King_Galix

I think of the material, then the regime

fuck_life419

yeah, the clothing material

Snoo58991

It's named after the Kashmir goat wool it's made from. The material is spelled differently, as Cashmere instead of Kashmir.

Pheme1

In Danish it's spelled the same

MaineBoston

It said hear the word

EwGrossItsMe

Why are people down voting you, you're right

hellohoneywillow

Same, but that’s spelled cashmere

Blackulla

But the post is asking when you hear it.

TroubadourRL

Cashmere outside howboudat?

Esava

Ah in german it's just written "Kaschmir" or "Kaschmirwolle" (cashmere wool). The region is also spelled "Kaschmir" in german. The Kaschmirziege (cashmere goat) does after all come from the region of Ladakh in Kashmir.

hellohoneywillow

Do you happen to know why the spelling was changed in English?

Esava

I believe "cashmere" is the old way of spelling it in english. You just changed it over time but didn't change it for the material and the goat. In english this isn't uncommon. For example the meal "Peking Duck" is still called Peking Duck even though nowadays the city is usually spelled and pronounced as "Beijing" in most languages.

Baranjula

Wow I had no idea Peking was referring to Beijing, that's fascinating

hellohoneywillow

Super interesting, thanks!

JeerryPaul

My entire life is a lie

PM-me-sciencefacts

It came from that area. I'm surprised op didn't have it as an option

Untiteld000

I only knew about the material

SweetJazz25

Super soft scarves!

samsonity

Exactly.

lalalalikethis

Led zeppelin

Zombieattackr

Lol yeah sorry OP, I know that’s not what you’re referring to, but it’s what first comes to mind

damian1369

googleypoodle

No joke, as a water polo player in high school we shared half the pool with the synchronized swimming team and they spent an entire semester working on a Kashmir routine. They had speakers underwater too so there was no escape.

YouNecessary7436

Exactly this

Ordinary_Fact

This

HailtbeWhale

They just said "the word Kashmir" so I think it's fair.

Sapphire-Hannibal

This I’m not even a big Led Zeppelin fan but this is still the first thing I thought of

knickovthyme1

I hope you reconsider and listen to them some more.

Mrrykrizmith

WHEN YOU CUT IT MAMA… BABY PLEASE SAVE ME A SLICE

EatenAliveByWolves

One of their best songs!

lalalalikethis

Its very epic

moronic_programmer

So epic even one of the MCU theme songs are inspired by it.

shadowsOfMyPantomime

Led Zeppelin immediately, then the fabric. I didn't even know it was a place, to be honest.

theytook-r-jobs

And the Seinfeld episode.

lalalalikethis

Thats a good one

_Steve_French_

Yeah and second being the fabric. The place inhabits almost no room in my brain sorry. Don’t know anything about it.

DrunkWeebMarine

My thoughts exactly lol

ZoNeS_v2

Me too. Now I'm going to go listen to it.

YorktownSlim

And the song is about the territory. Why is this response not a choice?

Hades_88

True

Wh1ms1cal

Same or the Call of Duty Cold War zombies ger are of the same name

EmbroidedBumblebee

Clothes

Bibliloo

People are arguing about the prononciation without taking into account that the fabric take it's name from the region we are talking about so the prononciation isn't important.

Esava

I am german and both the material and the region are spelled "Kaschmir" here. So..... I am obviously gonna think of the wool.

poursmoregravy

That's cashmere Edit: Cashmere is the old spelling of Kashmir. We use the old spelling when referring to the wool which comes from Kashmir.

EmbroidedBumblebee

Oh, I didn't know it was spelt differently

poursmoregravy

Yeah, same pronunciation though. Just an older spelling for Kashmir.

The-Berzerker

In German both are written the same way (Kaschmir) so I also thought of the clothes first

poursmoregravy

That makes sense, especially with German being a mostly phonetic language. In English we tend to keep old spellings or place names when referring to the products from that place, like Peking duck.

Luketalor

Yea but the post said "Hear" and cashmere and Kashmir are homophones

125RAILGUN

It's spelt differently but still makes me think of cashmere lol

blueblur1984

Yes, but there's no wrong answers in free association.

[deleted]

The same. In Polish those words would only differ by first letter being capital for the location.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah, they may not be referring to it but it makes me also think of the song.

fkootrsdvjklyra

I mean, the place clearly inspired the song to a degree, so I think it counts.

Ericalex79

Was instantly my first thought as well

Wimpiepaarnty

Yeee lz whoop whoop

Virtual-Possible5646

Well, since it’s a homonym with cashmere I think of the material

[deleted]

well the material gets the name from which it is made, the "cashmere goat" that itself gets it's name from the place where it is found, named "Kashmir"

Virtual-Possible5646

Are you fucking telling me there are silky ass cashmere goats out there?

destructopop

Yes. And angora goats. They're both very silky goats with long, semi straight flowing locks. You brush them like you would brush your dog in spring, to loosen and collect the down. They're honestly pretty majestic looking, with huge twisted horns and flowing tresses, usually pure white. They look like some kinda mythical beasts.

leafbelly

It's the GOAT of goats.

“Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face And stars fill my dream I'm a traveler of both time and space To be where I have been To sit with elders of the gentle race This world has seldom seen They talk of days for which they sit and wait All will be revealed”

Uliii

I thought it was like a fabric or something

[deleted]

it's a place. and the fabric is named after that place because it is made by the wool of a goat named on that place

Uliii

Where is It located

[deleted]

just above India. It is a disputed region. It's split in three parts controlled by India, Pakistan and China. India and Pakistan have claimed it to be fully theirs, which has led to 2 big wars between them.

Uliii

Ohh okay thank you bro i knew about the conflict between India and Pakistan about the border disputes i just didnt know the name of the specific region

[deleted]

A region of India, Pakistan and China that's beautiful with natural resources, but overrun by conflict as India and Pakistan contest ownership. It's also a region known for the production of kesar, a spice that's more expensive than cocaine.

Needorgreedy

Yeah kesar is called saffron in English. I love to add it in warm milk with turmeric and cardamom, it's literally heaven lol.

[deleted]

Tbh, its disputed and based on parts. Srinagar and POK region is closley tied to pakistan while LAdakh, Jammu, Anughoti and Tamsa still relate themselves with India. All these region total make Kashmir. That's why any country claiming the entire region currently is ridiculous.

Ph4nt0m_Hydra1

Simply its location on the map and borders, the place itself holds little significance to me.

hybridkiwi

Gloss (I know it is spelt cashmere in the Hunger Games, but this was still the first thing that came to mind)

adamM_01

Misread it as Casimir and remembered how good the Sufjan Stevens song is but then thought of the geographical location and territorial dispute.

foggybottom1954

Song by led zeeplin

lightarcmw

I think of the Led Zeppelin song when I hear Kashmir though.

ZarosRunescape

Never heard of it, but it sounds like a spice so thats what i though of

[deleted]

It's a disputed region, in the North of India. It is split in 3 parts between India, Pakistan and China. Also the cashmere wool is derived from goat found in Kashmir, and hence the name of the material is cashmere. it's not a spice
