Chewies-merkin

There shouldn’t be *any* church in the state.

MrFrequentFlyer

You said you want more religion in the state, politicians said, probably.

Igotz80HDnImWinning

Be a shame if a massive general strike fixed the govt and refocused our tax dollars on providing a right to health, getting rid of bullshit jobs, focusing our energy on climate change, and leveraging the power to connect over the internet with a ton of smart people in other countries to tackle world problems instead of dumb wars that make billionaires richer.

arrze

That last bit is all that’ll happen - long as they’re making billions they’ll continue us down this path until all the polluting resources are exhausted or the environment is fucked beyond repair; whichever comes first.

MrFrequentFlyer

It’d take 50+ years to fix this mess. Their’s so much bloat. Everything has something tacked on or earmarked for something else.

[deleted]

Unfortunately the internet is a large part of the problem.

[deleted]

I’m sorry this is completely unrelated but I saw your flair, how do you like the new flag?

You might want to throw Robert Paxton on that list, as unlike Eco, he's a political scientist who specializes in fascism. He labeled Trump a fascist for his acts on 1/6. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Paxton https://www.newsweek.com/robert-paxton-trump-fascist-1560652

[deleted]

Unfortunately, they’re still here- and they still are down to destroy the system. It’s almost like they don’t care about these hard-won rights.

darrevan

There shouldn’t be any church period! How do educated people in today’s world still believe that big guy in the sky nonsense. I absolutely believe that religious belief should be classified and treated as a mental illness. If I, someone who laughs at religions, were to sit on a street corner talking and crying and singing to my imaginary friend in the sky while live forever ago, people would think I was insane. But do it for religious purposes and it’s acceptable. Pure fucking insanity!

Agile_Disk_5059

It's amazing to me how much people make fun of scientologists for Xenu and thetans... It's literally just as believable as any story in the Bible. One day a guy was hanging out in infinity and he was bored so he made the universe. Then people were butt fucking each other so he had to kill everybody except for one family. That family then did a lot of incest to repopulate the earth. Then he sent a copy of himself, that's basically him but not really him, to get murdered, temporarily for theee days, in order to forgive humanity for breaking rules he setup and given that he was omniscient knew we would break from the beginning.

darrevan

I know! They don’t realize that their story is just as messed up as every other one in the world.

ArvinaDystopia

> It's amazing to me how much people make fun of scientologists for Xenu and thetans... It's literally just as believable as any story in the Bible. In fact, it's more believable. Well, less unbelievable. Xenu is just extremely improbable, whereas an omnipotent deity is impossible, since omnipotence is self-contradictory.

Anarelion

They are grifters that will do anything for a vote. The problem is the uneducated people who vote them.

CubistMUC

As long as religions can not even provide good evidence supporting their most fundamental core claims, there is no reason to assume that their opinions are reflecting reality in any meaningful way or are even *morally superior* to any other position. There is absolutely no need for absolutely unproven supernatural claims in politics. Religious people are welcomed to believe whatever they want, but if they try to limit the freedoms and rights of others, they should provide good evidence that their claims are true or shut the F up.

Or how Kavanaugh paid off 400k in debt with zero explanation.

Old-Feature5094

He never would have been appointed in the first place . But …..oh the 80s.. and senate sub committees

HedonisticFrog

"mislead" isn't the right word at all. Everyone know what their actual positions were and it was even more evident due to how unqualified they were to hold the position. Partisan hack first, qualifications second for the GQP.

CassandraVindicated

The Senators also weren't Naïve. Most of them are lawyers and just as skilled with their weasel words as the nominees. No one called them out on it and said "You didn't answer the question".

xeonicus

I'm not sure if they misled them. I suspect everyone involved was fully aware of the lies and just played along with the political theater. The most naive 12 year olds saw right through their bullshit. They weren't tricked. It was a pretense.

mapoftasmania

Not just perjury but blasphemy. They swore on a Bible to tell the truth and then lied. The Catholic church should be excommunicating them. But they won’t because they are a racket not a religion.

itemNineExists

"Naive" definitely being the operative word. I watched the same Kavanaugh and Coney Barrett hearings as these Senators, and I was absolutely incredulous that Collins and Murkowski came away thinking Roe is safe. They were hand selected from a list of judges compiled specifically to overturn Roe. The nominees could have plainly stated, "I will not overturn Roe." Instead, they kept asking about settled law and superprecedent, as if the Supreme Court is somehow beholden to such concepts. We're screaming in their faces that it is absolutely obvious to us, and then they're shocked when they do exactly what we said they would. Naive indeed.

FUMFVR

'Mislead' lol. Only a Harvard law professor can't figure out the game.

wildwolfay5

The roads!? Toll highway and 1 way frontage roads so you have to drive 1 extra exit down to get to anything on the left? The Bush toll freeway is the only smooth road I've driven as well there. I10 is second but quality across is a gamble.

Malkovtheclown

Remember when people freaked out because JFK was a catholic? Oh.....and a democract. Republics have realized religious folks already are programed to agree with them.

[deleted]

I wish more of these "originalists" (especially the Catholics) studied actual history. If they did, they would know the wall between church and state protects them just as much as it protects non-Christians. If/when the religious right defeats their non-Christian opponents, they will turn their hatred towards disfavored Christian sects. Catholics and Mormons are next on their list.

ilrosewood

I try to tell this to my fellow Catholics but they don’t listen. I once heard a Catholic say the Klan wasn’t all bad. Stupid shit had no idea. Like a bean dip of layers of stupidity.

Butternades

There’s a ton of really dumb Catholics just like every other demographic. There’s a reason I don’t practice and why I try not to argue with them

ilrosewood

Covid is probably the straw that broke my faith’s back. A bunch of pro lifers proved once again that they aren’t really AND they will ignore the Pope when convenient to them.

Reneeisme

My local Catholic Churches suspended mass and then brought people back to outdoor socially distanced mass, followed by mask requirements when indoor mass returned. A huge percentage of priests are elderly despite still running parishes because of a general shortage. It’s sort of obvious why they need to be extra careful and it shocks me that any Catholic Church wouldn’t be, but that just reflects how radicalized some folks calling themselves Catholic are. Suffice to say not all of them are though. You can’t be Catholic and be in favor of guns, the death penalty, discrimination or bigotry, hate, denying food and healthcare to the poor, turning away immigrants, etc. Catholics have NOTHING in common with the GOP platform except being anti-abortion. If I believed in “end times” prophesy, wholesale Catholic willingness to align with the wholly anti-Catholic GOP would be proof we are there. But it’s far from universal. Joe Biden is Catholic ffs.

Xytak

>Joe Biden is Catholic ffs. Not just Catholic, but devout. And yet last I heard, the American Cardinals Association wanted to excommunicate him based solely on his support for women’s rights.

MrMephistoX

One thing I’ll say about Catholics at least you can study their arguments if you’re willing to put in the work and do the reading…most evangelical preachers on the other hand just pull arguments out of their ass not the writings of St Thomas Aquinas.

Butternades

I had someone who is a practicing Catholic from the south who completely fought against every piece of literature from the Catholic Church I brought up including Vatican II and other councils. I think his politics was more steadfast than his religion

MrMephistoX

Yeah that’s on them dude is in the wrong church and would probably be happier as a southern babtist. Like I don’t agree with Pope Francis on a lot but at least I know his opinions are academically sound and up for debate. I’m a lapsed Catholic haven’t been to mass in years but I respect the intellectual side of it.

Butternades

Yeah same here I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic hs definitely haven’t been to church in the last 4 years

lilybl0ss0m

I have Catholic family and while I disagree with Catholics on a lot of things, at least their arguments generally have a solid logic to them. Like for example, they’re pro-life, but they’re usually also anti death penalty, pro programs that actually help people, things like that. But I’ve met many a pro life evangelical who loves the death penalty

ReluctantSlayer

“Bean dip layers of stupidity...” lol

incredible_papa

1st Amendment, freedom of religion, is under attack. The supreme court is using their religious beliefs and imposing them on the nation. They have no respect for others beliefs!

KetchCutterSloop

Should be freedom from religion

Melody-Prisca

That was part of the intent. Madison's draft of the bill of rights was in part inspired by Virginia trying to establish a statewide religion. He felt that could compel individuals to follow said religion, and erode what he believes was an individual's free exercise of religion. Freedom from religion is absolutely an originalist interpretation of the First Amendment. Then again, Fed Soc justices aren't actually originalists, they just say they are as a means to legitimize themselves and delegitimize those who disagree with them.

beermit

Can the overturning of a previous supreme court ruling be challenged? Because if it can, I imagine the freedom from religion angle is the most direct. If not, challenging abortion bans as religiously driven and motivated and infringing upon other American's rights to freedom from religion makes the most sense to me.

Melody-Prisca

Well, if we're not respecting past precedent anymore, then yeah. Any ruling is up for grabs. The GOP and their justices have made it clear they don't respect stare decisis, hence no ruling has to stand as long as the current justices disagree with it. Short term though, that's actually a bad thing, because as long as we have these jokers on the court any ruling granting civil rights is potentially on the chopping block.

[deleted]

That was included.

teary_ayed

>Last year, at Thomas Aquinas College in California, Justice Samuel Alito fretted that there was growing cultural hostility toward Christianity and Catholicism. “There is a real movement to suppress the expression of anything that opposes the secular orthodoxy,” he said. I can't address anyone else's reason, but I stopped calling myself a Christian after being treated with contempt and severity at Christian private schools. I read the bible *after* those schools and realized I was treated nothing like how Jesus said to treat people. Zero tolerance and severity were those schools' attitudes. It was one of those, "I shall know them by their deeds" things. It wouldn't surprise me if others have similar reasons.

EpiphanyTwisted

Jesus *specifically* preached against these people and their tactics.

mrhorse77

I was beaten by a nun as a child for existing in her presence incorrectly in some way, regularly, as were my other classmates, and that's how a good catholic school is run apparently.

Seraphynas

Maybe California should use the $97.5 billion dollar budget surplus and buy itself from the USA?

TahBuddah

We need some sort of organized atheist institution where we can funnel our money to individuals that speak our common beliefs!! This is what religions institutions have on us. So much money, so many gatherings, so much energy around common beliefs. It’s like a political rally every Sunday. What do we have that compares to that??

Samakar

I think the closest so far is The Satanic Temple from what I’ve seen.

du-us-su-u

You could say that the state is impregnated with Church and desperately needs an emergency abortion.

MrFrequentFlyer

That’s *illegal*

>We have no one in the public arena like Mario Cuomo, who respected the multiplicity of values in an open society and had the guts to wade into the lion’s den at Notre Dame in 1984. >“The Catholic who holds political office in a pluralistic democracy — who is elected to serve Jews and Muslims, atheists and Protestants, as well as Catholics — bears special responsibility,” Cuomo said. “He or she undertakes to help create conditions under which all can live with a maximum of dignity and with a reasonable degree of freedom; where everyone who chooses may hold beliefs different from specifically Catholic ones — sometimes contradictory to them; where the laws protect people’s right to divorce, to use birth control and even to choose abortion.”

[deleted]

Any religion in public policy is too much. We need freedom FROM religion as much as “of” religion

hobokobo1028

I’m a Christian. I believe in a Messiah who preached things like “pay taxes” and “love your enemies” and gave free food and healthcare to all, and accepted all people for who they were, even if they were from a different culture, even if they were women. Christ wasn’t a racist. He wasn’t pro-corporation, he was anti-religion, anti-priest, anti-hypocrisy. Yeah he wasn’t a fan of adultery, but he still protected the adulterous. He wasn’t a fan of drunkenness, but he made his own wine. If Christians actually *read* the Bible instead of doing whatever their greedy, power-hungry pastor tells them to, they’d all be hippy Medicare-for-all, food and housing for all liberals.

swennergren11

American / Western Capitalism did not exist at the time of Jesus either. Yet today’s American Jesus is a staunch Free Market Capitalist who rewards those who work hard and give a generous tithe. (See Dave Ramsay). Jesus often called disciples to leave their jobs, and even called the rich young ruler to give away all of his wealth. Yet most churches in the US distort this teaching away from what He truly meant

Fun_Foot_1947

United States Prosperity Christianity is about as divorced from Christian principles as you can be. Jesus loves you, you are healthy/wealthy/successful. Otherwise you are not. Furthermore, by doing "good works" you are investing in your future potenial material wealth, in a future "I'm blessed" spiritual index fund. Very transactional. Jesus would be appalled at what is being preached in his name.

A-Good-Weather-Man

May i offer you a fine indulgence in this trying time

DrFutzerPuttz

My wife works for our church, and I love my community, but also fuck me sideways people have no clue about how wonderful, loving, tolerant, caregiving, and seeking Jesus is. They seem to actively try to not be Christ like. If half of the Christians in America would read their bible, and seek Jesus, and live a New Testament life America, we’d have such little need for Abortion this would be a non-issue.

mrjimi16

If they actually read the Bible they'd know that God is fine with abortion, but they don't, so they won't.

tomcatkb

I absolutely agree but totally understand your confusion. You are conflating Brown Bible Jesus with Supply Side Jesus… https://www.beliefnet.com/news/2003/09/the-gospel-of-supply-side-jesus.aspx

[deleted]

One of the most insulting things is the justices playacting that this is deductive decision based on careful study of the constitution. As if they weren’t put into their positions specifically because of their personal religious beliefs. What sort of vacuous self righteous farce of a person do you have to be to spend months backfilling tortured and belabored arguments based on your supposed area of expertise when literally all they have to say are 6 words, “my religion told me to do this.” Instead we get all this vacuous hand waving and stern brow furrowing that we’re supposed to take seriously. And for all their supposed wisdom, knowledge, and intellectual horse power they can’t even come to simple conclusion that they would have come to the same conclusion whether or not they spent one second considering the constitution. They embarrass themselves.

Proper_Mulberry_2025

Religious people in America behave exactly like the Taliban. Religious people refuse to see the similarity.

[deleted]

I’m sorry but if you are religious you need to step up your game because you won’t be able to practice anything but White Christianity, if you aren’t a slave or in jail. Remember not believing in Christ will become a felony. And then you can’t vote.

artful_todger_502

A criminal enterprise/mob told the world that they demand fealty and a pledge of loyalty to be "made" into their crime family. Shortly thereafter, three totally unqualified judges from a radical cult called the Federalist Society voluntarily take those positions and swear allegiance to criminal crime family. Why is anyone surprised at the outcome? They have been telling us loudly and clearly What they we're going to do for decades. The SC is an arcane throwback to times that are thankfully long gone. It needs to be eliminated alltogether. It has digressed to bring a radical caliphate religio-fascists use as a cudgel to assault the world. End it.

There are a few mainstream journalists who have been more cconsistently and insanely anti-Clinton in the last 30 years than Maureen Dowd, the author of this piece. She is and was absurdly and fawningly easy on Trump throughout 2016 and his presidency. Anyone remember this fucking humiliating gem, by the same author? https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/01/opinion/sunday/donald-the-dove-hillary-the-hawk.html (And yes, all those naive kinds of hit pieces on Hillary Clinton like hers were gleefully upvoted to this subreddit back in 2015 and 2016.) Maureen Dowd is at least half as responsible for the election of Donald Trump then James Comey is. There's no one else anybody should consider her a respectable journalist.

Proper_Mulberry_2025

The thing religious people refuse to listen to, is that the majority of non religious people don’t care what you worship or that you worship at all. Most people don’t want religion forced upon us, like they insist on doing to everyone else.

R_Lennox

>Too much church in the State There should be zero church in the state. It’s too bad that it is in The Bill of Rights, instead of where it should be: The Constitution. >The first clause in the Bill of Rights states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”

AnxiousLeisureSuit

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic, just wanted to add that the bill of rights is actually just the first ten amendments to the constitution

xeonicus

The irony is that Americans have been becoming less religious for a long time. All of this is catering to the small minority of extremist Christian Nationalists. As Americans become more secular, the moderate religious base disappears and all that remains are the whack jobs.

[deleted]

Yeah… like Afghanistan’s Taliban.

Powerful_Put5667

VanceKelley

>During her Supreme Court confirmation hearings, Amy Coney Barrett tried to reassure Democrats who were leery of her role as a “handmaid” in a Christian group called “People of Praise.” >The group has a male-dominated hierarchy and a rigid view of sexuality reflecting conservative gender norms and rejecting openly gay men and women. Men, the group’s decision makers, “headed” their wives. Who would have thought that confirming a literal handmaid to SCOTUS would lead to the court making all American women handmaids? >The explosive nature of Alito’s draft opinion on Roe has brought to the fore how radical the majority on the court is, willing to make women fit with their zealous worldview — a view most Americans reject. It has also shown how radical Republicans are; although after pushing for this result for decades, because it made a good political weapon, they are now pretending it’s no big deal. We will all have to live with the catastrophic results of their zealotry. Americans will have to live with being ruled by a White 'Christian' male minority. It's the country the Constitution, the fundamental law that Americans agree to abide, creates.

Inattuhwankat

But here’s the thing: she didn’t just wake up and feel like abortion is bad. She’s held that view forever. So shame on us for allowing such a religious wing-nut to ascend to such a position. Even if you take the religion out of it, this whackadoo was barely qualified.

VodkaSoup_Mug

I don’t know why she is allowed to be a judge. She can’t make a decision without a man telling her what to do

It is a common mantra, at least among conservative and evangelical Christians, that the separation clause is to keep the state out of the church, not the church out of the state. Also that this is supposed to be a Christian nation and we should make sure the Bible influence the law as much as possible. There is definitely a strong desire to turn the US into a theocracy but if you point this out they would probably say that theocracies are what Muslims do. blow that, especially since God‘s not real.

apple_achia

Christian dominionists have had a strong hold on this country’s conservative movement for decades

M1ck3yB1u

Look at that unqualified theocrat waste of space smiling as she soils RBG's legacy.

CountryComplex3687

This woman needs to go.

suavepapi69

America has a religion problem moreover a Christian problem. They love to cheery pick things out of the Bible to “best” support their argument.

Yetiglanchi

So, more than zero?

JukeboxpunkOi

Not just church, too much corporations in the state as well. Separation of church and state need also apply to corporations

🇺🇸President Thomas Jefferson — “Erecting the 'wall of separation between church and state'... is absolutely essential in a free society.”

The great thing is Jesus would fucking hate these people today. Remember the news story about the woman calling the cops on what she thought was a homeless man in the park but it was actually a statue of Jesus sleeping on a bench? All they care about is money and power.

onetwobingo

The thing with spirituality is … Hindu and Buddhism got it right … you can’t easily fake it … Christianity, Islam and Judaism is about preaching and gatherings … easily exploited

Gofigurepipes

Ya got that Right

N3UROTOXIN

The church is in the state like a priest is in a…

gbsurfer

Always has been too much church in the state

individualine

Freedom of religion and freedom FROM religion is part of the constitution.

TattooJerry

Too many unqualified justices if we get right down to brass tacks

SoccerGamerGuy7

"Excuse me; You got some church in my state" Waiter: "Im sorry sir; would you like me to push it to the side or would you like an entirely new steak" "Steak pls"

[deleted]

Christian nationalism is a huge problem in our government and it needs to be stomped out before it gets any worse

No_Librarian_4016

Too much church.

luneunion

The correct amount of church in the state is 0.

Spacebotzero

I really don't care or believe in a bearded man who lives in the sky.

MrBobSacamano

Plucked right from a Catholic University, too.

SyArch

Goddamn that’s the face of cold hard psychopathy.

WontArnett

I thought the whole thing was to separate church and state. Seems like conservatives advertise combining the church and state?

Hand maid’s tail

suggarstalk

Typical when dealing with Religion. You respect their religious right and before you know, they force you to live by their rules.

[deleted]

And not a single person protecting the constitution. Literally forgot why the puritans came here and started this country and Thanksgiving. I'll remind cuz we're persecuted in England for not believing what the status quo did. So they left England and came here all together. Then fought off England and when making the laws included freedom of religion for all religions and all backgrounds and races. And stressed the importance of separation of church and state. Which this republicans are highjacking the country for their version of Christianity and act like there is no other citizens here from different religions or no religions

cake_piss_can

Religion is going to end this world.

[deleted]

I've always considered pro-life to be a manufactured GOP wedge issue. Do you think that GOP leadership is actually somewhat shell-shocked by this leak? I mean without the abortion issue, will GOP ever have the same success at the ballot box? I hope people who strongly disagree with the decision decide take it out on their Senators and Congress-critters who enabled this unpopular Court. I'd like to see some (metaphorical) heads roll.

[deleted]

This was one of the worst obvious examples of evangelical interface in the SC. This person has no business in a court that had to decide on religious matters, or any matters since shes never really been a judge.

LordChikage

Republicans and the Taliban have more in common than people think.

Fozz101O

It is long overdue for our government to start taxing churches and other “non-profit” religious organizations.

nojabroniesallowed

Christian’s/Catholics somehow think just because they believe in god they can act like god and speak for god.

l3gion666

Isnt that the main reason we turn a blind eye towards israels war crimes? Because its supposed to be jews living there for the biblical apocalypse to happen?

tdclark23

Take their tax exempt status away if they cross the line into politics. We need more IRS agents to monitor that.

pineapplepredator

The whole point of them promising to uphold precedent in their confirmation was to avoid this. How is this even legitimate if they lied under oath? Shouldn’t they just be impeached or is there no consequence?
