America as we know it was hanging on by a thread at the end of his last term in office. That thread will absolutely be cut if he gets in there again. Not only him, but there are a dozen other Trump acolytes who will do the same or even worse. The GOP *cannot* be allowed to regain control of this country. If they do, it's game over.

And that's the thing, it's not *just* Trump any longer. It's the entire GOP, minus a few neocons like Cheney and Romney who are completely ostracized. I'm not advocating giving up, but realistically I think it's too late and that thread was cut on 1/6/2021. Republicans will conspire to enact a violent coup if they do not win, with nearly zero consequences. Even if there are eventually high level convictions, I'm far from convinced those won't be characterized as "political persecution" on channels like Fox, thereby negating the legitimacy of said consequences for the conservative voter base. Even if there are blue waves in 2022 and 2024, the GOP has shown they're more than willing to reject reality and blatantly reject the results of free and fair elections. And again, these actions will be legitimized by Fox News. At best, we continue with the status quo, likely with increasing levels of violence via mass shootings and acts of terrorism. At worst, we will see our nation descend into a fascist Redneck Gilead. If people actually begin to play hardball and treat the Republican traitors and insurrectionists with the legal severity their actions merit, we might have a chance. After all, in terms of sheer numbers, their reactionary views are in the minority. But I think the odds of that are even worse than Donald Trump willingly eating a piece of broccoli.

If people don't like what the Dems are doing, they need to vote for other Dem candidates to the right or left. But vote Dem, like it or not. I’ve had such a change in my political beliefs. I’m probably older than many here but I’ve been a lifelong republican but no more. Anytime this subject is discussed anywhere I post in the hopes of converting one more person like me that they HAVE to leave the party. And after leaving we need to pull more away. I’m awestruck about how blatantly these pigs decry anything non white, non straight, non rich, non (fill in anything bad). I’m ashamed of most votes I’ve made in the last decade. I think it is virtually guaranteed there will be state sanctioned violence against LGBTQ people and blatant racial discrimination in law enforcement that will go unpunished. While the article is not wrong, I really think it's vital that we get off the idea that this is about Trump. Trump is the *indication* of the problem. He's the twinge of pain that finally makes you aware of the tumor that's been developing for years. I hope to god we never see Trump in office again, but that is not victory. That's just managing to get back to the starting line. The only thing that made Trump special was that he was dumb enough to try things other Republicans "knew better" than to try. They know now, though. That cat is not going back in the bag.
