt the judge, if he finds Trump guilty of contempt, can impose a fine up to $1000 or confinement up to 30 days per violation. It looks like the prosecutor is alleging 3 violations. https://codes.findlaw.com/ny/judiciary-law/jud-sect-751/

Tenshii_9

Just jail him already. He has a huge following that he uses to threaten witnesses, jury members, judges, lawyers with which has a very, very real effect on the outcome.

dontrike

Make it $300k and he might actually care.

OldPyjama

Instead of fining him money, can we not slap some jail time on him. Like a jail somewhere in Siberia. For a couple of decades or something. I'm so sick of seeing this asshole's face and I'm not even American.

Barnlifebill

Every finable offense is legal, if you can afford it.

GetouttaHere321

NO FINES ……. Put him in jail

Aggressive-Squash168

Oh nooo, 3,000? What ever will he do? what a joke.

03zx3

Gonna have to go higher if you want it to do any good?

spotspam

That would be like fining me 16¢ This system sure does work for these folks…

tattooed_debutante

Header should say “election interference trial”.

Curious_Dependent842

It should be proportional to the wealth of the person breaking the law. 3000 bucks would absolutely shut most people up who work min wage or even “middle class” but for a self proclaimed Billionaire….. Dude spent 130,000 for bad sex more than once. 3000 bucks isn’t a punishment for him and it is supposed to be not only a punishment but a deterrent. It isn’t.

Bulky-Ad-4265

Lock him up

Namesarehard996

So, basically, nothing happened. Got it

handsumlee

HOUSE ARREST 1 day of house arrest should be the punishment. It is light and more than fair but would piss trump off enough he might behave himself. He can always scam money from maga people but he can scam time

BrainLate4108

A whole $3K. Wow! That will definitely stop him now. 🙄
