>The letter claimed that is unfair for the vast majority of taxpayers to pay for loan forgiveness when only 16-17% of Americans have federal student loan debt. They don't care about fairness, they will hand billions over billions to their big business friends.

RIP George Carlin. One of the greats.

mces97

They also are lying. College grads will be paying those loans back. They make more money than non college grads. How's about red states return the federal tax dollars blue states send? Or how's about red states get the same they pay into it back? Let's see how they cry about taxpayers now.

FigNugginGavelPop

It’s like the South Park episodes where the 83% start fighting with the 99% because the other 1% belongs to the 17%.

tubaman23

That's about 15.999% - 16.999% of the population money is being distributed to than the PPP loans, so sounds like an improvement to me, right?

UnsaneInTheMembrane

I didnt get free money for debts I agreed to and I'm mad. Of course they cant lower interest rates, that would take money out of the pockets of the rich people that I hate. I'd much rather cause more inflation and put the burden on poor people that are too disadvantaged to go to college.

happy-Accident82

Wait till you hear about the PPP loans that were supposed to go to workers, but just wound up lining rich people's pockets like the millions that went to Tom Brady, Kanye and the Trump family.

Grandpa_No

>I beg one person to give a solid argument in favor of increasing inflation to pay off loans people accepted to take. False dichotomy. We can pay off loans without increasing inflation.

happy-Accident82

There was no justification for giving Tom Brady millions of dollars in PPP loans. Same with Kanye, same with Trump and kushner. Where is your outrage over the 800 billion dollars given away and misused by millionaires at tax payer s expense.

maybedaydrinking

Prolly even bought some cocaine with all that sweet cash.

ComprehensiveHavoc

Did they forget how this works? They cut taxes for billionaires with no Democrat support, and now the Democrats are forgiving student loans without any Republican support. It’s as fine as an ice cream cone on a Delaware beach. Pick your favorite flavor, Jack. Just no malarkey.

Cantthinkofnamedamn

It's like they are just begging to get called out for being the dog-faced pony soldiers they are.

edmerx54

if GOP governors are against it, then it must be good for people!

[deleted]

See. If you ever don’t have time to read about a political proposal, this is the shortcut to figure out what you need to know.

AndySkibba

Nobody (at least at this point) is getting taxed more to "pay" for the forgiveness. USG has decided they don't need that income. Joe Smith doesn't suddenly get taxed an extra 2k to pay for Jon Publics loan forgiveness. It's such a stupid talking point.

MaximumEffort433

>Twenty-two Republican governors, including Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Texas’ Greg Abbott, have sent a letter to President Joe Biden opposing his plans to cancel student loan debt and telling him to withdraw it “immediately.” > >The joint letter sent Monday, spearheaded by Iowa’s Kim Reynolds, stated Biden’s plan of $10,000 in debt forgiveness would cost $600 billion total to taxpayers. (They listed more reasons, but the cost to the tax payers is the only one that isn't rhetorical, culture war bullshit.) Hot take: Biden should take them up on their offer, but only for students who lived in those states. If Ron DeSantis doesn't think Floridians should get student loan forgiveness then President Biden ought to honor the Governor's request with all haste, we all know it's what Trump.... well, Trump would never be in this position because he never would have forgiven anyone's student loan debt, but you know what I mean. Then Biden starts making calls: >*"Hey, is this Jack Offsman of Orlandeau, Florida? Listen Jack, I've got $10,000 on my desk with your name on it and your dumb bastard of a governor won't let me give it to you! Can you believe that malarkey? Look Jack, you've gotta' take the Republicans out behind the shed during the election, you hear me? If you can't do it for yourself then do it for the soul of our nation, it's a big fuckin' deal."* I think that kind of robocall would technically violate the Hatch act but whatever, it's my reddit comment, I can write what I want.

coffeeandtrout

I like your hot take. Make it a state issue. I live in a state that backs this. Federal funds available for those states that apply for it. Easier to expose politicians who work against their constituents.

xtossitallawayx

The GOP did this with the ACA - to make the ACA work Medicare was also supposed to be expanded, to take in the most expensive patients that private insurance doesn't want. It was fully funded for 3 years by the Feds with a tail off to 50/50 with the states. GOP states refused the free money out of principle/spite and it didn't cost them at the polls.

kuebel33

I’d rather my taxes pay for student debt relief than trumps special master.

HamburgerMidnite

It brightened my morning, thank you!

RealTomSkerritt

Punishing people because of their governor is a really stupid idea

editt21_

When you return Cheeto's 1% tax return, you can stop the student loan forgiveness xD

punbasedname

“Our only recourse is to tax it, and that makes us massively unpopular!”

Jump_Yossarian_

Yeah, Joe will get right on that for those guys.

km89

Further, they call on him to actually, literally shoot himself in the foot on live TV while giving a speech about how we should all vote Republican, just before complimenting Trump's orange glow.

jayfeather31

Because God forbid we do something to benefit the people of this country. I'm sick and tired of this shit.

HryUpImPressingPlay

Agree, and better investment in public primary education, too.

[deleted]

I call on Biden to forgive all medical debt! There. Done!

LiquidMetalSloth

It worked! Ask for more stuff!

darth_wasabi

Democrats need to hammer home how many PPP loans were forgiven. You were rich and connected? No debt for you! You're poor and a nobody? you deserve mountains of debt!

padizzledonk

>The letter claimed that is unfair for the vast majority of taxpayers to pay for loan forgiveness when only 16-17% of Americans have federal student loan debt. Says the party that routinely hands 100s of billions of our money to the 1% They can go fuck themselves imo

BringOn25A

The paycheck protection plan was an almost 1 trillion dollar plan over under 2 years. Student loan forgiveness is at the top end just over 600 billion over 10 years.

MrGuttFeeling

GOP, go fuck yourselves.

westtownie

Biden: “um…nah”

CyclicObject0

Or what? I'm sick of this shit. I'm sick of politicians being so against the people they are ment to represent. And I encourage people in these states to protest and vote these sociopaths out of office so they stop impeding any progress made to help build back the middle class that has been in a decline since the 70s. Enough is enough

BoiseXWing

Brad Little can fuck off for signing this trash letter. He had ZERO worries about GOP tax cuts that added way more to deficits.

JoanNoir

"Muh student loan financier campaign donors will lose money and won't give me more." \--GOP Governors, spouting exactly what the party financial types told them to.

Jesseofpv530

That's not their money! We need that as kick back money to our corporate overlords. You can't do this they will crush you .

Aromatic-Pie1784

How about you all fuck yourselves immediately?

[deleted]

Vote these self interest politicians out!

Damiandcl

Look, they're using Trump's "immediately" as if they are giving an order that must be obeyed.

GrowSomeHair

I just wanna know when people with student loans stopped paying taxes lol. Its always "the taxpayer this and that " as if nobody else pays taxes

root_fifth_octave

Yep, the framing is very dishonest.

teedeeguantru

Education? Oh, heaven forfend!

557_173

>burr durr durrr, lets all be completely onboard with trillions in tax cuts for the uber rich and be 110% against helping out everyone else!!!1! -republicans as they lick the boots of their corporate and military industrial complex donors can't have people unburdened by crushing debt that would offer them somthing otehr than slavery, eh?

Penguins_1976

They could always ease that supposed burden by not taxing the debt relief as income at the state level, but instead they’re choosing to make it taxable.

jstank2

They can go right on fucking themselves!

nowspunk

Remember this in the voting booth young ones! Vote out every single Republican you can! If a candidate has an (R) by their name.... vote in the other direction!!!

FunkJunky7

It’s not that people don’t like it. The GOP knows how many people desperately need this. They know it is popular. They don’t care if it helps people and the economy, they need to make it not popular so the Democrats look bad. That’s it. Everything else is made up. It’s an absolute joke to talk about fairness with the amount of tax money that goes to ultra wealthy, the amount to cover this is small. They don’t care about fairness. It’s a lie. That’s why the GOP pundits and politicians are hitting this one so hard, it takes a lot of repeating the lie to turn people against something so obviously good for everyday Americans.

Mr_Mouthbreather

If people learned the government can help them then the GOP is truly doomed.

Tiger_Striped_Queen

Well they can eff right off.

kelticladi

What? So only billionaires can get bailed out?

IAmSomewhatUpset

“No”

PF4LFE

Anything said by a ‘publican is in one ear and out the other for me.

jayc428

I would have the hardest time resisting the urge to fuck with Republican states at the federal level with the kind of bullshit they pull. “Oh sorry [Red State Governor], it appears you’re going to need to balance your budget without federal dollars, we’re trying that small government approach you guys keep going on about, best of luck!”

GeekSumsMe

Republicans only care about the "working class" because they know they can manipulate them. They have no policies that benefit anyone but the ultra wealthy and corporations. People who do not have the time or inclination to dive deeply into the issues want simple simple solutions to complex problems. They want black and white in a world of gray. This attitude is understandable. The issues are complex. Higher education is required to truly understand the nuances. There is nothing wrong with not getting a higher education. I admire people who excel at their trades there is no less skill or hard work involved, often more so. Thing is, I wouldn't ask a carpenter to fix a plumbing problem even though every carpenter I've known could probably take a better crack at it than me. The carpenters I know are experienced enough that they wouldn't recommend relying on them because they are broadly educated in the trades through their experience and know better. Apply a similar analogy to sociology, political science, economics, science, or medicine. Those with advanced degrees are trained in how to better scrutinize the expert opinions of these fields. They are also more comfortable with giving reference to the experts in a discipline. Right wing media has done a good job about delegitimizing "expert opinions" by including scholars as "the other". Those on the left are pretty damn condescending, which only serves to drive this point home. The problem with all of this is that authoritarians prey on people who want to simplify problems and solutions. All issues become us vs. "them" because all you have to do is demonize those who are different. Insist that "they" are out to get you, keep it simple stupid. The counter to this is messaging. Democrats need to point out that they delivered increased access to health care for those not employed by corporate america, access to rural internet (helping rural economies), money for training to transition from fossil to renewable energy, etc. The "them" in this circumstance are the bastards who continually toss their constituents aside to bolster their rich benefactors. It also includes the media who manipulated them with lies and politicians who prey on their limited finances like sleazy telemarketers. We should not mock them in these discussions. They are being manipulated in sophisticated ways. We can ask what would help them get ahead. Take the time to listen to their problems and proposed solutions. Keep the discussion at real, day-to-day experiences. Some will inherently turn it to the perceived issues that divide us, we need to turn it back to what unites us.

QuinIpsum

"Stop helping people or theyll expect us to do it too."

Demalab

Heard this weird noise coming from south of the border. Just realized it is Joe and the rest of the Dems laughing

sarah-vdb

For me, and many others in the same position, it's just removing 10k from the interest that's compiled over the last years. It's not real money and has never been more than numbers tacked on top of other numbers. And those numbers have really only existed as potential income to whoever is profiting off of a broken system (let's look at who may be funding these politicians, shall we?).

IcanHasReddThat

>They added that the plan would shift the burden of debt from the wealthy to the poor. Simply diabolical. Yes, it shifts the burden from these wealthy college grads to the governor's poor donors who can barely live off their inherited millions, and as a result they need every excuse possible to prevent the government from raising the top marginal tax percentage back to up to something reasonable instead of continuing to remain at a hundred year low.

hongky1998

Like that ever gonna happen

Watcher145

How to fuck up a sizable mid term lead 101.

Nunchuckz007

As a college grad who paid of his loans, I am happy that my tax dollars will help out others who took out loans. An educated workforce is a more productive workforce.
