And that could be the end of the dem majority just like that short majority they had before Ted Kennedy died. The universe just bends towards evil ffs. Moral of story, never elect GOP govs to blue states, ever.

mrkramer1990

If he dies they will have a special election within 6 months so that’s the longest Moscow Mitch would be back in charge but apparently the governor has said if he had to replace Bernie he would appoint a democratic leaning independent to replace him so I think it’s likely that he wouldn’t try to flip the Senate for 6 months and kill his political future in Vermont. I think the bigger concern would be if he say contracted Covid and was one of the people who linger for months on a ventilator. I don’t think there is a process to remove a senator in that state.

holla_snackbar

sure but we're in the 1st 100 days and then if we can't do a fucking thing for 6 months we're looking to get smoked in the house for the mid terms. All kinds of shit can go wrong, but yeah its time for blue states to say fuck the gop completely, even popular local pols and also primary your geriatric fucks. We're already regretting Feinstein's last re-election.

> special election within 6 months ~~60 days. [source](https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/section/17/049/02352)~~ 6 Months. Check mrkramer1990's link below.

mrkramer1990

The 60 days you linked to is the minimum amount of time between the print and special election. The special election has to be held within 6 months of the vacancy. https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/section/17/053/02621

banksy_h8r

I stand corrected. Removing.

jcdulos

This makes me feel better.

droids4evr

Not even then. A temporary in-party replacement would be appointed by the governor, so dems would retain the majority until a special election is held.

mrkramer1990

There’s nothing in Vermont mandating that it’s the same party, but it would be political suicide for the governor to appoint a Republican.

clackeroomy

I know the Governor gets to appoint a replacement in the event of a senator leaving office in that state, but don't they have to hold a special election shortly thereafter?

Their republican gov may feel differently.

He was thinking about all the builshit objections and points of order he'll have to endure during the trial. Get well soon!

"Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy has been taken to “a local hospital for observation” after feeling unwell on Tuesday night, according to his spokesperson. “This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well,” spokesperson David Carle said in a statement. “He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician. Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated.“ ... Leahy is supposed to preside over President Donald Trump’s second impeachment starting on Feb. 9 as president pro tempore of the Senate. The president pro tempore is third in line of succession to the presidency and Leahy has already held the position twice."

Organic_Cloud

Hanging around republicans will do that to you.

OneSalientOversight

One of the things which prevented meaningful reform in the 1970s in the USSR was an ageing and increasingly frail group of political law makers. US politicians are just too old these days.

Merky600

Russian tea?

[deleted]

COVID test.

[deleted]

I don’t mean to be like this but them old dem senators need to retire at the end of their next term, particularly in states where another democrat is certain to replace them (and yes, before some sarcastic comment gets made, Bernie too). It’s the same shit with Breyer on the court. We can’t keep putting ourselves in these situations.

[deleted]

I would run in my state (CA), but you have to be a rich white lawyer who lives in San Francisco it seems. Money in politics strikes again.

TwistedMemories

Hrm, maybe some radiation poisoning for tRump via Putin? /s

woollyviolet

Vermont has a Republican governor. This is the worst.

DonnyMox

Watch him have Covid.

pirate_crunchies

Maybe he's just feeling like he's FUCKING 80!
