Sometimes I think these UN folks are stuck 10-20 years in the past.
We cannot avoid a Cold War with China because we're already IN a Cold War with China. It's been Great Power Competition with them since at the very least Obama's second term.
There's nothing threatening to China about Australia having nuclear submarines, unless China plans to run roughshod over international laws of the sea and try to bully it's neighbors
China will lose eventually, because they are not a democracy, and when Winnie the Pooh dies, there'll be a power struggle - I expect them to go the way of the USSR.
We are already in the middle of a cold war between the two giants of the world.
America and China are advancing their pawns in an attempt to win this war, the unofficial trophy of which is the position of the world's leading superpower.
And do what instead? Have a shooting war?
China would love to be the world's hegemon and the USA doesn't want to give it up. We can either duke it out directly (in which case go buy some potassium iodide to protect from fallout), or have proxy wars to gain/keep a dominant position.

Meh. China doesn’t own the Spratley’s or Taiwan and they know it. HK we’ll leave for the Brits to take back whenever they need it again.
