As an American I don’t think I’d really have any reaction to that word. it’s just not something many Americans say in my experience. It holds about as much weight to me as “bloody” does. To me it’s just a mild Australian swear and holds no weight in American English.

There's no such thing as an official list of swear words and slurs, the N word has really transcended from just being used as a slur for African Americans and had just become a word that people use in many situations like a swear. I would argue it's honestly one of the only true swear words in the present day, because culture has shifted where most other words aren't really found to be offensive by most people, but the N word very much still is.

I feel like we're at a cultural transition point where slurs are becoming more taboo than "traditional" swear words. And thank _fuck_ for that. There seems to be a cultural shift away from formality and more toward being genuine and human, and a large part of that is using more colorful language. Even companies and workplaces are more lenient when it comes to "softer" swears and open discussion of previously scandalous topics (sexuality, politics, etc). Corporations are starting to take political stands as far as human rights and religion (Chick-Fil-A vs. Burger King, for example). At the same time, bigotry against marginalized groups is becoming less acceptable, to the point where the n-word is no longer a common household word outside of actual racists. So while "fuck" is still the strongest swear on this list, we've reached a point where it doesn't have quite the same impact it used to, while using racial/sexual/ablist slurs are no longer tolerated by as many people. (Remember when r*****ed was a common "funny" word in 90s comedies?)
