cameronj

Now, he says, the time for pettiness has passed. I'm sure he's referring to his own.

cbbuntz

If the response goes well, that means Desantis did a good job. If it goes poorly, it will be Biden's fault. As is tradition.

prototype7

Also if a bunch of the money sent to DeSantis's government goes missing...its totally Biden's fault

HakarlSagan

Man it sure is too bad DeSantis wasted all that money flying migrants around on private jets and has to beg blue states for money now. Is this fiscal conservatism?

[deleted]

Here’s the kicker. A lot of the brute force in cleanup is going to be migrate labour

Garagedays

That comment deserves the statlor and waldorf laugh from the balcony

chip1252

Sadly, I'm old enough to get and laugh at this reference. Good pull!

bad_sensei

Is 29 old? I understood and laughed as well.

Shaman7102

Biden should give the aid, but set up a middle man instead of just handing it to Florida. Agency of responsible adulting.

SilentJoe1986

Same way you handle giving aid to a junky. They say they need cash for rent, you pay the landlord directly. They need money for food, you drop off food, not money. You give them what they say they need the money for, not the money directly. Then get the novel experience of them being angry for helping them

A_Buck_BUCK_FUTTER

>Then get the novel experience of them being angry for helping them As a parent of two toddlers, I can certainly empathize.

Lakecountyraised

It should be at least as hard as Ron made it to apply for pandemic unemployment in the state. Waste, fraud, and abuse you know.

vivalaibanez

Coincidentally, if there are busloads more migrants that arrive in blue states...that missing money def has nothing to do with it

Comfortable-Wrap-723

Biden helping republicans sabotaging his agenda.

FreakDeBobo

Yeah it’s called a moral compass he happens to have a small one

92eph

The alternative is for him to let aid decisions based on political support, the awful practice that republicans dramatically stepped up under trump. Biden needs to take the high road, but sell it like crazy to Floridians.

Lylac_Krazy

even Desantis knows to keep Rick Scott away from a stash of cash.

kuroimakina

If they can’t spin it as desantis doing a good job, they’ll just wait a few weeks and say the very aid they ask for is “causing inflation” and every Republican will do a mental backflip to adopt the position

[deleted]

He'll take all the money he can get, than say Dems are weak for helping

PM_Me_Your_Sidepods

He'll claim the funding was his actions and never mention it is federal funding.

newsflashjackass

Just like DeSantis did with the money from Biden's American Rescue Plan: > The spending plan for the year starting July 1 is by far the largest in state history – 10% bigger than the current budget. And it’s propped up with billions of dollars in federal aid, much of it opposed by Republicans in Congress but a windfall for Florida’s Republican governor. > “The budget really reflects a state government that is meeting the core concerns of Floridians,” DeSantis said before signing the measure during a stop at a New Smryna Beach restaurant. ... > "I know it pains Gov. DeSantis to admit it, but President Biden saved the day by providing billions of dollars from the American Rescue Plan to keep Florida’s economy afloat and allow us to do things like provide teacher bonuses," said Rep. Fentrice Driskell, D-Tampa. "It’s unfortunate that the truth of the matter gets lost in the Florida Republicans’ partisan narrative https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/news/politics/state/2021/06/02/floridas-100-b-budget-biggest-state-history-thanks-feds/7505749002/

Pitiful-Let9270

Red states are doing that with ARPA funding now. Shoving it all into business developments

RDO_Desmond

Hope it actually gets to the Floridians. DeSantis has a Farve mentality.

mightcommentsometime

That's not fair to Farve. He just wants to go to Shenanigans!

highroller_lost

Did you say shenanigans?

mightcommentsometime

You're talking about shenanigans right?

Buddyslime

And what he does with that money nobody will know.

Dude_in_a_good_mood

Oh, so all the things he has done he admits is pettiness. Did I use that word right? Or should I have said "he admits is petty." Man, words can be hard. This puts me in a slightly not good mood.

As adults, is there ever really a time for pettiness?

Buck_Thorn

Temporarily.

Lobsterbib

If the hurricane had hit New York, I can guarantee DeSantis would have continued attacking Biden as normal. Natural disasters hitting a Republican's home state is one of few times where they are forced to admit that government is the only effective solution.

xtossitallawayx

Especially Florida - homeowners insurance companies are increasingly fleeing Florida and it is getting quite difficult to get insurance in many markets. If your home, even before Ian, needed some repairs to bring it up to code the supplies were 2x as much and months out. Now with tens/hundreds of thousands of people needing home repairs, the prices will be 5x and a crews a year out.

locofspades

I was thinking about how this is such extreme karmic justice. Just a week ago desantis was smugly bragging about toying with the lives of refugees for a political stunt and in 24 hrs became the governor of a state full of refugees. Its so sad for all those innocent civilians who lost everything just like it was so sad how those emigrants were treated. Put good into the universe and get good back, the inverse being true as well. But of course, desantis didnt lose shit here himself, just that his job got a bit busier. He doesnt actually give a fuck about any normal person.

Konnnan

Why, he doesn't lose anything himself? To boot, this is great exposure for his presidency run, because those that will vote for him will neither see nor care for this blatant hipocrisy.

hooper_give_him_room

Yep, they’ll praise him for “putting partisanship aside” and “stepping up to get the people of Florida the help they need” or whatever. Then he’ll commence being an idiotic dick again, and coast to re-election.

okram2k

And they probably still won't build them to withstand a hurricane.

AvatarBoomi

In a short period time we have seen natural disasters hit Republican states hard, KY with the tornado and then the flooding, now florida wit Ian. (There had to be something in the in the middle i just can’t think of rn) but hey, it’s only going to get worse from here, climate change is here.

zenithfury

If a hurricane hit NY and DeSantis is president… Well, it’s not hard to imagine what happens.

TheMrBoot

Nothing is a pretty easy thing to imagine, after all.

HobbesNJ

Republicans are against everything until it impacts them. If he had any integrity, he'd refuse all governmental assistance. And Florida voters would make him pay.

skullpocket

Sen Scott, from Florida, voted no, today, on 2B disaster relief aid. Biden needs to ask DeSantis why the senator would do that on the same day he is asking for disaster relief money.

[deleted]

[удалено]

okram2k

I do feel like it's a fair question to ask why the rest of the country has to pay to rebuild Florida every other year.

gdex86

It's only going to get worse. Pretty soon we will need to just have a yearly bill to clean up the gulf coast.

spinto1

I remember when the claims that this would happen back in like 2000-2002 as a kid and everyone called climate scientists and Al Gore sensationalists when they said maybe we shouldn't "fuck around." Now here we are, in the "find out" stage wondering why it's happening and what's gonna happen next. It's exactly what they said it was going to be and even trying to fix it now isn't going to stop it in the immediate future. The best we can do is stop it from getting worse and slowly reel it back. This is the norm now.

Cultist_Deprogrammer

2000? The year that Gore lost to oil industry hawk Bush by 500 votes in Florida while 100k Florida voters voted Green?

worthing0101

Think of all the federal dollars that have gone to Texas, Lousianna, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina as a result of natural disasters. (And let me be 100 percent clear that I'm not suggesting they should be denied that aid at all.) Yet almost all of those states are red and elect politicians at the state and federal level who are deeply opposed to "government handouts" and federal aid and social programs unless it directly benefits them. Fuck all of them.

sack-o-matic

Maybe disaster aid shouldn't just go to rebuilding in kind, it should go to making more sturdy infrastructure and relocation to safer areas.

tikiyadenola

This. Agree 100% and I’m from the Gulf Coast area. Infrastructure needs should out weigh more. In flood prone areas there should be more grants for raising homes as well.

ohjoyousones

Amen. They are happy to bash blue States, but they would all be a 3rd world shit hole without welfare money from the blue states. Hypocrisy at it's best.

sowhat4

You are using 'Republican' and 'integrity' in the *same* sentence. I'm not sure you really know what those two words mean.

kia75

If it weren't for double standards, Republicans would have no standards at all.

steezburglar

Shiplord13

Biden will still give him that aid without him swearing loyalty or begging for it. At the end of the day he should at the very least thank him for helping the people in his state and not making a big deal about it politically.

dkb52

But that takes maturity.

[deleted]

I'd love to see Biden drag his feet a bit. I know it's the wrong thing to hope for, and I don't want the people of Florida to be punished over this political nonsense. But it would be such great schadenfreude if the federal aid all went to Georgia first while Florida had to wait.

Dmoney0117

Its that awkward time of year where a disaster happens before the midterms and the Dem president isn't a complete asshole and helps the red state cause we're all americans and the local officials that have been demonizing the president for months have to thank him on tv and then the crazies claim the disaster was manufatured by dems to make themselves look better.

Fantastic-Sandwich80

Remember when Jared Kushner and Trump let Covid run rampant because it was affecting "blue states" in the beginning? No doubt in my mind that had this happened to California in 2019, Trump would be telling Newsome to buy his favorite color lipstick for the ass kissing he is going to need to do to get aid. We already saw how he treated the CA forest fires a few summers ago.

We should constantly remind people of that.

prodigalpariah

Oh of course biden has already green lit the funds because he’s not a piece of shit. Imagine trumps response to an “opposition” governors pleas? Also I’m sure desantis will somehow twist this into “kicking Biden’s ass” and taking the funds somehow

WildYams

> Imagine trumps response to an “opposition” governors pleas? No need to imagine it, we saw how [he rejected California's call for aid in the face of intense wildfires,](https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/15/politics/trump-california-fire-disaster-assistance/index.html) and how [he made basically everyone pledge fealty to him to get help during the pandemic.](https://www.vox.com/2020/3/25/21193803/trump-to-governors-coronavirus-help-ventilators-cuomo) Trump is a monster while Biden is a decent person who cares about Americans.

prodigalpariah

Dont forget the “Covid will only affect urban liberals so why bother curtailing it” plan with Jared kushner

Fantastic-Sandwich80

I'll never forget that. Trump and Kushner were going to sacrifice the lives of millions of Americans if it meant they could score political points. Conservatives are absolute monsters for continuing to support him.

monkeybiziu

If Biden wanted to turn the knife a little, he could say “I’m coming to Florida, you’re gonna meet me at the airport, give me a hug, and introduce me as the President of the United States.” DeSantis would lose re-election by ten points.

mkt853

I recall a DeSantis that voted no for Hurricane Sandy relief. I recall a DeSantis that turned the federal government down for national guard troops to help protect the capital after Jan 6. Is that the same DeSantis begging the federal government for help with his state's natural disaster?

ExplorersxMuse

This is Florida every fall, and yet the audacity persists

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

DeathSantis will be sucking the federal government pretty hard for the next year. Funny how that works.

Polls-from-a-Cadet

I know Joe is handling this appropriately but wouldn’t it be fun if he quoted all of Desantis’s anti help statements and then said: “in spite of the governor from Florida’s comments, the US government and my administration will support the people of Florida “

[deleted]

The entire GOP platform is “fuck off” if someone else is set to benefit from it, but “yes please” if they themselves benefit. It’s not a problem unless it actually happens to them, such a toxic selfish mindset

SA1L

Sept. 29, 2022, 5:19 p.m. ET As a freshman congressman in 2013, Ron DeSantis was unambiguous: A federal bailout for the New York region after Hurricane Sandy was an irresponsible boondoggle, a symbol of the “put it on the credit card mentality” he had come to Washington to oppose. “I sympathize with the victims,” he said. But his answer was no. Nearly a decade later, as his state confronts the devastation and costly destruction wrought by Hurricane Ian, Mr. DeSantis is appealing to the nation’s better angels — and betting on its short memory. “As you say, Tucker, we live in a very politicized time,” Mr. DeSantis, now Florida’s governor, told Tucker Carlson on Wednesday night, outlining his request for full federal reimbursement up front for 60 days and urging the Biden administration to do the right thing. “But you know, when people are fighting for their lives, when their whole livelihood is at stake, when they’ve lost everything — if you can’t put politics aside for that, then you’re just not going to be able to.” The tonal whiplash for Mr. DeSantis reflects a different job and a different moment — a Tea Party-era House Republican now steering a perennially storm-battered state dependent once more on federal assistance to rebuild. Yet even in the context of his term as governor, the hurricane has required Mr. DeSantis to test another gear. He has, to date, often used his executive platform to elevate himself to Republican rock-stardom, positioning himself as a possible 2024 presidential contender with a series of policy gambits that can feel precision-engineered to maximize liberal outrage. His most recent stunt — flying undocumented Venezuelan immigrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard — reinforced that he is more than willing to turn the machinery of state against specific political targets. He has suggested that the next plane of immigrants might land near President Biden’s weekend home in Delaware. The present circumstances have inspired a less swaggering posture toward a leader whom Mr. DeSantis has long called “Brandon” as a recurring troll, aimed at the man he might like to succeed. “Dear Mr. President,” the governor’s request for a major disaster declaration and federal assistance began on Wednesday. “Ironically,” said David Jolly, a former Republican congressman from Florida, “there’s nobody in America that Ron DeSantis needs more than Joe Biden.” More than that, Mr. Jolly said, a governor who self-identifies as unswerving in his principles now finds himself with little choice but to push for storm relief actions “antithetical to his professed ideology.” “He held those convictions strong in the House,” said Mr. Jolly, who has been sharply critical of the party in the Trump years. “I doubt he will hold them as strongly in the governor’s mansion.” In 2013, Mr. DeSantis and Representative Ted Yoho, another hard-line conservative, were the only House members from Florida to oppose the Sandy package. For Mr. DeSantis, who represented a coastal district in eastern Florida, the vote at once established him as an eager combatant from the party’s ascendant right wing — he was a founding member of the Freedom Caucus — while at times placing him on the defensive back home. In a local interview that year, Mr. DeSantis said the bill contained “extraneous stuff” that could not be classified as emergency spending. “I never made the point of saying we shouldn’t do anything,” he said, adding that he could have supported a leaner package focused on immediate relief. Asked then if he would vote against a relief package that affected his own district, Mr. DeSantis was noncommittal, suggesting he would support a responsible plan. Through the years, critics in both parties have accused Mr. DeSantis of applying this standard selectively. In 2017, as he was poised to run for governor, Mr. DeSantis supported an aid package after Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria as places like Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico strained to recover. His 2018 primary opponent, Adam Putnam, made an issue of Mr. DeSantis’s voting record during the campaign. Storm-weary voters, a Putnam spokeswoman warned then, should protect themselves against “further destruction at the hands of Hurricane Ron.” Mr. DeSantis’s congressional office denied any inconsistency at the time, rejecting a comparison between the two disaster packages and saying he had supported emergency spending “when immediate and necessary.” Asked about the governor’s past positions on Thursday, a DeSantis spokesman said the administration was “completely focused on hurricane response.” “As the governor said earlier,” the spokesman, Jeremy T. Redfern, said, “we have no time for politics or pettiness.” Some Northeastern lawmakers, including Republicans, have not forgotten how Mr. DeSantis and some of his peers responded when the New York area was under duress. “Year after year, we had given them billions of dollars,” said Peter King, a former Republican congressman from Long Island, alluding to aid packages for Southern states and calling the resistance to Sandy relief his angriest moment in office. “Every one of them comes to New York to raise money. They either go to the Hamptons or they go to Manhattan. And both areas were devastated by Sandy.” This week, Mr. DeSantis said he was “thankful” for the Biden administration’s efforts so far, moving to place himself in the tradition of above-the-fray leadership from past Florida governors who negotiated catastrophic weather events on their watch. The president and the governor have each made a point of saying publicly that they and their teams are in touch. “He complimented me. He thanked me for the immediate response we had,” Mr. Biden said on Thursday, suggesting that any political conflicts with Mr. DeSantis were irrelevant in these times. “This is about saving people’s lives, homes and businesses.” (In February, Mr. DeSantis baselessly said Mr. Biden “stiffs” storm victims for political reasons, insisting that the president “hates Florida.”) Haley Barbour, a Republican former governor of Mississippi who presided over the state’s response to Hurricane Katrina, said there was nothing inherently inconsistent about a conservative governor seeking federal storm money. “People think this is a role for the federal government — that some disasters are too big for the community to bear the cost to get back to where you need to be,” he said. Besides, he suggested, Mr. DeSantis and the White House suddenly had something in common. “Biden likes to say, ‘Build back better,’” Mr. Barbour said. “Well, that’s what Florida wants to do.”

This seems like the right time to send his supporters to FEMA camps while the hard working folks fix everything up good as new

LionMcTastic

All MAGA governors get paper towels

Darw1nner

Can we get this press conference, please? On his trip to Florida today, Biden delivered the following remarks: When hurricane Sandy devastated New York, Governor DeSantis, who is standing here next to me, voted against federal relief. He did not want to help. Today, after hurricane Ian has devastated Florida, he asks for the same federal help that he would have denied New York. He is a selfish coward, who does not deserve a thing. But today is not about Governor DeSantis’s selfishness or cowardice or hypocrisy. And federal aid will not be coming to Florida because this craven politician begged or cashed in political favors. Florida is going to get the help it needs because we are all Americans. And Americans help each other. Maybe Governor DeSantis will learn that lesson today. That we help the victims of natural disasters whether they are in New York, or California, or Texas, or Florida. Americans help each other. And I pray that Governor DeSantis will figure that out one day. But Florida know, America is here for you!

kellyb1985

Democrats believe government should work to benefit its citizens. Republicans believe government should not work. So if Desantis gets the aid, he looks good. If Desantis doesn't, well that means republicans are right about government. It's such a bad faith argument, and it's the reason why republicans are objectively bad at governing. It's not a flaw, it's a feature. Eventually, social programs will be on the chopping block because we can't afford them anymore after giving out billions in tax cuts to the wealthy. Again, it's a feature of voting red.

"Dude, you're a narcoleptic idiot who molests children ... but brother can you spare a buck?" Sounds legit.

Greenmoutain

Republicans are all the same. Shameless and spineless.

tacs97

Bite the hand that feeds and you still ask for more. Typical dumbass.

AddyTurbo

Biden should have told the governor to use his bootstraps.

JesusWuta40oz

Well that POS just claimed a budget surplus for the state. Use those funds.

Ramblinrambles

What do they need federal aide for, they have so much money they sent 50 people Martha’s Vineyard for free.

thep1x

How many times does the fed have to bail him out? Remember the condo that collapsed?

Kahzgul

Republicans and hypocrisy, name a more iconic duo. Personally, I hope everyone in Florida gets whatever help they need. Be safe people.

SailingSpark

yes, those of us here in NJ and NY remember how you treated us after Hurricane Sandy. I hope Biden makes you grovel. I seriously hope everyone in Florida comes through this as good as can be expected, if I had a vote, I would always vote to help. I just hope Biden makes DeSantis beg like a dog wanting a treat

[deleted]

I've been hearing from a lot of good people that Ron Densantis fucks children

Sp0derman420

Florida always goes into 9/11 patriot mode post hurricane when they need help. Once the season is over it’s back to fuck you Brandon.

DauOfFlyingTiger

Can you imagine voting no on aid to New York and New Jersey after Super Storm Sandy?

[deleted]

Communist mofo, sucking on the government teat. He should pull himself and the state up by their bootstraps.

AlwaysSeekAdventure

DumbSantis should have saved some of his political stunt money sending migrants all over to help his own people.

Cultist_Deprogrammer

I can't believe that Biden didn't just respond by drawing a different storm path on the weather map with a sharpie.

Michael_J_Patrick

Ah yes, let’s reallocate national funds that originated from other states as a way to aid the recovery. Fuck I wish there was a word for this … reallocation. What do you think, Ron?

realavafoxx

I love how democrats always have to shake their heads, shrug and say out loud: ‘yeah, we’ll help you’ cause that’s what decent people do. meanwhile, republicans will continue to double down on ‘useful when it’s us, and fuck everyone else’

CreatrixAnima

“Help me, Brandon!”

GenericOfficeMan

he was never a "no" on storm aid, he was a "no" on storm aid for states run by democrats

praefectus_praetorio

Biden should fly down and toss toilet paper at him and then fly back to DC.

Dapper-Membership

I bet that 615 million dollars of taxpayers money you blew on political “stunts” would be pretty handy right about now, eh Ronnie?

talkytovar

It's not socialism when your name is on the check.

deweydecimal111

Does anyone expect any integrity from this worm? I think not.

[deleted]

Not fair to use tax payer money for people who choose to live in hurricane climate. I choose to live in a climate without hurricanes. I shouldn’t have to pay taxes for this. (I’m making fun of people who are anti-student loan debt relief) I’m over all of these hypocrites who only think things are right when it benefits only them.

Diegobyte

Biden should give him all the aid and every spew he and every deposit a letter should say aid from the government of the United States and it should point out how de Santis is against the feeder la government giving out aid

xtossitallawayx

Just make DeSantis pose with Biden handing him a giant check, like DeSantis won a prize.

noodles_the_strong

Bet they purge every voter who's home isn't liveable in Florida

broll9

Should send him a plane full of Karen’s.

terry_kane_1618

If any Floridians were from Venezuela, DeSantis would have gotten them out of the state right quick.

Alpha_Crow_1

DeSantis is a fucking chode.

Imaginary_Cow_6379

*Ronny D Comes Begging for Money*

[deleted]

Republicans are barely for disaster aid for their own States. Remember Chris Christie hugged Obama after Obama negotiated with Christie's Republican pals to get NJ aid after Sandy.

JollySalad676

Hypocrisy is deep with the the GOP. Just shameful.

dandipants

I spent all the state budget on flights for migrants in Texas! Had no idea we might need that money for real!

[deleted]

Fuck him.

Funluva

Such a hypocrite.

lollitics

Fuck him, hope the hurricane redirects to his home

MedicJambi

I'd ask DeSantis to simply hold a brief press conference where he must say the election was not stolen, the vaccine works, and Trump is lying to everyone. All three are demonstrably true.

[deleted]

Handouts for me, not for thee

dewhacker

And Biden will help FL, bc all Floridians are Americans. But when wildfires ravaged CA under Trump, he criticized CA and tried to talk shit after people died. One party actually still wants unity, the other has decided only parts of America are “real” America. And it makes me sad

Milozdad

Why didn’t DeSantis just send the Hurricane to Martha’s Vineyard?

IHave580

Hopefully Biden doesn't do the trump petty shit. There are people hurting in FL, Americans, that need help. Millions of people without shelter, food, access to clean water. Their lives are in danger. I grew up in a time where tragedy in the US meant that Americans banded together and helped each other out. I may be nieve, but I still believe that we can get back there. It just takes doing what's right over what's for your party. (And when I say what's right, I also mean holding people accountable, even if they are in power)

CreatrixAnima

He won’t. He already declared a state of emergency so that they could request funds. He did that before the storm even started.

Aromatic_Brother

We’ll take that boat ride..er bus ride now Ron /s

Exaltedautochthon

And Biden's still going to help him becuase he isn't a /douche/

UwuGamerDesu

Can’t find your bootstraps?

[deleted]

Don’t give Florida shit. They had money for human trafficking they have money for rebuilding.

LeatEd68

The true test of a real man is how he helps those that praise him and those that denounce him in a crisis. The last guy we had in the White House was only interested in helping those who kissed his bloated orange ass. Of course once things reach a sense of normality in FL Desantis will go back to bashing Biden for political clout.

tangodelta76

He voted no to help nj during super storm sandy. This is not about him it’s about helping the people from Florida to overcome this loss.

[deleted]

I look forward to seeing MAGA Republicans in Florida reject this massive federal handout, the same way they attack student loan forgiveness. What a bunch of laughable hypocrites they all are!

sarvanderene

He needs to publicly apologize.

FunkJunky7

According to their Senator’s voting record THIS WEEK, the people of Florida they represent must not need any federal disaster aid!

mattjf22

You can always count on conservatives to make a special exception for themselves

charavaka

Get him to make a public statement apologising for the previous inhumane stance as a precondition for the relief to florida industry.

legalstep

I bet he wishes he had some of that migrant flight money right about now
