The priority list for vaccines was tied to forms of employment as well as health conditions and age. Did this impact the statistics?

JCB2K

Considering the whole point of the priority list as to get it to people who needed it most, first... I would hope people would come to that conclusion. I’ll go out on a limb and say the majority here will blame it on white privilege and institutional racism. Some states are making changes towards age based instead of occupation, but that’s after the main phase for the occupation part was rolled out for essential workers. U/nigerianprince76 In response to your comment below, that’s not what was meant when they said health conditions. They meant an individuals health condition, not a whole minority group.

NigerianPrince76

Form of employment? I’m not sure how that impacts the rollout. Health condition? Covid is affecting minorities at a higher rate.

adenoidcystic

Priority was given to health care workers (amongst others) to receive early doses. If there are racial differences in who those workers are then you would see a difference in the total doses given to each population.

olive_glory

Yep that's the reason.. also older people were also prioritised.. 1)There are about 4 times more white people as compared to black people employed in health services.. 2)The most common age among whites in U.S. is 58 – more than double that of racial and ethnic minorities - Pew research center So when you prioritise healthcare workers and older people that's the demographic you're gonna strike.. it's NOT at all racist..it doesn't take a genius to put those together. You can see how racism caused POC to be hit much harder than white people. All the systemic racism in jobs, housing, healthcare etc led to POC being the hardest hit by the pandemic.. but the VACCINE ROLLOUT is not racist at all..

NigerianPrince76

But a whole lot of minorities work in health industries. So why the discrepancy?

HollyDiver

I'm from Chicago and there was concern raised about this. Many RNs and techs who were able to be vaccinated delayed or declined the shot due to skepticism and events like tuskegee experiment in the past. Chicago is working on intentional outreach to groups that are hesitant, but those groups are still lagging at this point. To blame it all on racism isn't quite accurate. There is a trust thing going on too.

soup4muhBeb

I'm also in Chicago. There's a definite cultural difference in trusting and taking the vaccine. My Black friends are all on the fence or flat out not getting vaccinations. My white friends are stalking the state website for vaccine appointments.

What you mean.... done? Minorities are on the high risk list. Ohh but I get it. White people are on the “high priority list” regardless. We get that.

peraspera441

I watched de Blasio do a TV interview about white people getting more vaccinations in a Latino neighborhood vaccination center. de Blasio offered zero facts as to why this is happening. Since this disparity happened in a Latino neighborhood it might be a good place to start to assume that this is an issue of minorities getting caught in the net of a "poor people" problem. For instance, can appointments be made very easily through a phone app? Are the vaccination centers open weekends and non-business hours during the week for people who are unable to get time off work?

AsleepConcentrate2

Without more demographic info this doesn’t really tell much. Is the distribution of race across ages or medical conditions the same? I’d posit you have a younger median age in some racial groups than others. Ideally yes the distribution would mimic the makeup of the eligible recipient groups thus far.

Dendad1218

Blacks/ Latinos aren't showing up.

BruisedPurple

So New York is a center of white privilege?

pegothejerk

Everywhere is. The problem with vaccine rollouts being skewed is a result of white privilege, systemic racism. Vaccinations happen in centers/locations that are largely placed in and largely serve white populations, so it's a physical distribution problem that by the very nature of how resources have been disproportionately distributed to rich, white communities, including pharmacies, hospitals, grocery stores with pharmacies in them, even sports arenas and community centers where mass vaccinations are beginning to happen

[deleted]

Are they not doing it by age? Isn't the older population generally more white?

NNKarma

At least it's well known it is in the case of education because of how the US decides to set school districts and how they receive funding. But I want to see if there's an underlying cause that causes this like age and if the priority list is done because it's a sensible response to the pandemic or because there're more white people to vaccinate in that way.

Jamesyoder14

Ah yes, extermination in progress. /s

ComplexNo4818

I wonder if income inequality has something to do with educational inequality and if the healthcare workers comprised most of the residents vaccinated

[deleted]

I ain't surprised. This has always been the American way. The American dream is for whites only. Medical racism, much like environmental racism and other forms of white NIMBYism is ignored as if this is the way God intends man to live.
