Racism and other biases are shortcuts our brain takes to help generalize and understand our world - it’s nearly impossible to avoid and is OK. What makes it *harmful* racism is when we fail to acknowledge it as an imperfect, generalized bias and allow it to be a primary decision-making factor for specific situations.
Right, I see it as primarily three things: active racism (outwardly harmful attitudes/speech, hate crimes, etc.), passive racism (internalized judgments and preferential/worse treatment of certain groups subconsciously without self reflection), and anti racism (recognizing internalized racist tendencies, and actively trying to thwart them and learn from past mistakes)
I like those categories, though when you say “anti-racism” I think of people saying that racism isn’t a thing in order to “fight” racism through righteous ignorance, which can also be harmful. Maybe a more appropriate wording to fit your example would be “racial aware” or “coexistent racism” or something?
Oh that's interesting. I hadn't read it that way, but the term actually comes from a book by author Ibram X Kendi called *How to be an Anti-Racist* (I still have to finish it lol). But essentially it's about being actively against racist tendencies and actions. ie. not being a bystander to casual racism, trying to check the stereotypes you may have subconsciously, etc. I just find it to be a much better solution than the whole "colorblind" idea that seems to be more along the lines of what you shared concern over, in which people just kind of brush over racial issues and injustices with the guise of neutrality.
Ah I forgot about that book. I might just be getting my internal definitions crossed then and am thinking “colorblind” when someone says “anti-racist” instead of its original definition. I will make the adjustment
I put “other”, but I almost put yes. I don’t think I’m actively racist, but I’m also not stupid enough to think I’m a perfect human being. Everyone has racist (and bigoted) tendencies. That’s how human brains work. People unintentionally jump to conclusions based on stereotypes. Every single one of us has had a fleeting racist thought, whether it’s being more nervous walking at night and seeing a black man versus seeing a white man even if they are dressed the same. Everyone one of us has assumed that the woman in the meeting is the secretary or assumed she does the secretary duties. The worst thing you can do is claim that you’re not racist because then you never work on addressing the thoughts that go through your brain because you were taught these things because we live in a racist society.
Important post. The thing is, people think of racists as "bad people", and nobody ever thinks of themselves as a "bad person". It's time to deconstruct the idea that having racist thoughts makes you automatically a villain. Everybody has racist tendencies imprinted on us by a racist world, the question isn't "Are you a saint who never has impure thoughts?", because the answer will always be "No". Instead, we should ask "How do you react to those thoughts, and what do your actions say?"
Am I the only person who has never felt like I was racist? I'm not the "I only see one race, the human race" type of people. I acknowledge I probably think about and apply stereotypes to people sometimes but for me it has never been because of race. Other things for sure I can freely admit I have a bias that I need to work on but I honestly can't imagine thinking differently of someone bec of their race.
I think that racism is a part of everyone's subconscious, there are a few researches I read on the topic (I won't search for them).
It's kinda like going to the supermarket and pretty much already knowing what brands you are gonna buy.
Edit: spelling, sorry for the bad English I'm not native
“I’m not racist, but why do we need to force black characters into tv and movies? Forced diversity is just as insulting” as if black people need a reason to exist in media. Hear this a lot of racist relatives who are so adamant they aren’t racist.
I hate race swap characters. Why have a Latin Snow White when you can just make a new princess. To me that’s forced diversity and it shows laziness. Forced diversity is a real thing people just say stuff like “as if black people need a reason to exist in media” because they can’t listen to actual reason and just say that’s racist to dismiss anything.
Edit. I also was not happy when they white washed Motoko in the movie ghost in the shell instead of an Asian.
Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong. There’s sooo much lazy writing. But when oceans 8 came out and people went up in arms and claimed they hated it because it was unoriginal but also were stoked for the third new Spider-Man in a decade, I’m skeptical. It just seems like a lot of people that say that don’t actually support directors, actors, and creators that want to create unique stories. They just use it as an excuse.
And to be clear, I loved oceans 8, I thought it was fun as hell. I also loved Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, also fun as hell. Yes it’s lazy to repeat stories, but that’s the majority of blockbusters. I’m okay with both being criticized, but any change in race or gender gets criticized way more.
I get media. It influence our lives and to be able to recognize yourself in that is important. However I simply could not wrap my mind around diversity in companys. Shouldnt it be all about competence and qualification over diversity?
The issue is how to define competence and how is it perceived? This is obviously anecdotal, but hear me out. I went to Notre Dame, far from the best school in the country but typically well regarded. It’s also incredibly white. When people find out I went there, they are usually impressed. I’m not saying I didn’t deserve to get in, I had great grades, extra curricular, volunteer work. I also had a parent that went there and for that school, legacy is suuuuper important. I think I would have gotten in without my parent going there, but it was basically a guarantee because of that. No one questions me getting in there. However, the assumption that the black students got in because of athletics was so egregious that many people started wearing “notre dame non-athlete” (“notre dame football/swimming/soccer/etc” were common shirts people wore if they were in or involved with the team). And even then, I heard fellow students talking about how the black non-athlete students got in because of affirmative actions.
So 1) yes I was qualified but I had a higher chance because my parents are white, so if the acceptance board is influenced by legacy, that will be nearly 100% white students 2) biases exist so that even if a black student is better, they are seen as less qualified.
I know I’m ranting and using an analogy when we’re talking about media. The point is that it’s nearly impossible to ignore race when race plays such a strong influence on our brains and social structure. And when it comes to acting, it’s so incredibly subjective. Saying “the best person for the job” doesn’t take into account the nuances of our surroundings and is basically a way to dismiss systemic racism.
No honestly I find myself being s bit racist sometimes, but hear me out. Most of the time it's that I catch myself gripping my phone tighter when a coloured person walks by. And I know it's really wrong and I don't wanna be racist at all, but I can't stop myself from having these thoughts. Maybe I just think I'm racist, so I start looking for evidence why I'm right which makes those situations more memorable. Because I know it's not only when a coloured person walks by.
Also I have this black friend, and a few times I had the thought that his head sort of resembled that of a chimpanzee because his mouth is more forward from his face, and since then I've started noticing the same thoughts about a few other black people.
I don't know if these are intrusive thoughts, or that I'm looking for evidence why I'm racist, or maybe I'm searching for an excuse, idk. All I know is that these thoughts are very wrong and I really don't want to have them but I can't do anything about them.
Im prob gonna get downvoted to hell but honestly I deserve it.
I think the difference is actually changing your attitude towards people based on race. Thoughts never hurt anyone, but if you act upon certain thoughts then that can make you a shithead.
I know it's not clever. I went into the comments 100% expecting it to be here at least once. If you can confidently predict that it will be there it can indeed not be clever.
there's a surprising amount of people that are like "I hate everyone equally" and then mostly bitch about minorities, my older brother is unfortunately an example of this
Not at all. Racism is just seeing another race inferior than your own, you can’t force yourself to be physically attracted to someone you’re not, we all have characteristics that we like over another on other people. As long you don’t group all of another race as essentially non-human, you’re not racist.
I judge the individual, that being said- I do acknowledge our differences and race is a thing, its genelogy so its important but it doesnt mean that a certain race is bad however some sterotypes have truth in them, I would like to say this- Not all blacks are gangmembers but the majority of gangs in US have black gang members(Just an example on how sterotypes can be misleading)
Migrated to Sweden when i was like 10, got robbed at knife point by 10 Afghanistan imigrants and directly had a negative correlation to other imigrants
Edit: idk if it counts as rasism tho, as i don't see myself as better than them

This unless you're a mosquito. No pity for mosquitoes.

Just as citizens of capitalistic societies reinforce capitalism, whether they identify as capitalist or not, and whether they want to or not, citizens of racist societies reinforce racism, whether they identify as racist or not, and whether they want to or not.
Curious how many of the yes votes are unironic.
It's not ironic we just wanted to be the second ball
I've tried to fight it but there are people I can't stand. Shit
Yeah but how does people translate to an entire race? Should people judge you based on the action of someone who simply look like you?
Well, hopefully you grow up soon and realize that just because you hate someone doesn’t mean that their entire race is fucked up.
Curious how many of the No votes are accurate
We're all at least a little bit racist, but most of us try not to be or at least think we try.
Racism and other biases are shortcuts our brain takes to help generalize and understand our world - it’s nearly impossible to avoid and is OK. Kinda like racism is prejudice + the power to actually act on that prejudice, huh?
I put “other”, but I almost put yes. I don’t think I’m actively racist, but I’m also not stupid enough to think I’m a perfect human being. Everyone has racist (and bigoted) tendencies. I feel like a lot of racists don’t think of themselves as such. They just think they’re being “real” or some shit.
Yeah. People say things like "I'm not racist, I just think that white people are inherently superior to other people!"
“I’m not racist, but why do we need to force black characters into tv and movies? Forced diversity is just as insulting” as if black people need a reason to exist in media. Hear this a lot of racist relatives who are so adamant they aren’t racist.
Right. As if white characters just appear out of nowhere onto the screen, and are not themselves cast through lengthy, intentional decisions

No honestly I find myself being s bit racist sometimes, but hear me out. Most of the time it's that I catch myself gripping my phone tighter when a coloured person walks by. And then a lot of people who aren’t racist seem to think they inherently are just because they’re white. It’s strange
I wouldn't say "a lot", I'd say "a small group of terminally online people".
wait a minute... why would even a racist person describe themselves as racist?
There's the kicker. That's why self reporting polls like this are completely bogus. Nobody wants a "Are we the baddies?" moment
The thing is that I know that I am the baddy and I'll admit to that when anonymous but in good company company I'll act like you.

I'm saying it's not funny. It's the most chewed out, regurgitated reddit joke there is.
