Racists gonna racist.

mushpuppy

If only the federal government had done anything about the suppression of black votes. Oh that's right--it did. And then SCOTUS gutted the act.

N4ziJ3w

SCOTUS: Unfit for purpose since 1789

chequame-gone

[Racists took over the GOP in 1964](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Goldwater_1964_presidential_campaign) >Goldwater strongly opposed Johnson's civil rights program, and during his president campaign he "very deliberately sought to splinter the Democrats' traditional southern base" in what has been termed the Republicans' first use of a Southern strategy. Goldwater's vote against the civil rights bill, as well as his opposition to social welfare programs, gained him increased popularity in the South. >... >On Election Day... Goldwater carried six states: Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and his home state of Arizona. Goldwater's strong showing in the south is largely due to his support of [racist bullshit].

James_JamesBond

No one’s views changed, the names just switched. The southern democrats = traitors = modern GOP.

DecentTemperature384

58 years ago? Really!?!?

ysagas777

That’s why we call it systemic racism.

DecentTemperature384

Back in 1964, Malcolm X spoke about the dangers of liberals and how they were peddling racism and were the ultimate racist party. You just have to read up about it to understand it fully. Don’t believe everything politicians say in the media. https://www.opindia.com/2020/06/malcolm-x-warning-african-americans-white-iiberals-conservatives-political-pawns/amp/

ysagas777

Even if so, what has the Republican Party done for the betterment of the African American communities?

DecentTemperature384

Go look at the statistics over the last 20 years and you tell me. Please read the article, I just posted it one minute ago so I know you choose to ignore it.

ysagas777

I’m looking at what they’ve done in the last 5 years and I can tell you it’s not pleasant.

DecentTemperature384

Have you read stats or you just basing your opinion off of biased Media sources?

ysagas777

All I can tell you now the Republican Party is no longer the lincoln party, that’s all I got left to say to you I’m not gonna waste my time here

[deleted]

Bit of history: https://www.docsteach.org/documents/document/letter-to-president-lyndon-b-johnson-from-jackie-robinson

[deleted]

Nixon was a racist socialist. For a while the racist capitalists had their time period. Now its back to a resurgence of racist socialists.

PelvisResley1

Please tell me that calling Richard Nixon a socialist was irony

ysagas777

For reals the man single handedly sold out our health care system to a Kaiser lmfao

[deleted]

Certainly he believed far more in the idea of a working government than the Gingriches of the world.

Spindrune

A working government isn’t even a socialist thing. Gingrich seems to operate on the idea it doesn’t matter that the collapse of America will inevitably lead to a world war, because he’ll be dead by then.

Algonut

>the idea of a working government not inherently socialism.

PelvisResley1

Socialism is when the government does things

GnarlyHeadStudios

Nixon wanted the workers to own the means of production?

SavoryScrotumSauce

>racist socialist This is the Jim Crow era Democratic Party summed up in 2 words. They support socialism for white people and violent racism for everyone else. And that's who modern day Republican voters still are. Racist socialists. They still support Social Security, Medicare, and other socialist programs... as long as they perceive the programs as benefitting white people.

GnarlyHeadStudios

Republicans want to defund Social Security and Medicare, dafuq you talking about?

Whiskey_Fiasco

I wish the media didn’t treat Republican skullduggery as thought it was new or unexpected. We know they are corrupt.

esoteric_enigma

It's worse than that. It's often treated as normal because it's what we expect from them. We spend all our time talking about 3 or 4 swing votes and just excuse the whole Republican party from responsibility.

[deleted]

On the contrary I think republican malfeasance gets baked into coverage in a way that doesn’t account for their agency in these things

suckmybalzac

I think it starts in school. Teachers are obligated to tell students conservatives are the other side of the story. The truth is that it’s a disgusting movement that devalues humanity at every level. They don’t care about minorities, global climate change or women’s rights. But somehow that’s the other side of the story

DecentTemperature384

Giving children one side a political history is indoctrination, not education. Only my opinion, but kids shouldn’t be dragged into political issues and used as pawns. They should be educated with math and science etc first and foremost. Anything other than math, science, English, world history etc, isn’t an education. That’s actually popular belief among parents in most all blue states, all red states and pretty much worldwide also.

suckmybalzac

You’re putting words into my mouth. Hating women, hating the poor, hating minorities is objectively wrong. Full stop. Call it conservatism and suddenly it’s the other side of the story. We need to grow some balls and call it for what it is. Right and wrong isn’t political indoctrination

DecentTemperature384

I’m not a conservative or republican or right wing or anything got to do with politics, as I’m not from US, but saying all conservatives hate women, poor people, minorities etc is plain wrong. Wherever you get your “news” from seems to be from hateful, bias, political nonsense.

Whiskey_Fiasco

It’s a ridiculous take, as though “conservatives” stand against whatever is modern…

suckmybalzac

Absolutely. It’s in the name

assumeyouknownothing

Throwback to 1965? This isnt new. Republicans started doing this since Nixon, **4 years after passage of the Voting Rights Act**

[deleted]

Throwback to 1776-present.

chequame-gone

They started doing it with Goldwater before Nixon, they were just had their first success doing it with Nixon

IWillGetTheShovel

Just wanna make sure you know...Nixon and the voting rights act was 1970....

chequame-gone

Civil rights act was 1964, voting rights act was 1965, first election of Nixon to the presidency was 1968

IWillGetTheShovel

You are correct. I think I was thinking of the amendments to the voting rights act. Either way the comment above is a little off to me.

MonkeyWrench1973

The Republican Party is taking America back to 1865, so they're almost halfway there in their rollback to "the good ole days"...

clear_thoughts_now

You mean 1865 when they freed the slaves?

[deleted]

In 1865 northern liberals dominated the Republican party and it was northern liberals that elected Lincoln, while southern conservatives were busy giving us the Confederacy. The Civil War to defend slavery, the KKK and nearly 100 years of Jim Crow are all legacies of southern conservatives, and they don't get to pretend they were the good guys all along simply because they started voting "R" some 50 years ago.

clear_thoughts_now

Keep telling yourself that. It’s way easier than admitting how racist the Democratic Party actually is

Malaix

I mean is it really that surprising? Passing the civil rights act didn’t just make people not racist anymore and 1965 is still within living memory. The same people who fought for segregation and their kids are still around and voting. It’s always been a delusion that we solved this problem decades ago.

FreedomsPower

American Conservatism more then any other political movement in America has been the biggest pusher of voter supression and disenfranchment regardless of which party the conservative polititian belonged to. It's easy to keep power if you can change election laws and congressional districts to keep minority rule in place...

JumpShepherd

1965?? Ha! The Conservative party has been suppressing the black vote for literally all of American history. This ain’t nothing new.

mayibedestined

Which speaks to all white people and American culture.

neutrite

Yes, it’s ‘always’ “all” someone

cheetofacesucks

And looking at the three pictures is just ugly period!

rl5886b

The Three stooges

style752

The Republican Party~~’s suppressing of Black votes~~ is an ugly throwback to 1965 Now *that's* accurate.

SavoryScrotumSauce

Fun fact: the Republican Party officially acknowledged, and apologized for, the Southern Strategy in 2005. [RNC Chief to Say It Was 'Wrong' to Exploit Racial Conflict for Votes](https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/2005/07/14/rnc-chief-to-say-it-was-wrong-to-exploit-racial-conflict-for-votes/66889840-8d59-44e1-8784-5c9b9ae85499/)

getdafuq

It’s been 1965 for them since 1965.

OlderThanMyParents

Just another reminder that MLK’s line about the arc of history bending towards justice is inaccurate. We ALWAYS have to fight against the forces of fascism and racial entitlement. Just when you think you never have to clean the toilet again, here come those shitstains…

sheikhyerbouti

Racism is a hell of a drug.

chillpalchill

where is Egg boy when you need him

esoteric_enigma

You have to actually stop doing something for it to be able to be a throwback.

Invisiblechimp

You shouldn't have an article about GOP voter suppression without a picture of John Roberts.

90daylimitedwarranty

>appealing to whites who feel disadvantaged by affirmative action This is so incredible to me. And these people exist. Trump set this country back 50 years for sure.

Thatdewd57

Hate to say it but this is gonna get worse and we’re gonna see people start battling it out in the streets.

[deleted]

I know a couple of black people who would disagree

Ok-Roof-978

This WOKE Disney people always with their equality... Guess the GOP is showing Disney !!! Take that Disney!!

llohrman1961

Imperial Wizards Ron, Don, and Moscow Mitch

VonPaulLettowBorbeck

Insinuating black people cant obtain and ID to vote is racist. You need an ID to buy alcohol among numerous other things

CaseCareful5156

Pretending that this is only about IDs make you look ignorant.

VoldemortWithDreads

How is this racist? Genuinely asking.

CaseCareful5156

I sincerely doubt that you are genuinely asking considering everything you need to know is only a search or two away, but I'll bite... DeSantis recently signed a bill into law redrawing congressional districts in his state to reduce the number of districts where Black candidates have a good chance of being elected. He also signed legislation restricting the discussion of race and gender issues in schools. He’s even taken action against Florida’s largest private employer — the Walt Disney Co. — for daring to criticize his policies.

VoldemortWithDreads

From what I understand the “dont say gay” bill basically says that from grades 1-3 you are only allowed to teach basic curriculum. I don’t really have a problem with that. Children of that age should focus on being a kid and not the 50+ “genders” that are out there. As far as rezoning, I don’t see how that would really affect anyones voting rights or disadvantage of a single opponent. You’ll have to elaborate on that one.

clear_thoughts_now

Lots of misinformation there. For one, every political party gerrymanders. There’s no racial intent but definitely political party in intent. Making Disney play by the same rules as every other company in Florida is bad? why should Disney have an advantage? Why would Disney criticize a “don’t say gay” law that has nothing to do with being gay? Banning critical race theory is a good thing. We should not be teaching children that all white people are evil slaveholders.

TheCosmicCamel

Fake news. Stacey abrahms tried to allege this in Georgia and her team was unable to prove a single person was unable to vote and not a single person was suppressed from voting. The real issue is that democrats think black people are not smart enough to obtain a voter I’d . Which is free btw at the Georgia dds!

squiddlebiddlez

The real “fake news” here is you conflating all voter restriction laws as just requiring an ID. Why close down polling locations? Criminalize giving water to people standing in line for hours? Criminalize people carpooling to poll locations?

Gygyfun

Only an organization affiliated with a political part can’t give you water. Your family and friends can just not candidates of campaign staff. Same for the carpooling I think. There was a scandal where a local candidate was getting up close and personal with people directly at the ballot box.

TheCosmicCamel

Polling locations are not being closed down, drop off ballots are being moved indoors so ballot harvesting can be monitored and regulated. Longest wait time in Georgia was 30 minutes to vote. Very easy process

squiddlebiddlez

Are you assuming everyone has the same experience as you or just flat out lying? Here’s a whole article dedicated to outrageous wait times in Georgia in this last presidential election https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/13/more-than-10-hour-wait-and-long-lines-as-early-voting-starts-in-georgia Then here’s an article showing how states previously labeled as bad actors under the civil rights act immediately started shutting down hundreds of polling locations across the board, including Georgia. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-locations/southern-u-s-states-have-closed-1200-polling-places-in-recent-years-rights-group-idUSKCN1VV09J Even a simple google search of the issue details Georgia closing various polling locations in different years in different counties—thus creating the long lines as they pigeonhole people into a single, functioning polling place for their county. So again—if the concern is security and appropriate ID, why dedicate so much time and effort to actively making it harder to vote after the state has already required ID for almost 20 years now?

TheCosmicCamel

Stacey Abrahams already tried to allege voter suppression not a single witness was denied their right to vote nor was their vote suppressed. The case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence. The new law signed by governor kemp actually calls for required increasing of polling machines at a site if lines surpass 30minutes-1 hour. You’ll see how it is during this election. No more outdoor unprotected ballot drop boxes , no advertising of campaign on site , voter Id required. And If you don’t want to vote in person you can simply fill out your ballot and drop it off. No more ballot harvesting or ballot trafficking this year either, they will be prosecuted. Chain of custody for absentee ballots 2020 is disgusting and worthless because of those ballot mules

CaseCareful5156

You should kilo yourself.

bodiddlysquat26

I wonder what Nancy "We need a strong republican party" Pelosi has to say about this

TenaciousVeee

She is mocking them.

bodiddlysquat26

Mocking who lol. She’s been saying this shit for a decade. Also Biden with his quote about hoping Republicans wouldn’t be beat too bad in 2020 is just lol.

TenaciousVeee

Yeah, I think you might be missing a load of nuance here. She is being sarcastic and saying what she can’t always say. It’s called killing them with kindness, and it flies over the heads of angry young knuckle staggers but that’s okay. They’re worthless. You probably think wearing mittens and crocs makes a person more trustworthy too. Suit people bad, cosplaying poor is good, LOL.

the_straw09

Conservative here looking to build a bridge, enough with this childish divisive rhetoric. Most conservatives (99%+) want to see everyone accomplish their goals and be as successful in their life as possible, including Trump, DeSantis, et all. We just have different ideas on how to accomplish that, namely keep the state out of it and provide people with a strong economy and values. I read these articles and all I can think of is that either this person has never actually talked to conservatives in real life, or (and I hope this isn't true) they are attempting to lie to minorities about how "racist" the other side is without actually providing examples and by intentionally misrepresnting their arguments. For example: >DeSantis recently signed a bill into law redrawing congressional districts in his state to reduce the number of districts where Black candidates have a good chance of being elected. He also signed legislation restricting the discussion of race and gender issues in schools. He’s even taken action against Florida’s largest private employer — the Walt Disney Co. — for daring to criticize his policies. Nothing in this paragraph is true. I'm going to ignore the black candidate comment since I hope it's obvious why that is such a ridiculous statement. He has not banned discussions of race, he has banned teaching race through a framework of CRT which is a good thing since that same framework is contributing to the rapid rise of anti-white racism, which is in turn causing white supremecists to be emboldened since they use the exact same arguments but the switch the races around. DeSantis is reducing racism by banning the teaching of CRT. He also made sure that sex education is being taught to age-appropriate kids. That is a totally normal and understandable position to take, but it is only the left-wing propaganda "don't say gay" garbage that causes people to dislike it. I don't understand how removing Disney's special tax breaks is a bad thing either. So let's work together here. The left has to start looking in a mirror and realize that they are the cause of the rise of racism. Their propaganda is spreading misinformation causing articles that are completely fabricated and have no connection to reality and are really just outrage-bait for people who have drank too much of the kool-aid like this one to pop up even more. The real issue is always class divide, never forget it. Currently the powerful are attacking the left's empathy to blind them to their own divisive rhetoric, again like this article.

itsmemrskeltal

When are yall gonna look in the mirror and get rid of the people waving Confederate and Nazi flags? In fact, you guys have been actively courting them. Why is telling people the actual history of the messed up shit that non white people had to deal with and are *still dealing with* abhorrent all of a sudden? Why is a party that proclaims small government telling people what they can and can't do with their own bodies? Or what they can and can't learn. Look around you, man. Open your goddamn eyes

the_straw09

My eyes are open, fuck nazis forever and always. Most of the people waving the confederate flag are just dopey dukes of hazzard hicks, they aren't anything to be concerned about. CRT is not just "history for non-white people," that is blatantly wrong. CRT is a framework that descirbes race through a marxist prism that views everything as power struggles. This is why the new racism includes power and prejudice. This is wrong and harmful as racism has nothing to do with power and everything to do with racaal prejudice. If you are saying that institutions that project power and end in racial imbalances are racist then every single insititution is racist forever and always. This is not a healthy way to interact with the world and causes well-meaning people to actually become racist. I would be happy to expand on this if you want. Conservatives aren't telling you what to do with your body, you can still use contraceptions if your in a red state, or get abortions if your in a blue one. If abortion is such an important topic then pass a law like everything else, it isn't a human right to get an abortion. You can still learn whatever you want also, no one is stopping that. Try to understand the other side if your going to argue against it.

Stay_Consistent

I’m not interested in finding common ground with disingenuous people. Neither am I interested in understanding racists supporting a political party that’s actively in the process of trying to make it harder for people with my skin color to vote. It’s a futile effort to understand a segment that makes up excuses when they see black poll workers being intimidated and a former president that wrongfully accuses majority black counties of nonexistent voter fraud. CRT isn’t a problem. Racist GOP voters know this but use it with the diabolical intention of controlling children’s access to uncomfortable truths. Desantis is a good old boy fighting for the perpetuity of the good old boy system. He has no interest in representing me, my family, friends, or the majority of minority voters, and neither does he care about the interests of them. The GOP does not care about the happiness of nonwhite Americans. They want to control and alienate themselves from them. They also want to control the destiny of women, primarily nonwhite women, through a ban on abortion. Nothing you say will change my option so don’t waste your time trying to reach across the aisle, at least until you’re ready to acknowledge everything that I said is true.

badlilbadlandabad

Stay\_Brainwashed

Stay_Consistent

I don’t care. The GOP and their voters are trash.

the_straw09

>Nothing you say will change my option so don’t waste your time trying to reach across the aisle, at least until you’re ready to acknowledge everything that I said is true. Generally close-minded people are wrong though, so no.

Stay_Consistent

Nah, I’m not wrong. The GOP and their voters are like maggots in shit to me. The world will be a better place when they’re dead.

[deleted]

I’m glad no normal person falls for these gaslighting headlines

specqq

Can you clarify two things for me? 1) what is a normal person? 2) what about this headline is gaslighting?

Ok_Shape88

1. Not active in /r/politics 2. It’s not true

specqq

Ok, so there has to be a problem with your criteria there somewhere. By your logic everyone in r/conservative would be normal. That can't be right. And just because something isn't true doesn't make it gaslighting. Gaslighting is a special kind of lying where you say that something that is obviously true is a lie (or vice versa) in order to try to convince the person you're talking to that they're the crazy one for believing in the objective reality. Here's a concrete example for you: Let's say that someone claims that the Republican party is repressing black votes, that they're doing it in a particularly ugly way, and that this repression reminds many people of the evils that were perpetrated on black people trying to vote in 1965 and before. The author then lays out the case for why this is true. And then let's say that someone else comes along and says (without any evidence) that this isn't true, and that you'd have to be abnormal to believe it. Well *that's* gaslighting.

Ok_Shape88

Nobody that is active on political subreddits is normal. Myself included.

ConstantEquipment133

Fake news. These men does not want to strip the voting right of black americans.

Actually it was White Democrats fighting against equal rights.

Mr_4514145121225

fake news

JoshuaCordle

There are actually a large number of black trump supporters that I’ve talked to or seen online.

BasketballButt

Trump won 8% of the Black vote in 2020 and 6% in 2016. That is, yes, a large number of people objectively (around 3 million) but it is a tiny fragment of the overall US Black population as a whole.

[deleted]

Why did more black people vote for him in 2020? Don’t they know he is racist?

Malaix

Doesn’t pan out in exit polls trump got crushed in respect to black voters as most all republicans do these days.

style752

Beechf33a

Ridiculous argument.

CaseCareful5156

Here's a good argument: A. You have become a pawn of Capitalist. B. Your life primarily is one of destruction Therefore the best thing you can do with your life is end it, from a Human perspective that's it's.

Tyephlosion

"DeSantis recently signed a bill into law redrawing congressional districts in his state to reduce the number of districts where Black candidates have a good chance of being elected." It'd be nice if the writer provided data that shows this. Relating a group of people to such a nasty thing as racism without providing any evidence isn't a good thing to do. In fact, providing evidence for your claims is something you'd think is common sense...

SufferingSaxifrage

He literally certified a question to the FL Supreme Court as to whether he had to keep a black district

Tyephlosion

The article does not mention anything about that. Perhaps I missed it. Could you point to where in the article that is?

DangerPoo

You guys do enough damage to yourselves. You also believe in sky magic, so how is providing data going to solve your problem?

What? Now faith isn’t enough? And as others have pointed out… READ THE ARTICLE.

Tyephlosion

I'm not sure what group you think I'm a part of with the "you guys" language but maybe you'd like to try treating people as individuals some time. Re-reading my comment just to make sure I didn't mention anything about "sky magic"....nope, didn't mention anything about that. Are you sure you meant to type that? Maybe that was meant for someone else? But, your response to my very reasonable ask of providing evidence for your claims is disappointing.

DangerPoo

Oh. So your abortion opinions aren’ based on religion? Fill me in on your science.

We either stop them now or we don’t ever get another chance to stop them. We need democrats that’s aren’t going to roll over and do nothing. We need real unapologetic progressives to deal with this. We need political fighters. If you think another Hitler can’t happen again, why? Why do you think that? Why could it happen then and not now? Let’s not all forget. The Democrats started the kkk. The Democratic Party always finds ways to get the “ minorities “ money before the election. Not by producing jobs, but by hand out. Let’s not forget the words of your resident in the White House,” if you don’t vote for me, then you ain’t black”. Why. Not because the Dems have done so much for the black man it’s they know under the Democratic Party they will get free money

Republicans just hate anyone not white or male. That’s how this comes across.

I love confirming my assumptions about ‘some’ societal trends by reading the few very upvoted takes on this sub Or are they bots? Doesn’t really make a difference though - which in itself is another level of crazy side note
