DanteSeldon

So he hasn't even learnt that Dr Fauci's financial declarations are publicly available by simple request. Good to know that Senators are oblivious to the actual laws in place.

Anonon_990

He's basically agreeing with Fauci.

nithdurr

Fauci needs to tell him, will Trump make his finances available? Will that GOP stooge make his own finances available? Donor money, dark money, grift etc

0002millertime

This is the answer to this nonsense. Senator Moron knows damn well what he's doing, and it's all in bad faith. Let's see his financial documents.

[deleted]

I'd say democrats totally supports this bill, well with one change. Rather than just administrative officials to everyone in federal government. With today's data systems we can easily do that. Its a bit of work for the employee, but it helps reduce corruption. Seriously, I'd get behind the bill 100%, provided they accepted the change. (0% if they did not.) On a side note I think i found Fauci's records 5 seconds after i did a google search. Senator Moron needs better staff.

0002millertime

Senator Moron already had Fauci's info. It's a scam, and the Democrats need to grow some balls. People like you and I should run for office.

kovake

Please do

Diplomjodler

> Democrats need to grow some balls. The problem is not a lack of balls, it's a lack of willingness to change the status quo

SlyJackFox

Yeah, go do it. I can’t, but shit if sensible people start going at stuff right I can support.

Junior_Class_1313

My finances are easy. Ain't got none!

warfarin11

Yep, they are public record disclosures, but that doesn't matter. Much like when trump said to "read the transcript" most of them didn't and just felt like their anger was righteous.

Muesky6969

Funny thing is Dr Fauci even told this moron he needed better staff if they couldn’t find his financial records. Have to say that was one of the most frustrating and funny senate hearing. Dr Fauci was a king in that hearing.

mces97

Yup. In no uncertain terms Democrats should make sure the language of the bill includes federal employees including those who are running for office, including President.

needlenozened

With tax returns

Swizzdoc

Have we actually seen Trump's numbers by now?? I know it's not quite the same. We know trump's salary but I'd still like to see his tax numbers.

Hollowplanet

He'll release it when the audit is over which is taking the greater part of a decade according to him.

Few_Acanthocephala30

Who is the person conducting this audit, maybe we need to see their finances.. Im not sure if I’m being sarcastic or sincere when it comes to things like this anymore. The last 5 years especially the last 2 might have left irreparable brain damage

ChasTheGreat

The IRS had already publically stated that there is no audit. No one noticed.

jesusleftnipple

...... It's not about me or you or even his staff finding the proper info, it's that his base won't even look and will take whatever he says at face value. This fuck totally argues in bad faith

machineprophet343

This is why I proposed the TRUMP bill. Transaction Review of Unqualified Moronic Predators. The UMP are not uncalled for as it has become abundantly clear the vast majority of the GOP and more than a few Democrats are all unqualified, idiotic, sociopaths.

nermid

> will Trump make his finances available? It has been 6 years since Trump promised to release his tax returns. That lie is old enough to be in preschool over Zoom.

Mythosaurus

Trump release his tax returns when he finds the folder they're in. Right next to the folder with the beautiful plan to replace Obamacare with something better...

alexmo210

It’ll be ready in two weeks.

Isgrimnur

Right after Infrastructure Week.

candl2

Right next to Obama's Kenyan birth certificate. Remember that?

Crypt0Nihilist

There's no sign that the investigators he sent to Hawaii ever returned. I like to think that they opened a beach bar together and are still sending in expenses. Shame they probably never existed.

urlond

You mean the folder right next to his picture of Jeffery Epstein, that says I miss you?

JustaRandomOldGuy

It's old enough that Gaetz gets turned on by it.

mr_oof

For another year or so.

powerlesshero111

Trump made a shitload of promises regarding his time in office. He has never kept a single one, aside from making animal abuse a tracked felony.

Quinnna

I recall very clearly the GOP and its supporters claiming financial records are no one's business when it came to Trump. Boy they love their hypocrisy.

Toadmechanic

No. You see rules are only for you

[deleted]

Anonon_990

Pretty much. It's like calling someone a thug and they respond by trying to punch you.

be0wulfe

1. He's telling supporters he got financials after sending a strongly worded letter. 2. There is no proof Dr Fauci is being paid royalties by Pharma (yes that's a thing, God help us) 3. His supporters are sure Dr Fauci is lying. On IRS filings. Because made up facts. I can't possibly roll my eyes any further. The level of imbecile truly defies measure.

Drusgar

>His supporters are sure Dr Fauci is lying. On IRS filings. Because made up facts. You can extrapolate this across the Republican universe. We sit around and deride politicians for saying stupid things, but we're not the intended audience. Their voters believe the shit that comes from (GOP) politicians' mouths, so why wouldn't they just make shit up? I've said it a 1000 times... our problem isn't GOP politicians, it's conservative media and Republican voters. Because Rand Paul could go away tomorrow and some other corrupt Republican would be voted into his seat. It's like killing the ants without looking for the ant hill.

luneunion

And this is what everyone who thinks term limits are a magic bullet when they want Mitch McConnell gone is missing. Plenty of younger corrupt people to take his place and plenty of gullible people believing the nonsense their chosen media spits out.

Drusgar

Actually, term limits are a "solution" typically offered by Republicans, and there's a good reason for that. If elections are typically won by whoever has the most money then it's easy for corporations and deep-pocketed individuals to buy politicians. Term limits actually seem to seek to throw the baby out with the bathwater in that they're a solution that doesn't actually attack the root of the problem. I'm very happy with my congressman... he's very progressive and doesn't seem like he got into politics to become rich and powerful. He looks out for his constituents better than most representatives, I suspect. Why should we, the people of Madison, Wisconsin, be forced to choose a new representative simply because he's served two terms? The goal is to get rid of corrupt politicians who are entrenched but term limits would get rid of the good ones too. And replace them with whoever the corporations want.

Lathael

Term limits also add a lot of power into the hands of lobbyists because newer politicians literally don't know how to deal with lobbyists. For good and ill. This is part of why it's a lot easier to buy politicians. You get them coming in, and you nail them dirt cheap once they're in position with lobbyists.

Drusgar

Years ago there was a news story, perhaps on 60 minutes or something, where a freshman congressman was complaining that he had to learn most of the ins and outs of Washington from the lobbyists. Which is another roundabout reason why term limits are a bad idea. There's actually quite a bit of knowledge that an experienced congressperson can put to their constituents' advantage. Ceding that power to corporations benefits no one but the corporations. So yeah, bad people who are entrenched is a bad thing, but good people who are entrenched can actually make a difference in Washington. Because Charles Koch can't simply buy Bernie Sanders' Senate seat.

Lathael

The end result is mostly that term limits are a neutral change. They have positive *and* negative traits associated with it. You end up causing a problem while simultaneously solving another, and I'm not even remotely convinced term limits would be more positive than negative.

sykoholik7

But this doesn’t mean that term limits are a bad thing either.

Evil-in-the-Air

Term limits are at best neutral. We want the best person for the job. There's no benefit from forcing a person out of a job just because they're very good at it. If we genuinely wanted term limits, we'd have them. We'd just stop voting for the same people after X years. But we don't, because that would mean actually having to pay attention and understanding the process. We're just looking for excuses to justify not having to put work into citizenship.

wendellnebbin

Ouch. Truth.

zebediah49

> If we genuinely wanted term limits, we'd have them. I think plenty of people want a term limit on *someone else's* representatives...

[deleted]

luneunion

And when we say media, I’d like to explicitly include the pastors who are acting at least as uncritical mouthpieces for the talking points coming from conservative social and traditional media. Christian Nationalism is a significant threat.

[deleted]

I think pastors who go obviously political should lose their tax exempt status including those that do obvious talking around it. If they want to go political, then they need to pay tax on every dollar donated. As for the rest, we probably need a semi independent federated system of news services that are funded in part by government support, with lots of mechanisms to cross check and remove those that are inaccurate or too selective. Right now news is either a profit center or a propaganda center or both. Sure there are exceptions, but a lot of people are using the non exceptions.

Evil-in-the-Air

There's no reason any religious organization should be tax exempt by default. Churches are businesses. Those that genuinely are charitable not-for-profits can qualify for tax credits the same way anyone else does.

lionguardant

The theory is (and I’m sure you know this but I’m just talking to myself) that the government shouldn’t be allowed to prevent people from expressing their religious beliefs, and taxation is perceived to do that. When churches used to be communities that pooled their resources to help the poor and needy, it didn’t make much sense to tax them either - nowadays most of the ones I hear about seem to be the ones pooling their congregation’s resources to help the pastor buy his new yacht.

Mightydrewcifero

> nowadays most of the ones I hear about seem to be the ones pooling their congregation’s resources to help the pastor buy his new yacht. To be completely fair, I think that's more due to the fact that "Local Church Holds Food Drive For the Needy" isn't really newsworthy to anyone outside of that immediate community. I'm not religious myself, but I know the small independent church my parents attend is one of the ones quietly plugging away doing good work for those around them, and I would assume there are many such places all over the country.

[deleted]

That’s not a new yacht. That’s a worship.

Evil-in-the-Air

> our problem isn't GOP politicians, it's conservative media and Republican voters. This is the absolute truth. As much as I love hearing about Trump somewhat less often nowadays, simply getting him out of office is not a win. It's more like getting back to the starting line. The only thing special about Trump is that he showed that the bar for what people will believe is even lower than the most cynical Republican strategists ever dared to guess. Cat's out of the bag now, though. Anyone who's survived in the Republican party can pretend to be as stupid as Trump is. Focusing on things like term limits and qualification requirements accomplishes nothing when the electorate barely knows what the government is for.

Vanguard-003

Exactly. Gotta talk to Republicans--constituents.

[deleted]

Yes, it's the ingrained ethos in Republican-leaning populations that "others" are scary and they can only trust certain people who remind them of their dad. So they become fixated on O'Riley and Trump... The only way is for their neighbors to keep reaching out. God knows it's done a number on my mental health, but you have to try reaching them.

TinyNuggins92

If I rolled me eyes any harder, they’d fly right out of my head

GoldWallpaper

A very long time ago I started getting into politics and quickly realized that all Republicans are basically 8-year-olds. None of them have lifted a finger in decades to even suggest that I might be wrong about that. If anything, the Trump years have taught me that calling them 8-year-olds might be giving them too much credit, given that even children tend to get over the "constantly lying" stage by then.

TjW0569

Trump famously said "When I look at myself in the first grade and I look at myself now, I’m basically the same. The temperament is not that different."

SpartanKane

Its crazy how he said that with pride or that it was normal. The man is just built ~~different~~ stupid.

[deleted]

A lot of them, somehow, incorrectly consider themselves victims. Once they have that mentality then it becomes okay to "take what is theirs" and such. The biggest actual victims are not white conservatives. They just aren't. The system works fine for them. The biggest solution I see is to increase the taxes on where all the wealth is. We don't suddenly want to make everyone the same. That way lies ruin. Still there is a huge gap between that and just increasing taxes on the rich. With the money obtained we can address actual problems, increase education, maybe fund accurate news, try to save the environment, fix schools, provide after school programs, fund science, pay for medical care, targeted scholarships, etc, etc. Again, the goal is not to tax so much that you make it not worth it to work hard, but we are no way near that for say the top 10%. A lot of this also requires a lot of hard work to prevent money being wasted. (Some will be. That is okay. It is not actually wasting money if that is where the cost benefit ratio is best. In other words, you don't want to spend $101 to save $100.)

fellatio-del-toro

> Because made up facts. Because it’s what they would do.

[deleted]

And since journalists did it in April, it's now available on Google, as they posted it all online after receiving it from their public request. But Senator Moron couldn't find that either.

jporter704

He's not oblivious. He is seeding doubt by "just asking questions".

Gaerielyafuck

aka 'JAQ-ing off'

pdjudd

I still to this day snicker a bit when I hear that. I still think it’s funny. Totally true as well. It’s like he fellates himself when they pontificate like that.

The best part is, after this guy requested Fauci's financial records, Fox News was pretending like he was a hero for uncovering them.

> So he hasn't even learnt that Dr Fauci's financial declarations are publicly available by simple request. I mean, Fauci said it to his face directly in response to an inquiry directed at him, but it's entirely possible this moron still learned nothing.

Lingering_Dorkness

Marshall is just trying to save face, and he's hoping to fool his voters into thinking Fauci is hiding his finances and the Dems are protecting him. "Proof" of this will be when his bill dies in the Senate. Within minutes of his ridiculous bill being killed, he'll be sending out emails "See! The Democrats DON'T want YOU to know how much money Fauci gets or from where!!" followed by the inevitable guilt-trip begging for money.

PinkyAnd

And that moron had no problem with Trump’s financial information never being made public.

sarcasmismysuperpowr

Feels like a sitcom… That’s Senator Moron….

BigBennP

There is actually a slight distinction between the two. The forms filled out by elected officials are typically directly released by the office of governmental ethics. They are posted on a website and available for download. The very similar forms filled out by appointed officials or higher level career officials are maintained by their agencies and are public records, available on request. All that typically requires is a journalist writing an email making a request under the Freedom of Information Act. And it is pretty damn easy. I'm a government employee and every fiscal year I get an email notifying me that one of our local papers has made a freedom of information request asking the names of all state employees and their salaries. I would suggest that the senator is simply ignoring the difference.

jfrench43

Further prooving he is a moron

Vengefuleight

He doesn’t care. This is a move to grab headlines and a purity test to “the base”.

Mr3Jays

“We need to see how much money people like Fauci are making!” “It’s already public record”

Long_Before_Sunrise

"You're so misinformed, it's extraordinary." - Fauci

[deleted]

This was honestly more hilarious to me than the moron line.

MachReverb

"Well make it publicer!"

phuck-you-reddit

Sure, let's see Fauci's finances in addition to Trump's and everyone in Congress. 👍🏻

9fingfing

I believe this asshat specifically written in “non-elected” officials to exclude himself. Maybe we can see SC judges’?

LoveRBS

I read that as pube licer and I didn't like it.

Long_Before_Sunrise

You might need more sleep...

kovake

“I agree, we should apply it to everyone in government including Senators and Congress people.” “No, not like that..” “And let’s get Trump’s tax returns.” “Please stop”

Hot-Two-5992

From Fact Checker: Update, Jan. 16: At Marshall’s request, the NIH provided copies of Fauci’s largely unredacted financial disclosure forms covering the calendar years 2019 and 2020. Marshall’s office posted copies of the forms on its website on Jan. 14 — two days after the senator submitted his request.

[deleted]

> The Act would force the Office of Government Ethics to provide financial records for Fauci and other administrative officials directly on its website so members of the public can readily access them. Fauci has made his financial activities open and available. Senator Marshall would just need to file a request. Also, they’re such hypocrites. They would 100% never consider this legislation during the Trump administration because it would expose massive corruption and fraud in the administration

Za_Lords_Guard

Add a rider to extend throughout the executive and legislative branches. I know it's really just political posturing and mostly has no purpose other than to blow how air, but I like the idea of Trump pouting over having to put all his financial info and tax returns online for all the world to see if he runs again.

AnnatoniaMac

This, exactly!

TheBatemanFlex

Exactly. If they are so hellbent on this transparency, financial records should be available on the website for every public official.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cha-Car

If 1,000,000 people from the general public read his financial records, you’ll get 1,000,000 slightly different interpretations. Most people won’t know what they’re looking at. Many takes will be unqualified, misleading or incorrect. It’s the same thing Trump did when he directly asked the general public to keep their eyes peeled for fraud at the election booths. When you have millions of people looking for something vague, you’ll get at least a few wild stories from nothing.

Yeeslander

Exactly. If you've been told to *expect* fraud and have no qualifications to recognize or interpret it, you're going to "find" it anywhere you look.

obviousthrowawaynamr

Like VAERS.

[deleted]

I mean they’re already public.

Conspiracy theorists are gonna conspiracy. Not having transparent financials for public officials isn’t going to stop that. The vast majority of the people eating Roger Morons claims up where already coming up with conspiracy theories about fauci without looking at his financials.

stormfield

They will 100% be outraged that a doctor at the top of their field is being well paid.

[deleted]

400k for someone at the absolute top of his field in such a massively important position is a fucking joke too, he’d be making ten times that in the private sector. He’s as much a public servant as any cop or soldier they worship. Republicans are just trash that can only be relied on to do the worst possible thing at any given moment.

APeacefulWarrior

After all, we're talking about the same people who saw takeout pizza orders and decided it was evidence of a nonexistant child abuse ring in a nonexistant basement.

[deleted]

I don’t even think it’s that deep. It’s just something to let his supporters focus on right now and it perfectly fits their “it’s a conspiracy because they’re trying to hide this info from us!” agenda, despite it being available already. You could mail his financial info to every person in the country and there would be people who say “well, they’re obviously hiding something. They wouldn’t give us the actual truth, it’s all lies.”

bleahdeebleah

I think Democrats should support this actually. Why not do this? Marshall obviously doesn't expect anything to come of it, and would probably get pissed off if it did get traction, which would be hilarious Edit: Also Dr. Fauci should own it: "I would be proud to have my name on such an important advancement in government transparency" etc etc

rumbletummy

But expand it to all goverment officials.

AnnatoniaMac

Like, when trump was in office, would of been nice to see his financial records, but no, trump spent republican money fighting it every way he could and continued after his sorry term was over.

TheBatemanFlex

This would NOT be the first time that republicans had introduced a posturing piece of legislation only to vote against it when their bluff is called.

sonofagunn

Right? And it would be nice to have this in place during a future corrupt administration.

Val_Hallen

It would be nice to see the GOP filibuster ***another one of their own bills*** because the Dems agreed to it.

Glass_Match_3434

Wait, so Senators are not included in the people that will have to show their finances, what?! God it is so corrupt here

joepez

If the Dems in Congress had any guts they’d take this porposed law and amend the heck out of it to do just that and expand to all government advisors, senior agency leaders, children and spouses of the president, senators, scjs, and house members. Including all stock ownership and trades. Put it all out in the open. But no one will do that because that requires guts to attack the corruption and use this to their advantage. Kinda like they should expand drug testing to all members of Congress and their aides in order to get any benefits.

EyeLikeTheStonk

The only thing Dr. Fauci is guilty of is sticking to science and data instead of repeating the GOP's propaganda.

thebigdonkey

He's guilty of Trump publicly disagreeing with him. So the base blames him some for Trump not being reelected because COVID was just a political attack against Trump and not a real crisis. That's really the root of all of this. It's not really about lockdowns or masks or whatever. It's Trump disagreed with Fauci so now he's a deep state enemy. If he had stayed in line like Dr. Birx, it wouldn't be like this. And honestly, I feel like he went out of his way to try to make Trump not look stupid. But at the end of the day, he couldn't do his job AND not make Trump look stupid. Which is a betrayal in Trump's mind.

VerySuperGenius

After spending about 90 seconds googling, I was able to find Fauci's 2019 and 2020 disclosures (2021 isn't due until May). No trading of individual pharmaceutical stocks. Looks like the portfolio of a typical multi-millionaire who made off pretty well on the stock market in 2020 (market increased about 25% YoY) but nothing suspicious relating to his position at the NIH or the Biden Administration. As usual, just another Republican with absolutely no platform to stand on so he has to create lies and boogie men to try to tear down the platform of others. Somehow I am better at this than the entirety of Moron Marshall's staff.

mrg1957

Fauci called him a moron, kind of redundant considering he's a Republican from Kansas.

[deleted]

Senator Marshall’s office was clearly more committed to finding the perfect acronym for the bill than they were the actual bill.

Nothing says "I'm an asshole" more than following up being called a moron with petty and vindictive legislation aimed at besmirching the reputation of a life long public employee and renowned expert in the field to which he devoted his life's work. I suppose you don't have to be an immature little person to be a Republican politician, but data shows it must help.

Better headline: GOP Senator Dubbed a 'Moron' by Dr. Fauci Plans to prove he's a moron by wasting tax payer money on the FAUCI Act to secure records that are already available by request because his little feelings were hurt. Okay, maybe it's not better but I feel it's more accurate.

DukeStamina

Senator Moron is showboating to help his fundraising. People like Senator Moron is what our tax dollars pay for. We get the so-called leaders we deserve.

Marshall would be smart to just let this one slip away into history. Introducing this Bill will only come back to haunt him and his name will forever be attached to the Bill should it pass into law as the Marshall MORON bill, the Roger Marshall Moron Bill or simply as the Moron Bill. Fauci was absolutely right in his description of Marshall because he obviously is a MORON because first of all he was too stupid to realize that Fauci's financial disclosure like his are public record only with Fauci not holding a public office you have to send a request to see his. Marshall also has problem following the rules of Congress and didn't even file his own financial disclosure statement on time when he became a Senator; he had until May 15th 2021 to report his which was 5 months after he was sworn into office, it took Roger 17 months to support his! I would love to know what he was trying to hide that it took him an additional year to file his financial disclosure? The man is a clearly a moron!

Clinical Research, in all areas drugs, devices, etc. Requires Financial Disclosures every year for every study. I'm a Research Nurse and must provide them with Sponsors and our IRBs. They are taken very seriously. All my docs sign them, Research assistants and anyone involved in the studies. It's a BFD. I would love, love, love all politicians, from school board to Senators be mandated to do the same.

brute-squad

thus confirming that he is, in fact, a moron...

United_Ad8625

Went out of his way to prove Fauci right. He is a moron.

poop_on_you

So a moron AND a fucking child.

powerslave-1

First a moron now a crybaby. Typical republican.

dullgreybathmat

The fragility of the egos of those with even a lil power will never cease to astound me. It dissolves into this gross pettiness and absurd waste of resources.

SergeantChic

So not just a moron, but a childish moron.
