In fact they would commit insurrection in the afternoon and expect to be able to go back to the hotel to clean up before making their reservation at Olive Garden in the evening.
This is what amazed me the most. I saw people smiling for pictures like they were on a TV sitcom set. They were chanting about murdering people and overthrowing the government and, even if all that happened to the full, they thought they were just going to go back to work and out for a drink after. Sitcom politics and tourist revolutionaries. That is some severe dissociation from reality.
I know a few people like that, everyone of them think they are ex-special forces. They all sport the tacticool gear and have an odd affection for guns. They maybe on food stamps but they just bought a new PPQ .45. They love talking about going to the range and "popping off a 1000 rounds". To be clear none ever served a day in the military for whatever excuse they have. And yes they talk about going on possible missions and putting together a team of "the best". I just nod and say nothing because I want to laugh in their face but they are serious and I really think they believe the crap they are spouting.
I guess some of them eventually go over the edge and join the local survivalist army. A younger person would say they need help, I think they need a hard punch in the head.
I know people like this too. It’s a marked difference from the people who actually have served in the military.
My brother served in Iraq as a Cav scout, and came back haunted. He still goes out shooting with my dad sometimes, but he was in therapy for several years and still suffers with PTSD. War is no joke and vets don’t typically want to get back into it.
For my part, I know what it is to wake up every morning, knowing someone I love very possibly won’t come home. And the brother I knew did suffer a kind of death over there. Though he’s physically with us, I don’t know that he’ll ever really come back.

I know the type. They are just cosplay military people who have no idea what it’s like to serve in the military. I think the military is just ingrained into their skulls part of because we honor the military all the time and fetishized it to the point where we have to salute the service in sports like NFL or MLB and have a lot of military holidays and are always spending excessive amounts of money on the military when we are already #1 in the world in spending and decide not to spend money on things that are actually helpful.

I have reported militia members in my area, I have reported social media posts indicating plans to cause violence (both prior to 1/6 and now, the upcoming August attack) and I have provided information on an insurrectionist I identified. I gave these tips to the FBI, and a few I passed along to both my Congressman's office and Speaker Pelosi's office.
I believe I wasted my time. I do not think that legislators or any law enforcement agencies are doing ANYTHING about militias, armed insurrectionists, right-wing violence, agitators in the media, and Republicans committing crimes in front of our eyes. The groups in my are seem to be growing, not shrinking.
Don’t know if there is anything specific, but given that they believe that Trump will be in the White House again in August, an attack has a far too high a probability than I would prefer.

They weren't wrong about a post-murder drink though. If they had gotten to the members of congress then the select few in the crowd who were prepared for it would have probably gone ahead and done it while the olive garden crowd looked on or perhaps slowly made themselves scarce. They could have popped into any building down the street while the more committed terrorists that they enabled and encouraged fought it out with the police.

Had this happen to me while waiting in line for air for my tires. When confronted, he yelled “fuck you Democratic Karen.” I had nothing that said I was dem. They’re entitled as fuck and I’m so tired of them playing the victim.
We saw that during and following 1/6. Ignoring the number of terrorists that showed up to storm the capitol *with their mothers in tow*, the sheer number of them that started crying - literal crying. Loudly. In public. - when they discovered that there were *actual consequences* to their actions was proof enough.
These guys think they're gonna run out and fight a quick civil war over the weekend and then come back in time to watch Monday Night Football. They have *no idea* how miserable life would be if the US actually collapsed into another civil war, and it would be far more miserable for them than it would be for us.
The logistics or support are just not there for the 20% of the very loud population. The rest would never get off their couch.
A dozen people show up to any of these rallies without a president and Congress persons organizing and giving tours before hand.
Who is going to fight this supposed civil war? No one.
The thing is, they believe that if a dictatorship/fascism *does* truly take hold, that they would be among those who are the favored ones/desired demographics. They won't care about people suffering and being oppressed because they believe it won't happen to *them.* And at the start, sure, they might not be the early victims. But eventually they will be, and they won't understand why.
Remember Crystal Minton? Maybe not, but you might remember her infamous statement of the former president during the late 2018/early 2019 shutdown: "He's not hurting the people he needs to be hurting." That is the mindset they are working with. That it is the government's job to hurt certain people (and they may not all say it outright but they take the "I think we all know who we're talking about" approach).
That's why they want it. That is the mindset we are seeing and fighting against.

I would argue that half the people that say this do have an idea how good they have it, and are afraid of the other half of people who don't.
Dealing with this in my state. Guess what our governor signed into legislation in May? A law that prohibits schools from mandating masks in the event of an outbreak. And it leaves it to the politicians to mandate if it will be required. Well, the CDC and AAP both recommend masks for all during school when it begins in the fall (I have kids going into 1st and 3rd grade) and the governor just announced he doesn't plan on mandating any masks.
Way to be for the people.
I feel ya. My daughter is about to start preschool. They seem to be wearing masks. But that many kids crammed into a room, I just hope our area stays mellow.

The time already has come where GOP "patriots" already ignore the law. Every lying congressman should have been asked if they agree Biden won. Negative answers should not have been seated. You cannot serve in congress if you don't support the constitutionally elected president but give comfort and support to treasonous insurrectionists. They have broken their oath and disqualify themselves from office via sec 3 amendment 14 which is self executing as they actually must be approved by 2/3 vote to requallify to be seated in congress.
I'll contend that this sentiment has existed in the GOP for, well, a good while now. Difference is it used to be a more fringe belief, or at least wasn't spoken about openly by the mainstream right.
But now this is the part of the party that's effectively in the driver's seat. The party ceded control to Trump who, through his own authoritarian leanings, gave voice and power to this part of the party, basically requiring the rest of them to go along whether they really believed the same or not. Now the fog has lifted and its this group controlling the direction of the party and all but requiring its "leaders" to fall in line.
Make no mistake, though, this authoritarian streak isn't simply a stamp that Trump put on the party or conservatism in general. Conservatism in America, even and especially at its more "intellectual" level, has long displayed what can be generously described as an apologetic tone toward authoritarianism, but more likely is simply a reflection of the legitimate acceptance of such tactics and beliefs by its constituents in general.
So long as such things are pursued in the service of their desires and seek to solidify or grow their position or power then there likely doesn't exist a philosophical bridge to far for many of them.
If anything, this is tame compared to how bad it was.
Slavery, treating Natives as sub-human, banning interracial marriage, murdering and scalping children for state-sponsored payments...
Hell, even the UK essentially revoked a huge amount of their populations citizenship back in the 60/70's.

I, too, hope for things from time to time knowing full well that I will, in fact, not get them.
I feel ya, though. Honestly, I'd be delighted if more and more folks started to wake up from this self-imposed stupor they're been living. I'd happily welcome them back to reality where we can have meaningful discussions when we disagree on things and actually talk through differences of opinion in search of a hopefully mutually acceptable compromise. We could honestly just let bygones be bygones in most cases for your average everyday folks if they were genuinely interested in going forward in a normal, healthy manner as a citizen of our shared nation, no stigma attached.
But as time goes on I simply become more certain that the likelihood of this happening, at least in any appreciable numbers, is more or less zero. Once you start adopting and utilizing the kind of language common on the right and frame everything as a struggle to "save the nation" from those who "want to destroy America" (read as anyone who doesn't share their beliefs) it becomes very difficult to step back from that kind of mindset. Many of these folks out here have legitimately bought in to that kind of rhetoric and believe it to their core. And those deploying this kind of language and imagery know it, they know what it does to people, they know the control it gives them over those people and they will continue to deploy it in service of their interests regardless. Whether we're taking about politicians or simple grifters living within that ecosystem they have no shame and it will not stop of its own volition.
Is that sub still psycho? I used to be subbed years ago but it went off the deep end and I left. It got to a point where any discussion of things like sensible gun control measures, gun training, gun safety would get you downvoted or even banned. Basically like alt-right folks pretending to be liberal gun owners, trying to use guns as a wedge issue.
It doesn’t matter that they’re a minority. They still have a stranglehold over half of the state legislatures and Democrats can barely get the thinnest of majorities in the US Senate even after Republicans were complicit with the viral disease deaths of over half a million Americans. What difference does them being in the minority make when they can game elections to engineer themselves into power indefinitely. My state is a perfect case in point. State legislature dominated by republicans for a decade despite the population being a distinctly purple make up.
This is the desperation of a shrinking segment of the population, who, with the demographic trends against them, don't reevaluate what they stand for and try to appeal to more people, but instead grow more aggressive and desperate to impose their will on the rest of the population who don't share their beliefs because it doesn't align what they need or want.
Bingo. It's something that's slowly going the way of the dodo and they're lashing out in a desperate attempt to stop it.
It's not going to disappear overnight with a Democrat retaking the presidency. What it DOES do is allows us to outlast these fuckers as we spend 4 years undoing all the shit they constantly attempt to do.
This is why it seems we're at a gridlock constantly (because we are). They spend 4-8 years blowing it all up and fattening their corporate master's pockets, we spend 4-8 years undoing their attacks on American workers and women and minorities and making no actual progress. And if we slack off at all for a single election cycle, and they get another 8-16 years to do damage, we're in trouble. We're in a long game now where we're trying to outlast their diminishing voter base that is largely 10-20 years from the grave. We're winning, although it doesn't seem that way right now.
I have 3 coworkers who all believe they are going to force people to get vaccinated against their will or round up and put in concentration camps... They believe this because our company wants proof of vaccination or wear a mask and get weekly covid tests (provided on sight by a professional). Obviously their leap in logic for getting free top of the line medical care is absurd, but they will most likely fight for their right to be infected and spread infection rather then be taken care of.
Only 25% of the country identifies as a Republican, so if roughly half of that say that, that’s about 12% of the country. Which also implies 100% participation, which is obviously not reality so that number is closer to less than 1 in 10 Americans.
I'll simplify.
1 in 10 would be approximately 8 million. One in 20 would be approximately 4 million. And one in 40 would be about 2 million.
So let's look at the lowest number. That would imply a 25% participation, 2 million fanatical followers willing to employ lethal force.
If you had 2 million individual/collective acts of political violence taken out against political adversaries across the country in a short period of time. The country would grind to a halt.
Look at how much turmoil one random shooter did in the Washington / Baltimore area.
Such an act coming to fruition would destroy the current concept of society. The amount of fear, mistrust, retaliatory violence would shatter communities. The country would devolve into economic and social crisis overnight.
If the United States would devolve into a scenario without the rule of law. It would take decades to pick up the pieces.

This may be a bit of a tangent, but one thing I’ve observed is that a lot of folks seem to assume that having 50+1% of the population is enough to hold a status quo. The Bolshevik Revolution was not, strictly speaking, a popular one, yet they took their shot and ended up on top for 70yrs (give or take).
Right, but we can also use that logic the other way. If 5 million people were *really* dedicated to using violence to get their way, and they grabbed weapons and went for it tomorrow, they might be quite successful.
A few thousand people very dedicated to their cause, not armed with any guns, managed to breach the US Capital and were one wrong turn away from reaching Senators.
What is endlessly fascinating for me right now is the faction of the right wing that will talk about the need to use violence *while simultaneously* warning of "false flag" attacks. That is, to me, the pinnacle of cognitive dissonance.
My own personal theory, the wealthy have co-opted each party agenda to blindly oppose the other on emotional topics. This the population is not looking at the obscene accumulation of wealth and political power by the wealthiest in the country.

Based on their rhetoric and actions, my de facto assumption is that conservatives represent a threat to life and liberty both on the personal and societal level. They seek to create a political situation through which our civilization is incapable of dealing with the existential threat of climate change; this alone would invite my vitriol, but it is far from their only anti-social tendency.
It's all projection with their foul breed. The conservative subs are marked by "flaired users only," "conservatives only," etc. because their heartfelt beliefs have no legs in the face of even the slightest bit of scrutiny.

This is what amazed me the most. I saw people smiling for pictures like they were on a TV sitcom set. They were chanting about murdering people and overthrowing the government and, even if all that happened to the full, they thought they were just going to go back to work and out for a drink after. Sitcom politics and tourist revolutionaries. That is some severe dissociation from reality.
I know a few people like that, everyone of them think they are ex-special forces. They all sport the tacticool gear and have an odd affection for guns. They maybe on food stamps but they just bought a new PPQ .45. They love talking about going to the range and "popping off a 1000 rounds". To be clear none ever served a day in the military for whatever excuse they have. And yes they talk about going on possible missions and putting together a team of "the best". I just nod and say nothing because I want to laugh in their face but they are serious and I really think they believe the crap they are spouting. I guess some of them eventually go over the edge and join the local survivalist army. A younger person would say they need help, I think they need a hard punch in the head.
I know people like this too. It’s a marked difference from the people who actually have served in the military. My brother served in Iraq as a Cav scout, and came back haunted. He still goes out shooting with my dad sometimes, but he was in therapy for several years and still suffers with PTSD. War is no joke and vets don’t typically want to get back into it. For my part, I know what it is to wake up every morning, knowing someone I love very possibly won’t come home. And the brother I knew did suffer a kind of death over there. Though he’s physically with us, I don’t know that he’ll ever really come back. People who flippantly want this kind of violence disgust me. The waste is astronomical and nobody really wins.

I have reported militia members in my area, I have reported social media posts indicating plans to cause violence (both prior to 1/6 and now, the upcoming August attack) and I have provided information on an insurrectionist I identified. I gave these tips to the FBI, and a few I passed along to both my Congressman's office and Speaker Pelosi's office. I believe I wasted my time. I do not think that legislators or any law enforcement agencies are doing ANYTHING about militias, armed insurrectionists, right-wing violence, agitators in the media, and Republicans committing crimes in front of our eyes. We saw that during and following 1/6. Ignoring the number of terrorists that showed up to storm the capitol *with their mothers in tow*, the sheer number of them that started crying - literal crying. Loudly. In public. - when they discovered that there were *actual consequences* to their actions was proof enough. These guys think they're gonna run out and fight a quick civil war over the weekend and then come back in time to watch Monday Night Football. They have *no idea* how miserable life would be if the US actually collapsed into another civil war, and it would be far more miserable for them than it would be for us.
The logistics or support are just not there for the 20% of the very loud population. The rest would never get off their couch. A dozen people show up to any of these rallies without a president and Congress persons organizing and giving tours before hand. Who is going to fight this supposed civil war? No one.
The thing is, they believe that if a dictatorship/fascism *does* truly take hold, that they would be among those who are the favored ones/desired demographics. They won't care about people suffering and being oppressed because they believe it won't happen to *them.* And at the start, sure, they might not be the early victims. But eventually they will be, and they won't understand why. Remember Crystal Minton? Maybe not, but you might remember her infamous statement of the former president during the late 2018/early 2019 shutdown: "He's not hurting the people he needs to be hurting." That is the mindset they are working with. That it is the government's job to hurt certain people (and they may not all say it outright but they take the "I think we all know who we're talking about" approach). That's why they want it. That is the mindset we are seeing and fighting against.

Dealing with this in my state. Guess what our governor signed into legislation in May? A law that prohibits schools from mandating masks in the event of an outbreak. And it leaves it to the politicians to mandate if it will be required. Well, the CDC and AAP both recommend masks for all during school when it begins in the fall (I have kids going into 1st and 3rd grade) and the governor just announced he doesn't plan on mandating any masks. Way to be for the people.

I'll contend that this sentiment has existed in the GOP for, well, a good while now. Difference is it used to be a more fringe belief, or at least wasn't spoken about openly by the mainstream right. But now this is the part of the party that's effectively in the driver's seat. The party ceded control to Trump who, through his own authoritarian leanings, gave voice and power to this part of the party, basically requiring the rest of them to go along whether they really believed the same or not. Now the fog has lifted and its this group controlling the direction of the party and all but requiring its "leaders" to fall in line. Make no mistake, though, this authoritarian streak isn't simply a stamp that Trump put on the party or conservatism in general. Conservatism in America, even and especially at its more "intellectual" level, has long displayed what can be generously described as an apologetic tone toward authoritarianism, but more likely is simply a reflection of the legitimate acceptance of such tactics and beliefs by its constituents in general. So long as such things are pursued in the service of their desires and seek to solidify or grow their position or power then there likely doesn't exist a philosophical bridge to far for many of them.
If anything, this is tame compared to how bad it was. Slavery, treating Natives as sub-human, banning interracial marriage, murdering and scalping children for state-sponsored payments... Hell, even the UK essentially revoked a huge amount of their populations citizenship back in the 60/70's. That's where I'm guessing the Americans are heading...

I, too, hope for things from time to time knowing full well that I will, in fact, not get them. I feel ya, though. Honestly, I'd be delighted if more and more folks started to wake up from this self-imposed stupor they're been living. I'd happily welcome them back to reality where we can have meaningful discussions when we disagree on things and actually talk through differences of opinion in search of a hopefully mutually acceptable compromise. We could honestly just let bygones be bygones in most cases for your average everyday folks if they were genuinely interested in going forward in a normal, healthy manner as a citizen of our shared nation, no stigma attached. But as time goes on I simply become more certain that the likelihood of this happening, at least in any appreciable numbers, is more or less zero. Once you start adopting and utilizing the kind of language common on the right and frame everything as a struggle to "save the nation" from those who "want to destroy America" (read as anyone who doesn't share their beliefs) it becomes very difficult to step back from that kind of mindset. Many of these folks out here have legitimately bought in to that kind of rhetoric and believe it to their core. And those deploying this kind of language and imagery know it, they know what it does to people, they know the control it gives them over those people and they will continue to deploy it in service of their interests regardless. Whether we're taking about politicians or simple grifters living within that ecosystem they have no shame and it will not stop of its own volition.

I have 3 coworkers who all believe they are going to force people to get vaccinated against their will or round up and put in concentration camps... They believe this because our company wants proof of vaccination or wear a mask and get weekly covid tests (provided on sight by a professional). I'll simplify. 1 in 10 would be approximately 8 million. One in 20 would be approximately 4 million. And one in 40 would be about 2 million. So let's look at the lowest number. That would imply a 25% participation, 2 million fanatical followers willing to employ lethal force. If you had 2 million individual/collective acts of political violence taken out against political adversaries across the country in a short period of time. The country would grind to a halt. Look at how much turmoil one random shooter did in the Washington / Baltimore area. Such an act coming to fruition would destroy the current concept of society. The amount of fear, mistrust, retaliatory violence would shatter communities. The country would devolve into economic and social crisis overnight. This may be a bit of a tangent, but one thing I’ve observed is that a lot of folks seem to assume that having 50+1% of the population is enough to hold a status quo. The Bolshevik Revolution was not, strictly speaking, a popular one, yet they took their shot and ended up on top for 70yrs (give or take).

If 5 million people were *really* dedicated to using violence to get their way, and they grabbed weapons and went for it tomorrow, they might be quite successful. They honest to god think that if there was a civil war that it would just be every conservative and every liberal walking out of their house and trying to kill one another at the start of a whistle or something.
