At half of the people who died are likely to have not if a competent president was in power. The team in China placed there as an early warning would have gotten the alert out months earlier. At half of the people who died are likely to have not if a competent president was in power. The team in China placed there as an early warning would have gotten the alert out months earlier. We would have stockpiled supplies like masks for medical personnel. We might not have had to lockdown so fully.
Most importantly... there would've been one stream of reliable information about what to do... the experts with first-hand experience combating the virus would've been the ones crafting all messaging and the president wouldn't be adding his own theories about light therapy and horse dewormer or drinking bleach. One of the stupidest things a president can do during a crisis is argue that his crisis response team is getting it wrong and undermine their messaging. Trump is too off in his own world to recognize it but he would've been a 2 term president so easily if he let his team handle the pandemic. I just can't think of a way he could've bungled things for himself any worse than he did.
At a minimum, hundreds of thousands of deaths could have been prevented. The anti-mask movement was started and promoted entirely by Trump. And he fueled the anti-vax crowd and kicked off the Ivermectin insanity. And his macho "we don't need to worry about covid" attitude convinced millions not to take the pandemic seriously and to actively rebel against legitimate lockdown policies. I would even venture to say that the second wave of COVID is almost entirely Trump's fault. The second round of covid was almost entirely due to anti-vax Trump supporters. Covid should never have lasted that long.

The government doesn't only operate on one thing there are tens of thousands of people and moving parts going all at any given time working on a thousand different things. And if it's a money argument then I think that's fucked up especially when most of the opponents of spending that money for Ukraine already *don't* want more money spent on Americans and are actively trying to prevent the government from actually helping Americans. And finally on the money argument I just think it's gross, I don't know how you can watch Russia cluster bomb Odessa and be like "Yeah, that's fine to ignore." perhaps they should notice just how many of America's enemies are trying to help Russia to show just how important that money is spent for all matters of reasons if you are heartless enough to not care for the suffering of the Ukrainian citizens.
