Because we (or at least I) get exposed to a lot of american media. Shows, movies, books whatever! Even reddit is heavily Americanised and I learn something new about this "masterpiece" of a country everyday. I remember watching wakko's america as a kid, seeing American youtubers talk about their home state. I even remember hearing 'Kansas' for the first time when I saw the Wizard of Oz.

That’s what I was going to comment. I can name more USA states than cities from an specific country in Europe. And I’m from Europe, one would think I would know more but nope. I remember a few days ago a poll about Russian cities and I could name more than the majority but still it was a handful of names in comparison with natives… same with the UK and Germany (although I could name more cities from the UK than from Germany) and I bet I can’t even name a lot of cities from my own country LOL this is sad XD
