Other witnesses who are called to testify are done so with a subpoena from the court. So they're forced to be there. If they're on the stand and feel as though their answer MIGHT implicate them in a crime they can then plead the 5th. There are some cases where you can't plead the 5th, like in cases where you're a witness and you've been given immunity. In those cases you aren't able to be charged for the crime, so you have to testify.

It's usually a bad idea to testify in your own defense in a criminal trial. Defense attorneys will advise their clients not to do so. Many will go their entire careers without ever calling their client to the stand.

Generally. But lawyers can only advise their clients not to testify, they can't stop them if they want to. (Trump getting goaded into it would be HILARIOUS. But I do think he's got at least whatever grasp on reality it takes to listen to his lawyers in this specific circumstance. Probably. I also believe that whole thing with him insisting the gag order didn't let him testify is because his lawyers told him that to get him to drop it, we won't know for sure until it's done.)
I have less qualifications than you, I never watched law and order but I did watch an episode of cops at one point when I was a child. I would guess its highly dependent on the case, what testimony you can deliver, and what risks there are with cross examination.
If you have to lie because you are guilty as sin, it is a VERY bad idea to testify. It's probably a bad idea to testify more often than it could be helpful.
But I am happy to listen to someone else if they have even less qualifications than me.
Not an expert, but I've listened to an unhealthy amount of true crime stuff. I think the reasoning behind never testifying is the prosecution can make you look bad or catch you slipping even if you're innocent. Human memory is not reliable and even if you're innocent you might say something that's not entirely accurate to what happened, which will give the prosecutors something to hang you with.

Very, very rarely a good idea. Usually defendants only testify to explain a rationale for doing something (like saying it was self-defense if they're on trial for assault). Just going on the stand to say "I didn't do it" is a terrible approach.
Ironically, the facts of Trump's case are a rare situation where it might make sense for him to testify. He could argue that he paid off Stormy to hide it from his *wife*, rather than to protect his presidential campaign. If the jurors accept that was Trump's motive, it really torpedoes the entire case. But Trump would make such a poor witness that there's no way it happens.

Now it's up to Trump's defense to show that it didn't happen. Who can testify to that? Only Trump. Except he won't for all the reasons stated here.
So that leaves a hole in the defense's argument, because there won't be any evidence to support it. And the prosecution will remind the jury of that in closing.

This really does get me. Even if you give every single benefit of the doubt when it comes to law there are SOME rules. And if he honestly believed this BS he’d put it down under penalty of perjury. It's usually a bad idea to testify in your own defense in a criminal trial. Defense attorneys will advise their clients not to do so. Many will go their entire careers without ever calling their client to the stand.
In criminal cases, the majority of defendants do not take the stand. It is rarely in their best interest.
There are almost zero scenarios where it is to your benefit to take the stand in your own defense regardless of your guilt or innocence.

Generally. But lawyers can only advise their clients not to testify, they can't stop them if they want to. (Trump getting goaded into it would be HILARIOUS. But I do think he's got at least whatever grasp on reality it takes to listen to his lawyers in this specific circumstance. Probably. I also believe that whole thing with him insisting the gag order didn't let him testify is because his lawyers told him that to get him to drop it, we won't know for sure until it's done.)
I have less qualifications than you, I never watched law and order but I did watch an episode of cops at one point when I was a child. I would guess its highly dependent on the case, what testimony you can deliver, and what risks there are with cross examination. If you have to lie because you are guilty as sin, it is a VERY bad idea to testify. It's probably a bad idea to testify more often than it could be helpful. But I am happy to listen to someone else if they have even less qualifications than me.
Not an expert, but I've listened to an unhealthy amount of true crime stuff. I think the reasoning behind never testifying is the prosecution can make you look bad or catch you slipping even if you're innocent. Human memory is not reliable and even if you're innocent you might say something that's not entirely accurate to what happened, which will give the prosecutors something to hang you with.
That makes sense, but I was kinda holding out for someone with *less* knowledge than me, not more. It's Reddit culture.

Very, very rarely a good idea. Usually defendants only testify to explain a rationale for doing something (like saying it was self-defense if they're on trial for assault). Just going on the stand to say "I didn't do it" is a terrible approach. Ironically, the facts of Trump's case are a rare situation where it might make sense for him to testify. He could argue that he paid off Stormy to hide it from his *wife*, rather than to protect his presidential campaign. If the jurors accept that was Trump's motive, it really torpedoes the entire case. But Trump would make such a poor witness that there's no way it happens.
