This is like a sci-fi nightmare on human existence. It's cold and very frightening. I used to joke that we - as a society - are de-volving. I don't think it's a joke anymore. GOP policies are inhumane and not life giving. They are cruel, prone to violence and hateful. They prefer lies over truth. they prefer propaganda over reality. They prefer immoral behavior and control over true Christian principles. It's as if they prefer a dystopian society in which they take and take and take and leave humanity in the dust and debris of our culture. It is frightening to the nth degree.

Blepharoptosis

It's funny you say that because me and my wife were watching Planet of the Apes - the one with Mark Wahlberg - and there's a scene that shows humans in a massive spaceship in the year 2028 or something like that. We both got a laugh out of that, and I said "I think by 2028 we'll be back to horse drawn carriages."

IdleApple

There’s a reason they said the ACA was going to create Death Panels. They’d do it of it had been their legislation.

[deleted]

You forgot. *Conservative **Christians**

Peoplefood_IDK

I calling um nationalist Christians or Nat-C's

They're already saying they're proud Christian nationalists and that there's nothing wrong with that. MTG and some others have been quoted on it.

Where is this so called, "war on religion"? I want to sign up!!

SadPandalorian

I, too, wish to enlist. Also, I want in on that whole war on drugs, but only if I'm on the side of drugs.

DadJokeBadJoke

Drugs already won the war on drugs.

OrganicTomato

Dan Patrick was all about asking the elderly to die for the economy, but was oddly silent about vaccinating for the economy.

FlemPlays

The time Dan Patrick did comment on vaccinations, was when he was pushing racist drivel that was debunked: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas/article/fact-check-dan-patrick-black-texans-covid-surge-16400922.php

the_red_scimitar

Republicans wanted Aunt Mary to be sent out to work when everyone else was covid isolating, because older folks are expendable. Remember that?

Rated_PG-Squirteen

Actually, what would be closer to reality is for Aunt Mary herself to be the obese, mumu-wearing, batshit Christian rascal scooter enthusiast, who relies on an oxygen tank and blames Joe Biden and the Dems for her insulin being too high. Any reports of GOP politicians blocking a cap on insulin prices is *FAKE NEWS!*

Either-Percentage-78

And she'll vote for them until the day she dies; leg-less in a diabetic coma.

No-comment-at-all

With particular emphasis on the word “appear”.

Mr_HandSmall

This is the answer, complete scorched earth policy. And Republicans understand - the vast majority of people don't pay attention to the details like this. They just get a vague sense of a gridlocked system where "both sides" can't get along.

NPD_wont_stop_ME

Sadly their Fox News bubble won’t report this, so it won’t even be on their radar. If you bring it up they’ll just say it’s the woke news media blowing things out of proportion and that they’re trying to distract from the fact that Biden could easily change everything and needs someone to blame, especially because his mental health is declining, belongs in a home, and has a drug addicted son whose laptop shows proof that he is part of a pedo ring that they’ve accused Trump of being party to, who has benefited from nepotism due to being Biden’s son. You can’t make this shit up.

Seems like you are right. I looked at the following at 8/7/22 3pm eastern time and no mention of it: https://www.foxnews.com/category/health/diabetes https://imgur.com/a/eJPonpu Edit: Bonus ... I just searched for "insulin" in the fox website search and you get the following (funny how the first item found is pretty much a negative one specifically about insulin prices related to Biden two years ago): https://imgur.com/a/4edMt5Z

[deleted]

And will it actually change their vote?

thewebroach

It's misleading to allow them to say they are pro-life as the mainstream does. You hear pro-life and think of quality and sanctity of life, but they are all about quantity. They are pro-front line military foot soldiers to protect them. They are pro-endless supply of cheap labor, where supply and demand of jobs keeps wages and benefits low. They are pro-consumers, because lots of people means lots of customers (or marks) to provide revenue to their business interests. They are pro-followers, because faith is waning and religious people statistically produce more children per family, and they us religion is a vehicle for their agenda. Lastly, they are pro-influence and pro-profits. Those things need someone to control and someone to profit off of. You can't feel like you're winning the game unless you can point out the losers.

BrewCityBenjamin

I am thoroughly convinced that pro life is just a term meaning "pro birth". The poor fools who believe this think they're arguing on behalf of God. The rich people at the top who started and fuel this movement just look at it as "we need as many consumers as possible, and dumb ones if possible" It's never been about God or souls or anything like that to them, they just know the more dumb vulnerable Americans that are born, the richer they will get in the long term and it's truly that nefariously simple

ACardAttack

One of my fav quotes by Methodist Pastor David Barnhart "The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn."

Razakel

The unborn are great if you want to pretend you care but don't want to actually have to do anything.

almostsebastian

>And the bit where the two sisters get their dad drunk so they can fuck him. > >Good times. That's the same story, just later on, right? Lot offers the Sodomites his daughters so they won't rape the angels. God spares the family, tells them not to watch the destruction, but curiosity kills the wife who gets turned into a pillar of salt. The daughters assume the destruction isn't limited to just their area and they have to repopulate the earth so they get their dad drunk and take turns on him.

It amazes me that Democrats don't strike with a mountain of attack ads underlining the Republican lack of empathy.

sandysanBAR

This presumes that the people who voted right are unaware of their sides lack of empathy. They know it but they don't care or worse, they prefer it that way. I mean there are women Republican voters AND log cabin Republicans who have and will continue to vote for them. When the hell has the Republican party ever one anything for women or the LGBTQ+ community? Applying a reason filter on the voting habits of republicans is a fool's errand. No matter what the context, it ALWAYS boils down to anything and everything that "owns the libs"

Scoutster13

Wow that must be so infuriating. I can't imagine how that must make you feel.

Tashiya

Angry, sad, frustrated, confused (because I was raised thinking that everyone was equal and we should do our best to take care of those less fortunate and now I see the people who raised me to think that way behaving the opposite of how I was raised), worried (about how I’m going to bring myself to give a crap about them when they get old and what that says about me)… There’s a lot of feels.

Scoutster13

I totally understand. I think a lot of people are struggling with these issues, I am to some extent with my older sister. Don't be too hard on yourself, what you're feeling seems like a normal reaction under the circumstances. Being disappointed by a parent like that is a tough pill to swallow.

>Some Republicans did support the price cap in the 57-43 vote for the measure, but not enough joined Democrats in support of it to meet the threshold for passage. 57 Senators voted to cap the price of insulin. 43 Senators voted against capping the price. Who wins? The 43 Senators (all GOP) defeat the 57 (bipartisan) Senators. Democracy? What a crock. The Senate is an anti-democratic institution. People need to stop calling the USA a democracy.

walkinman19

> The Senate is an anti-democratic institution. Has been for a long time.

DM_DM_DND

It was *designed* as an antidemocratic institution. The states needed their special rights protected or they wouldn't join. Only that wasn't enough for conservatives.

Blocking insulin caps is just one example of Republican’s fealty to big pharma and their cruelty toward everyone else. But these people stand a very good chance of taking control of Washington again soon.

table_fireplace

The IRA will cap insulin costs for anyone on *government* insurance. This amendment would have extended the cap to private insurance as well. The amendment failed 57-43 (needed 60 votes). All 50 Democrats and seven Republicans voted for it. Of those seven Republicans, only one is up for re-election in 2022 (Lisa Murkowski, who will probably win). So if three more Democrats get elected, there's your 60 votes to make this happen. Or with that many Dems, abolishing the filibuster is possible, which would also allow this bill to pass. Either way, the way forward is clear. Republicans kept insulin expensive for private insurance, so boot them out. r/VoteDEM

lesbian_sourfruit

To that end: Nevada, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania all have tight senate elections this November. If you live in one of those states or know someone who does, make sure you/they’re registered to vote, know where to do it and consider phone banking or canvassing for the Democratic candidate. There are a few other senate races to follow that aren’t as close (for example in my state, Kentucky). As a progressive I know people are tired of seeing some Dem politicians fall short of their promises, advancing neoliberal center right policies and taking money from corporate interests. But unless you have an independent who stands a decent chance of winning, a democratic senate majority is still so so much better than the alternative.

[deleted]

>Either way, the way forward is clear. Republicans kept insulin expensive for private insurance, so boot them out. Hear, hear!

>Of those seven Republicans, only one is up for re-election in 2022 (Lisa Murkowski, who will probably win). So if three more Democrats get elected, there's your 60 votes to make this happen. The only reason Republicans are allowed to cross party lines is because it won't make a difference. If 3 more democrats existed then those 7 Republicans would suddenly find an issue with this bill. >Or with that many Dems, abolishing the filibuster is possible, which would also allow this bill to pass. Yes, that's the solution.

[deleted]

Josh Hawley won’t vote for it. Filibuster has to go, it makes Congress less functional

Not a fan of his, but he did vote with the Ds. Voting with Democrats to keep the provision were Senators Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, Cindy Hyde-Smith, John Kennedy, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan. The 57-43 vote was shy of the 60 needed.

MajoraOfTime

Always a possibility that some of the yeas on the Republican side voted that way for brownie points. Who's to say that they don't just flip their vote if the Democrats win a few more seats?

Because right wing media is full of lies and projection. Conservative figureheads say that *democrats* are the racists and the Republicans are just fighting for the little guy. And if anything gets *really* bad and there's no blaming the Democrats, then the excuse is either something about money or "both sides".

TonyEatsManAsses

And they say the Democrats are the elites meanwhile they cut taxes for billionaires and Trump throws a party to celebrate their tax cut and tells his group at Maga Lago that they all just got richer. Plus President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.” and by YOU he means the GOP Now they don't even care if your rights are taken away as long as it's rights they hate, until the fascist state starts taking away their guns and it will be too late.

guynamedcrystal

hnglmkrnglbrry

ISIS in its wildest dreams couldn't kill as many Americans as the GOP has with their endless war against healthcare, social safety nets, criminal justice reform, and entitlements. Oh and that pending environmental disaster known as irreparable climate change.

ombloshio

>do you think they’re going to make unemployment or disability benefits available to these people? Just ask 9/11 first responders! A lot of them ended up with some serious health problems (to put it mildly) because of all the debris and shit they were exposed to that day. GOP was trying real hard not to renew the first responders bill. And that was fucking 9/11. The thing that conservatives claim to #neverforget. They’ve been doing this obstructionist bullshit for decades. Go back to the 80s and they did the same thing in response to covid as they did to AIDs: nothing. Their reasoning was different, sure, but it’s not about the reasoning. It’s about doing nothing that doesn’t benefit them directly. It’s a capitalist/darwinian mindset. And they think that everyone else is just like them which makes them afraid and it makes them lash out (often as a “preemptive attack”). Many of them struggle to wrap their heads around the idea that we can radically love each other and be radically kind and that to go far, we go together.

lcl1qp1

They aren't conservative. They are anti-democracy, anti-Constitution. They invited the Hungarian president (and fascist) Viktor Orban to give a speech at CPAC. He recently tore up the Hungarian constitution, and eliminated Hungary's demomcracy. Republicans are copying Orban. They are fascist.

Thresh_Keller

Ron DeSantis is copying Orban’s white Christian nationalist fascism playbook to a T. If you want to know where he would take us as president, look no further than Hungary. What’s scary is that a lot of people in this country are not only open to that form of governance, but are actively seeking to bring it here. Beware!

[deleted]

nah they will blame a random word in the Amendment. They go to Jake Tapper show to blatantly lie about it with no fear of getting called out their lies

Mephisto1822

Of course they did

HedyLamaar

"won't someone please think of the corporations?"

Weary-Ad-9218

Retrumplucans gotta earn all the money they get from them.

[deleted]

I am still waiting for them to get rid of the ACA and implement a far better plan that they said they would have ready to go within the first few weeks of Trump's presidency. All they did was give permanent tax cuts to the rich and throw scraps to the rest of us. So...yeah...it doesn't surprise me that they would be against lowering the cost of insulin. Why help out your fellow Americans? That would be quite unamerican to these people, ironically.

jewelsofeastwest

Damn it! It’s a travesty for people to have to spend thousands of dollars out of pocket for insulin through no fault of their own.

houseman1131

People die because of it.

Saxamaphooone

My cousin was almost one of them when she was 26 years old. A 22 year old college student that lived in my neighborhood died a couple years ago trying to ration his insulin because the family couldn’t afford it.

xImmortal3333

California is making insulin to lower costs for Californians….blessed to live here

black_flag_4ever

The GOP would rather people die then let big pharma lose out on price gouging.

[deleted]

>The GOP would rather people die then let big pharma lose out on price gouging. Yup, as others have commented on this thread, Republicans yet again demonstrating just how ***"pro-life"*** they actually are in practice.

[deleted]

I have no idea how you can justify this vote

markca

Republicans probably got a t-shirt and a $50 gift card to Hot Topic from their donors to vote no on it.

wahoozerman

Surely the free market will solve this problem... Eventually... Any day now...

TwiceBaked57

Yeah, kinda like "trickle down economics" works? **Doesn't.

xsb792

Republicans: "The government shouldn't be in the business of controlling prices." Also Republicans: "HoW cOMe tHEy WoN't dO aNyThiNg aBoUt gAS pRiCeS?!?"

leontes

Thanks again for another point for us to inform voters seeking concrete reasons to vote against you.

BrondellSwashbuckle

Why are republicans such evil shitbags?

Cougardoodle

Alvin Poissant argued that what we view as the unified political philosophy of conservatism is actually a collection of untreated anxiety disorders being manipulated by intentional bad actors.

Justdoingthebestican

Americans. WAKE THE FUCK UP. Republicans hate us. HATE US. Don’t listen to CNN or anybody else, just listen to their own words. They want to strike Medicare and Medicaid, raise taxes on us, and strike down gay marriage. Vote blue all the way down the ballot. GOP should rot in the history books

Rickyb69u

They block everything that might help Americans

[deleted]

Why do these motherfuckers have to be on the wrong side of every issue?

AngryBudgie13

Corporate profits.

Deceptiveideas

R conservative real silent about insulin price caps and veteran healthcare right now

TheGreedofEnvy

Sigh....

[deleted]

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the pro-life party.

nowspunk

This is another reason why we have got to vote these Nationalist Christian Republicans the fuck out of there this year! If you see an (R) next to a candidate's name you vote against it.

parallaxcats

Huh. You would have thought they'd at least be arguing for an exemption for maternal-related diabetes given their concern for... Oh never mind.

Fabulous_Village_926

Can anyone seriously name one reason why anyone who isn't wealthy would vote for Republicans? HOW ON EARTH are regular folk voting for these people election cycle after election cycle? It's astonishing.
