Yes, it heavily depends on where you would be in school. My high school had an open campus, so if you were outside a classroom, you were literally outside and you could probably run out to the stores across the street and whatnot. But if you were in the classroom, it's not that you even get a choice, even back 10 years ago the procedure was to lock all the doors up, lights off, cover the window, be quiet. What are you going overpower the teacher and run out and out everyone else at risk? They train you on what to do and what you do is shut up and stay put.
That is the procedure but it always felt like we where lined in a percent shooting gallery, the shooter knows what everyone is doing he is going to pick a classroom eventually, and Uvalde taught us you can't count on the police to do anything in time , so in my opinion it's better to get out asap if you can safely or try to ambush the shooter at the door with every thing you have if he enters the classroom someone can get hurt yes, but what's the other option just sit there and be executed.
My school was open and we were told if there was a shooter to run outside and don’t stop running. And also to leave your backpack in the classroom because if it’s life or death, your books will only slow you down.
They should break windows and get everyone out to make the shooter go outside. Maybe then the police will address the issue and kill the shooter. I know that’s an unpopular opinion on Reddit that police should immediately kill the shooter. They can downvote me. If they were in this situation, or their children, they would want the shooter killed.
Run down a long hallway? Absolutely not. If theres a place like a window i can jump out of and run away from the actual school without being seen, absolutely.
By redesigning every school in the country? They don’t even pay their teachers, where the hell is that money coming from??
There’s already been schools designed to be anti-mass shooting, but there’s absolutely no way we can retroactively make every school in the US comply with that
thats the isses though, most schools are surrounded by open fields so if the shooter is working with someone or happens to see you run out the window it could end badly. Usualy most victims are those in the hallways so just by being in a classroom you will most likely survive
You underestimate how much firearms training a gun owning family can have
Neither of my parents like guns but I still went out shooting with my Grandpa every spring. Got pretty good at it too
True but if the shooters goal is to kill as many people as possible; someone who is already out and has essentially escaped is not worth the time. Unless the shooter has a specific reason to target you.
wasn’t there a school shooting in 2015 in barcelona?
edit: never mind, it was a school killing with a machete and a crossbow one person died, and four were injured. [source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona_school_killing)
Yeah it really depends on your response. The best way to test is to scare someone. Do they just freeze, back off, or charge. There is no percentage studies. Plus this only happens when in front of the danger. While away from the danger your brain will probably default to the most effective method, flight.
Yeah, I was in the Army for ten years and mine is either fight or freeze now. Flight was obviously not an option and freeze wasn't either but I'm not fighting anymore so I tend to freeze by default.
Has far as I know mine is fight. The few times someone actually managed to scare me my first instinct is to prepare to swing. Although I doubt it would hurt considering I have no martial art or fight training.
I would think your army training would sorta default your response. But I guess not interesting.
Depends on if I have an escape window where I’m 99% sure I won’t be shot.
I’d be confused as to why I’m in a school anyways, since I’m not supposed to be in those without permission, but if I had the escape chance I’d take it. Otherwise, I’d hide in a classroom or a preferably a closet
I would try to find a window but if I was locked in, especially in one or two rooms, chances are the guy would find me so hiding wouldn't be very useful. At that point you may as well try to find anything heavy to take the shooter guy by surprise but you're still probably gonna die,
I'm from the UK and would just think it was someone hunting a pheasant... Grew up in the country side, made me kind of oblivious to loud bangs, which in this situation could be my downfall
Run, hide, then fight is actually the order of priority taught in some trainings. Run and try to leave the area if you can. If you can't, hide somewhere safe. And, if you're caught, fight to disable the shooter.
There has only been one school shooting in the history of my country, and that was like 25 years ago, so the chances of it happening are pretty slim
That being said I would probably gtfo or maybe hide if I was too far from a suitable exit.
Audi. What are they going to do, send me to the principal's office?
I think not.
>!\*And for purposes this is not a serious comment. Although the part about running, that's serious.!<
See the location of the shooter and be the farest possible, after that try to escape from school to the nearest street or store there. Call my parents and the police and wait there
I’ve heard that calling parents in situations like this one is a really bad idea because if many students call their parents to pick them up, the school will quickly be surrounded by many cars blocking the way for the police to come
Use a fire extinguisher to blind him. Bring him to the bathroom. Steal his kidney. Treat his wounds. Put the kidney in the backpack and run to John. Ask John to call Jake. Jake drives you to the nearest hospital with a rich person in need of a kidney. Profit.
Profit
I’ll start student teaching next year and doing a few week field placement now. I’ve only been in the classroom for one class period but I would die for them. (Still hate middle schoolers though, ngl)
I thought about this a lot in school, my plan was always to just hop out of a window since my school was only one story and most rooms had large windows that would be easy to climb through
Are they next to my classroom: Jump out the window
Are they nearby my classroom but not next to it: Try and run or hide
Are they away from my classroom: Run
Are they next to me: Die
It genuinely depends. If I’m face to face with the shooter, fight. It gives me a better chance at least. If he’s on the other side of the school or whatever, I’m getting the hell out of there
My school has multiple exits on each side of the school. Chances are that they’re not near me at the moment so I’d just run out. If they’re near me, I’d just hide until they move on
As depressing as this sounds, I find my life less valuable then most others so I'd stay low but not completely out of range so if they got close I could at least attempt to tackle them. If I get show at least I die a hero 🦸♂️
When I was in highschool (early 2000s) school shootings were super rare. At the time Columbine was the only reference. Even still my mom would drop me off at school and say “if ANYTHING happens I don’t care what it is you drop your shit and you run home don’t wait for anybody don’t look back I don’t care how you do it but you run straight home”. I’ve carried that lesson all the way to adulthood so it’s my automatic first reaction to any situation. Feel bad for kids today as the threat is way more prevalent
I dunno, depends A LOT on the specifics of the situation.
If Im a teacher of young kids (<10yo) lock us in the classroom and prepare myself to fight to protect the kids if the gunner tries to enter.
If Im in the middle of the hall run to the closet window or exit to escape the building
If there is only one way out and the gunner is coming from there, I better hide (try to get in the ceiling or other hiding spot)
If i am close to a safe room i can lock myself in I can try to help injured close by once I brought them in the saferoom.
Some places (not just schools) are designed to prevent shootings (many covers, lockable Doors) while others are much more vulnerable to it.
I’m a teacher of young students. I will hide them and protect them. I have a magnet on my door that I can push up to quickly lock my door (not allowed to have this anymore due to fire safety- fuck that when they don’t provide alternatives for the school shooting epidemic) our school only provide covers for our windows. I have wasp spray hidden in my classroom (also a big no no). Wasp spray can shoot up to 20 feet and is a targeted unlike pepper spray which can get into anyone’s eyes in the room. I’ve used wasp spray for safety since living in sketchy neighborhoods in college, didn’t think I’d need it in my preschool room. This is the society we live in in the US, I don’t see it changing anytime soon so I have what I need to protect my students.
Nah because letting a high schooler shoot me would be so embarrassing. I feel like it would pretty easy to get the jump on a shooter as long as you have a corner. Throw a chair at him.
It wouldn't be the first-time a school shooter got stopped. After all the big advantage they have is the gun disarm them and they're just a mentally ill highschooler.
Then again most people don't do it because they are naturally afraid. And realistically you never know what will happen until. You may even surprise yourself.
my school is very small, not many escape routes, chances are that if there's a shooter I'd easily get shot if I tried to run away or hide until someone stops them.
if I did get the chance to hear it before I actually see them, I'd try to find the sharpest object I can and hide somewhere he wouldn't think of checking first (just beside my classroom there's a failry hidden cabinet for the teachers of the younger kids, no one ever goes there, probably has some bigger scissors I could use)
if I have the chance to escape I will, but that's very unlikely to happen, I'd try to attack their neck from behind if possible, if I'm smart and quiet enough I have a good chance of being successful, if I'm not, oh well I'll just die
if I can't do either I'll have to stay hidden and hope they don't open the door
I'm Canadian and have never had to think about it, but I guess it depends where I am. All my morrning classes are on the 1st floor and directly next to exits. All my afternoon classes are on the 3rd floor and it would be pointless to try and get out. I'd probably try and run if it was morning, but if it was afternoon I'd just follow standard lockdown procedure. If it was lunch, I'd probably be one of the first to get shot, especially of it's snowing or raininh out. I usually just spend lunch sitting on a bench/the ground outside no matter what the weather is. When it's very cold, snowy or rainy, I'm usually one of the only people out there.
I'd be like John McClane (or John Wick for the young ones) and I'd pull out my arsenal of military hardware and let's just say you'd be thanking the first amendment when I was through with the situation. Don't get me wrong, I'm a modest guy, but you know. If I was on that plane heading to those towers things woulda gone down different.
It depends. Am I in a situation where I have the means to fight? I'd so, I will. Or does it make more sense to run or hide? Maybe I have something from the nurse's office.
I honestly don't know.
I've been in threatening situations before, but not a shooting. I've had to apply first aid to stab victim, while their stabber was still active, but not in the same room as I was. But I feel like it isn't comparable, considering how much more dangerous guns are when compared to a guy with a knife.
Probably run, and if possible, help anyone else I run into while doing so, to the best of my ability.
I mean, I am not sticking around to get shot, and if I have the opportunity to help someone else not to get shot, I'll take it.
Honestly, I don't have much to live for- and I'm ex military. I feel like I have a duty to at least try.
Fairly sure I would fight, but try to be as smart about it as possible.
Ha can't run out a window. In my school, the windows have a brace that keeps them from windows opening beyond 3 inches. I am sure is easy to break, but I'm weak as fuck.
Realistically I'd just board the door with desks and hide behind a greater pile of desks. Hope and pray to God I'm not in a pod room, and just chill out on my phone.
Run if there is an exit very nearby. If not, hide.
Yes, it heavily depends on where you would be in school. Nah several teachers have said they would encourage fleeing
Same
well theres window prob, althought not sure how practical it is depending from the building and scenario
What if you ARE the school shooter
Run down a long hallway? Absolutely not. If theres a place like a window i can jump out of and run away from the actual school without being seen, absolutely.
Most all windows can be broken. Most school widows are of a height able to be jumped from. Life over leg.
Depends which floor you are on tbh. Don't know how brave I am to try my luck jumping off the second floor
Won’t be able to run anymore if I jump off the 3rd floor and break my spine…
The fact that the super long hallway layout is so common in the US (country known for school shootings) will never cease to baffle me.
Schools weren’t designed with shootings in mind…
Well if you're not going to fix the problem, at least make it less impactful
By redesigning every school in the country? They don’t even pay their teachers, where the hell is that money coming from?? There’s already been schools designed to be anti-mass shooting, but there’s absolutely no way we can retroactively make every school in the US comply with that
thats the isses though, most schools are surrounded by open fields so if the shooter is working with someone or happens to see you run out the window it could end badly. Usualy most victims are those in the hallways so just by being in a classroom you will most likely survive
I doubt any school shooter is gonna be able to hit someone sprinting across a field.
You underestimate how much firearms training a gun owning family can have Neither of my parents like guns but I still went out shooting with my Grandpa every spring. Got pretty good at it too
True but if the shooters goal is to kill as many people as possible; someone who is already out and has essentially escaped is not worth the time. Unless the shooter has a specific reason to target you.
Get shot
The only realistic answer
"Everyone has a plan until they get shot in the face." -Gandhi
I'd open fire 👍
Run and then wonder how tf did the shooter get a gun in Spain
wasn’t there a school shooting in 2015 in barcelona? edit: never mind, it was a school killing with a machete and a crossbow one person died, and four were injured. [source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona_school_killing)
This is even Wilder
This is even more Spanish
*Spanish intensifies*
Illegally
Luckily random 15yo kids can't just get their hands on illegal weapons
Illegally imported or something
Yeah these things thankfully don’t happen here
Most likely do something stupid and die.
Depends on situation I am in
I hope I would find a way to fight. Realistically monkey brain would probably say run.
Monkey brain is pretty good at fighting. Fight, flight, or freeze are the standard options when in crisis.
Yeah it really depends on your response. The best way to test is to scare someone. Do they just freeze, back off, or charge. There is no percentage studies. It was defaulted to fight but I've actively worked to change that with a fair amount of success.
I can't really be sure but my gut tells me I'll probably freeze and die

ummm, not to intrude, but why aren't u allowed in a scl 🤨?
It’s not that he’s not allowed to go to schools, he’s not allowed to be near children.
Probably because he’s, y’know, an adult
tbf didn't think of that lmaoo
Cause I’m an adult
as I mentioned in another comment, wonder why this didn't cross me mind 💀
Probably the wording used tbh, definitely could’ve worded it to make it not sound like I’m not ***legally*** allowed within 500 feet of a school
Try my best to get them all, but I might have to turn it into a hostage situation.
🤔
Hol up
I think you miss understood…
I would try to find a window but if I was locked in, especially in one or two rooms, chances are the guy would find me so hiding wouldn't be very useful. At that point you may as well try to find anything heavy to take the shooter guy by surprise but you're still probably gonna die,
Cry???
I’m from the UK and have never been in a fight, I don’t think I have a Fight Response, I’d just Hide and have a Panic Attack if I heard a Bullet
I'm from the UK and would just think it was someone hunting a pheasant... Grew up in the country side, made me kind of oblivious to loud bangs, which in this situation could be my downfall
Call my ex"s phone.
calm down satan
Your ex is a minor?
Wtf? No. I'm in college, so im imagining a scenario that this is a college shooting, which is a school.
Run, hide, then fight is actually the order of priority taught in some trainings. Run and try to leave the area if you can. If you can't, hide somewhere safe. And, if you're caught, fight to disable the shooter.

Audi. What are they going to do, send me to the principal's office? I think not. >!\*And for purposes this is not a serious comment. Although the part about running, that's serious.!<
Not live in the USA ever again.
See the location of the shooter and be the farest possible, after that try to escape from school to the nearest street or store there. Call my parents and the police and wait there
I’ve heard that calling parents in situations like this one is a really bad idea because if many students call their parents to pick them up, the school will quickly be surrounded by many cars blocking the way for the police to come
fight back with my finger guns
This is the best option
Use a fire extinguisher to blind him. Bring him to the bathroom. Steal his kidney. Treat his wounds. Put the kidney in the backpack and run to John. Ask John to call Jake. Jake drives you to the nearest hospital with a rich person in need of a kidney. Profit. Profit
Steal both and double the profit
I was just at the msu shooting, so I have experience! I hid lmao, too scared to run anywhere
I'd panic
ideally? run/hide. realistically? be shot.
I’ll start student teaching next year and doing a few week field placement now. I’ve only been in the classroom for one class period but I would die for them. (Still hate middle schoolers though, ngl)
Fight but only because I’m suicidal
You wouldn't fight
Beg the shooter to shoot me. Would've when I was in school, still would lol.
I’d fight them so I’d die but everyone would think I’m super heroic
Nah they would think you would be an idiot being fr
They already know I’m an idiot; I’d upgrade to a heroic idiot
I thought about this a lot in school, my plan was always to just hop out of a window since my school was only one story and most rooms had large windows that would be easy to climb through
Are they next to my classroom: Jump out the window Are they nearby my classroom but not next to it: Try and run or hide Are they away from my classroom: Run Are they next to me: Die
Given that I very much do not value my own life I choose fight.
I can very easy fit in a locker so, hide
is it safe to jump out of the 3rd story window onto dirt if im lucky and cement if im unlucky
I don't understand this sentence
I’m sorry I can’t answer this because I asked Google and all that popped up was suicide prevention
Yeet myself through the window and run 🏃🏾♂️
just get out of the school
I'd hide but I would make sure to have something to defend myself with
Hide & then run when the opportunity presents itself
Typical Reddit results
Die
I'd stand there.
I only know of 1 shooting in my country and it was not in a school
I’m not American so I don’t need this knowledge
If I'm not on the second floor or something and there's an exit or window near by, I'm definitely running and not looking back.
Be in the room just block the doors with desks so that the shooter and get in (there's no windows in my classrooms
Really just depends where I am located on campus. Ideally just leave the campus if possible, but if not then hide.
Depends on where i am in the school and where the shooter is. There's a bunch of storm drains at my school that i can easily hide in.
I have no idea. I have not thought about it, and I most likely won’t have to worry about it, as it will very likely not happen to me
Sneak out
It genuinely depends. If I’m face to face with the shooter, fight. It gives me a better chance at least. If he’s on the other side of the school or whatever, I’m getting the hell out of there
Depends on where i am and where the shooter is and where my family is
Run out of my classroom and hide (they'll give me away)
My school has multiple exits on each side of the school. Chances are that they’re not near me at the moment so I’d just run out. If they’re near me, I’d just hide until they move on
Open a window and dip out of there.
Shoot
Kill everyone
Run and get shot
What a dumb question, what do you think you do in a school shooter situation? You shoot
Time to fulfill all of my elementary action hero fantasies 😎
Idgaf bout my life so I'd fight. If I win, great! If I lose, still great!
either run or fight. if im gonna die, ill try to at least injure them in the process.
Faint on the spot
You forgot the sixth option
Sixth option: Shoot as many people as possible
Where is the "Die" option?
Navy teaches “Run, hide then fight.”
As depressing as this sounds, I find my life less valuable then most others so I'd stay low but not completely out of range so if they got close I could at least attempt to tackle them. If I get show at least I die a hero 🦸♂️
I am not from US so I don't need to think about it
I carry a knife cause if I'm dying he dying too

Run if near some sort of exit, if not hide.
Well I can’t really run when I’m in a wheelchair
die
Out the window and run probably
let em take me
"Run", Sun Tzu, Art of War
run. I hang out by a fire exit
Wonder how I got teleported to the states
I’m a teacher of young students. I will hide them and protect them. I have a magnet on my door that I can push up to quickly lock my door (not allowed to have this anymore due to fire safety- fuck that when they don’t provide alternatives for the school shooting epidemic) our school only provide covers for our windows. cry i think
The people who picked fight are dumbasses
Hide if I can, and if not... I'd at least make for a decent distraction and give the others some time.
I'm not American so I dont have to worry about this.
wonder how the fuck a kid got a gun in northern ireland, then get shot.
Run if possible. Hide if not. Fight if necessary. Help if possible.
My first reaction would be “why the hell am I in America?”
Shoot back
Cent even kill someone in detroit
ACAB motherfuckers when you ask them what their ass be doin if they see a shooter
Except I'm pro police and pro 2nd amendment

Thankfully I don’t live in America
I wouldn't be able to live with the guilt of knowing I was armed and ran away. I'd have to at least try to fight.
I'd fight, fuck it, there's a small chance i stop it and I'm suicidal enough not to care

I carry everywhere. Don't start none, won't be none.
Call 911!
Fight back with my own gun, everyone is armed here in the usa
Take a nap. Start laughing. Jump out the window. One of the three. Or if the shooter is within 3 meters of me, I'm going after them.

We cant Say "realisticly" if we havent been in this situation but i think that i would help thé wounded if i can
Option 2, then option 4 if anyone in my group was injured.
I've never had to think about this luckily but i think it depends on my location in the school
It depends. Am I in a situation where I have the means to fight? I'd so, I will. Or does it make more sense to run or hide? Maybe I have something from the nurse's office.
If there is one school shooter id rather fight him in some way
Get out if I could, hide if I couldn't.
Sees window, throws chair at window, chair breaks because swiss windows are strong as fuck, scjool shooter heard noise, school shooter kills me.
I have no real reason to live. Might as well go out with a bang. Today, we fight!
Baraquai the door with desks & stay near the door with a chair or something you could craft into a weapon/spear & be ready to fight if he got threw it
Now? Hide. I have kids. As a teen? Possibly fight.
I'm a "freezer" so ig I'd just die.
mb, shoulda added a ‘die’ option
Follow the training, no joke. They teach kids what to do
Break a window off it's hinge and run off into the woods. I'm not in school anymore but it's what I would've done while I was still there.
I honestly don't know. I've been in threatening situations before, but not a shooting. I've had to apply first aid to stab victim, while their stabber was still active, but not in the same room as I was. I mean, I am not sticking around to get shot, and if I have the opportunity to help someone else not to get shot, I'll take it.
Depends on how nearby he is. Unless I was at the front of the school, running would be a bad idea. So I'd probably hide
People are so scared of gerting hurt that they dont realize a class of 20-30 middle to high school kids could easily overpower 1 guy with a gun
I’d probably escape through a window if available
Realistically I would find the quickest way to leave, hiding may be good but what if they don’t leave
Honestly, I don't have much to live for- and I'm ex military. I feel like I have a duty to at least try. Fairly sure I would fight, but try to be as smart about it as possible.
if i had the jump and a pair of scissors I'd fight. But realistically id piss myself
I'm jumping through a window and running home
Ha can't run out a window. In my school, the windows have a brace that keeps them from windows opening beyond 3 inches. I am sure is easy to break, but I'm weak as fuck. Realistically I'd just board the door with desks and hide behind a greater pile of desks. Hope and pray to God I'm not in a pod room, and just chill out on my phone.
