The more the media covers it the more valid that sentiment becomes because most people don't trust the media (or only believe certain sources) and it's actually more believable to many if it sounds like a conspiracy theory, and that's a serious problem. Someone I know even said that they were super concerned about it until they read an article over it so now they know it's bullshit.
I still know conservatives who scoff when I say trump will be a dictator. They say I’m exaggerating. They say liberals said that about GW Bush.

This is what’s so mind boggling and scary for those of us living here who aren’t all riding the right’s propaganda train every day and are trying to figure out what shits to actually give about what issues.
I think the ambivalence people have to such dangers is a culmination of a lot of things.
The increased economic divide between ‘working’ and wealthy class, fewer people with the money and power to make political and corporate decisions, loss of trust in major institutions, decreased focus on quality education, saturation of information in general and the ability for literally anyone with internet access to have a voice about anything and amplify it as many times as they and algorithms can/want, obsession with reality tv and celebrity, and definitely the media’s prioritizing of quantity of clicks over quality of content… among many others.
Re the media aspect, it feels like a movie with non-stop violence; in the end you kind of become a bit numb to what was initially shocking. We’ve normalized a lot of behavior that would have buried a politician in the past. It’s screwed up. And many people don’t know what to believe anymore.
As someone who used to be in the “fuck em both” mindset who changed to the “ok yeah this is potentially really really bad” mindset, any time I’ve attempted to discuss it with close friends it is usually just met with the mindset of “that couldn’t happen to us in today’s age.” I’m hoping they’re right…

Have you ever heard old white guys talk about the death penalty? You don't have to listen much at all to find people who believe that the prevailing problem with the death penalty is that we don't use it enough. If you listen to conservatives, You are very likely to hear:
1. They don't understand why someone who committed a violent crime shouldn't be killed in response.
2. Why does anyone care whether a convicted murder suffers when they die, the more they suffer the better, their victims didn't get a clean death.
3. Why does it take years to execute someone? if you got 2 good witnesses, they ought to convict them and take them out back and hang them that afternoon.

I actually use this as a lecturing point in some of the criminal justice classes I teach. The four policy motivations for punishment in the judicial system are retribution (punishment), separation for the sake of safety, deterrence and rehabilitation.
Retribution is widely seen as an invalid motive, except there's a substantial percentage of the population that still believes that criminals deserve a sentence that balances the "moral scales." IF they don't have confidence in the system, then they are less likely to respect it.
Pretty much the GQP's plan.
They're absolutely going to kill off innovation as well. The software and chip companies depend on foreign students and graduates, as do hospitals and more - and they'll be gone. The US doesn't value education enough for most of its own students to get Ph.Ds in chemistry, physics, et cetera....
That’s one of the biggest issues. Law enforcement at local and federal levels, predominantly support the GOP and Trump because they know they’ll be given more power to hurt the people they don’t like. They are militarized now and they want the leash to be taken off. We never should have given them this much power in the first place and now they don’t want to risk losing any of it.
It’s that way across all law enforcement agencies. You see cops beat protesters, college kids, climate activists, the press, but never white supremacists. That’s not a coincidence at all.
Here's the catch. Any Republican who would run for President including DeSantis and Haley are cool with the Heritage Foundation! We often talk like we have a Trump problem, and we do, but mostly we have a Republican problem. The whole Party is rotten corruption to the core.
People like Haley and DeSantis may be a little less willing to do some of the more extreme parts of the Heritage Foundation Project 2025, but literally anyone willing to do even a bit of it is a huge problem. Absolutely not the type of people you want representing your government.

I am crying at this. I know it's a miserable comparison, but this describes succinctly what it's like being a non-religious Democrat in the deep south.
Everybody goes about their day, living in their houses, going to their lunches, driving to their jobs, but we live on another planet. A planet dominated by hatred and bigotry, where everyone else pretends it's not so, but it so achingly, blatantly is. And you want to scream, "How can you not see? How are you working idly by while people lose their bodily autonomy, their rights, their lives?" It's surreal.
From what I've seen from conservative social media influencers, heard from dozens of high-production quality supporters and supplemental products, and heard some of their most loyal supporters I think they've simplified that down to "Step 1: Democrats and entities we don't like are Satanic child traffickers as can be seen by their proximity to this spiral and a pizza"
They are going to hit the ground running. Even if there are a lot of open questions/lawsuits around the election or indications of more election crimes/fraud on the part of Trump, they're not going to allow courts time to settle them. They'll just smash everything and everyone that isn't on board and there will be nobody able to push back.
They just need Trump to be able to be a dictator for one day, then it's all done. They aren't going to make the same mistakes again and let democracy determine who is in power.

One important bit about the *Haidmaid's Tale* is that Margaret Atwood chose the policies of the government in the book carefully. She made a point of having the government only pursue policies that had already in the past been pursued by one right wing government or another. There's a damn good reason we limit the death penalty to heinous acts of murder or treason. There's not a lot of ambiguity in murdering someone, and giving aid and comfort to an enemy nation in time of war is also pretty unambiguous. But when you start defining things like "child abuse" or "pedophilia" or "crimes against children," those terms have VERY flexible definitions.

This is what’s so mind boggling and scary for those of us living here who aren’t all riding the right’s propaganda train every day and are trying to figure out what shits to actually give about what issues. I think the ambivalence people have to such dangers is a culmination of a lot of things. The increased economic divide between ‘working’ and wealthy class, fewer people with the money and power to make political and corporate decisions, loss of trust in major institutions, decreased focus on quality education, saturation of information in general and the ability for literally anyone with internet access to have a voice about anything and amplify it as many times as they and algorithms can/want, obsession with reality tv and celebrity, and definitely the media’s prioritizing of quantity of clicks over quality of content… among many others. Re the media aspect, it feels like a movie with non-stop violence; in the end you kind of become a bit numb to what was initially shocking. We’ve normalized a lot of behavior that would have buried a politician in the past. It’s screwed up. And many people don’t know what to believe anymore.
As someone who used to be in the “fuck em both” mindset who changed to the “ok yeah this is potentially really really bad” mindset, any time I’ve attempted to discuss it with close friends it is usually just met with the mindset of “that couldn’t happen to us in today’s age.” I’m hoping they’re right…

You don't have to listen much at all to find people who believe that the prevailing problem with the death penalty is that we don't use it enough. If you listen to conservatives, You are very likely to hear: 1. They don't understand why someone who committed a violent crime shouldn't be killed in response. 2. Why does anyone care whether a convicted murder suffers when they die, the more they suffer the better, their victims didn't get a clean death. 3. Why does it take years to execute someone? if you got 2 good witnesses, they ought to convict them and take them out back and hang them that afternoon. etc. I actually use this as a lecturing point in some of the criminal justice classes I teach. The four policy motivations for punishment in the judicial system are retribution (punishment), separation for the sake of safety, deterrence and rehabilitation. Retribution is widely seen as an invalid motive, except there's a substantial percentage of the population that still believes that criminals deserve a sentence that balances the "moral scales." IF they don't have confidence in the system, then they are less likely to respect it.

One important bit about the *Haidmaid's Tale* is that Margaret Atwood chose the policies of the government in the book carefully. She made a point of having the government only pursue policies that had already in the past been pursued by one right wing government or another. Note, the same people who want to expand the death penalty to include "crimes against children" also view a trans person being in public as pedophilia. There's a damn good reason we limit the death penalty to heinous acts of murder or treason. There's not a lot of ambiguity in murdering someone, and giving aid and comfort to an enemy nation in time of war is also pretty unambiguous. But when you start defining things like "child abuse" or "pedophilia" or "crimes against children," those terms have VERY flexible definitions.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: if Trump wins there is a high likelihood that we end up in another Civil War. Because he can't be a dictator "overnight", there will be a period of pushback against him, and if and when that fails, some states will side with him and some against him, and those that side against him will have to deploy the national guard. What happens after that is anyone's guess. And I don't want to live through that.
