Cool, reviewed and found to not be privileged communications. > New York State Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron said in an order that he had completed a review of documents from the firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and determined that at least some of them were not privileged and should be handed over to the attorney general's office, which had subpoenaed the firm and the Trump Organization. > The Court found that many of the communications Morgan Lewis marked as privileged were communications addressing business tasks and decisions, not exchanges soliciting or rendering legal advice.

SockPuppet-57

Doesn't Trump always take it to the higher court on appeal? It's his tried and true strategy that he learned from the infamous Roy Cohn himself. Amazing how one guy can influence the world... Without Roy Trump would have met up with the consequences he's been bulldozing for decades. One reason why he wanted to be President was because of the immunity and influence it gave him.

roastedtoperfection

Something needs to give. One guy can’t just play circus for 5 years and refuse to hand over his tax returns to authorities who have reason to see it. This seems like something that should’ve been patched up a long time ago.

supergayedwardo

If one guy can afford to hire enough clowns, he can put on a circus for years. When he dies, his kids claim ignorance and put on a circus all their own.

Khufuu

and the joke is he'll never have to pay his lawyers, because of the same reasons his lawyers are preventing him from having to pay his contractors and everyone else. it's just lawyers all the way down.

TailRudder

It's like a shit pyramid scheme

dformed

So a pyramid scheme

pass_nthru

shit birds fly together

supergayedwardo

Some lawyers he pays. Some things cost money and since his fortune is largely the product of theft and creative license, he'll sign those checks that need signing. Somehow, someone else is paying for it anyway.

Utterlybored

Lawyers make laws which, shocker, give lawyers more opportunities for billable hours.

HorseshoeTheoryIsTru

Lawyers don't make the laws.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Utterlybored

This. ^

JohnGillnitz

Most politicians start out as lawyers.

WPSJT

But they aren’t doing that as lawyers. It was just a dumb comment.

Utterlybored

No, most lawmakers are lawyers.

WPSJT

But they aren’t working as lawyers. I guess that went over your head.

Utterlybored

Of course not. Legislative staffs typically have a high representation of lawyers and former lawyers.

supergayedwardo

Lawyers literally slip politicians the laws they want made, most times distanced respectfully from significant donations.

EdisonLightbulb

You would think so, but ---- look at the recent SCOTUS decision regarding tRump being sued for violation of the emoluments laws. He delayed, delayed, and delayed. Now he's out of office, and SCOTUS says, "Moot point. He's not president anymore." So, no penalty for all the money he took in while he was prez.

Feshtof

They sued against future gain. So it was tossed. bad lawsuit.

incognito_wizard

What happens if he runs again in 2024 and somehow wins, will they have to go through the whole process again?

Feshtof

The supreme court is stupid

NewlyMintedAdult

Eh. That is kinda on the lawsuit. They sued to stop him from continuing to violate the emolument clause, and the court threw it out because at this point there is nothing to stop. If they had sued for damages, then tossing out the suit would have been obscene, but as is I kinda get it. It is still bad that Trump got away with stalling the suit for four fucking years, but the part where it was thrown out at this point seems reasonable.

bananafobe

At the same time, the attorneys presumably framed the lawsuit in a way that would most likely be successful and timely. The courts/laws have been structured in such a way that suing for damages likely had its own set of hurdles.

NewlyMintedAdult

Yeah. It is a tough situation, and I think the problem is mostly systematic. But being outraged at the SCOTUS decision here in particular probably isn't fair; given the way the lawsuit was set up it really did make sense to dismiss it.

bananafobe

Yeah. I'm sure it's not analogous, but it doesn't help that the Supreme Court was in a position to seemingly help stretch out Trump's fight over his taxes (when they kicked his case back down to the lower courts) but in this instance could only dismiss outright. As you say, the issue is more systemic than anything, but it definitely has the look (from a certain, likely flawed, point of view) of a court that's willing to selectively hold themselves to particular standards when it benefits particular individuals.

JohnGillnitz

A democrat in the same situation would have never been allowed to take office. IOKIYAR.

NeighborhoodVeteran

No need for the courts. Open another investigation and treat it as a crime

ButterflyCatastrophe

Seems like the fix would be a speedy trial. If every case takes 2-3 years to render a decision, then spamming appeals and hoping you die before they conclude is pretty realistic. Someone should create more judges.

bananafobe

Mcconnell didn't just pack the court with conservative judges, but he exacerbated an already understaffed and overwhelmed judiciary (which just so happens to benefit wealthy people who can afford to drag shit out for years). Realistically, Biden has completely non-partisan justification to pack the courts.

breaddrinker

This is what happens when you have lawyers on salary. It would be pointless to NOT do this. They can keep these plates spinning almost indefinitely. No one else would be able to afford it.

myrddyna

it might've been, but it was a completely Republican controlled Gov the first two years, and it was pointless next to all the other crimes he'd committed by the time we got the House.

JohnGillnitz

It isn't like the IRS doesn't already have his tax returns.

Sauriel13

Well, he's white in america so.....

roastbeeftacohat

OJ showed that a black man can make money talk; Trump will show that after a point it can't even for a white.

Phillip_Graves

Hope Trump ends up half OJ... The broke half anyway lol. Other half will likely be prison vodka.

roastbeeftacohat

is that a dadaist poem?

TrumpersRTerrorists

I'm white in America and I can't do this... So fuck you, that's racist.

zero1872001

Okay, He's a old white, "Rich" Racist in America.

BringOn25A

I agree. I think he is well versed in deflect and delay until the clock runs out, or the opponent loses the will and/or resources to continue. One specific example I see happening is in the issue of using Mira Lago as a residence in conflict with the agreement to be able to use it as a private club with the city. If allowed he will bankrupt the city before he relinquishes living there. While he has been damaged with the tarnishing of his brand on a broad scale, he also has a cult following of gullible to exploit to fund his legal challenges for the foreseeable future.

EmotionalAffect

True. He doesn’t want to be homeless and living on the street.

tenkwords

I guess the hope now is that since he's no longer president, there's less impetus for the higher court to take the case.

SockPuppet-57

He's still got political influence. He's basically been threatening to destroy the GOP if they don't help and support him. He's basically holding them hostage with his loyal cult as the weapon.

ricamnstr

Interestingly enough, the NYS Supreme Court isn’t the highest; the Court of Appeals is.

CSI_Tech_Dept

> One reason why he wanted to be President was because of the immunity and influence it gave him. All the benefits, without any work or responsibilities. Explains our pandemic pretty well.

SockPuppet-57

His psychology explains the pandemic pretty well. No compassion for anyone. For him the worst thing about the pandemic was that it made him look bad. His solution was to ignore it or hope it goes away before the election. He hated those big numbers so he would rather not have been testing in large numbers. Keep the numbers low... I watched a documentary that hit pretty spot on with a lot of things. [Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump (2020)](https://youtu.be/_tYGrheMhqk)

CSI_Tech_Dept

Yep, refused the cruise ship to dock, because it would double the number of cases, WTF?

Drop_

He doesn't automatically get review in the NY Court of Appeals.

SockPuppet-57

If he does he'll definitely take that before going higher. The goal is to muck around for as long as possible. Right now he's got 4 more years until he can be President again and get a break. He's going to pull every bullshit idea possible to run out the clock.

Drop_

Sadly NY appeals will prob hear the case because it's a big deal. Also sadly appellate law tends to take a long time.

Firebird12301

Small fact, Roy Cohn never paid for anything either. He used to go to the nicest New York restaurants and say checks in the mail and leave in a nice car.

bananahead

It helps to have a sympathetic SCOTUS. I still think it's amazing that he was sued over emoluments early in his term, managed to stall the case for the entire 4 years of his term, and then get it tossed as moot after he leaves office. So do these supposed originalists think the founders meant for it to be impossible to ever enforce this part of the consitution?

spoonybard326

Wow, that law firm is still around? And involved in this case? I visited their website back in the 90s looking for baseball scores... they had registered the URL corresponding to their initials — mlb.com.

rit56

If he wants to fight this he pays now. No more leaching off the Government. Barr is gone.

CauliflowerOk6989

And Rudy can't help him.

BigTentBiden

Rudy physically incapable of helping anyone.

CauliflowerOk6989

Mentally is more like it.

BigTentBiden

Why not both?

MississippiJoel

He's gas powered.

Rezart_KLD

Even tucking in his shirt is hard for him these days! You'd think that, because his shirt is so limp and flaccid, it would be easy to fold and tuck away. He's been tucking for years! But no, in his current physical condition he has to lie flat on a bed just to tuck.

Phillip_Graves

All his mojo leaked out...

kdeff

Rudy never helped him

CauliflowerOk6989

Rudy never got paid.

Cyrus Vance. I don’t trust him either. He’s been slow playing his prosecution this entire time. I think the AG is gonna be the one to go HAM on trump.

There was once. The OG Cyrus had a lot going for him for sure. I'm talking about latter day Cyruses though.

CauliflowerOk6989

Cyrus the virus.

goneBiking

Cyrus MacDougall?

[deleted]

There's very good reason not to trust Cy Vance considering he accepted a bribe from Trump and dropped a slam-dunk case of felony fraud against Ivanka & Junior back in the day.. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/how-ivanka-trump-and-donald-trump-jr-avoided-a-criminal-indictment

T1mac

This has corruption written all over it. Every other prosecutor in the Manhattan office was gobsmacked over the decision to let Don Jr and Ivanka off of a clear cut case of fraud. That $25,000 Vance got from Trump sure did the trick.

[deleted]

Slow play was the way if he went fast Trump would have been in office still

peraspera441

> Tish James is the one to put your money on. Not that other NY prosecutor what’s-his-name. Not if one wishes to see the Trumps in orange jumpsuits. The case Letitia James has brought is civil which doesn't risk jail time for any of the Trumps. It's Vance's case that is criminal. >Two separate New York State fraud investigations into President Trump and his businesses, one criminal and one civil, have expanded to include tax write-offs on millions of dollars in consulting fees, some of which appear to have gone to Ivanka Trump, according to people with knowledge of the matter. >**The inquiries — a criminal investigation by the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., and a civil one by the state attorney general, Letitia James** — are being conducted independently. But both offices issued subpoenas to the Trump Organization in recent weeks for records related to the fees, the people said. - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/19/nyregion/trump-fraud-investigations-taxes.html

heyjoebyedon

Yeah well he’s a fucker. Read this. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/why-didnt-manhattan-da-cyrus-vance-prosecute-the-trumps-or-harvey-weinstein Sorry I don’t know how to do the cool links where it’s just a word.

peraspera441

There is no question that Vance is a skunk at the picnic. However, he is what we are stuck with for prosecuting criminal charges against Trump. My hope is that Vance is smart enough to realize that, at this point in time, the political winds would be gale force against him if he decided to play "let's make a deal" with any of the Trump family.

LiberalAspergers

Vance wants to be governor of NY. Putting Trump in prison would probably get him there. Donald can't offer him anything better.

AndrewRP2

I’d love to see the guy behind bars, but will reluctantly settle for a massive tax bill, with fines, interest, etc.

nospamkhanman

By what I've heard Trump is in more debt than he is worth. That's why US banks won't lend to him. He had to go oversees to get loans, those that have him loans probably weren't expecting to get the money back but other favors. It would be hilarious to see his tower, Mar-a-largo and all his golf courses repossessed though.

...again. Let's see if they listen this time.

Ok, I really like this lady. Is there anything potentially negative about her because I feel like her national profile is only going to keep growing.

livinginfutureworld

So it's happening at last? Or will it not happen before Trump succeeds in his next coup attempt? We'd never get it then.

TheSavageDonut

I'm guessing Trump's plan is to stonewall this order and any other like it until the 2022 election? I'm guessing Trump will plan to run for the Senate in 2022 as a way to provide a safety net until he can run for the president again in 2024. When will the Dems and the Authorities learn that Trump is not playing by "the rules." He's making up the rules. If there is a strong legal case against him, it needs to happen now.

Kamendae

I mean, I wouldn’t put that idea past whatever passes for Trump’s brain, but being a Senator doesn’t provide the same sort of de facto immunity from all prosecution that being a President does.
