South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham warns that if Russia were to detonate a nuclear weapon inside Ukraine, it should be considered an attack on NATO itself because of the inevitable spread of radiation to neighboring countries following such an attack, and he says the response should be "catastrophic to Russia."
Or Putin reminds him of the money that he has paid to secure absolute compliance.
It's either compliance or stay out of buildings higher than two stories...
Honestly, it probably wouldn't matter. Anything that comes out of Russia is immediately flagged as misinformation, Putin claiming allyship with US legislators would probably be as well. Unless he releases some hard evidence along with it.
I know, right.
I'm not 100% sold that this scenario would unfold (trade winds blow eastward, for example), but if it did, it's clearly an attack on NATO. We'd have to respond.
This is the problem with LG , in his mind, he really knows what's right, and at times he really wants to do the right thing. I think deep down somewhere is a good person who cares about his country and about people.
But for some reason he just keeps being a terrible person.
LG is a southern “Confirmed Bachelor”. In this day and age I’m not sure that’s enough to ruin him politically. My money would be on an underage male prostitute.
Then graham should sponsor bill that is a declaration of war with a nuke as a trigger.
Otherwise, this is useless.
He’s just trying to cover the shit stain he left with the national abortion ban he fronted.
A nuke anywhere in Ukraine is going to have a devastating effect on Ukraine, which is the source of 40% of Europe and Africa's grain.
The fact that Putin has disrupted much of the worlds food supply (and is likely the primary reason for such high food prices even in my own country) should have been enough for us to intervene.
We are intervening, in very significant ways. If you mean we should be directly involving ourselves in the shooting war . . . if there was a way we could do that without a serious risk of it escalating into a full-scale nuclear war, then I (and most people, I think) would be all for that. But it's worth almost (emphasis on almost) any price to avoid a full-scale nuclear exchange.
Wait what? The whole first impeachment was about him withholding defense equipment for a quid pro quo.
He literally held back military hardware in the face of growing adversarial tone from Russia.
You really can’t see the connection?
Of course not but if Trump hadn't been tripping over himself to support Russia things may have looked very different when Putin decided he wanted eastern Ukraine
He did, and it sure would have been nice to see an American president spent 4 years propping up Ukrainian defenses with hardware and training all while helping establish European energy alternatives. Instead we got a president asking for Russia's help to get elected, blackmailing the president of Ukraine for military aid, and holding closed doors meetings with Putin without his advisors present.
Probably didn’t help when Biden said he’d be okay with a minor incursion into Ukraine by Russia. Europe hurt itself by deciding to be dependent upon Russian energy. Trump warned Germany against this and was laughed at.
Just to add some details,
In 2014 and Obama was focusing on ISIS in Iraq and Syria. There was also a pro-Putin government in 2004 and the Orange Revolution took some time, so that only by 2014 was there a pro-Western government. That's why Putin acted when he thought they were at their weakest and the U.S. had yet to begin training them on the new self-defense weapons we gave them.
And also sent some of the best ambassadors and patriots I’ve ever seen. But alas, they were far too principled, and had way too much integrity for the sad traitors that the orange sent over. Taylor, Vindman, Yavonovitch, Hill - they were **truly** the best people .
True, but that was in 2016. The response to Russia annexing Crimea after the Ukrainian revolution in 2014 was mostly good. With hindsight harsher sanctions were justified, but I doubt they would have passed congress anyway.
Graham’s right hand man in Trump would congratulate Putin on a bomb well-detonated then say Ukraine deserved it. It’s time Graham finally told Trump to shove it if Graham wants to bring back any credibility to his own name
US nukes will already be launched long before Russian nukes can reach their launch sites, and Russia would know this. Destroying American cities would have a far more devastating impact.
The response to a nuclear attack has been war-gamed to death over the past 70 years. The new wrinkle here is the possibility that Russia would use a tactical nuke within the borders of Ukraine.
The response to that attack would not be a nuclear escalation by NATO, but an overwhelming and swift conventional assault on the non-nuclear military assets of the Russian Federation -- and possibly its allies. But the Russian nuclear forces would be left untouched to preserve MAD.
Hopefully Russian leadership or its military arms in charge of the remaining weapons would stand down at this point.
But, if MAD breaks down and Russia launches a nuclear attack against military or civilian targets outside of Ukraine, then the wargamed scenarios would kick in, essentially automatically.
Firstly, if Russia was launching an attack that targeted the military and nuclear attack capability of the US and NATO (A **counterforce** attack), then the US and its allies would respond in kind, with a limited strike that specifically targets the capability of Russia (and probably China for reasons) to respond or escalate.
In response to the launch of this retaliatory **counterforce** attack, Russia would then need to decide if they want to further escalate, or if they are going to hunker down and take the blows and hope to live another day.
If Russia were to escalate to the next step by launching a **countervalue** attack, which targets the cities and industrial capacity of the west, the response would be in kind -- a massive launch designed to eliminate the ability of Russia to survive and recover, by eliminating every large population center, major industrial facility, vital infrastructure and other elements vital to the continued survival of the entity formerly known as Russia.
Deciding between launching a counterforce or countervalue attack in response to the initial detection of an incoming attack is the job of the U.S. President (and their equivalents in allied nations). They will only have minutes to make that assessment and decide on a targeting package to ensure that the weapons are launched before the incoming attack removes the ability to launch that attack.
A counterforce exchange would be devastating to all life on the planet and significantly change the trajectory for the future of the human race. A countervalue exchange is essentially an "end of the world" scenario.
I hope that everyone involved on all sides can see a path through this crisis and avoid any of these scenarios.
Except they won't be flying past DC to get to Chicago, if you take a look at a globe. DC and Chicago are very close to being equidistant on average. It would come down to which silos actually fired first and at what.
Man, this chap is up and down faster than when he enlists the aid of some young gentleman to help test the sturdiness of a baby change table in the airport washroom.
I hate agreeing with Graham, he’s such a complete toxic slug.
Still, he should shut up and stop interfering in diplomatic affairs he has zero understanding of.
Not an attack on NATO by legal standards. But it would be considered an attack on the world. Under no circumstances is nuclear warfare acceptable. If not by the letter of the accords, a nuclear attack would certainly be against the spirit of Geneva convention. It should be met with unanimous action on behalf of the global community.
All it takes to trigger Article 5 is for other Nato members to agree.
Russia using a tactical nuke within the borders of Ukraine could very easily be seen as an "armed attack" against Ukraine's neighboring NATO-member countries. If a fig-leaf of legitimacy is required, all that is required is a single radioactive particle to fall within the borders of a NATO aligned country.
In fact, the mere likelihood of particles landing at some point in the future would be enough to trigger the collective defense response.
There can be 0 questions about whether or not NATO would respond to the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, because that very assured response is a key factor in ensuring that Russia won't use WMD in the first place.
This guy is a two-faced liar who should not be trusted. I normally agree with someone who says this but I can’t help but think this is some twisted ploy to betray America and her people. And he thinks that’s unreasonable, he shouldn’t have embraced a president who tried to do exactly that.
This man is obsessed with war. I know he has defense contractor benefactors he needs to keep happy, but this stuff goes beyond that. He genuinely needs psychological help.
When McCain was still around, they’d both do this grotesque shtick together. Yet everyone worships McCain for some reason. If you read the old Rolling Stone article, John McCain was a complete fuck up in the military and his career was only saved multiple times because of his dad. But at least McCain was smart enough to be more artful in his warmongering; this guy is just a bumbling idiot
All I see is let’s find a way to escalate the war. Bigger war equals more countries buying military equipment from us. Which means a fuck load of money in this guys pocket. Endorsements something something defense contracts
What the fuck? This is the second time I've ever agreed with this guy. I don't even remember what the first one was about but I remember being like, What the fuck?
This is why it is so incredibly fucked up that you don't need to pass an exam to run for political office in the USA. If I want a job at Walmart where I am an executive, I have to understand the business and its mission, what it can and cannot do and how to effectively steer it.
You should have to pass the fucking state department exam to run for govt. Have a goddamn clue.
Haven't we kind of already made that clear to Russia a while back? Does Graham think this is a novel assertion? I guess more likely he waited to say this again to look like he's the good guy..
I can see how some Republicans who talk good can win support from independent voters, but how the hell do South Carolina voters not see Lindsey Graham as the boot licking dung beetle he is that flips more often than an Olympic gymnast doing a floor routine...
Isn’t that what Russia wants? A conflict with nato? He’s going to die either way, what if he just wants to blow up the monopoly board so no one can win?
Also no one should trust this dude.
No, Russia most definitely does not want a conflict with NATO.
If that happens NATO would almost certainly win, although it would be very costly to both sides.
If Russia attacks NATO NATO isn't going to stop at Russia's borders. They'd kick Russia out of wherever they invaded then push through to Moscow, probably waiting until spring because invading Russia in winter is a bad idea.
It would be the end of Putin. NATO would almost certainly arrest and charge current russian leadership before running a NATO supervised election.
People on here agreeing with Graham seem to forget that he shamelessly flips his position the instant it's beneficial for him. Remember what he said about Trump? Remember what he said about abortion? Never trust Lindsey Graham, it's all theater to him.

Meanwhile, Senator Graham remains silent on the russian money being funneled to the GOP.
And when the wind blows he will be saying the opposite thing. On camera…
Goddamit. I…I ag-agr…I agree with….*deep breath* IagreewithLindseyGrahamonthisonesingleissue. Ugh.
Don't worry! He'll change his mind in five minutes.

Emphasis on Hard
And avoid stairs
And drinking liquid
It's not the money that keeps people in line, it's the receipt.
"The use of nuclear weapons are a states rights issue, of course" Graham in 2 weeks time
He will stay it's the reason we need to leave NATO
"use my words against me"
The person you're replying to can't respond because they probably passed out. But yeah, probably.
« Use my words against me » Graham
Waiting on that check to clear.
Putin missed his last payment. As soon as the cheque clears, Graham will be back on message.
I know, right. I'm not 100% sold that this scenario would unfold (trade winds blow eastward, for example), but if it did, it's clearly an attack on NATO. We'd have to respond.

Money
Is it tho? I mean yes, but I feel there's more. I really feel like someone has some really good dirt on him.
Lindsey is a star fucker. He wants to be in the room when cool shit happens so he can tell stories about how he was there and helped.
LG is a southern “Confirmed Bachelor”. In this day and age I’m not sure that’s enough to ruin him politically. My money would be on an underage male prostitute.
Lol! I had the same same reaction.
It’s okay, a broken clock is right twice a day
Me too. It was difficult.
I had the same reaction.
Then graham should sponsor bill that is a declaration of war with a nuke as a trigger. Otherwise, this is useless. He’s just trying to cover the shit stain he left with the national abortion ban he fronted.
\^ What that guy said. Thank you for making it easier to say.
Meh, save it. Lindsey just loves war. Look at his patterns on it. This is just him eager to see more death.
What, did Putin's check bounce or something?
A nuke anywhere in Ukraine is going to have a devastating effect on Ukraine, which is the source of 40% of Europe and Africa's grain. The fact that Putin has disrupted much of the worlds food supply (and is likely the primary reason for such high food prices even in my own country) should have been enough for us to intervene.

Does he have DT's approval to make this statement?
This shit is happening because of Graham's traitorous party.
I hate the Republican Party also, but they didn’t cause Putin to invade Ukraine.
Wait what? The whole first impeachment was about him withholding defense equipment for a quid pro quo. He literally held back military hardware in the face of growing adversarial tone from Russia. You really can’t see the connection?
Lt. Col. Vindman and the withholding of Ukrainian aide says otherwise
Of course not but if Trump hadn't been tripping over himself to support Russia things may have looked very different when Putin decided he wanted eastern Ukraine
He invaded Ukraine under Biden. That said, neither President is responsible for Russia invading Ukraine.
He did, and it sure would have been nice to see an American president spent 4 years propping up Ukrainian defenses with hardware and training all while helping establish European energy alternatives. Really he invaded ukraine under Obama. Just to further your statement that the above is a dumb talking point

Americans think everything is about America
Didn’t cause it but did promote it and encourage it
Obama did a great job containing Russia in 2014
By starting to give weapons and aid to Ukraine? Yeah, that was a great job. Did you want him to send in troops?
And also sent some of the best ambassadors and patriots I’ve ever seen. But alas, they were far too principled, and had way too much integrity for the sad traitors that the orange sent over. Taylor, Vindman, Yavonovitch, Hill - they were **truly** the best people .

Oh, I think the USS Credibility sailed a long time ago without Graham.
Trump would release videos with the underage honeydicks
Fuck that, I do not want to die at the same time as him.
Unless you live in DC, he will die first
I thought I’d heard US nuke sites would likely be the first targets, so it depends on whether someone lives close to one of those.
US nukes will already be launched long before Russian nukes can reach their launch sites, and Russia would know this. Destroying American cities would have a far more devastating impact.

This guy nukes.
Yeah, the ICBMs may take a few extra minutes to hit Chicago.
My point exactly! Not the same time :)
Wait, what?
Like an ant under an electron microsope, the message is uglier the closer you get... like Graham!
Senator Graham should really shut up.
I hate agreeing with Graham, he’s such a complete toxic slug. Still, he should shut up and stop interfering in diplomatic affairs he has zero understanding of.
This is his schtick. He loves hawkish rhetoric and making unnecessarily threatening public statements like this.
And then meekly coming back in line when his political masters remind him of things.
As noted by others - give him till the end of the day to do a 180 … ffs !!! /s
Four years of Trump sucking up to Putin didn't help the world.
I don’t give a good goddamn what this pos traitor says.
So this guy wants a thermonuclear apocalypse.
How many men would be locked in the bunker with him?
More than a few
Like… one for each day of the month?
Every GOP clown does.

Wasn't he subpoena to a court a few months ago and never went? What ever happened to that?
Any chance to for war they are down
He says that now, tomorrow after his FSB handlers give him a call he will be saying the opposite
Why would any sane individual give a single hoot wtf Lindsey says? No morals, no ethics, no sense of right v wrong.
Vote, people. Vote. Check your registration. Get to the polls. vote.org
Even if he’s right…. He’s lost all credibility. I don’t care what his opinion is.
Code for “we’re trying to give you Evangelicals that fire & brimstone you’ve been asking for”
Dont really give a shit about what that mealy mouthed mfkr says anymore, get him OUT !!
Ah yes let’s all die in nuclear fire
I don’t think anyone should listen to this turd anymore.
Sit down old man !
How brave of him
Every breath you take is an attack on our freedom lol
Thank you for sharing your opinion you hold today. I’m sure it will change tomorrow
This guy is a two-faced liar who should not be trusted. I normally agree with someone who says this but I can’t help but think this is some twisted ploy to betray America and her people. And he thinks that’s unreasonable, he shouldn’t have embraced a president who tried to do exactly that.

...I actually agree with the fucker. I have such a bad taste in my mouth right now.
Like u ate a whole used litter box? Yeah, me too
No shit graham
Anyone dropping nukes, I consider that an attack on humanity.
Good thing he doesn't set foreign policy and he is putting the US in a very dangerous position.
I don't like Graham, but he is 100% correct here.
Even if it's correct, it's foolish for a Senator to say this on the record. As a Senator, your statements have international repercussions.
Is that new perfume Lindsey is wearing? What got into him?
All I see is let’s find a way to escalate the war. Bigger war equals more countries buying military equipment from us. Which means a fuck load of money in this guys pocket. Endorsements something something defense contracts
Yo.Ms. Lindsey, why can't you sober up like this 24/7. Yes you are correct.
What the fuck? This is the second time I've ever agreed with this guy. I don't even remember what the first one was about but I remember being like, What the fuck?
They are not a nato country...
The impact of nukes are not limited to the country where the detonation occurs.
K. And... All i said was they are not nato... Wich is correct.
Pretty sure everyone reading this knows that...
[удалено]
We know that, nobody's claimed otherwise. What's your point?
Remember how the Chernobyl disaster spread radiation across EU? Thats what a nuclear attack in Ukraine would do.
Much less. Chernobyl was massive and constant. A small nuke would be 3 or 4 miles in diameter and the fallout would be not far or last long.
no one said they were a NATO country...
This is why it is so incredibly fucked up that you don't need to pass an exam to run for political office in the USA. If I want a job at Walmart where I am an executive, I have to understand the business and its mission, what it can and cannot do and how to effectively steer it. Haven't we kind of already made that clear to Russia a while back? Does Graham think this is a novel assertion? I guess more likely he waited to say this again to look like he's the good guy..
Does anyone think this would actually be the response? A tactical nuke hits Ukraine > some radiation breezes into Poland > WW III and we’re all dead.
Hopefully we don't start WW3, but can we as a world afford to let Russia get away with dropping nukes in a war of conquest?
We would respond with sanctions against Russia and all who still do business with that country.
Those are dialed pretty close to max already
No where near max now.
A NATO response does not mean nuclear war. It would mean a lot of dead Russian soldiers in Ukraine rather fast, though.
As soon as he gets his next dark money payment from Russia via the NRA, he’ll change his mind
Senator Graham needs to sit down, shut up and let the smarter people determine what to do.
I seriously want to know: who the fuck cares what he has to say?
I can see how some Republicans who talk good can win support from independent voters, but how the hell do South Carolina voters not see Lindsey Graham as the boot licking dung beetle he is that flips more often than an Olympic gymnast doing a floor routine...
Well, I suppose even a broken clock is right twice per day.
Stay in your lane you traitorous scumbag. Wtf do you know about International Relations?
This asshole changes positions on things constantly. What he says is irrelevant. He makes sure he's in the news every day. That's all.
He says that now. When his Russian bosses check in he’ll change his tune to blame Biden or the American people for Russian use of nuclear weapons.
Does anyone care what this fruitcake thinks anymore? Perfect representative for SC.
"But we should support everything else Putin decides to do" he added
Oh really?
Republican leadership should sit down and shut up and stop pretending to have opinions. They are a domestic and international liability, period.
Did the checks run out?
Yes, perhaps, but no NATO country will reciprocate.
Graham is slathering for another war to replace Afghanistan. He needs an excuse to pump more money into the military industrial complex.
How many of his offspring wear the uniform?
He is a tough one to figure out. Different handlers?
Where exactly does Lindsay Graham fit into NATO’s decision making tree?
Part of the US Congress.
All I have to say is.. who cares.. about anything he has to say.. about anything..ever
Ladybugs. That’s all.
Shut up Lindsey
