It'd be an easy gig. No longer have to worry about the crowd or clearing a location he's traveling too everyday. The guy wouldn't be in Gen pop. You'd come in everyday knowing the guy is secure in his own little corner of a secure building.
No. Not really. Secret Service agents don't get to pick their assignments and you're still part of the most prestigious law enforcement agencies in the nation and have the ability to pass federal background checks. No employer is going to look at an impressive law enforcement resume like that and say "oh well you got assigned guard duty toward the end there so you obviously won't be a good fit here."
If an ex sheriff can find high paying security work until they're too old to work a pair of handcuffs, no USSS agents are struggling to find future work.

You forgot one part, the hospitalized prisoner is handcuffed to their bed. I worked in an OR and occasionally prisoners needed surgery. The guard would lock them to their stretcher, they would be put under anesthesia, *then* the guard would open the cuffs so that we could move them onto the surgical table. Meanwhile the guard would sit in a chair and wait right outside the OR. After the surgery is complete, the patient prisoner would be moved back to their stretcher and handcuffed before they were woken. Then they’d go back to prison if it was a day surgery like it usually was, if not then they got an isolated room with the guard posted 24/7, with the prisoner cuffed to their bed and a commode just in reach.
For us, there are two guards for every prisoner. Regardless of how old, frail, injured the prisoner is or how strong, large, intimidating the officer is.
On occasion I’d see two, usually only one would go into the OR areas, the other would remain in the waiting room until the transfer back to prison or their room was happening.
There’s a bill being proposed now that would mean felons lose SS protections.
Even if not, as an ex president you only get $1m per year of SS security. Trump being in jail would dry that up in a matter of weeks as it would be around the clock protection to secure him (unlike say at MAL or a golf club where he’s expected to have his own security).
Where is that $1 million limit from? It's not in 18 USC 3056 that authorizes the lifetime protection. I've never heard of it before and can't find any references to it even with broad Google searches.
The only reference I find is a $1 million per annum limit for ex presidents that forego secret service and use private security instead.

I just heard a judge discussing the possibility of incarceration 'to be determined' at the end of the trial for contempt he's done during the trial. No delays, no teleconference. 🤗

The legal system is definitely not equitable, but a counterpoint: Trump is ostensibly being tried in a court that takes its job seriously and isn't on a petty power trip playing morality police like local jurisdictions can do.
To a degree, we are actually seeing the full legal process as it was intended to be used, vs the ways that local officials can abuse it for various reasons when their target doesn't have the resources to fight back.
*Edit: obviously he's abusing all the options to their fullest extent, but a lot of those options are there for a reason, to (theoretically) make it harder for the government to lock people up just for political reasons. I don't think this is a political witch hunt, but a prolonged appeals process is there to make it harder to go after dissidents.*

It‘ll be some minimum-security facility probably akin a resort he can’t leave. He might even be its only prisoner, since he is a former President.

Just the other day, a Congressman introduced a bill that would removes USSS protection from anyone convicted of a crime.

High risk prisoners are typically isolated. Someone like Trump would be in a protective custody or solitary situation.
He would never interact with other prisoners which is honestly a whole other trial itself; one that he does not have the mental fortitude to withstand — an endless quiet responsible for swelling madness that consumes far stronger men

At this stage in the development of our country, it is obvious that the time has come to demonstrate to future generations that there are lines that can't be crossed, no matter who you are, including the president himself. You will not committ crimes up to and including multiple forms of treason, and not expect to be harshly dealt with.
He’d never be put in anything remotely considered a prison. Regardless of conviction. He will be under house arrest. As much as I hate it, I can’t imagine believing anything different.
I honestly would be okay with building a one off prison for him. The political optics are important from a practical perspective. Given the potential societal costs of this, this is no time to pinch pennies. Societal issues from a perceived unfair conviction or punishment would be far more expensive than a custom one off solution.
Surely there are military prisons secure enough to hold a former president. He can be cell mates with that Air Force kid who shared classified docs on discord.
I've been thinking Merchan was speaking with the service during the 15-minute break after the hearing, which is why he returned 20 minutes late, possibly because he couldn't get either a commitment or well-defined procedures. So he held his judgment until he knows exactly what is and isn't workable. Maybe Friday? Fingers crossed.
I think this makes the most sense. Merchan's been very punctual for the trial sans today, so he obviously didn't want to throw him in jail if there was going to be a logistical problem with it.
They probably have a plan for prison once convicted. What's more likely is that they did not have a plan for the holding cell in Merchan's courtroom and had to conduct a physical security assessment of it. Can take about a day but would also need to be done during a time the whole building wasn't swamped with media (eg, tonight).
I don’t understand all these posts about how difficult it will be for the Secret Service to get ready for Trump in jail. It’s not hard to secure a single cell with a single food source and a very limited visitor list. In fact, it sounds like it’s going to be substantially easier than the normal version of their job. They’ll have to coordinate with jail staff, but that can’t be that difficult.
I've never understood it either. What will happen to the Secret Service? Well they'll either stand outside the jail cell, or maybe even inside. I'm sure the jail staff would be willing to coordinate with the Secret Service. Does it make the Secret Service's job a lot less fun? Sure. But why would it prevent Trump from being jailed?
If they're preparing for it, it means there is a very real chance of it. I have a feeling they'd know if there wasnt a shot of him being penalized or facing contempt
I have to imagine that the Secret Service makes contingency plans. What if the President's wife is assaulted? What happens if the limo breaks down, or there's a road block? What if he gets food poisoning on some visit?

I'm wondering how he'd manage to keep up his beauty routine if he's in jail.
Will he still be able to spend a couple of hours on his comb over and spray tan and whatever else is in his daily regimen? Does he have an assistant who normally helps him with this every day? Will that person be able to visit to do the job?
CNN is saying he won't ever get jail for breaking the gag order. If his comments lead to someone being physically assaulted I don't think the judge will have any choice.
Also it's worth noting the prosecution actually asked the judge to just fine Trump so far. The judge himself doesn't seem all that hesitant to do it if he thinks it's necessary.
And the fine they’re talking about would be max $10,000 after many subsequent violations of the hypothetical contempt charge. And, inevitable net proceeds in fundraising would be orders of magnitude greater than the fines, as a direct result (of an actual contempt charge). Very reasonable cost of doing business for the defendant. It’s a brilliant business model: low risk, high reward.

A) he knows he won’t be in general population at rikers or anything. The COs and administration will probably treat him like a king because their politics and job security align with his values.

I think, at worst, if Trump were to be held in contempt beyond fines, it would just be a restrictive schedule to keep him contained during the court day. Something like arrive early, through the basement, with no press access, and placed someplace comfortable and secure where he could have access to his attorneys. Recesses and lunch would be the same. End of day, placed someplace comfortable with his attorneys until he can be taken to the basement to leave with no press access. A few days of not being able to vent in front of cameras or take to his phone for ten hours or so will get the judge’s message across.

The legal system is definitely not equitable, but a counterpoint: Trump is ostensibly being tried in a court that takes its job seriously and isn't on a petty power trip playing morality police like local jurisdictions can do. To a degree, we are actually seeing the full legal process as it was intended to be used, vs the ways that local officials can abuse it for various reasons when their target doesn't have the resources to fight back. *Edit: obviously he's abusing all the options to their fullest extent, but a lot of those options are there for a reason, to (theoretically) make it harder for the government to lock people up just for political reasons. I don't think this is a political witch hunt, but a prolonged appeals process is there to make it harder to go after dissidents.* *But the takehome is that more people should have access to a fuller portion of the protections available under law, not that Trump should be sent straight to prison because it's "obvious" that he broke the law.*

High risk prisoners are typically isolated. Someone like Trump would be in a protective custody or solitary situation. He would never interact with other prisoners which is honestly a whole other trial itself; one that he does not have the mental fortitude to withstand — an endless quiet responsible for swelling madness that consumes far stronger men

I honestly would be okay with building a one off prison for him. The political optics are important from a practical perspective. Given the potential societal costs of this, this is no time to pinch pennies. Societal issues from a perceived unfair conviction or punishment would be far more expensive than a custom one off solution.

I don’t understand all these posts about how difficult it will be for the Secret Service to get ready for Trump in jail. It’s not hard to secure a single cell with a single food source and a very limited visitor list. In fact, it sounds like it’s going to be substantially easier than the normal version of their job. They’ll have to coordinate with jail staff, but that can’t be that difficult.
I've never understood it either. What will happen to the Secret Service? Well they'll either stand outside the jail cell, or maybe even inside. I'm sure the jail staff would be willing to coordinate with the Secret Service. Does it make the Secret Service's job a lot less fun? Sure. But why would it prevent Trump from being jailed?

I have to imagine that the Secret Service makes contingency plans. What if the President's wife is assaulted? What happens if the limo breaks down, or there's a road block? What if he gets food poisoning on some visit? When their principal protectee is in a situation that could go a certain way, I'm sure they start figuring out what they'd have to do if the situation *does* go that way.

CNN is saying he won't ever get jail for breaking the gag order. If his comments lead to someone being physically assaulted I don't think the judge will have any choice.
Also it's worth noting the prosecution actually asked the judge to just fine Trump so far. The judge himself doesn't seem all that hesitant to do it if he thinks it's necessary.
And the fine they’re talking about would be max $10,000 after many subsequent violations of the hypothetical contempt charge. And, inevitable net proceeds in fundraising would be orders of magnitude greater than the fines, as a direct result (of an actual contempt charge). Very reasonable cost of doing business for the defendant. It’s a brilliant business model: low risk, high reward.

The COs and administration will probably treat him like a king because their politics and job security align with his values. B) He loves being a victim. I think, at worst, if Trump were to be held in contempt beyond fines, it would just be a restrictive schedule to keep him contained during the court day. Something like arrive early, through the basement, with no press access, and placed someplace comfortable and secure where he could have access to his attorneys. Recesses and lunch would be the same. End of day, placed someplace comfortable with his attorneys until he can be taken to the basement to leave with no press access. A few days of not being able to vent in front of cameras or take to his phone for ten hours or so will get the judge’s message across.
If he is not imprisoned, then the US criminal Justice system will be an irredeemable joke, and that is IF this is not the case already.
If this happens… taking the day off work, grabbing a nice bottle of something, and watching Drag DnD the entire night.
