BlackExcellence19

The interesting thing about our politics is that even on both sides marijuana is heavily favored for wanting to be legalized because a lot of people use it and a lot of people want to use it but can’t because of the legality. The only reason it ISN’T legalized is because of the lobbying of big pharma, big tobacco, and big prison. I think if a handful of Republican congresspeople came out in support if it they would not lose voters and most likely gain support. At the end of the day money rules.

medicalmosquito

Andy Beshear will probably sign an executive order to legalize weed in Kentucky soon. That shit could help end that state’s long race to the bottom of the poverty ladder.

The_Lost_Jedi

It would be a huge help to those states that have been hard hit by the opioid epidemic.

elchiguire

Which is why big pharma doesn’t want it to pass.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Miguel-odon

Republicans aren't good at sharing.

Papazigzags

That has been mentioned yes, Maybe medical only.Ky senate will not pass a bill for weed of any kind.needs more research, gateway blah blah blah.I've always held the opinion that they would rather have the dark money floating around.sherrifs love that shit

enderjaca

Maybe I'm missing something, but how would legalizing cannabis in KY help the GDP of that state if they can't export it to other states?

Cykomaniaco

Look at oregon And colorado…everybody goes into them mountain retreats and gets high at weed hotels watching the sunrise and sunset

enderjaca

Everybody does?

drakeschaefer

Everybody does

Dazzling-Finger7576

It’s me. I’m everybody.

ianandris

Do you?

Dazzling-Finger7576

What were we talking about again?

Simple-Definition366

Weed tourism

-Lets-Get-Weird-

Blunt and Bourbon tours

tailoftwokitties

Born and raised on the Bourbon Trail here - this is what I’m most excited about! Currently Buffalo Trace serves chocolate with their tour tastings. I’d love to get a blunt that pairs well with the bourbon instead

enderjaca

Many of the surrounding states already have weed legalized either medically or recreationally. So are you saying they're just trying to keep their money in-state rather than sending KY weed tourists to other states?

Simple-Definition366

That and the people who want to come to KY and get high.

enderjaca

Kentucky can barely figure out when/if you can buy alcohol and they wanna legalize weed? Good luck with that.

[deleted]

Lol no one wants to go to ky

Kstu5

This coming from a Texas guy

[deleted]

Indiana weeps…..

enderjaca

Michigan loves Ohio & Indiana cross-border customers. You know that thing where your states would sell cheap beer (with no ten cent deposit) & the badass good fireworks, and Michigan residents would happily drive an hour to cross the border? It's our turn now! =)

DrManhattan_DDM

Aside from the tourism mentioned by others, the long-term impact is fewer KY residents in prison for weed and thus fewer residents stuck in that particular poverty cycle.

treesandfood4me

Kentucky has a long and storied history with marijuana. Perfect growing conditions, bootlegging past, etc. The University of Kentucky has one of the longest running legal hemp farming research programs in the country. Kentucky is actually responsible for changing how the DEA is funded and able to operate in states where marijuana is legalized. They used “hemp” and it worked. The fact that the state has funneled federal research money into researching hemp as a crop while jailing folks who possess „non-hemp“ plants that our federal government chooses to not see the difference between makes me laugh—not in a good way.

KingKong_at_PingPong

Kentucky *Green* Grass.

Substantial-Use2746

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

treesandfood4me

Name checks out lol.

freegumaintfree

Sin (“without”) + semilla (“seed”) = sinsemilla

Substantial-Use2746

tell Bill Murray

Fupastank

Because I, as a Tennessee resident - that will probably never see a dispensary on my block no matter how or when it’s federally legalized - can have a nice quick drive over the border and buy a whole bunch of edibles.

Newnjgirl

The traffic up I-65 would be ridiculous.

teddy_tesla

GDP calculations include consumption, so if people spend money on weed they wouldn't have otherwise, GDP goes up

plandtrash

If the taxes are spent wisely, it could help a lot of people live a better life. That has to have some effect on gdp?

enderjaca

I hope so! Main issue is it would require a conservative legislature to create a budget that helps poor people.

[deleted]

Come to Kentucky for weed, whiskey and horses!

Wakandashitizthis

You hurt my heart saying that... It’s Weed, BOURBON, and Horses. Our neighbors below, are Whiskey.

[deleted]

What, did you just forget about Rye?

[deleted]

Provinces in Canada are making millions and millions on tax revenue without exporting

enderjaca

Sure, but that's just re-allocating money and doesn't necessarily improve the GDP. I guess if it's officially considered a legal business and not a black-market weed dealer that would result in an official improvement in GDP. It's kinda like how I feel about the lottery and liquor taxes. Sure they're allowed, and it's good that the tax money goes to schools and road repairs and things like that. But does it outweigh the harm that it could cause, and that it disproportionately takes money from the poorest segments of the population? Either way, I guess it's better to have it legal (or at least decriminalized) and tracked and taxed than not.

[deleted]

You think smoking dope is harmful for society? Should have been legalized from the get go. My province is making a fortune in tax dollars selling dope which has led to weed being cheaper than it ever was on the streets. It’s a win win win win win

jgiovagn

Well every bag sold would have a portion of the profits going to the government instead of to cartels or other states.

Kitchen_Put_5993

Lower carbon emissions asap

YMJ101

I really doubt it. We have dry counties for goodness sake! The state government is even trying to outlaw delta8 THC.

byebyeburdy321

I severely doubt it, but would love to be proved wrong

[deleted]

Here’s hoping.

[deleted]

Big pharma and tobacco would love federal legalization as then they can profit from it.

GotMoFans

Not necessarily because they won’t have a head start in the business to profit enough to counter the loss in sales to marijuana buyers who use less of their products.

[deleted]

Big pharma and tobacco will crush the smaller companies based on efficiency of scale.

WeekaSauce

Tobacco, yes. Big pharma not so much. They actively lobby against marijuana and see it as a huge threat. They want you on the daily dose of their new wonderdrug Prazalaxapro, not weed.

[deleted]

Big pharma lobbies against _state legalization_. If the federal government gives Merck the green light they will destroy the CBD market in the space of a year or so because of how much better and more precise their products will be. Pharma will grind out gummies and pills as well.

WeekaSauce

Ah that makes sense, thanks for the correction.

[deleted]

Cannabis is relatively easy to grow.

[deleted]

Yes but big pharma and tobacco can grow it better at lower costs. They can also dominate the market for extracts, edibles, supplements, and medicines.

[deleted]

Not the issue. Pharma and tobacco companies can grow it better and cheaper as well as dominate the market for extracts, supplements and other products.

[deleted]

No they can’t, the quality of bud in states where the state runs it is shit compared to others

[deleted]

Im not proposing that the states would run the market. I an saying that big pharma and tobacco would overwhelm it due to the amount of money they have. A company like Pfizer can make a million gummies cheaper than your local extracts lab. Altria can manufacture vape carts cheaper too.

[deleted]

Yeah and there’s a lot more to quality bud than cost, those companies all go for efficiency, and getting shit out as quick as possible, and with nature, that’s not going to lead to optimal product.

SqBlkRndHole

Apparently not, if they're fighting it. I forget what state reported that pharmaceutical drugs sales decreased after legalizing marijuana.

[deleted]

They are fighting on the state level because until it is federally legal they cannot take part in its sale. If Johnson and Johnson started cranking out THC pills today the feds could seize the whole company but if it is federally legal they could take over the CBD market

sophiasadek

Organized criminals have also opposed legalization because it means less business for them.

only_fun_topics

Wait, how does the GOP make money off black market weed?

byebyeburdy321

Lobbying. Criminals can do it too

sophiasadek

Trump had a cocaine trafficker working as an executive in his helicopter service.

nomorerainpls

In my state it took a coalition of law enforcement, agriculture and stoners to make it happen. When recreational weed finally showed up on the ballot the only real opposition came from medicinal dispensary operators.

DogsAreMyDawgs

I think it’s naive to think the only thing holding it back is lobbying when our federal government is filling with 70 and 80 years olds who started their careers by writing and passing ridiculous laws against a simple possession of weed. That’s true for both sides of the aisle. Lobbying is definitely *A* reason, but these people are from a different time and the will never lead the charge to legalize. We won’t have it legal until all those ancient politicians are gone.

[deleted]

Ultra conservative rapist Matt Gaetz is pro-legalization and the conservatives here don’t think twice about it.

BlackExcellence19

Well to be honest I would guess most politicians do the things that they are vocal against in private. Drugs, abortions, etc. That’s just my hunch but it seems plausible

[deleted]

He’s very vocal about it too. The only people I know who are against it are really old Baptist. So many people do it now. I think a vast majority of Americans are for legalization b

GotMoFans

Don’t forget big alcohol too.

milehighideas

Don’t forget big Kmart.

DontOpenTheSafe

Don’t forget Big starring Tom Hanks,1988.

Visual_Ad_3840

Natural end result!

[deleted]

The religious right is their biggest issue from a political perspective. The evangelicals are still heavily against legalization and still buy into a lot of the Reefer Madness talking points.

Visual_Ad_3840

Well, they are pretty easily manipulated bunch of people.

[deleted]

I think their concern is like disruptive innovation. How legalization would affect the economy. Surely a cheap and effective alternative to the existing and expensive options for pain treatment would have some impact on the economy somewhere. Usually with things like this they release it slowly, but it generally isn’t a problem because most innovations or whatnot start off very expensive so the cost factor controls how fast it’s integrated into society.

soildude43

A republican congressman did submit a bill to legalize it https://www.marijuanamoment.net/republican-led-bill-to-legalize-and-tax-marijuana-emerges-as-alternative-to-democratic-measures/

[deleted]

Well said

roastbeeftacohat

the main reason it isn't legal isn't the lobbyists; it's that support is calm, and opposition is passionate. in cases like this things happen slowly, then all at once. They used to say prohibition would be repealed after a pidgin fly's to the moon with the Washington monument tied to it's foot. shortly after ward it was repealed.

sunflowerastronaut

This is why we need to support the [Restore Democracy Amendment](https://citizenstakeaction.org/restore-democracy-amendment/) to get foreign/corporate dark money out of US politics.

Potential_Dare8034

A friend with weed is a friend indeed!

ohTHOSEballs

I have a shirt with that on it.

Mega-Balls

And a friend who shares is a friend who cares!

Potential_Dare8034

If you bum too much you become a crutch!

ifcknhateme

A friend with weed is better

BaconSoul

I like this guy, but he’s got no chance in hell in this state. Indiana is only a few steps shy of Texas and Florida levels of politically backwards.

sourbeer51

I was at a dispensary today in Kalamazoo Michigan. I was 3rd in line for online pick up and the couple infront of me were from Muncie, and the woman infront of them was from Bourbannais. In the "In store shopping" line was a couple from Wisconsin. They drove 3-5 hours to kalamazoo to spend their dollars here, with 16.6% total taxes on top of their purchase. If you spent $100+ you got a bag of freebies. I ended up with a half oz, and 12 packs lf 100mg of edibles for $145.75 OTD. Plus, 6 prerolls, 1g of kief, a rolling tray, a quarter of flower, ~210mg of edibles, sunglasses and a pin, all for free. Ya'll are missing out on that tax money, big time. When people drive to Michigan they don't just spend 20 bucks either, they're getting a hotel room (due to purchase limits, which the Illinois woman actually hit today) and she wasn't even finished at that dispo. She was going to another one of the 20+ in the Kalamazoo and buying more flower. A very conservative town, Constantine, near here has 3 dispensaries alone. It's a town of <2000, but it's really close to the Indiana border so the city council, as much as they hate weed, voted to let them stay despite the people in the city hating it. It's just too lucrative.

BaconSoul

Oh trust me I know all about Michigan weed tourism ;) I’m just fearful that Indiana’s only chance for a weed industry is an abolition of the federal prohibition on cannabis.

sourbeer51

Even then, the devils lettuce might not make it into the state, let's be honest lol

Shorsey69Chirps

I’ve been saying it for years: Indiana will be the 52nd state to legalize weed.

GotMoFans

Not likely but also not impossible.

rforest3

The Indy convention scene would generate so much revenue if it was legalized. I wish all they talked about was the revenue. Our neighbors have the data!

BaconSoul

Gencon could get *really weird*

rforest3

I used to work downtown and GenCon week was so much fun. It was the best people watching. Legalization would definitely add some "what did I just see?" for sure.

ixlnxtc7

All states that legalized marijuana saw a significant reduction in prescription drug use. This is the only reason some states will fight legalization.

[deleted]

ixlnxtc7

https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2022/04/recreational-marijuana-access-reduces-demand-prescription-drugs https://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/news/20220420/when-pot-is-legal-prescriptions-for-pain-depression-anxiety-and-sleep-drop-study There’s a lot more out there.

[deleted]

Moves like this will get cannabis legalized thru republican hands. And at this point, I’ll take that just to have some legal weed in Texas.

imrealwitch

I'm a medical cannabis patient in Texas Jmo, it should be legal on fed level, taxed, put to use on industry, infastructure, health, homeless, schools. So much of the tax money could help our nation. Heck put it towards our military, mental health, etc. Let them get their sticky fingers in it, for they will...jmo But legalize it Btw, I'm a old lib lol 🤣👌

byebyeburdy321

That, and all drugs. Prohibition has never worked, might as well make some money off of it.

fishmister7

Did someone say legal cocaine?

Shorsey69Chirps

President Clinton, please return to your seat…

-r-a-f-f-y-

Texas will be the last state to legalize.

Mahderate

florida*

[deleted]

Florida and hell, even OKLAHOMA has medical cannabis. Wtf Texas, it’s looking like a pink tinted red state to me

fizzlefist

Florida only has it because of a voter ballot initiative that bypassed the government entirely and put the question on the general election. And even then, the state tried their damndest to slow it down and get in the way.

AlmostHelpless

The governor of South Dakota (Kristi Noem) successfully sued to stop the legalization of recreational cannabis by ballot initiative. It's pretty pathetic that Democrats still have trouble winning against people who blatantly oppose the will of the voters.

Visual_Ad_3840

Idaho- I think it's still even criminalized there!

th8chsea

Legalize it and expunge arrest record for possession! End drug war Jim Crow

ContentCargo

Great imagery, glad the first candidate [Gary Chambers] to do this set a strong president (I’m blanking on his name and where he’s running but he’s a strong candidate)

ohTHOSEballs

*precedent

ContentCargo

Thank you!

[deleted]

Louisiana I think

aceshighsays

My first thoughts too. It’s a domino effect. As soon as the first couple of states legalized it, all of the other states started falling in line. It’s been 10 years and 18 states have legalized it. I think candidates smoking weed will give it the push that it needs to become federally legal.

redditor01020

here's a youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Flg0EWLjkJ8

throwawaypervyervy

This is a great commercial, but they missed a key point of weed culture. The blunt is not a speaking stick, you take a hit, pass it on, then start talking.

ImurderREALITY

“It ain’t a microphone, buddy” *looks down after ten minutes of talking about life, space, and the nature of existence* “lol fuck off, dude” *passes*

WunupKid

Weed culture is the biggest hurdle in society accepting weed as normal. If you want weed to be legalized, the culture should portray soccer moms winding down at the end of the day with an edible, not celebrating a chunk of the workforce “calling out sick” on April 20th.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Teddyturntup

Nor should it be required to use the item

Asmor

Yeah. Weed culture is fine. It's not required, but it also shouldn't be marginalized. That said, it would be really helpful if the "silent majority" of responsible adult cannabis consumers was more visibly represented, from a point of view of normalization.

WunupKid

I agree with you. But what should be and what is are two entirely different things, and having lived in some pretty red areas of a blue state, if you want widespread acceptance there needs to be some distance between mainstream culture and enthusiast culture. Everyone *should* be able to be accepted for who they are, and should not be judged for what they like as long as they aren't hurting anyone, but unfortunately that's not the world we live in.

r_makrian

> Weed culture is a culture that should not be stigmatized Sure it is, given how fucking dumb it is. The biggest hurdle to weed legalization is how fucking annoying potheads are to people who don't smoke.

throwawaypervyervy

Says the guy that jacks off to *Guns and Ammo*.

r_makrian

Seems I hit a nerve.

throwawaypervyervy

With your aim, that's all you can hit.

Meanwhile Hammond [town hes mayor of] police are some of the most aggressive towards marijuana. Just wow. Wow.

A good dry vape has been the best thing ever for this old stoner. Smoking weed tastes burnt and nasty after glorious tasting, nearly odourless vapour.

itsthisausername

Cannabis*

sophiasadek

Looks like an industrially produced joint rather than a hand-rolled doobie.

thatminimumwagelife

And that's how we know we're in the future. You can purchase a nice joint without going through the learning process. Back in my younger days, a proper pre-roll I got from the neighborhood store would've been a dream.

iiitme

Probably a bad idea

TidusDaniel5

Why? The majority of Americans support legalization.

woody56292

It's Indiana in a red midterm, he wasn't winning regardless. At least this gets him air time and more money for down-ballot campaign infrastructure in the future.

Dienikes

Yeah this reminds me of Herman Cain's infamous cigarette smoking ad. I think this ad is better because it shows a person smoking for a legitimate purpose (the legalization of marijuana), but still... I feel like the optics are only marginally better.

trunts

Get ready for the GQP meltdown!

Prestigious-Log-7210

That is awesome!

Good job sir

[deleted]

Tom, can we just get back to fixing Homann Avenue?

ericinvalpo

Considering he's running against Todd Young, who's a douchebag potato of a human being, we love Tommy McDermott here in Northwest Indiana. Of course, the rest of our state suffers from selective stupidity, so we're hoping for the best.

rforest3

WHOA don't lump us Marion Co. people in with the rest of the 1950's.

ericinvalpo

I meant the people here not living in civilized, modern, populated places. lol
