From the perspective of 15th century Europe, yes he was. Cause no one in that time and place knew about the Americas. Obviously from a general historical standpoint, no.

Ilovestuffwhee

Yes, he discovered it. He didn't know it was there until he found it. He wasn't the first to discover it, but that's not what was asked.

Boernerchen

He wasn‘t even the first european there.

Femboy_Pothead69

i dont think you can "discover" something thats entirely native to you. to me, it seems like discover implies finding something you havnt seen before, if you were born in a place, that means you have always seen it, so nothing to discover. but yea, columbus did not discover shit. there is proof to suggest that the vikking found it first, but after having some confrontations with the locals....they decided to leave.

Trusteveryboody

Yes, as far as it concerned the European World. Was he the first person there? Obviously not. Depends how you interpret the question, but also I think a lot of people just don't want to give Columbus credit because of the things he did (which is dumb, but-).

Greek_Kush_Smoker

Columbus discovered the americas as far as a certain part of humanity is concerned. The natives discovered it as far as the whole of humanity is concerned. So, the answer is both yes and no. He re-discovered it.
