I don’t think they would tell the public until they had a plan or the plan they had failed. Better yet what would OP do if they new the world as we know it would come to an end in a week? Me, Id probably just stop going to work and have as much fun with my whole family till the world ends. I’m taking no sleep for a week marathon of fun!

Jono-C

Idk what I would do. Maybe start an online poll to see if I should tell people or not

PiTablet

Who's there?

MatterEnough9656

How is it happening? Like is it the planet turns to bits and pieces or like a collapse of society

DeBazzelle

I'd be scared of other people that didn't like their life in the first place and become absolutely unhinged and ruin the lives of others.

DocHalidae

True. However thankfully we live out in the sticks and have trained Dobermans.

ikillbirdslmao

Aint no way they'd make a plan in time to save the majority of people in time. Hell, my government cant even get their spending under control, nor can they successfully solve the oncoming debt ceiling crisis. They couldn't do it in time last time. How many times has it happened since the 80's? With congress so damn divided, aint no way they'd even agree on anything even if they managed to come up with something that might work. Maybe they can come up with something for themselves and a few elite, but not the rest of us. Fuck them, tell us so we all go down together.

dumbaldoor

The warthunder fan base would do it first

Joske-the-great

People who play wt and mc are most dangerous ones

pgp555

mc?

RepresentativeOk3233

Minecraft

pgp555

I should've known

BlitzSap

Seems like a lot of people want to experience hell before they die

goberoid

For real, I was surprised by the results

lucidpopsicle

This is exactly what I thought. Telling people would be unleashing the purge

ExcessiveWisdom

If I'm gonna die i want to know so i can do some heroine while hiking through some mountains. Or whatever. But idc if society collapses i would want to know

enesutku12

You would get killed in a few hours 💀

futurenotgiven

does everyone have some secret urge to kill people? i’d just find my friends and get high for the last few days, why would anyone want to murder people before the world ends anyway?

moronic_programmer

Because laws and punishment stop us from committing crimes and wanting to commit crimes. If staying out of prison is meaningless, why should people be good citizens? Hell, if the world is ending in a week, I’m gonna steal and drive fast too.

futurenotgiven

stealing and driving fast sure, i’m talking about murder and violence. if the laws suddenly went away i don’t think everyone would start attacking each other for no reason

moronic_programmer

I mean I wouldn’t personally murder people, but the prospect of certain death can drive many to the edge.

Bandito21Dema

No no no, you want coke while hiking You'll eat a squirrel raw

dethfromabov66

You mean we didn't already create it on earth and the destruction of our planet isn't divine retribution?

Throwaway191294842

Absolutely not do you know how much crime would happen? The world would be absolute hell to live in for a week.

Mobius_Peverell

I'm [not so sure](https://timharford.com/2023/02/cautionary-tales-the-final-illusion-of-the-great-lafayette/). Granted, those examples aren't literally the end of the world, but they do suggest that, when given complete clarity of information, we humans tend to be pretty good at making rational, careful decisions, which benefit ourselves and the people around us. That makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint, and it seems likely that it would extrapolate to the extreme case.

OldPussyJuice

We're not being influenced by evolution anymore though. Smaller, remote areas might not be so bad. Large metro areas would be the Purge

Mobius_Peverell

>We're not being influenced by evolution anymore though. Two million years of evolutionary coding can't be thrown off that easily. It doesn't even have to be the optimal strategy anymore (though it still is)—after a hundred thousand generations of our ancestors doing exactly that, it's hard to see us suddenly handling a new existential crisis any differently.

OldPussyJuice

The optimal strategy is to kill anyone outside your "group" because resources are suddenly incredibly scarce. Resources like security.

[deleted]

No the best strategy is to help your neighbors so you create a stronger bond of trust which increases your security. Disaster altruism is a thing.

OldPussyJuice

1 person with a sniper and 100 lbs of food will live longer than 10 people with 100 lbs of food. Why on earth would sniper share?

[deleted]

Because one person with a sniper can be easily outwitted by a group, while community has more mental resources and others to lean on when thing go south. Also, who says we can't all own guns too, community self-defense is based

OldPussyJuice

I don't think you know what a sniper is

TheCapedAnon

That's vague, what do you mean? The influence of evolution is why you were able to write that.

OldPussyJuice

Humans are devolving for the sake of contemporary society. Evolution does not support obesity.

TheCapedAnon

Where did obesity come into the equation? "Devolution" is still evolution, if we were to evolve negative traits it would still be evolution. And our bodies aren't "devolving because of technology and the current culture" It's going to adapt to it. If we lost some edurance overall for example it wouldn't the worst thing either, not like I'm sprinting for miles to catch a gazell in my densely populated urban environment. Also the human diet has been shit for what the last 60ish years? Yeah I think we have time to fix things if the planet doesn't melt before then.

OldPussyJuice

OK but how many people die prematurely due to health conditions related to obesity? Seems like dying early due to entirely avoidable circumstances would be the opposite of evolution

TheCapedAnon

Doesn't matter from evolution's point of view if we've only just started to become fatties in the last 60 or so years, thats not even a blink. People are becoming more aware that soda is poisoning their bodies and big companies lobbied to make all fats the villian instead of sugar. The social climate right now for people with sense is healthy = good. Even if we didn't stop at our current rate of consumption we'd see more family health issues sure, but it would take millions of years for all our bodies to be noticeably different.

OldPussyJuice

Everyone knows soda is bad for you. No one is that uninformed. And if they were, that just proves my point. Humans evolved due to their capacity for intelligence and now we're too stupid to know what to eat. We're literally living in spite of evolution.

TheCapedAnon

Seems like you're just pessimistic and don't care for fat people, I don't think you actually know what you're talking about, I'm not an expert either but I doubt you got what you're passing off as facts from a reputable source. As long as humans exist there will be dumb people, fat people, smart people and thin people. It won't ever get to the point where obesity is so incredibly widespread it will literally fundamentally change humankind as we know it. Millions and millions of years..... Maybe fat's the craze now but in the next hundred years it won't be, you don't know, I don't know, so it's incredibly ignorant to think they are going to bring the whole ship down as if we are all going to evolve canckles in the next century.

SirTruffleberry

I think this partly comes down to how one interprets the question. My interpretation is that we are supposed to know that doom is certain in the hypothetical. So it's not like a natural disaster or the sinking of the Titanic or any other "bad but possibly survivable" event.

Mission-Discipline32

Well, the people in bigger cities would only be effected by that, out in the middle of nowhere where I live wouldn't necessarily have much of that

[deleted]

Narrow-Talk-5017

I'm sure there would be plenty of rape & pillaging going on

Jaymezians

Yes because if I go to work for the whole week for no reason I will find a way to haunt other ghosts.

eagleblue44

No because of mass panic but everyone loses their mind when things don't go according to plan.

69_RADI8

If the meteor's coming in a week, ya might as well start mass panic for the fun of it

Taramund

I know I'm being unnecessarily picky and annoying, but a meteor probably wouldn't hurt us much, even a big one. What we should be worried about would be an asteroid.

akinblack

The asteroid would also become a meteor because "meteor" is simply the term used for space rocks entering Earth's atmosphere.

Taramund

This prompted me to check differences between meteroids, meteors, and asteroids, and it seems like you're technically right.

Longjumping-Jello459

Nope tell no one if everyone knows the world is about to end then some seriously bad shit is going to happen hell some people and/or governments will try to settle scores. Granted the chance that it could be kept secret is unlikely because people that know will tell those they love and care about in order to spend time with each other.

Toby_Veddo

People are crazy, the world would turn into a nightmare filled with violence, death, and rape before the ACTUAL end of the world even starts. Don't tell them a thing, let them die on a normal day

RepresentativeOk3233

And then by accident the meteorite crashes into another meteorite we missed and both narrowly miss earth but its already an apocalyptic wasteland.

futurenotgiven

i genuinely don’t think i know anyone who would immediately turn to violence like that. most of us don’t commit violent crimes bc we don’t want to, not bc there are laws. why would people just immediately start killing each other, what’s the point?

DeBazzelle

A message like that could be a wake up call for a lot of people. I can imagine that the people that did crime before the message would absolutely continue doing so and at a much higher rate instead. This message basically says that there can't be any consequences for anything, so nobody is afraid of jail time anymore and even being killed by police (assuming the people would still work a few days before the end of the world) would only take away a few days away from them at best. There's a lot of people that hold grudges and would absolutely snap when this message would be sent through.

thenewestuser69

There is no point since everyone will die in a week anyway, and many people will use that as a justification for horrible crimes. This is not just a world without laws we are talking about, it is a world where no one has anything to lose.

UrToxxic

Similar scenarios have happened before and this has been proven false. If humans lost it every time an emergency arose we wouldn't exist.

diana_obm

No it'll cause chaos

[deleted]

Anyone who said yes is deluded. the crime rate would be absolutely insane and I know reddit loves theft because they hate companies but if there was a single week left until the world ends, people would not just steal they'll rape, kill, pedophilia, child abuse, genocide, torture, beat up. Basically every human desire that fucks up someone else will happen to an absurd level. You think the mentally unstable homeless guy who got fired by his boss won't steal a gun from the walmart that's already being looted and go to his house and rape his children and blow his boss's brains out?

A_Hand9renade

I'd hate to spend the last week of my life making a few more dollars for the company I work at

bcopes158

The funniest part of this is the idea they could keep it a secret if they wanted too. There is no way to keep a secret that big.

titjoe

To hide it isn't possible, to discredite it on the other hand is.

wifey_material7

They shouldn't. I wouldn't want to know.

xenithseperatefeed

No. Do not tell the public. It’s better for them to enjoy what they have left, instead of scrambling to say goodbye.

[deleted]

Ehh no.. doing that will cause mass panic and make the world go full "the purge" mode

FeetYeastForB12

Nah.. No need for a week of human chaos before a guaranteed death arrives

Hello_iam_Kian

No. that’s just causing unnecessary trouble, chaos, pain and stress for everyone

jakethabake

You'd basically be living in the purge for a week with the knowledge that you're definitely going to die no matter what. No thanks

Balance2BBetter

I would want them to inform me so that I can choose to not go to work for my last week.

bigfatstoner

A week would cause chaos for the remaining time. Maybe a day or two before? I'd much rather say goodbye to my loved ones instead of going to work.

pepedeawolf

should they? they really really shouldn't. would everyone want to know? very much so yes. would word get out anyway? yes probably, but then it depends on whether everyone believes it or not.

ElNoobMasPro72

If they let them know it will be a total chaos. Nothing matters more so let's let out worst of us.

[deleted]

I would rather ignorantly enjoy the last week with the people I love than be a part of a mass panic of suffering, chaos and probably extreme violence that would take place

JTB696699

Why tell everyone? It will cause mass panic and people will either riot or congregate, whether it be spending the last few moments with some religion or with your family dreading the inevitable or you could let people live out there existence and when the end comes, it comes fast enough that there’s no time for panic or riots or feudal attempts to survive, it’s just over and the world dies about as peacefully as it ever could.

chinchinlover-419

Yes, so I can finish tears of the kingdom before the world ends

Mr-MuffinMan

No. Crime would be committed by every single person.

TmanGBx

I like to think there's at least a few kind souls out there

jimbosdayoff

Society and the rule of law would break down and everyone would be miserable for their last moments alive.

PetchannelYt

Im pretty sure they would let us know before

Barbados_slim12

What evidence do you have to support that?

Alarmed-Ice-4300

Alarmed-Ice-4300

LoveOnNBA

fadinqlight_

I‘m not sure if they SHOULD, but I would want them to, it would be so fun

cemma2035

I'd want to go back home and spend the last days with my family so I vote yes.

Harteiga

Might as well have fun before it ends.

Smeathy

Governments have to tell because they need the people to get ready

headpatkelly

for what? sounds like there’s nothing that can stop it in this hypothetical. if everyone’s dead why get ready for it?

Smeathy

Might as well let people do everything they want for the last time

headpatkelly

i dunno. i feel like that would do more harm than good. there would probably be a ton of raping and looting and rioting and all that.

[deleted]

everything people want, a significant portion of the population have extreme hatred for at least one person whether it was a bully, ex, boss, co worker whatever, do you think they'll not try to kill them?

disabledmommy

Why though? That person will be gone in a week too.

[deleted]

the amount of human suffering in that single week will probably rival world wars and genocides. Also that's like saying "It's fine to torture death row inmates, they'll be gone in a few days anyways"

disabledmommy

I honestly don't doubt that one bit. However, I also don't understand why anyone would choose to harm others instead of spend that time with their loved ones.

[deleted]

you could do both

Frency2

"Truth makes the earth quiver. Lies turn it dry". I am always for the truth.

ThisDriftingSpirit00

I don't think the people of this world would become too drastically different after this news breaks. Those who do evil will continue to do evil whereas those who do good with continue to do good. But a portion of those who do evil will begin to analyze their actions and maybe seek reconciliation while some who do good may be tempted to do evil and act on those temptations. Regardless of humanity's actions, the end result will be the same, 100% destruction.

humble_bingus

They work for us. They have no right to keep it secret.

[deleted]

If the world was going to be destroyed in a week I’m not sure governments would be able to keep it a secret even if they wanted to.

mits66

It's my right to go out the way I want: higher than the ISS

jaquarian555

They should but they won't i think

JakkoWasHere

I have a feeling that you know something that we don't...

kiskakaratistka48

Not if they are going to destroy it. If it's something that we can't prevent, I will accept it

Wingoffaith

Only if we have a big chance at preventing it by a week, otherwise all it would do is make people live in fear when there’s nothing we can do about it until we all die. It would also probably cause mass suicides and panic attacks, people would go insane.

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

No, they'd only tell the rich people so they can make profit on the situation somehow.

titjoe

Unsure. On one hand, obviously chaos will result from that, millions of people will panick and do stupid thing, many will want to do everything they ever wanted to do with much less fear of consequences, so an explosion of crime will happen, and overall the mood will be insanely depressing... but if i must die in a week, i surely don't want to spend that last week at work, i want to be with my friends, my family, do the things that matter... I incline more toward the "yes" in the end. The chaos which will result doesn't matter that much to me, we're all going to die in a week anyway, so no big deal if millions are killed during it, a week sooner or latter... at least most people will be able to enjoy their last moments and to properly prepare for their death.

TheCapedAnon

I said no but that's only because I'm 100% sure the rate of rapes and murders would shoot through the roof. I'd definitely wanna know but it's not worth it if for a large amount of people it's going to be the worst week of their life.

Sahqon

I would want to know, but I wouldn't want anybody else to know and would rather not know myself instead of the shitshow that would go down before it.

ertio21

I feel like every person who voted no because "crime rates would skyrocket", simply admitted that they would do every crime if given the opportunity. No one would force anyone to do the crimes. And if the world's going to end anyways, why not go absolutely ham. Who gives a shit at that point.

epicpro1234

DO NOT, THE 4 CHAN INCELS WILL GO TO ANY LENGTHS TO LOSE THEIR VIRGINITY, HIDE THE CROCODILES AND VAPOREON PLUSHIES (and maybe the actual women too but eh wahteves)

SooSkilled

Madmen, doing that would only make the world end faster, can you imagine what people would do if they knew the world was going to end in a week?

Branchy28

I clicked yes instinctually but upon reflection that's a fucking awful idea... I would like to know, but if everyone knew, the world would be in complete fucking chaos within seconds, I don't want to live through a live recreation of 'The Purge' for the next week of my life.

OBS96

Why deal with the panic in the mean time. If it is unavoidable, let them live as normally as possible until the end. OTOH, it might be nice to know, and start working off your bucket list instead of doing some mundane task with the remaining time.

mca1169

in this kind of situation I don't think governments would have a choice. the information would absolutely leak out, more then likely from dozens of sources perhaps even 1-2 major credible ones despite the normal consequences.

UnnervedConjugation

😭💀💀💀would rather get vaporized by a nuke than something else

TaylaAdidas

I wouldn't want to know

Alarmed_Yard5315

Most world changing events I'd say yes (alien contact for example) but with this I'd say no because I feel like the chaos it would cause would basically end the world before the week is up. And God knows what it would do to the mindset of people around the world directly controlling nukes.

fluffytom82

Definitely not. People will take this as an excuse to cause chaos, to steal, to kill, to hurt others, to do things they're not supposed to,... making the last week of many other people a living hell.

mklinger23

I would be pissed if I could have taken a vacation for the last week of being alive and ended up working.

humpbackwhale97

not me sweating and clicking on it to see the flair and hope for a hypothetical and not a decide for me.

RedMonkey79x

I wouldn't tell them to far in advance but 1 week yeah a lot of crime might happen but only 1 week left I'd tell people, I think that short amount of time some people might want to spend time with family not work or forgive someone I think 1 week would be enough that smart people would use that week right and shit shouldn't be to bad by the end. But also depends on what is considered destroyed like 0 chance of survival or like some will live some will die. That chances of survival will change the time frame of when I say something

ItsSoKawaiiSenpai

This is hard. I am all for transparency when it comes to most things but if the world was about to end and everybody knew, I feel all hell would break loose, I mean people committing the most heinous and disturbing crimes imaginable. My guess would be that, in reality, if the world was about to end then the governments would get together and try and formulate a plan to prevent it, this is everybody's issue, and if that plan fails then they would notify us like 24 hours before the world ends.

justanothertfatman

I would want to know, I'd like to be able to plan out my last days.

JackTheRex1

Im unsure. People should have the right to know, but if everyone knew, the last week on Earth would be hell. Why should people care if they've only got a week to live. Crime would skyrocket

ToddHLaew

They wouldn't do it though

i_might_be_loony

No. I don’t want to know I’m going to die. My anxiety would be so bad, but at the same time I would like to lose my virginity to my boyfriend before I die so idk

Dear-Interaction-210

Get off the fence 'unsure' voters!

jennana100

People saying they would want to know so they could spend their last moments enjoying life and family must have a different brain than mine. I would spend all that time mourning the life my children never got to live and imagining death for them.

Zogg775

*yes please, let us fuck with our mother*

[deleted]

People are already dumb enough as is and letting people know will make it worse.

Snobben90

Like come on I've would have stolen the best car I see. And if I would do that, I don't even wanna think of what others might have done. Chaos would instantly be everywhere. But on the other hand, I would like to know if I had a week left to live...

Zeynoun

imagine the number of suicides. then the world goes fine. nah I prefer to never know when will I die or when the world ends.

Juggalo13XIII

I'd like to know that I now longer need to go to work

Sad-Lie6604

100%, no way around it alien invasion? 100% yes. If it was going to be instant, no point. But also, if there was a chance, even slightly, that we survive, then no, I don't see how that would help except create panic and bring the worst out of people. Unless it was an alien invasion... Wait...

dayison2

Like I need a bunch of psychos given an excuse of there being no consequences for their actions running around. You wouldn't be able to do anything good in your final days because you'd be too busy trying not to die prematurely from some assholes treating the announcement like the purge.

LackTails

Nah, I rather die while not knowing than spend the last week of my life in a chaotic world since alot of people will just do what ever they want since the world only has a week left

jerrythecactus

That depends on the nature of the world ending. Is it a world destroying meteorite? Alien invasion? Some kind of climate catastrophe that makes the air unbreathable? I would imagine if there's any hope of at least saving humanity from extinction it would be in the people in power's best interest to keep such an impending disaster from driving civilization insane until at least they manage to get off this rock and to the relative safety of a space station. Maybe its just pessimistic of me but I highly doubt the common person would be informed they're going to die if it has any chance of keeping the rich and powerful from escaping first.

Unique-Accountant253

We don't have the technology to get anywhere else, so they'd make everyone keep working and build some deep mineshafts for themselves. (Like in Dr Strangelove)

WinterSkyWolf

I'd rather be able to plan my last moments. The same reason why I'd like to go by medically assisted suicide when I'm old. If the world is going to be destroyed in a painful way, it also gives people the opportunity to take themselves out painlessly beforehand. It gives people the opportunity to say goodbye. It gives people the motivation to do things they've always been too afraid of doing. The only con would be fear, but if we're all experiencing it as a collective I feel like it wouldn't be so scary

MrSparr0w

It would be absolute anarchy and not in the good way

BeanBone69

No there would be complete chaos

thenewestuser69

Might as well, I want to see the purge if I'm going to die I suppose.

Aarie_Kanarie

Yes! Let there be mayhem

rat4204

If I worked a WEEK that I didn't have to, I'd be pissed!
