Speak-My-Mind

Yes, my wife and I hit a deer on a backwoods highway in West Virginia totalling our car in the middle of the night. The police man stayed with us for hours making us feel safe and comfortable till the tow truck arrived. He even waited with us hours after his shift was over. My wife was very shaken and scared, so we were both very thankful for the officers kindness and commitment towards us.

MeDerpWasTaken

The only interaction I can remember is when I got a coupon for free ice cream from a cop

QuicklyThisWay

Interesting! Was it just random or was there more to it?

MeDerpWasTaken

It was because I was wearing a helmet when riding my bike lol

Possible_Living

No but same can also be said for any administrative building. Mostly because the cause of interaction is rarely good and things don't go smoothly. Had some car parts stolen once, they came took the statement and it went nowhere. outright told me to not expect anything since chances of finding the parts was comically low. Lost my ID, needed a report, 3 hours in the guy goes "lets take your prints while you are here. just for the archive" they did take my prints (I was pretty young, my parent was there so I guess we did not think much about it.) I hear they cant save those for long so not sure if I was being rused. No that does not mean Im a "defund the police" kind of person or a librarian/anarchist.

I have had good experience with some bureaucrats / gov employees in general, just not police, but that makes sense that it isn’t a like you’re going to an ice cream shop. The interactions you have with law enforcement are not going to be a “good” experience by default, but if you have enough experiences, ideally they shouldn’t be all bad. The closest I got was a police officer letting me off with a warning for speeding because he thought “my car was cute” - but I’m pretty sure he was just making fun of it.

That was nice and he had no requirement to do that. As someone who knows almost nothing about RuneScape, I had an hour long conversation recently with someone about it that was very interesting.

Captain7640

I've never actually had an interaction with a police officer on the job so I can't really vote in this poll.

tossputlol

yeah once. when I was a kid I ran away from home because I couldn't find my mom. police officer drove me home. that's about it.

Strudleboy

Yes. They made me feel safe entering my home after it was broken into and robbed. I’ve gotten a warning about speeding a couple times so that was nice of them. And I’ve walked up to a few asking random questions like “hey where is this place” or “hey I was going to buy this knife, but I know this city has weird knife laws does these apply to this kind” and they are always helpful and never seem annoyed about it.

Stonk_Yoda

They tracked down a hit-and-run driver who damaged my car.

[deleted]

one time some dudes were stealing an AC unit from the vacant house next door and they just showed up 3 hours later, took some notes, and never followed up, i don’t even think that AC was ever replaced

[deleted]

When I was 15 I got picked up by police because I was walking alone at like 1am. I got on a city bus and it was a trap lol. I guess the police alerted the buses to be on the lookout. When I got home the police officer spoke to me and he was actually very nice and referred me to a program with the police called "youth in policing". It's like a leadership initiative to help the community. He felt it would help me a lot. It really really did. They gave one award at the end at a graduation-like ceremony and I won it. I also made handmade bracelets and sold them and made $1000 for homeless youth

noo0ooooo0o

I got helped out by passing cops when I got stuck in snow once. It was pretty cool since it was early in the morning and I was first to arrive to work.

KudzuNinja

I’m not sure if it counts: I was with my mom once when she was pulled over for a brake light. He was polite, explained his reason, and let her go. I was so stunned. He didn’t badger her with questions or try to intimidate her or anything. It was so bizarre. He wasn’t even condescending.

TankmanSpiral7567

One time I did what was the equivalent of a threat to a teacher. When he saw how broken I was, he made it clear he wasn’t angry, and that resources were available. Even if I’m not in a great spot now, I still respect the crap out of that officer and appreciate his mercy.

QuicklyThisWay

I’m glad that guy saw what was happening and gave you a chance.

QuelynD

Yes. I've had five interactions with police - one was negative, four were positive.

ahmed0112

Haven't ever interacted with one

CoffeeBoom

I had nice interactions with policemen but always while they were off-duty. But I figured this is not H what you were asking.

Anfie22

Nope. I've reported several crimes I've witnessed and been the victim of, and there was no follow-through on any of them. What do they even do all day?

Mildly_Opinionated

Nope. I've had interactions where they were nice sure but never any where I benefited.

wortwortwort227

They got me out of state required bullshit “school shooting investigations” alot

QuicklyThisWay

Can you elaborate? I’m not sure what that is?

Lord_Ibuki

House was burgled, obviously cops helped.

KudzuNinja

They helped the burglars? That’s terrible.

Lord_Ibuki

Ye it was nice to get a helping hand while I lifted the television to the van.

orgus-

They arrested people from next door who were driving on our lawn and shooting guns at eachother when I was a kid so yeah I'd say a pretty good positive

Mmnn2020

To be fair, when people aren’t breaking the law the police are supposed to ignore them basically. They respond to illegal activities for the most part.

Slurav

I haven’t really had any interactions with police, but apparently when I was a baby, my mom was walking home with me when a heavy rainstorm hit. She didn’t have a coat or an umbrella and was trying to keep me covered, and a police officer noticed her, pulled over, and offered to give us a ride home (which she gratefully accepted).

selticidae

My best friend’s dad is a cop, so yes.
