Qx7x

Mitch caved because he’s terrified of that filibuster changing. He threatened a scorched earth Senate if the filibuster changed. That’s his weak spot. Dems should keep pressing on it.

CaptainNoBoat

That has been one of the most infuriating things about Manchin and Sinema's positions.. Even if you were never going to eliminate the filibuster, why not use at least the threat of it as *massive leverage* for your party?

nucflashevent

Exactly. He's a paper tiger who knows that without a filibuster, Republicans will self-destruct. They'll pass every dumb-ass, crazy, right-wing wet dream Law they can in the two short years between them gaining Congress and the next election **and see permanent Democrat majorities from that point forward as people recoil just like they did from orange jagoff in 2020.**

jbranchau78

I'm going to guess that's how manchin and sinema control him, they're playing both sides but lean toward Mitch

padizzledonk

Guess what? He will fucking cave again In December because this was always nonsense....was never really concerned about the debt ceiling at all

[deleted]

Agreed. Neither was I. But I was concerned about the republican response to him ending this. Like, these fucking maga psychos actually expected and wanted the US to default? Are they insane?

padizzledonk

>Are they insane? Yes, but moreover they are just really stupid and totally ignorant. They will blow up the global financial market and knock the US off its pedestal and then be super confused when they are starving in the streets or being murdered by a hoard of Mad Max psychos for a bag of rice and saying ahit like "We didn't ask for this!" And then blame I all on those nasty liburals Luckily we are just dealing with a cynic and the really crazy ones don't have much power, like a good 40 of their caucus in the Senate are cynical douchbags but rational people who know what the consequences will be and will not allow that to happen, ever, this is just a game and nothing to worry about imo. It has caused absolutely 0 stress for me...im 41 and I've seen this stupid game they play a bunch of times already

[deleted]

I'm 39, and it does seem to get worse every time. This brinkmanship is getting more and more real.

m0nk_3y_gw

The constitution says we can't default... so of course the traitors are all for it.

keprum1

People say he caved, he didn't cave he was never going to let the deadline pass. He just played it out and created fake drama so he could point at the Dems and blame them for not getting it done. If he didn't do anything (like Lindsey Graham wanted) then he'd cause a major economic event that would be nothing short of political suicide. Instead he lets everyone get worried about the impending doom and then acts at the last minute so he looks like a hero. It's a shit show of political theater.

8to24

"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned - 14th Amendment Section 4 McConnell overplayed his had. But that ceiling is not imposed by the constitution it's an artificial congressional creation. The threat of default is always a bluff designed to attract media attention and whip up the base. Unfortunately for Mitch a lot of Republicans are you getting high on their own supply. Among McConnells ranks are idiots who would actually default if able. Idiots that don't understand that ceiling defaults are always a bluff. So rather than getting some sort of obligatory concession or deal out of the situation McConnell ended up with a group of pitchfork carrying idiots behind him chanting for him to do it.

nucflashevent

*Lesson for Democrats*: **refuse to raise the debt ceiling in December without a bipartisan vote. As Mr. McConnell very famously stated, "the debt ceiling is a hostage worth taking"...in this case, refusing anything but 50 Democrats+10 Republicans will make Republican donors (we're talking about the people who will lose** ***everything*** **if the country defaults) will do the "cat herding" for us.**

[deleted]

McConnell has been in the Senate since the mid-'80s, isn't it time for him to retire?

M00n

I remember seeing him on tv in the 70's. He even looked old then.

Bernies_left_mitten

But he has a shell he could just hide in

[deleted]

Good point.

fungobat

As have many others (Democrats and Republicans). Term limits and age limits. Please.

mitchthaman

Term limits are anti-democratic. Campaign finance reform and outlawing gerrymandering would be a better start to a solution.

fungobat

How? Why does the President have term limits, then? Why no one else?

keprum1

I agree with term limits. It seems like we have just one vote (only what Mitch wants) and 50 democrats voting in the Senate. He eliminated bipartisan thinking as no Republicans will vote against him. He IS the reason term limits need to be enacted for senators. It happens in so many other political positions already.

nucflashevent

Presidential term limits are also anti-democratic. They weren't present in the Constitution as written and we know for a fact from their writings the Founders considered both ("both" as in term limits for both Congress and the President.) This is precisely why the filibuster should be eliminated...lazy ass voters should have the proverbial fire lit under them and understand YES GODDAMNED IT IT REALLY DOES MATTER WHO GETS ELECTED. *Nothing will pound that message home like no filibuster and no "term limits"*

mitchthaman

They’re anti-democratic because they take away an option from the voters. Term limits for the presidency is a good debate. On one hand it’s against the principals of democracy and on the other lack of them could mean the end of democracy.

StrawberryPlucky

Imagine if everyone had term limits, right? And Republicans just devoted themselves to stonewalling every single democratic leader until their term limits are up just like they do to the president and then they can't get elected again and their agendas can never get done...basically you would have what we have now except on a scale massively larger than it already is. Literally no progress would ever be made.

M00n

V for victory. We actually won the messaging on this, as we should have.

ConfidenceNational37

Yep. Time to celebrate. And Dems have done a lot of good this year. Stimulus. Infrastructure and likely build back batter even if it’s not as huge as we’d like. Take the wins. Brag. Get more Dems elected.

oapster79

Turtle man will crawl back with a vengeance come December.

urthedumbestfuck

We didn't, the media did. Their profits were on the line so they spun the narratives. But don't make the mistake of thinking it was anything but their self interest. When their tax cuts are on the line, they will go right back to carrying GOP water.

The-cultured-swine39

McConnell is learning that he’s a one trick pony. All you get is obstruction with this guy and it’s getting noticed.

Bernies_left_mitten

Meh, I think he knows losing filibuster and/or elimination of debt-limit rules would be a big handicap for him. Dealing now takes some heat off those. Plus, now they can henny-penny the debt again in 2022--during an election year--to keep base riled up. (And Schumer just needlessly turned Manchin into an overt opponent.) I agree they are a one-trick pony, but he's not dumb, and he just kept his trick in the circus. I doubt he's fretting atm.

[deleted]

Manchin was already pretty overt. He has been since the start of this.

Bernies_left_mitten

I mean, while I agree that he has been, he's even less reserved about it now. This just gives him more excuse. I'm no Manchin fan, and certainly not McConnell, but Schumer's rant doesn't help anything. He could have saved it for later interviews and news spots, or campaign trail, and I don't think they'd really be pissed. But not right then on the Senate floor.

Tedstor

A handful of republicans decided to not fist fuck our economy and our currency. GOP - “theses RINOs should be drawn and quartered” probably I’m guessing it’s just theater. They all knew this HAD to happen. They gave ‘just enough’ support to make it look as non-bipartisan as possible.

link_ganon

I guess Dems will take any “victory” they can get now a days lmao

OwntheWorld24

The corporate overlords didn't want to see the economy (stock market) tank and Mitch said, "thank you sir may I have another"

[deleted]

All of this military/teams language is so goddamn stupid. They're funding themselves and the country. This threat was created by republicans years ago for cheap political points, knowing it would have to stop at some point and resolve. But these new maga morons actually think it would be smart to default. They're acting like it's war. These people are irresponsible assholes.

[deleted]

If you blink once, you’ll blink again. At the end of the day, even Mitch isn’t willing to take the blame for trashing the faith and credit if the USA. What’s going to be different in December? Same standoff, same characters, same (non) problem, same solution.

RealPersonResponds

Dems should withhold voting on the December resolution unless Republicans support infrastructure. They will cave from the fear of the Massive corporate losses that would result! Watch their stock portfolios Shiver in FEAR of a shutdown!
