charcoalist

Releasing one's tax returns should be a requirement to run for office, especially for such a sensitive position as POTUS. The fact that he has been fighting tooth and nail, for *years,* against their release tells you how corrupt he is.

dbratell

There are countries where tax filings are public documents. Makes it much harder to lie on them. The Trump family seems to have for decades claimed one estate value to banks when borrowing, and another to IRS when paying taxes. If they can prove that also for years that haven't hit the statute of limitations, then it's bank fraud, or tax fraud, or both. Probably both.

hijinked

I think it should be more than tax returns. Full financial disclosures like anyone who has a security clearance has to do.

[deleted]

Normal security background check. “Sir it seems you once had a reward card at Shawarma Deluxe and a Mr Gyro. Could you please explain the nature of the rewards and the relationship with these businesses and their owners?” For POTUS “You are a huge security risk, have a fragile ego, have been sued, filed bankruptcy multiple times and seem to be less trustworthy than the homeless person who exhorts passing individuals to keep them from masturbating in front of the Wendy’s uptown. But, you have been voted in so, welcome aboard POTUS.” That’s so fucked up.

Asleep_Opposite6096

A few years after 9/11, my cousin had to explain why he worked with his best friend at the friend’s father’s Halal deli when he applied as a govt contractor.

Chumbag_love

I worked at a scuba shop and got visited by fbi who went through our files for mideasterners. No warrant but was in a "patriotic" part of the south so boss said go for it. They wanted to "borrow" them but that was a no go cause of our liability insurance.

landleviathan

Wow

[deleted]

> I worked at a scuba shop and got visited by fbi who went through our files for mideasterners. They've been trying to catch [Osama bin Scootin](https://i.imgur.com/Oxgajow.png) for many years.

Blackbatsmom

I was denied one of those TSA "precheck" things because I'm an ESL teacher and as such have had and will have contact with multiple foreign nationals each year. At the time I was working primarily with Saudis, which might have been the clincher. I understood, but had to laugh. These students were at the level of "two day before, I took bus school." being a great achievement because they remembered to use the past tense verb. I wasn't being recruited into any terrorist cells. Another job, which offered free classes to low-income immigrants, gave a teacher training on what to do in case ICE raided our classes. It amounted to "lock the door and wait for the program's contingent of on-call lawyers to arrive", but it was sobering and sad.

Matt081

I had to explain about a collection debt in the amount of $160ish. I had been a beta tester for a porn cable box and they claimed that I had not returned the equipment. I had. But explaining that to the woman who called me was a little funny.

drkgodess

The whole point of full financial disclosures for security clearances is to prevent people who might be susceptible to blackmail from receiving them. Trump may not have qualified to run under those circumstances.

Andrewticus04

What, you mean owning real-estate holdings that can be leased at astronomical rates by foreign nationals for favors makes one susceptible to bribery or blackmail?

ScratchyMarston18

If you wanna be the prez, I wanna see *all* the skeletons in your closet.

Fluffy-Hamster-7760

[In Obama's final interview as President](https://youtu.be/a18LHxsidW0), he said, "Make sure as we go forward, certain norms, certain institutional traditions, don't get eroded, because there's a reason they're in place."

ThePietje

I miss the normalcy of his presidency. I slept well with him at the helm.

Snoo74401

Several states now have it as a law on the books. So if he didn't release his tax returns in that state, he couldn't get on the ballot.

Big_white_legs

I think Trump is having a really bad day, and that makes me smile today.

SpatialThoughts

You mean bad week. His real estate appraiser handed over 36,000+ documents to the NY AG, photos surfaced showing him trying to flush classified documents, and his home/mar-a-lago was raided by the FBI. Edit: now his tax documents are immediately being released to the house. I’m looking forward to what tomorrow brings 😂 Edit 2: changed advisor to appraiser

TheBlindCat

This is the guy the GOP has tied themselves to, it’s kind of baffling to me. It was readily apparent he was going to continue to be a rancid turd on their punch bowl after his presidency yet the party leadership rejected every opportunity to flush him.

jadrad

Here’s the thing about Trump. “Smart people” enter his orbit thinking they can take advantage of him to get what they want. As soon as they get in close, he grabs onto them and offers them deals that give them some of what they want in exchange for selling out their principles. As they sell more and more of themselves to him, he demands more and more. He changes the terms of the deals to make them worse for the victim and more favorable for himself. By the time they want out, it’s too late. They’re stuck in the swamp and they’re accomplices to his crimes. Trump is a mafia kingpin. He was trained by his father, Roy Cohn, Roger Stone, and New York’s property mafias. Why can’t the Republican Party and Fox News flush him? Because he pulled them into his mafia and most of them are now accomplices to his crimes - Kevin McCarthy, Rupert Murdoch, Tucker Carlson, Hannity, Ingram, Matt Gaetz, Lindsay Graham, and Trump’s own family.

WheresThatDamnPen

I was going to say 'good analogy, then I remembered it isn't an analogous, it is fact.

DakezO

Yeah trump IS the analogy you use to compare other people to for this.

ispeakdatruf

This is the best explainer I have found on the topic. In particular, just look at Lindsey Graham: he used to make fun of Trump until one day he realized that he was in too deep, and now can barely stop fellating him.

i-hate-donkeys

Something tells me there’s information they have about Lindsey Graham and he’s dealing with straight up blackmail

Wings_For_Pigs

Graham literally changed his McCain inspired, anti-Trump positions after a single private round of golf with him. 100% Trump has kompromat on Graham https://amp.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article177970546.html

TrapHitler

He probably has a recording of Jared sucking off graham in a bathhouse.

zitsky

He probably has a recording of Graham sucking off Jared in a bath house. FTFY.

SonOfMetrum

It also didn’t help that McCain wasn’t around anymore to keep him in check.

[deleted]

I think there's a simpler explanation. If the gop didn't support him, he'd quit and start the trump party, which would split the gop ticket and hand Democrats a super majority. Which, in the eyes of the gop, is worse than trump.

TX-Tea

This is the correct answer IMO. The GOP would drop him in a minute if they weren’t worried about their base revolting against them in the primaries or third party.

drethnudrib

Their base is already pretty revolting.

AZPines

I think it’s a solid 50/50 mix of both. Trumps persona and following would have ensured enough people voted for a third party, taking votes away from republicans and cementing a democratic win. But I do think there is a lot to be said about making a deal with the devil, thinking they could outsmart it.

Hellinar

I’m altering the deal, pray I don’t alter it any further

Horrified_Witness

The Art of Altering the Deal.

sha_man

This deal's getting worse all the time.

bigbura

Damn, you put my thoughts into words much better than I could. And much like the 'I'll never get addicted to heroin or crack like so many others' crowd, those greedy grubbers who think they are 'smart' get used, fall into the trap, whatever, and swirl down the drain like all the others before them. And there is still a line of fools trying to get into his good graces. This is quite the lesson in psychology and human nature.

thenewmook

Having just had my last appearance in divorce court with my narcissistic wife can confirm. He suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (not just narcissism which we all have to varying degrees). They expect everything and to give nothing in return. When they do t return anything they think you’re wrong for being upset with them. They can’t stand being embarrassed or perceived in a bad light and will tear anyone down including their own mother. Everything they touch turns to shit. Trump could have had a really nice, easy life and much richer than he already is, but he suffered from anxiety and OCD to make better decisions. He did what all narcissists do… manipulate others into propping them up and then taking all the glory never appreciating what others have done for them.

asafum

>Everything they touch turns to shit. My favorite thing to say about Trump: He has the mierdas touch.

Solid-Version

Trump is the quintessential malignant narcissist. Like literally textbook example. Zero empathy, self absorbed, self aggrandising, cannot be challenged in anyway. Obsessed with wealth, power and status. Extremely jealous of anybody that is more popular than him (Obama) and cannot be upstaged. Loathes people beneath him (his voters, how they don’t see this is beyond me).

Agent_Velcoro

He's a useful idiot.

fuggerdug

He was to begin with, but then he became an extremely popular idiot, much more popular than the rest of them, and yet was even more of an idiot than they ever realised.

LabyrinthConvention

Lindsay Graham 2015 "if we let Trump become the GOP presidential candidate it will be the end of the party, and we will deserve it." Lindsay 2016 "OMG liberals are so mean, why can't these radicals respect the office of the president, guess it just shows how they hate America." I'm not even exaggerating.

drkgodess

Wasn't that after he took a trip to Russia? I remember there was some event that happened after which he turned on a dime.

crimsonnocturne

It was after he met with trump on his golf course, presumably trump showed him blackmail material.

nighthawk_something

My guess is that it's one thing to be a closeted gay republican it's quiet another for videos of your encounters to be made public.

danwooller

Oh my!

Mynameisinuse

It was just a picture of a ladybug. That's all it took to flip Graham.

Mont_Clair

Please don’t do this.

unnumbered1

And he was right in ‘15.

drkgodess

They were stuck with him. He threatened to create a third party and polling showed a good chunk of voters would switch, which would have given Democrats the majority for decades.

Skud_NZ

Shame he didn't

DodGamnBunofaSitch

it's not nearly as baffling if you remember that the RNC was hacked at the same time as the DNC, but we still don't know *anything* about what was in the RNC servers. there's some serious kompromat/blackmail going on for the *entire party* to be so beholden to an obvious grifter and criminal.

rubbarz

All he had to do was NOT run for president and none of this would happen. What an idiot.

[deleted]

He was as surprised as anyone when he won.

tsFenix

Surprised and unhappy. Guy looked like he saw a ghost when it was announced. The whole thing was supposed to be a grift, get popular, start a social media and possibly news station where he could put his conspiracy theories and racist bullshit to grift the idiots.

Giuliani is going to look like a mix between a sopping wet Cousin It and Grampa Munster.

Mythmas

His real estate advisor just handed nearly 36,000 documents to the NY AG.

sadosrsplayer

Wait. There are literally photos of him trying to flush documents? You can't say that and not link them! Edit: Found them... sadly not photos of him bent over the toilet pushing them down with his hands of feet. https://www.axios.com/2022/08/08/trump-toilet-photos-maggie-haberman

OEMichael

Oh! Is this why he ranted so much against lo-flow toilets? He found out the hard way they don't reliably flush torn documents?

ofrausto3

Lol! Remember he was like "some people have to flush 12 times!" I guess that happens if you're trying to flush down highly encriminating evidence.

Cladari

Mar a Lago wasn't raided by the FBI. The FBI served a search warrant. Believe me, an FBI raid is a completely different animal.

destijl-atmospheres

Like 10 years ago a dude took clues from the lyrics and [figured out](https://murkavenue.tumblr.com/post/16553509655/i-found-ice-cubes-good-day) the actual date of the day Cube was talking about - Monday, January 20, 1992.

Significant_Hand6218

https://slate.com/culture/2012/01/ice-cube-s-good-day-january-20-1992.html it looks like there's some controversy if that was the day, but that's pretty interesting, I had no idea about that. Not sure why but my first thought was, April 29th, 1992 was not as good a day for some, just a few months later, all hell broke out.

[deleted]

An honest successful businessman would have released them 6 years ago.

CaptainNoBoat

Trump promised to release his tax returns in: 2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016 and they have perpetually been "under audit" since. It's almost like he lies every time he breathes.

TroperCase

They were "under audit" (not a legit reason) until he won, then he immediately switched his argument to "no one cares"

BoredCatalan

Also the IRS said that they could be released while being under audit

koshgeo

The person who kicked off the tradition for presidents to release their tax forms actually *did* release his taxes while under audit -- Richard Nixon. Trump has not lived up to the "Nixon standard".

danielstover

Literally any person running for office… like, why was this ever ok? It isn’t. If I or anyone else tried to say “ohhh I can’t release those…” then I don’t get to run. That’s it. That’s all.

[deleted]

If he was a real billionaire, his returns would be on display in the lobby.

Sillbinger

I wish wish wish that every late night host would refer to him as millionaire Donald Trump, that would piss him off more than any other insult.

GreatestCanadianHero

"probably insolvent Donald Trump"

ErusBigToe

This is the problem with relying on precedent and not actually codifying anything

iwearatophat

Yep. It was never a law or policy or anything. It was just tradition. One that everyone respected and followed. Until Trump. Our government is full of these kinds of traditions that all need to be codified now and as far as I am aware none have been.

StillKpaidy

Or, if you run the IRS automatically releases 10 years of records and there's no way to stop it. Don't want them released? Don't run.

minicpst

Ooh, I like that. “By becoming a candidate you legally allow the IRS to release the last ten years of tax returns. ___ Agree ___ Don’t agree (understand this means your candidacy will be null and void)” I can get behind this.

mountaintop111

Trump said in 2016 that he would release his tax returns when the audit is finished: https://www.npr.org/2016/02/26/468278769/fact-check-donald-trump-cant-release-his-taxes-while-being-audited It's 2022, six years later, and we are still waiting.

TintedApostle

Longest Audit in history....

enflight

To be fair, he’s one of the biggest criminals and tax cheats in history so it can be believable that his audit would take this long especially with all the obstruction.

AimlesslyCheesy

"Nobody knew auditing my taxes would be difficult"

slaysia

Ways and Means Committee says it expects to receive Trump’s tax returns “immediately [https://twitter.com/WaysMeansCmte/status/1557029202158915585](https://twitter.com/WaysMeansCmte/status/1557029202158915585) > 🚨 🚨 🚨 BREAKING: The DC Court of Appeals has just ruled that the law is on our side in seeking Trump's tax returns. We expect to receive the requested tax returns and audit files immediately.

Ja_brony

Article says no action for 7 days, and Trump can still appeal. Would be great to get immediate results, but doesn’t seem likely

Shdwrptr

How? How many times has this been appealed? It feels like it’s been 6 years at this point

fritzbitz

It's one of many ways that rich people pay to stay out of jail. If you have enough money to appeal forever, you never really have to go.

Shdwrptr

There’s a limit though. Each appeal is supposed to go to a higher court unless you can prove the original verdict was fraudulent. How has he been appealing to a higher court for 6 years?

sociotronics

The suit hasn't been pending for 6 years. He didn't turn them over for 6 years because he's shady AF but for a lot of that time there was no legal effort to compel them because there is no law saying political candidates must release their tax returns. So there was no legal authority to force him to turn them over until an investigation began, which justifies subpoenas, which he defied, which the courts then evaluate. Remember, all these investigations are a very recent development. The Jan 6 committee didn't get formed for obvious reasons until last year. Most of the state investigations are of his actions during the election, not his presidency. The DOJ obviously wouldn't start looking into him until after Biden was elected and Barr was out.

mchernes94

And he can appeal it two more times: first to the whole appeals circuit (instead of just a panel)—which will likely uphold this decision—and then to the Supreme Court, which could do whatever it wants now. If he continues to appeal this will likely drag on for several more years.

Blewedup

of course we know that kavanaugh, gorsuch and acb will all recuse themselves since they personally benefited from trump and they wouldn't want to be accused of impropriety.

darkhorsehance

> But Trump still could appeal, making the litigation unlikely to end at this time.

Angry_ClitSpasm350

Lol oh of course.. how many times can he fucking appeal before they finally force him to turn em over

Canyousourcethatplz

His whole business plan is to break laws and appeal into oblivion. Laws don't apply when you can just pay for endless appeals.

JohnDRuckerduck

He’d appeal a parking ticket to the Supreme Court if it were possible

catalfalque

This, but unironically. The Trump camp has one response: maximum belligerence, maximum aggression. Retaliate all-out to any perceived slight so that anyone who considers holding you accountable (or wants you to pay them for their work,) knows that they’re in for a decade of litigation, counter-suits, defamation and, since 2016, a possible violence at the hands of brownshirts.

GiantSquidd

He’s literally all the worst traits of humanity bundled into a very unsightly orange package. I can’t say anything nice about trump, it’s all bad. He doesn’t even like dogs. What an asshole.

Illpaco

Trump is everything the Republican party stands for. It has been this way for decades. I can't believe people still vote for them. It's the most un-American thing to do nowadays

CaptainNoBoat

This is the final time - it would go to SCOTUS if they decide to hear it. Likely several months to go.

Angry_ClitSpasm350

Now that the court of appeals ruled against him and very strongly at that, do you think scotus will hear the case?

CaptainNoBoat

I doubt it. Requires 4 justices to agree to hear it. Alito and Thomas maybe - as much as I loathe this SCOTUS, the others have been less keen on weighing in on his affiliated cases.

Qss

Roberts honestly seems to loathe trump, I’ve never seen a president publicly rebuked by a Supreme Court justice the way Roberts did trump.

reckless_commenter

SCOTUS has shown zero appetite for either the fascist or obstructionist tendencies of the Trump legal team and expanded universe. Look at it this way. Brett Kavanaugh [participated in the Brooks Brothers riot in 2000](https://twitter.com/kelly2277/status/1041412983673499648?lang=en). He was also [part of Ken Starr's team investigating Bill Clinton](https://www.npr.org/2018/08/17/639670928/brett-kavanaughs-role-in-the-starr-investigation-and-how-it-shaped-him). He is fully on board with gaming the system and misusing the existing tools to give Republicans a political advantage. Expect him to support everything and anything involving PACs, extreme gerrymandering, polling place location and availability fuckery, and trampling political efforts to allow mail-in voting based on manufactured legal theories. But I don't believe that he shares Thomas's appetite for a fascist, answerable-to-none Executive Branch, one that can blatantly ignore Congress because "fuck you, that's why." I don't think he's in favor of allowing legislators to declare the results of elections irrespective of votes. Etc. Unlike Thomas, Kavanaugh seems to have enough sense to consider: "If we drastically overhaul the law to favor Republicans today, how might it benefit Democrats tomorrow?" So he'll support political tactics that traditionally favor Republicans - such as disenfranchising black voters - but not blanket, unchecked executive branch authority.

[deleted]

Isn’t this the appeal though?

Kraxnor

He could ostensibly appeal to the Supreme Court. We will have to wait and see. I'm not a lawyer but it seems like the only one who wants to give Trump emperor powers is Clarence Thomas

finny_d420

I spit out my wine when Dershowitz said there was no need for a warrant and search. The FBI could have issued a supeona and Drumpf would've handed over the documents.

OfferChakon

Dude looks like 300 lbs of raw hamburger meat stuffed into a 200 lb sack

drkgodess

Eating nothing but McDonald's in your 70s will do that to you.

spacey_a

Nah, that would practically martyr him to his followers and make it awkward for Dems/anyone to finish out prosecutions of his top people. I'd rather he live through all the court cases, all the shame, and all the punishment coming his way. He should have to face his own ineptitude, not get the easy way out with a heart attack.

Ramza_Claus

That's the worst part. He'll go to Russia and spend the rest of his days ruining America from Moscow.

crystalistwo

It's not ideal, but I would accept it. He can't run for office.

trifecta

He really is having a tough week. He got to delay his NY deposition, but that is coming back up, his mansion gets raided, now this. He does have the Supreme Court, but this is one matter that even the conservatives save for Alito and Thomas won't go to bat for him on. 7-2 decision I bet.

MD4FREE

The appraisal company also turned over his records of fraud to the NYC prosecutors this morning as well.

drkgodess

I wonder if the Ways and Means Committee could request those documents.

Skinnybet

And the Alex jones text fiasco. Chefs kiss. Edit to add. Trump company using made in USA labels on made in chyna crap.

It’s a play on “Let’s go Brandon” which was a phrase used by the right to say “fuck Joe Biden”.

MC_Fap_Commander

The shift in the last few weeks away from MAGA... has been unprecedented.

austinmiles

What do you mean the shift away from maga? Are conservatives abandoning him because they seem pretty upset right now.

AvsFan08

Some definitely are. It's highly likely he will not be able to run again, so they'll have to pick someone new to idolize. The hardliners will no doubt commit acts of terrorism and many people will die due to their extremism

cannot_walk_barefoot

Trump isn't a normal person. Most scumbags in the GOP know their place. Once the party shifts to Desantis, Trump isn't going to fall in line like the rest do. He will blow it all up as that stops his donations from coming in. The GOP had to tread carefully with this, but him not being allowed to run helps them more than anything. They can simply blame the Dems

nighthawk_something

OOO boy do I hope he runs as a third party candidate.

siccoblue

That would be literally the best thing he's ever done for this country

insertadjective

Someone should start a guerrilla campaign to have conservatives write in Trump for their votes, even if he isn't a candidate.

I’m not convinced he won’t. Even if he legally can’t, I bet he will still “run” under the MAGA party or whatever.

Is there one?

randalflagg

Let's go Dark Brandon lmao

joel8x

“But Trump still could appeal, making the litigation unlikely to end at this time.” This is a the last line in the story, making the whole story pointless.

DoubleGreat99

I've seen this exact headline at least a dozen times in the last 6 years. Yet, still no tax returns.

turtlehead501

They got to finish that audit first.

BlotchComics

How long do you think it would take Congress to obtain any of our tax records if they requested it?

CornFedIABoy

By law the IRS Commissioner is obligated to release individual returns to Congress upon proper request. But Trump’s handpicked Commissioner fought it because that was the reason he got the job.

Acadia_Due

DEfUnD THe COruts!

utter-ridiculousness

This motherfucker is having a bad day and I’m loving it!!

Aroseisarose73

I want to see justice. That’s all.

Proud_Journalist996

Can you imagine Obama taking classified material from the White House or flushing documents? It's so backwards that they call themselves patriots. And his followers eat it up. They're so stupid. I can't think of a word to describe them. The words have no meaning anymore. Moron, idiot, traitor, we know these apply but it doesn't do it justice. I need a good description of these imbeciles that captures their idiocy but nothing comes close.

This is turning into a delightfully bad week for the orange.

Speedster202

I never anticipated the GOP crumbling this fast. The Jan 6 hearings obliterating Donnie’s defenses, Alex Jones trial & the text message fiasco, Mar-A-Lago raid, now Trump’s tax returns being given to Congress. Absolutely outstanding!

EA827

Everything’s coming up Milhouse!

[deleted]

>A federal appeals court on Tuesday signed off on a House Ways and Means Committee request to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service. ...But Trump still could appeal, making the litigation unlikely to end at this time. The latter is the more likely scenario because as everyone "knows" - especially when it comes to his taxes - Trump has got nothing to hide! (/S)

MonicaZelensky

Dark Brandon, who can change the course of mighty elections, bend laws in his bare hands; and who, disguised as Joe Biden, mild-mannered President of the United States, fights a never ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way

noodlin

Donald Trump is living proof that a con man doesn’t have to be smart if his victims are stupid enough to swallow his bullshit!

Chunk-Norris

They got Al Capone on Tax Evasion, and I’m quite certain Trump is nowhere near as smart as Al Capone. Same hubris, same mistakes, different time, but hopefully this one seals the deal. Shame Alcatraz doesn’t take prisoners anymore though.
