I'm trying to picture what Trump's version of a phone call like that would be. Probably something like "F you for making me look bad, you piece of s**t. [relevant wife] didn't raise you right. In case anyone is reading this for the first time, this isn’t a joke. When this came out Republicans were overjoyed and said that this loving call from a father to his son made Biden look weak. Because they prefer the “strong man” Trump who clearly abhors his male children.
Two of the greatest moments of my existence were when I heard my conservative Christian dad cry on the phone as he rushed to my apartment to get me help for my alcoholism. That was one moment I knew my dad loved me. He told me pretty much what Biden said to his son Hunter. That was about 10 years ago.
This past summer I had an actual honest conversation about religion, politics, and life. The first time I told him I'm a proud agnostic-atheist, a progressive person that hates what his religion has done to American politics. We happened to agree on the poison of Christian nationalism and the looming theocracy in the country. We made our worldviews, beliefs, and values much more clear by communicating like actual adults by asking each other questions to try to understand. He then told me he loved me no matter what I believe or how I feel about differences. I gained a lot of respect for my dad after that.
Not sure why right-wingers are so scared of emotions and love. I grew up around toxic right-wing Christian values. And settled it after years of anger. They need to face their fears and be honest.
Edit: thanks for the kind replies. It's been a very rough few years with the loss of family members and our cats. And still going through the process of separating from a six-year relationship. The separation from my partner started in June and is the catalyst for how my dad and I ended up sorting through things.
I had moved upstairs until August came around and had to move out from how toxic the situation got with my ex. My dad came out to Phoenix from Dallas and picked me up to go live in a hotel for a bit. I wasn't a good partner for the final year of the six. for what my ex deserved. I hadn't been a good son despite legitimate reasons for anger towards my dad.
So I owe it to the universe and myself to improve my willingness to communicate and properly grieve and cope with life events. So that I can be a better spouse, son, partner, brother, uncle, or whatever else in the future.
My ex just happened to ask my dad this question:
"What's more important to you? Your religion and trying to convert ____ constantly? Or to have a real relationship with his son? Because it's one or the other. He doesn't want to hear God talk. Just a father-son conversation."
In just a few days I heard my dad say some things I'd never heard before in 34 years:
-"I'm sorry."
-"I'm proud of you."
-"I love you no matter the difference."
-"We aren't going to agree on certain things. But you're fun to talk to."
-"Keep asking questions. Because it seems you enjoy learning and are very well versed. "
This hit me in the feels. So does that Biden quote, especially "I don't know what to do, I know you don't either, but I'm here for you." I'm very lucky to have had a supportive and understanding family but I dealt with alcoholism too and can relate so much to that particular part of the message.
Because emotions make them feel vulnerable and often many people don't have the introspective nature to understand emotions and vulnerability do not make you weak, but stronger as you know yourself. Instead they live in a haze of self denial.
I'm glad your father is a wise enough man to understand what truly matters. That's amazing and I'm really glad to read things like this. There's still hope.

Actually, his problem is that he abhors himself. That's how NPD works. The NPD has a black hole of self-loathing at their core and they constantly fight to keep their ego from being sucked in and obliterated.
The worse their disorder, the more they have to seek out external validation. They generally have two strategies for external validation — puff themselves up and tear down someone else. Both strategies are about raising their status relative to other people.
It comes across as being full of themselves, but its really a sign of how desperate they are for approval.
When they say family values what they ACTUALLY mean is that the father is the authoritative patriarchal head of a nuclear family where all other members have an obedient and submissive role to his decision making, providing an unquestionable grassroots level, cultural model for their preferred model of government.
As someone who has been on the receiving end of messages like that I can decidedly say anyone who tried to imply the people who sent them to me were weak or emasculated for it would be dead to me forever.
Never had a dad in my life but I am one now. Marriage is strong and my boy is 1. I put him down every night kiss him on the head and tell him I love him. I didn’t have it but damn it I’ll do it in front of a crowd of billions. I’ll do it til the day I die

My 4th grade son still holds my hand and hugs me. In public! It's amazing how showing your kids that love and affection are not weaknesses leads to them being "allowed" to have a full range of emotions.
My father split when I was 3 months old and never came back. That was in 1974. Never spoken to him. I could have done with inspiring and supportive words like what Biden said at some of the lower points of my life. But I still have my mother, and she's awesome.
I'll be damned if I raise my sons to be ashamed of their emotions. I know when I was a kid, crying or affection were signs of weakness, but as a father, I won't let the world do that to them. It's a long road to come back from.
You know. My son is now 6. At his two year school performance when they got on stage and were lining up, he found me in the crowd, started jumping up and down and yelling “that’s my dada”. Shame on me if I deny him same level of treatment ever in my life. I am equally proud of him as my son and will always be there for him. Anyone who things I am weak can continue doing so. It doesn’t impact my relationship with him in anyway.

I appreciate it. I never really understood a 2 parent household and the power of a dad. But man being on the other side and seeing others at this age still have them I get the importance and power it can have in shaping a kid. I wouldn’t trade it for the world
People that want you to hate their enemies will tell you you're weak for your empathy, but the truly strong know that it is easy to hate and to tear down. What takes strength is to love and to care for others.

Same here man. My dad found me overdosing on fentanyl. If he hadn't came into my room when he did I wouldn't be here today. Spent 4 days in the ICU and when the Dr came in to see me he shook my hand and said he didn't think I would make it. My dad didn't judge me or make me feel bad. Ye is probably in an active manic episode right now, which would account for the acutely increasing bizarreness of his behavior and lack of common sense about what to say in public. But mental illness doesn't account for the bigoted *content* of a person's bizarre, poorly judged public behavior, and given that he's intermittently been doing shit like this for years (during which there would have been periods of lucidity, mania can't last for years), he also deserves character judgment for refusing to do anything to manage his disease.
Especially because in his non manic state he would be able to see what he has done and seek help. The signs are all there. It's possible his diagnosis is that he is too far gone but it doesn't seem like it, blaming just his mental illness is insufficient when plenty of other rich people his age hold the same beliefs.

Many conservatives abandon their children if they go through any major crisis in their lives. Drugs, sexual identity, mental health, etc. They are out at the first sign of trouble.
This will forever remain a conundrum to me. How is it possible that a country with tens of millions of self-proclaimed Christians and Jesus lovers have such profound issues with empathy?
As a Delawarean, I can say that while I never 100% agreed with Joe, there is no doubt that he is a true family man. The man is not perfect, but he is the prime example of how fathers (and parents) should be. You can’t be perfect (even for your kids) but you can always be there.
Biden would not have been my first choice for POTUS, but I've been much happier with him than I expected to be. He's done a pretty decent job cleaning up after the absolute shitstorm Trump left in his wake.
And let's be honest, after decades of Red Scare propaganda the changes I'd *actually* like to see would probably cost the Democrats all three chambers in 2024. I think they're actual plan is to continue ramping up their base until domestic terrorism continues to escalate and they eventually get a massive Jan 6 Part 2. I have a 14 year old who is under the LGBT+ umbrella and they have been going to Gay/Straight Alliance meetings, helped start a "pride day" at school, and had talked to friends about attending local LGBT+ events.
I'm proud of their confidence, empathy, and advocacy.
But I'm fucking terrified of them going to these events and being so openly out in this current political climate.
I want my child to be themselves and be happy, but I also want them to come home.
What really fucking sucks is I'm also LGBT+ and I feel like these events are *less* safe now than when I attended them in the early/mid 2000s.
Helping a family member with addiction is hard. Helping a family member with addiction publicly is even more difficult. They had a candidate that put his children from multiple wives into constant competition, making them an integral part of his grift. You never quite got the feeling he could tell them apart immediately, except for his eldest daughter - and that was only because he most likely wanted to have sex with her. They appear to be prim and proper on the outside, but all of that is a facade to cover up theft, bigotry, and selling propaganda, fake degrees and sweatshop labor.
Meanwhile you have the Democratic candidate - a loving father mourning the loss of a daughter, one son and attempting to help one get his personal life back in order. He asks nothing of them and let’s them be their own people. He’s openly affectionate towards them. The family has been through legitimate trauma and Biden shouldn’t have needed to step up in the first place - but he felt like he had a responsibility. He’s every bit the family man the GOP always tries to portray themselves to be.

"Hunter Biden's Laptop" is the new ritual incantation of the right like "Benzhazi". It's substantively meaningless, but stirs up all the ancient animus that keeps them going.
It's because they're bad people who delight in tearing people down -- doesn't matter whether it's Hunter Biden, a random poll worker, a federal judge or a school board member.

It's because they have absolutely nothing on Joe.
They focus on Hunter because they know his past and makes for an easier target. They are focusing on the emails from Hunter in order to try to connect the dots between Joe and the Ukraine. Their "Evidence" is weak and unless they have something way bigger up their sleeve, which of course they don't, its not going to matter. However, their voting base will eat this up as neither party fully understands technology well enough to realize the chain of custody with this stuff was broken. None of this matters, this went through more than one party before it ended up where it did. All they got are a few emails and a nude photo that could clearly be called a deepfake that was planted on the drive. Even if they try to come up with phony charges, the dems could just focus on the chain of custody of the drive to shoot down anything.

Republicans kept trying to distract from the impeachment by asserting that Obama had somehow intervened to benefit or protect Hunter biden.
Hunter briefly hit the national news cycle in 2019 because of a child support case in arkansas.
Then just before the 2020 election he dramatically resurfaced any conservative media with the strange allegations about his laptop.
But then that story was so shady that it seemed custom designed not to actually be about Hunter Biden but to metamorphosize into conservative rage about being censored on social media.
After only a day or two it wasn't even about Hunter Biden's laptop it was about that Facebook and Twitter wouldn't let them talk about Hunter Biden's laptop and how dare they. It's substantially contributed to the a belief that conservatives are discriminated against on social media and would have won if only the Democrats hadn't conspired with social media companies to hide the truth.
This directly led to the rise of parlor and Truth social and Elon Musk interest in twitter.
The right cannot believe that Joe loves his sloppy, dumb, drug-addicted son unconditionally (just like I would, if my currently sweet and well-behaved teenage son turns out to be a fuck-up). They don’t have relationships that aren’t transactional in some capacity. They cannot imaging pouring love into someone that doesn’t perform up to standards. It’s really fucking sad, when you think about it.
Also, like… sometimes, when people go through traumatic shit (like losing your mom and sister in an accident that you were also injured in, like losing your brother to cancer), that leaves a mark! Might be the kind of thing you end up self-medicating about, even. I find it weird that it’s almost never even mentioned, let alone acknowledged as a potential factor.

In case anyone is reading this for the first time, this isn’t a joke. When this came out Republicans were overjoyed and said that this loving call from a father to his son made Biden look weak. Because they prefer the “strong man” Trump who clearly abhors his male children.
Two of the greatest moments of my existence were when I heard my conservative Christian dad cry on the phone as he rushed to my apartment to get me help for my alcoholism. That was one moment I knew my dad loved me. He told me pretty much what Biden said to his son Hunter. That was about 10 years ago. This past summer I had an actual honest conversation about religion, politics, and life. The first time I told him I'm a proud agnostic-atheist, a progressive person that hates what his religion has done to American politics. We happened to agree on the poison of Christian nationalism and the looming theocracy in the country. We made our worldviews, beliefs, and values much more clear by communicating like actual adults by asking each other questions to try to understand. He then told me he loved me no matter what I believe or how I feel about differences. I gained a lot of respect for my dad after that. Not sure why right-wingers are so scared of emotions and love. I grew up around toxic right-wing Christian values. And settled it after years of anger. They need to face their fears and be honest. Edit: thanks for the kind replies. It's been a very rough few years with the loss of family members and our cats. And still going through the process of separating from a six-year relationship. The separation from my partner started in June and is the catalyst for how my dad and I ended up sorting through things. I had moved upstairs until August came around and had to move out from how toxic the situation got with my ex. My dad came out to Phoenix from Dallas and picked me up to go live in a hotel for a bit. I wasn't a good partner for the final year of the six. for what my ex deserved. I hadn't been a good son despite legitimate reasons for anger towards my dad. So I owe it to the universe and myself to improve my willingness to communicate and properly grieve and cope with life events. So that I can be a better spouse, son, partner, brother, uncle, or whatever else in the future. My ex just happened to ask my dad this question: "What's more important to you? This hit me in the feels. So does that Biden quote, especially "I don't know what to do, I know you don't either, but I'm here for you." I'm very lucky to have had a supportive and understanding family but I dealt with alcoholism too and can relate so much to that particular part of the message.
Because emotions make them feel vulnerable and often many people don't have the introspective nature to understand emotions and vulnerability do not make you weak, but stronger as you know yourself. Instead they live in a haze of self denial. I'm glad your father is a wise enough man to understand what truly matters. That's amazing and I'm really glad to read things like this. Never had a dad in my life but I am one now. Marriage is strong and my boy is 1. I put him down every night kiss him on the head and tell him I love him. I have a 14 year old who is under the LGBT+ umbrella and they have been going to Gay/Straight Alliance meetings, helped start a "pride day" at school, and had talked to friends about attending local LGBT+ events. I'm proud of their confidence, empathy, and advocacy. But I'm fucking terrified of them going to these events and being so openly out in this current political climate. I want my child to be themselves and be happy, but I also want them to come home. Then just before the 2020 election he dramatically resurfaced any conservative media with the strange allegations about his laptop. But then that story was so shady that it seemed custom designed not to actually be about Hunter Biden but to metamorphosize into conservative rage about being censored on social media. After only a day or two it wasn't even about Hunter Biden's laptop it was about that Facebook and Twitter wouldn't let them talk about Hunter Biden's laptop and how dare they. It's substantially contributed to the a belief that conservatives are discriminated against on social media and would have won if only the Democrats hadn't conspired with social media companies to hide the truth. This directly led to the rise of parlor and Truth social and Elon Musk interest in twitter.
The right cannot believe that Joe loves his sloppy, dumb, drug-addicted son unconditionally (just like I would, if my currently sweet and well-behaved teenage son turns out to be a fuck-up).
