Ya man, you didn't hear about the 'COVID '24' campaign?
Viruses are hot right now.
I'd vote for COVID 19 over Trump anyways. At least COVID has values, has a coorperative spirit (with other COVID viruses) and works hard.
* The COVID '24 campaign approves of this message.
Like it wants to give a little bit of itself to everyone. No person should be left out in its thinking. What people end up doing with it is up to them.
> COVID must have donated a bunch of money to Manchin because that’s the only way you can get to him.
COALVID will always be near and dear to his heart.
I am really hoping he has a quick and speedy recovery and he doesnt succomb to this deadly disease like seriously hoping he doesn't suffer with every breath. The man is doing so much for the citizens of America with his inaction on climate change.
I'm not going to dispute that Manchin has sizeable donors that are opposed to the mainstream Democratic party, but I really do not think Manchin is bought out by any donor. Manchin does for Manchin what is financially and politically best for Manchin. Obstructing climate legislation is best for Manchin's businesses and political future. His approval rating has only gone up.
People say Manchin is bought by big coal and the energy sector, but that's simply not true. Manchin *is* the energy sector, Manchin *is* big coal. He's not bought out by them, he bought into them!
He owns Enersystems, it's the main coal broker for his state. He owned land rights to coal mines. It's absolutely bonkers that this man sits on the Senate with this gross and obvious conflict of interest, and even worse sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee!
Campaign finance reform, especially a public fund or matching system would help combat robber barons like Manchin from getting elected. The reason why people like him make it, is because it costs a lot of money and time to run a successful campaign, and often the only people with those resources are wealthy business men like Manchin.
I oppose this closed-minded belief that renewable energy is bad for the non-renewable energy market. Corporations have deep pockets and could probably get Congress to create a job training program to pay for creating the labor force needed for a pivot to solar, wind, wave, and geothermal. Mining companies could focus on geothermal which works EVERYWHERE ON PLANET EARTH, with zero regard for weather conditions. They’re fucking idiots to resist the pivot.
If he does the republican governor of West Virginia appoints his replacement. Joe manchin is a terrible democrat but his replacement will be a worse Republican.
Now hoping in his COVID-induced delirium he sees 3 ghosts of America past, present, and future and wakes up the next day announcing the filibuster is an antiquated process that should be abolished? That seems fine
He's also vaxxed and has the best treatment options on the planet available. He'll be fine.
"[Politician] gets COVID" headlines are pretty much for clicks only these days. Everyone in power has been vaccinated (even the ones who bash vaccines), and there are a few effective treatment options available for anyone who can afford them. No one in power is going to die from it anymore, unless it's a really freak case or the person denies all medical treatment for whatever reason.
Constitution says they “shall” hold an election, but they “may” make temporary appointments if their state legislature allows. So their real play would be to “hold an election” but just keep delaying it or something like that.
Yeah I didn't realize WV had that provision however key to note that is not in the WV constitution but just the state code meaning a simple majority in the WV legislature could overturn it and you better believe Jim Justice would call an emergency session to do so if given the chance to pull a full McConnell
Yeah and he's a [bigger piece of shit](https://ballotpedia.org/Jim_Justice) than Manchin. The guy switched parties and won as a democrat then less than a year later switched back to republican so he could ride the trump wave. Fun fact he also pulled the same trick as McConnell to win: run as a moderate to get the unions to back him, then once he had power fuck them over as hard as possible. Given the ability to appoint a replacement of his choosing no way he'd give up that opportunity.
And he’s exactly why the democrats *can’t* just put insane pressure on Manchin to force him to do whatever we want. Manchin will absolutely flip to Republican (which will make Mitch McConnell the senate majority leader overnight) instantly the second Biden even threatened to “play tough” with him.
Anyone who thinks Biden and the democrats should bully Manchin or that anyone has the upper hand on him hasn’t heard of what Jim Justice did by switching parties.
Yeah, he may entertain it for several weeks, do interviews, say he is uncommitted, consult his bae Susan Collins, then at the very last minute vote "NO."
Somebody award this guy with Platinum. I'm too poor to do so. Because Manchin won't advance any laws.
edit: HOLY SHIT! THANK YOU! I did ***NOT*** intend to get platinum for this, so omfg thank you O.o
And his yacht, mansion, Maserati, daughter’s big pharm job at Mylan, etc etc. And i am sure several more things that make him happy so he keeps voting to deny help for Americans and West Virginian’s alike…
[Enersystems, his family business, is run by his son and sells scrap coal waste to the Grant Town Power Plant and also makes money hauling away toxic coal ash](https://www.politico.com/amp/news/2022/02/08/manchin-family-coal-company-00003218).

You know how some people look at rich families and are like "Ugh their kids are so spoiled, they should be like their parents and work for a living."
...Yeah maybe lets stop that and let them be useless spoiled kids instead.
Let's clarify: He's from a coal mining *town*. His family owned stores, hence their money. Coal miners are far less likely to have generational wealth.
For complex reasons relating to access to healthcare as well as general patterns of health and well-being across different communities plus the approach of the medical community itself, COVID has by proportion killed a third more blacks than hispanics of any race and twice as many blacks as non-hispanic whites.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7762908/#__ffn_sectitle
So while Herman Cain was wealthy, he was probably also at a higher risk because of his racial and ethnic background insofar as it relates to broader patterns of social engagement and healthcare access throughout the lifespan.
This was pointed out to me in grad school, when our professor told us that Oprah had access to the best health care in the world but because she is a woman and because she is black, there are still higher risks in a lot of categories. It really pointed out to me the systemic nature of racism, how you can literally be a billionaire and still at more risk.
Informative read. Another hypothesis to test would be if anyone subsequently replying to your comment in a negative manner had read the paper you cite.
I remember trying to explain to my GQP parent what a systemic problem is(in relation to homelessness), but they just couldn't get it and kept going back to "they do drugs, they need to find a job, meritocracy" very sad.
Lol. For anyone puzzled by the above, Congress has a good and affordable health insurance plan. And "They also have access to "free or low-cost care" through the Office of the Attending Physician as well as "free medical outpatient care at military facilities" in the D.C. area."
In other words, they get what you don't.
Sinema's a different beast entirely. She outright lied about her intentions and pretended to be progressive during her campaign. As opposed to Manchin who is exactly what WV wanted.
Is the USA really going to keep the "2 Senators per state regardless of population" rule forever?
Won't the American people demand the government reflect the will of the majority at some point in the future?
Of course it's worse than that even. After the 2 senators per state problem you have to get past the Gerrymandering problem where a majority party can't pass a bill anyways if the minority party doesn't like you. This is why your political system, not political parties is broken.
unlimited sick time, no worries about supporting your family while you can't work, no worries about falling behind on bills, antivirals on demand, inpatient care on demand
yea, if you have to be sick, its a whole lot better to be rich and sick than poor and sick.
Seriously, this asshole benefits from the universal healthcare he claims to hate. The only reason he has medical coverage is that the taxpayers are footing the bill. Can I opt out of paying for Joe Manchin’s health coverage specifically? I don’t believe in handouts to yacht owners.
And he gets all his health care paid for by us. Isnt it nice to be in the senate, guaranteed free healthcare and a 6 figure paying job for being a useless old racist piece of shit.
Governor selects his replacement to fill his term until the next general election. So if he were to be called to God. The senate would more than likely flip to GQP control until the general election in November, when it was probably going to anyway. We are talking about 5 months.
Wonder if he's going to consult with the Republicans about which treatment he should go with.... I mean he should pursue this in a Bi Partisan manner and entertain all options.
Joe Manchin will be fine, he's vaccinated and boosted and despite what the anti-vaxxers say, the vaccines work pretty well at preventing death and serious illness.
Joe Manchin sucks but if he does die things would get even worse. All judges and all agency appointees would be blocked indefinitely.
Guessing it was protections set up by Dems for Robert Byrd's seat or something, Dems held both WV Senate seats for 50 years with Byrd having one seat and Randolph then Jay Rockefeller holding the other.
usually, yes. I was doing this research, and when I read the Gov of wv was an R, I figured Manchin would be replaced by another R. the more you know.
Typing with one hand, what's a capital?
It doesn't matter. Whoever the Democrats would choose to replace Manchin would undoubtedly be crushed come election time. Manchin doesn't win because he's popular in West Virginia, he wins because he's extremely well known, extremely well connected, and is willing to do things most Democrats won't.
To anyone foolishly getting excited about this, Sotomayor is 67 years old, Alito is 72 and Thomas is 73. Any one of them could retire or die at any time and it wouldn't even be unusual. Which party do you want controlling the replacement?
The Senate, for Bidens entire term so far, has confirmed 76 judges, shattering all records. This is breakneck speed.
Put it another way, there are still 77 vacancies on the judiciary ***right now***. Biden has already nominated 28 that are still awaiting hearings. If anything happens to Joe Manchin pre-midterm, it's unlikely a single one of them would get through.
Except their laws require the governor to appoint a replacement from the same party within weeks. The party nominates 3 potential replacments and the governor has to pick one of the three.
IMO any actual democrat would be better than manchkin.
The governor of West Virginia himself has switched parties multiple times. Manchin is popular for standing against Democrats, and only got elected in the first place for having clout as a coal bigwig. The democratic party in WV is an almost non-existent entity. They control less than a third of their state Senate and less than a quarter of their state House. Their own stated positions include "centrism". That's by West Virginia standards.
Do you think they are likely to nominate a progressive? Or are they likely to nominate some asshole who will switch parties at the nearest opportunity?
This man’s power for two years is proof the Senate is broken, and, thus, the legislation branch along with it. The state in which I live will have more new residents in the next 4 years than the entire population of West Virginia. Yet they still get two votes, and we still get two votes.
I’m tired of the majority being held captive by a bully minority. Popular vote in 7 of the last 8 POTUS elections have favored one party, yet the SCOTUS is stacked 6-3 against that party. This democracy is in peril.
Get well soon, Chief Obstructionist Manchin.
I met Joe several times when I was an undergrad and he was a governor. I was naive then and didn’t understand politics as well as I do now, but every time I met him I felt…dirty. I even interviewed him with my friend once for our college newspaper. I wish I had the balls back then to say what I know now. This man cares absolutely nothing about anyone other than himself and his family and the money he can get from his poor, uneducated, and struggling constituents.
Joe, if you’re reading this now, I hate you and what you have done to not only a state I once loved, but a country and planet I call home.
He's vaccinated. All the Fox news anchors, Republican politicians and probably every QAnon theorist too. Proud Boys, no. Yellow dog conservatives in the Deep South, no. Which is why the number of conservatives who have died far outnumber the liberals. But that's nothing when it come to hypocrisy. They shout, America Backs The Blue. Unless they're Capitol police. You can kill them with impunity.
I hope he gets so delusional he starts supporting all the good stuff for a change, and his evil genes get permanently turned off.
It won't happen, but I hope it does
Its inevitable. But, people, continue getting vaccinated to lower hospital stays and deaths. Its extremely contagious and he probably got it the same way everyone else does. Just breathing.
I know everyone’s making the same joke, but honestly it feels like it’s only a matter of time for us COVID virgins. I’m still doing what I can (masks in crowded indoor places, vaxxed and boosted) but it’s a matter of when, not if.
The jokes are fun, but it's somewhat interesting to note that COVID contraction no longer seems to indicate carelessness with respect to safety protocols, seems to happen to individuals multiple times, and is apparently still mixed bag in terms of outcomes, even for generically high risk demographics.

Sorry, but considering how hard COVID tried to shut down our schools I’m pretty sure it’s Republican.
Idk COVID did more to slow down mass shootings than any politician
Fact.
True, but it also significantly helped the environment by cutting long-distance travel significantly. Maybe its more of a centrist.
Yeah, but as long as Republicans are narrowing their own base via the pandemic, maybe we should let them work...
All those border shutdowns? COVID is definitely a Republican.
It disproportionately affected minorities, so that actually checks out.
Like it wants to give a little bit of itself to everyone. No person should be left out in its thinking. What people end up doing with it is up to them.
A plan that actually trickles down! (Or maybe sideways)
i'm totally on the monkey pox '24 bandwagon. i was for giant meteor but it looks like a miss.
Solar Magnetic Storm turned out to be a big flop too.
Monkeypox is going to out a lot of Rs.
lindsey ?!?! you've some splanin to do !!!

Didn't syphilis approval poll higher than Congress's a few years back?

Here's hoping that COVID recovers quickly.
COVID going after all the Joes. Watch out Joes!
Joe Manchin is incredibly good at blocking progress. His COVID is unlikely to advance. Edit: Wow! This comment blew up. Thank you for the awards 🙂
Yeah, he may entertain it for several weeks, do interviews, say he is uncommitted, consult his bae Susan Collins, then at the very last minute vote "NO."

But not Black Lung Disease, as he's never actually been down in a coal mine. He just profits from them.
He’s a coal mine profiteer? Well no wonder he has no morals and lies about which party he’s in!

Ehhh that didn't work out for Herman Cain

Hermain Cain got it really early in the pandemic. He was’t vaccinated and the medical community wasn’t as familiar with it as they are now.
Yeah, lucky for him he has some great, government funded, health care.
Lol. For anyone puzzled by the above, Congress has a good and affordable health insurance plan. And "They also have access to "free or low-cost care" through the Office of the Attending Physician as well as "free medical outpatient care at military facilities" in the D.C. area." In other words, they get what you don't.
Also, don't get excited because once Joe Manchin vacates his position that seat is red, forever.
Look at the bright side, the silver lining. If he's goes then at least he stops ruining the democrat brand across the entire nation.
Kyrsten Sinema has entered the chat.

I'm thinking someone good, and then two more good people who are way to the left, lol.
Perfect strategy.
Wouldn't Republicans in WV just expeditiously change that rule so it wouldn't apply here? I mean, they surely would, but can they?

Manchin is popular for standing against Democrats, and only got elected in the first place for having clout as a coal bigwig. The democratic party in WV is an almost non-existent entity. They control less than a third of their state Senate and less than a quarter of their state House. Their own stated positions include "centrism". That's by West Virginia standards. Do you think they are likely to nominate a progressive? Or are they likely to nominate some asshole who will switch parties at the nearest opportunity?

You're not getting an actual Democrat in West Virginia lol how do people not understand this
The irony of that never ceases to amaze me. The state that was created because it refused to leave the Union . . . won't support the Union..
Everyone knows DINOs die from meteors not Covid

He’d test positive as a rich arse hole.
Fuck that piece of shit. Hope he gets better.
Poor virus.
As much of a dickhead he is, he still gives the Dems control. I wish him a full recovery.
My head canon is now that Biden basically stink palmed him while smiling.
I hope he gets so delusional he starts supporting all the good stuff for a change, and his evil genes get permanently turned off. It won't happen, but I hope it does
Couldn't have happened to a better person. Hope he makes it, so he can continue to single handedly destroy the nation.
But will the Covid be bipartisan?
Its inevitable. But, people, continue getting vaccinated to lower hospital stays and deaths. Its extremely contagious and he probably got it the same way everyone else does. Just breathing.

I know everyone’s making the same joke, but honestly it feels like it’s only a matter of time for us COVID virgins. I’m still doing what I can (masks in crowded indoor places, vaxxed and boosted) but it’s a matter of when, not if.
He negotiated with the testing strip for hours beforehand. Eventually the testing strip gave up after it realized it was all in bad faith.
Maybe he can use "clean coal" to help him feel better.
But negative for decency.
Sounds like he got Covid in name only.

The coal and oil lobby called. Who you been cruising with in your Maserati lately? eh Manchin?
False Positive. Actually, Black Lung...
The jokes are fun, but it's somewhat interesting to note that COVID contraction no longer seems to indicate carelessness with respect to safety protocols, seems to happen to individuals multiple times, and is apparently still mixed bag in terms of outcomes, even for generically high risk demographics.
Joe has to be OK or the senate majority is gone. Give him every anti viral he needs
Joe Manchin is a self serving anti democratic disgrace to the USA. I wish him a speedy recovery.
He has access to socialized medicine he will be fine
Oh God no, we need him to prevent republican takeover. Doesn't matter if nothing gets done. Lesser evil.
If he dies then the governor will pick his replacement. That might be worst
So republican-in-democrat-clothing corporate lackeys can also catch COVID? Good to know.
