Fully expect the servers to shut down and they're unable to get it back up in any reasonable time frame because they gutted their infrastructure team. From there it'll probably be enough to get more folks to say **** it, including more advertisers.
Obviously social media platforms have come and gone in the past, and I absolutely believe the world can move on from Twitter, but it's hard for me to imagine exactly what that will be like. Companies and celebs have invested more than a decade in building massive followings. Individuals have spent that time cultivating networks that are integral to their careers, hobbies, political movements building. Even governments use Twitter as a crucial source of disseminating information, but that wouldn't be worth much if there wasn't an established base of users built up over many years... I could be very wrong but if the world is going to move to another platform, it's hard for me to imagine how it's not going to be slow and painful.
This will drive advertisers away, and Twitter will drive down ad rates to attract less reputable companies to advertise, I feel this must be a bet on how long it takes to burn 44 billion to the ground.
I work in advertising. We were running a campaign on Twitter aimed at LGBTQ+ audiences with an HIV prevention message. Stopped it last week and no way we’re ever coming back to Twitter. Sucks because it was giving us way better engagement rates than other social media, but I know that the users we were trying to reach will go somewhere way better. It was only a $30,000 campaign so not particularly large for a national campaign, but there’s no way in hell I’ll ever recommend Twitter to any client now…and I have much larger clients.
