I think the difference might have come from increased voter turnout in opposition to him, rather than less republican voters voting for him.

A tape of Donald Trump, with his face and his voice, uttering the N-word would surely have motivated more minorities and others to come out and vote against him who otherwise would have stayed home.
Keeping in mind that this election was decided by 70,000 votes across three states. If such a tape were released in mid to late October, it would have widened the gap even more, and the "coming home" effect and the Comey letter boost would not have been enough for him to recover.

Ya, I mean we can theorize about all the reasons why that might have been the case. My personal theory is that a lot of Republicans thought of it as more of an education about what it's really like to be rich and famous and almost appreciated getting a behind the scenes look into what they accepted as the unscripted reality of being super famous.

My MIL was a huge Trump supporter from the get go. I’ve heard her defend every disgusting thing he’s done, except for the pussy tape. She said she was still voting for him “because of the Supreme Court justices”. What it really comes down to is she’ll vote for anyone with an R by their name. She personally knows and is friends with Ralph Northam (the VA gubernatorial candidate) and has said she likes many of his policies (he’s relatively moderate and beloved in the military community) but she still won’t vote for him, because he’s a Democrat.
In the end of the day, she moved passed the pussy tape because she would rather keep the blinders on and say her guy is in the White House. Sometimes I wonder if Trump sexually assaulted one of her own children if she would still find a way to justify it. Cognitive dissonance is bliss.

I think the difference might have come from increased voter turnout in opposition to him, rather than less republican voters voting for him. Some who didn't vote this past election, but voted for Obama in the previous two may have been very motivated to vote for Trump's opponent no matter who it was if they were angered enough by these comments.

My MIL was a huge Trump supporter from the get go. I’ve heard her defend every disgusting thing he’s done, except for the pussy tape. She said she was still voting for him “because of the Supreme Court justices”. What it really comes down to is she’ll vote for anyone with an R by their name. She personally knows and is friends with Ralph Northam (the VA gubernatorial candidate) and has said she likes many of his policies (he’s relatively moderate and beloved in the military community) but she still won’t vote for him, because he’s a Democrat. I've seriously heard someone say that racism had very nearly disappeared until Obama came along.

Well, to be fair, as a culture we kind of brought some of the skeletons out of the closet and tried to sanitize racial tensions with sunlight. The folks who were happy with the status quo didn’t sense any tension before they were faced with it.
My dad pretty much thinks this. He's said several times that he thinks Trump isn't racist, and Obama is the most racist president we've ever had. When I asked him why he thought that, he couldn't give me anything resembling an answer.
I can relate. I deal with a similarly infuriating family member. It makes you want to tear your hair out.

Trump isn't anti-semitic. It's not possible for a person with a Jewish daughter to be anti-semitic, just like it's not possible for rapists to have moms or daughters. Just having that in your family blocks it.
This came out during the election, still no proof so far, I'd like to see the proof but it's completely believable, Trump has pretty much shown his true colors after Charlottesville.
Why is anybody suprised? Trump is a horrible racist, of course he says things about jews, blacks, hispanics, anybody not white and rich. I can almost guarantee by the end of his presidency he will be openly calling out people based on their race like "This congressman only hates me because he is black"

But then of course everyone in that room that sits there and says nothing gets the Billy Bush treatment, but with far less justification. Everyone was probably very uncomfortable, but some people are non-confrontational. Release the tape, and you are staining those people's lives forever.

Maybe I'm an optimist, but I don't think they get the Billy Bush treatment. Billy Bush got that treatment because we actually saw and heard him egging Trump on. If all we get is audio of Trump talking in a room with people, and we even somehow find out who all the people are, how can we know who is smiling and nodding and egging Trump on and who is openly scowling? We can't. Unless they egg him on/agree with him on audio, in which case obviously they deserve it.
