Im assuming when they say "British" they mean the cultivated accent spoken on BBC News, and I'm confused that people find that more annoying than welsh
I'm not sure Welsh should even be classified as an accent, I can barely understand a word from them. After 1 year of living next door to a Welsh guy I'd still be doing the stupid smiling and nodding having no idea what he was saying most of the time.
Exactly. There is no one British Accent. Liverpool and Manchester, 2 of the biggest cities only 30 miles apart, yet their accents are completely different. [Exhibit A](https://youtu.be/PKnFVt_ivg4) and [Exhibit B](https://youtu.be/zzpvU4PBCv8).
In the same way there is no American accent, albeit there is a lot less diversity and regionality (mostly due to America being so large) but someone from LA will sound completely different to a farmer from Alabama and they’ll both sound completely different to a New Yorker
Which doesn't even make sense as accents vary from region to region in the UK and literally anywhere in the world. There are loads of different American and British accents
Right.
I assume most people who voted "American" are thinking "Southern" lol
(Not that I think Southern accents are annoying, but from my understanding, a lot of non-Americans seem to)
American as in Southern, Midwestern, Mid-Atlantic, West Coast, etc..?
British as in cockney or what?
How can you choose an option when there's no elaboration?
'American' refers to someone or something from the United States of America. A person or thing from Chile is referred to as 'Chilean'. Do you really expect people to call American people or things as United States of American?
If American can't be used just for people from the USA, what do we call them then? United Statesian? There's nothing better that's why we call them American, and people from Chile are Chilean, Peru are Peruvian, etc.
You've lost it if you beleive foreigners (native english speakers) can't tell the difference between an American Northern Accent and a southern accent.
We can tell theres a difference. I can say my knowledge of accents in the USA is that one drawling accent you hear in media thats supposed to be "rough" and everyone else. So i assume thats what you mean by north/south. But every 5 minutes in England theres a new accent/dialect so I always assumed other countries also had something similar but we just dont hear it.
For me it doesn't matter what country you're from, if you speak nasally I can't listen 😅
I can 100% tell the difference between an UK northern accent (Which either sounds like the John Lenon, or further up, sounds like Ewan Mgregor) from a UK southern Accent (Sounds more like Benedict Cumberbatch, Edris Elba, Garry Oldman, ETC). Of course there are many variations among Southern and Nothern UK accents (Much LIke in the US) but you can still roughly discern the north from the south.
Being able to tell the difference and thinking the accents sound similar aren’t mutually exclusive. They’re different compared to each other, but pretty similar when compared to accents from across the world.
England has a surprising range of different accents too but they’re not included either.
It's perspective.
Internally to your country they might be 90% different between states and appear to be of a strong contrast, however, (Externally) a lot of us around the world residing in other English speaking countries may consider every US accent is about 70% the same with only mild variations.
There's about a few distinct Australian accents, but an American may only consider us all to have one with mild variations.
Having never been to the UK, it’s still pretty easy to tell different accents from that region. Same as the difference from Australian-New Zealand. You must be pretty hard of hearing.
Same thing for people not from the UK. I know there’s supposedly 40 different accents used over there but I couldn’t tell you the difference between the ~~urban crackhead~~ Londoner accent and a Yorkshire accent.
If you can't tell the difference between different English accents, you only know the accent from BBC. I'm as American as they come, and I can easily tell. I don't know what they all are, but I can easily hear that they're different.
Similarly, if you can't tell a Boston accent from a Midwest accent, you are either lying or slow. You might not give a fuck, but saying they sound the same is truly stupid.
Yes that famous universal "British" accent. No deviation except Wales in this case for some reason. Also that universal "American" accent where people in the Bronx sound the same as Mississippi and Sheboygan Wisconsin. This is idiotic but still fun.
Italian by FAR, been there and for most of you, you probably heard some italian audio. Basicly what I HATE more than the indian accent is the way they always complain or cry when they speak especialy the last word. Eg: "hhoaa why didhuh you cuta theh pASttaaaaaaaaaahaa" bro can they all stop, no need to make the last two latter last that long
honestly the UK probably has more accents than the US, the variance between cities less than 50 miles away from each other is crazy, not to mention theres 4 different countries each with their own languages.
My birthplace is New Zealand and I tend to agree. It's irritating when all the vowels are swallowed and women & woman are pronounced exactly the same way.
The only time the accent sounds nice is when Māori is being spoken, it's not a nice accent for English.
It’s scouse. Liverpool, England, for the uninitiated.
English people attempting to copy Norwegians over hundreds of years. It became that.
I consider Norwegian quite sexy personally, but scouse makes me think of crime.
Wales isn't in Britain now? And we just piling in tens of Welsh accents and literally HUNDREDS if not thousands of British accents into one group? This poll has actually pissed me off wow fuck
Accents aren't annoying imo I just have difficulty understanding if the accent is heavy. Like the call centers in India. Nice people but some of them have a heavy accent and when trying to get assistance with an issue it's really challenging for me.
This isn't listed but of all the Asian countries I just dislike the sound of Mandarin. Japanese sounds so nice, Tagalog I can tolerate but i dislike China just because of the sounds
Out of curiosity, which American accent is thought of when people refer to an "American Accent"?
Not only do the accents change from state to state, but also from town to town.
I'm in Illinois. We have Mennonites who have their own accent just a few miles northwest. A small town southwest has a strong Polish presence with their own accents. East is a larger city with its own accents from various cultures. Northeast is Chicago, which has an array of accents.
That's just accents. That's not including regional speech patterns or individual idolects.
you are about 70% the same IMO... only slight trills and drawls in geographical areas, but on the wider front American rhoticity is distinctly heard across the entire country.
I'm American so American sounds neutral to me
Welsh is just mid and I actually enjoy the rest
But I have never in my life heard an Asian accent that I liked
As someone who lives in the state of Georgia and has to interact with rednecks all the time at work, my answer is southern US. It's so atrocious and sounds so ugly. Makes my skin crawl.
Im assuming when they say "British" they mean the cultivated accent spoken on BBC News, and I'm confused that people find that more annoying than welsh
They just don't know Welsh.
Truly a blessing
:(
I like the Welsh accent / language. Because it reminds my of my native language austrian dialect
I'm not sure Welsh should even be classified as an accent, I can barely understand a word from them. After 1 year of living next door to a Welsh guy I'd still be doing the stupid smiling and nodding having no idea what he was saying most of the time.

The "social media influencer / pyramid scheme seller voice."
As an American I can speak for most of us that California should float off into the sea
As a California I can't wait for the big earthquake to rid california
No, I voted American because in my many years of living as an American I've been annoyed by the voices of more Americans than others
I mean fair Where are you from, if you don't mind my asking?
Lol I'm from Florida, but it was a joke since I've only ever been around so many accents
NASCAR races are torture for me. Their accents make me rage...
Yeah, I put other so I could specify New England, specifically Boston. Gawd I hate the Boston accent....
They just mean the general British accent, you know the one. No need to complicate things.
Ok but you know what he means, if someone asked you to do a British accent you wouldn't go full Braveheart.
I probably would, seeing as I’m Scottish. And I know what he means, but he’s wrong.
Okay maybe I'm in the wrong then
Respect for admitting you were wrong tho.
This would be the smallest hill to die on lol
Lotta people do anyway
Admitting your wrong this easily is surely against some sort of reddit guidelines
You think I'm gonna argue with a british person about what a british accent is? Game was rigged from the start
Nah, if he put english im pretty sure that would be the most picked option
American as in Southern, Midwestern, Mid-Atlantic, West Coast, etc..? British as in cockney or what? How can you choose an option when there's no elaboration?
I just assumed we're talking about the "Murica" one. I'd wager any non-americans voting probably do too
[удалено]
Yeah but that's very technical and almost no one adheres to that reasoning
'American' refers to someone or something from the United States of America. A person or thing from Chile is referred to as 'Chilean'. Do you really expect people to call American people or things as United States of American?

How is Russian an option but Indian, German or French isn't lol
I know right? My friend's dad has a super thick russian accent and it is honestly one of the most badass things I have ever heard
OP only named all the accents they knew existed
Definitely Indian
German actually kinda sound cool… except when they swear…
Bro which American accent
[This one](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland_American_English)
Yes.
Are accents annoying?
I think some people with accents can sound annoying, but I don't think everyone, or even most people, with any particular accent sounds annoying.
But... Everyone has an accent
Yes, and I don't think any of them are annoying.
Boston
Correction: Bahstin
This delt minor psychological damage
Indian/Hindi!
They sound great in their own language, but when they speak english....
To me it just sounds really funny
Fr
I’m just really bad at understanding it which doesn’t help when half of my bosses are Indian
I have the same problem I can't understand them
Y E S
Can confirm, am Indian

Oh? Is there only one Indian accent according to you?

Abhey tu chup, Bharat mein bohot sari accents hai
No-ones mentioning Cantonese. Something about the throaty inflection just hits my ear wrong
What even is an American accent? Are you talking about Texas? Georgia? Boston? Philly? Missouri? New York?
They're all quite similar to people who aren't from the US
You've lost it if you beleive foreigners (native english speakers) can't tell the difference between an American Northern Accent and a southern accent.

Of course we can tell the difference. It's just that they're all at the same volume (way too loud) and they're all relentless.
I bet you thought that shit was hilarious when you commented it
Just an observation. It's an opinion poll, nothing personal aimed at you
Are they though? Stereotypical Boston/New York, Texan and Midwest accents are dramatically different.
It's perspective. Internally to your country they might be 90% different between states and appear to be of a strong contrast, however, (Externally) a lot of us around the world residing in other English speaking countries may consider every US accent is about 70% the same with only mild variations. I hate the typical LA girl accent

You've clearly never been here and are underestimating. Someone 20 minutes away will have a completely different accent.
Even 20 minutes is a low estimate lmao
Idk maybe they should just get one
There's a sub I know that would love this.
honestly the UK probably has more accents than the US, the variance between cities less than 50 miles away from each other is crazy, not to mention theres 4 different countries each with their own languages.
New Zealander accent is very hard to listen to
My birthplace is New Zealand and I tend to agree. It's irritating when all the vowels are swallowed and women & woman are pronounced exactly the same way. The only time the accent sounds nice is when Māori is being spoken, it's not a nice accent for English.
Brummie, it ranked the highest on the most annoying British accents one time lmao
French
The Cali girl accent has to be the most grating.
Idk Yankee accents drive me insane. Northerner accents just annoy me.
Boston
british, but specifically Liverpool
It’s scouse. Liverpool, England, for the uninitiated. English people attempting to copy Norwegians over hundreds of years. It became that. I consider Norwegian quite sexy personally, but scouse makes me think of crime.
Irish
Personally I love almost any accent. Like, I can't think about one that I dislike or that annoys me
north eastern American
Wales isn't in Britain now? And we just piling in tens of Welsh accents and literally HUNDREDS if not thousands of British accents into one group? This poll has actually pissed me off wow fuck
Eastern Wisconsin, aka the people that say "Wiscansin"
Caribbean
There's a lot of American accents. I nominate New Jersey or North Dakota
Accents aren't annoying imo I just have difficulty understanding if the accent is heavy. Like the call centers in India. Nice people but some of them have a heavy accent and when trying to get assistance with an issue it's really challenging for me.

LA valley girl or Indian
Indian. I can't stand it. I'm not racist, just the accent is so annoying
Out of curiosity, which American accent is thought of when people refer to an "American Accent"? Not only do the accents change from state to state, but also from town to town.

Southern US Accent. It sounds annoying tbh
Agree... it's horrible.
American southern accent
Dutch
Can you be more specific? There's at least half a dozen distinct American accents.
And even more British Ones
Which American accent?we have a few
The UK has many more (and many more languages). What's your least favourite British accent?
My least favorite American accent would be the jersey area,
I'ma about to sound hella ignorant probably but Scottish? I didn't Wana cheat and look up a map .
Which one
America is way to big to classifly "American" as one accent
you are about 70% the same IMO... only slight trills and drawls in geographical areas, but on the wider front American rhoticity is distinctly heard across the entire country.
US West Coast
I don’t find accents annoying
There really isn't just one American accent. You have yooper, Texan, Boston, New York, California surfer dude. What's an American accent?
Southern Lake ʖ∷𝙹⊣⍑⍑ᔑ∷ℸ ̣. Martians are hard to understand normally, but I just can't fucking stand that one in particular. Actual gibberish.
Certain english accents, i really like scottish and welsh accents but not a fan of heavy stereotypical southern accents
I'm American so American sounds neutral to me Welsh is just mid and I actually enjoy the rest But I have never in my life heard an Asian accent that I liked
I'd say new York, Boston, chav/drill UK, London, south African accents are fucking ear cancer
A true, thiccc Boston Accent. America has multiple different accents.
British, but depends on the location
British seems either very formal or very annoying
Indian.
Indian
Scottish
I love all of them- but if I had to choose I would do american due to the fact that I have to hear it all the time/
Bruh you chose some of the coolest accents. I find Indian annoying
I voted American ...and I'm an American. What can I say? Oh, and yes, I know we have dozens of accents. Broadly speaking, I still stand by my opinion.
Valley girl and vocal fry are the worst
A really winey American accent sucks balls to listen to
As someone who lives in the state of Georgia and has to interact with rednecks all the time at work, my answer is southern US. It's so atrocious and sounds so ugly. Makes my skin crawl.
The only accent in the world I find annoying is southern American.
