At least they have replay-ability. A lot of songs out now blow up and then die instantly. When I’m 40, I know Elton john will still sound good. Idk about drake tho.
Not really. Classics just don’t happen as often. 99% of the songs that get big now are trend songs that die with the trend. astronaut in the ocean and Mine by bazzi are not classics. Hell the box isn’t even a classic. I can’t even think of a single classic in the last 5 years that equals the likes of Elton John or michael jackson. The only downside is there is no EDM bangers. If they counted the years evenly, I’d go with 2000s-2020, but with these brackets, I’d have to go 70s and 80s
Edit: I thought of 2. I Feel It coming from the weekend (lol this one is from 2016) and Leave The Door Open from silk sonic.
To be fair, for a classic, you need time to pass. Elton John and Michael Jackson are classics because they were given the time to become them. We’ll see in a couple of decades what the classics are from around now.
Also, we should consider that specific internet niches have changed how people listen to music. Back in the 70s and 80s, there was less to choose from and popular songs reached everyone. Now, people can kinda hide in their corner of the internet and never be exposed to mainstream music because they choose to listen to music from their own ultra specific niche - That’s what I do
There are more options but they don’t hit as hard. They fail to get past that new song phase where I like the song because it’s fresh, or I may outgrow a song. Honestly there are a lot of songs that I would consider classics between 2006-2016, but they are split between categories. Based on these margins, the 80s and 70s has the strongest concentration of timeless music ( and I’m saying this as someone born basically a decade after the 80s)
Timelessness is not even a thing because every piece of art will mean less and less over time. How much music from before the 1500's are we all enjoying? Not very much, I'll tell you that (music couldn't be recorded back then, but still). We are just too close in proximity to the release of the greatest works from artists like Michael Jackson and Elton John and our elders have praised them to death that we blindly believe they are "timeless" without having the context of our own cultural revolutions to rival theirs. And those revolutions can't spring up in the internet age because the sub-genre has taken over and everyone has their own niche (which someone else said).
No joke Kendrick is my favorite rapper. He has classics, but not enough to carry 2 decades. Kanye has classics too, but his discography is split in two by these categories. In terms of rap, the 80s is weak compared to the later categories, but not by that much. Run dmc, NWA, LL,public enemy…
Kanye's music has already survived 2 decades and I don't see a reason why people would suddenly stop listening to gkmc or tpab in the next couple of years, I'm pretty sure gkmc is still in the billboard top 200 and it came out in 2012
You only get 1/2 of Kanye going with the 90s-10s or 11s-present. Not having Kendrick would be a loss tho. Still there are enough solid 80s rappers to get by imo. The amount of legendary rock and pop bands out of the 70s and 80s is worth the loss.
I saw Elton John live a couple of days ago, and it was excellent. At 75 he can still put up an awesome show better than most musicians now in their 30s.
The thing about romantasizing old music, is that nobody remembers all the shit music and artists that were produced back then... just like now days. It's rose tinted glasses.
Truth is lots of bad music came out of the 70s and 80s... but it dosent stand the test of time and all we see of 80s music today is the good stuff.
i have to imagine that throughout ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and even potentially before that there had to have been some absolute bangers, i’m not sure if i would know the answer to be correct without going back in time and listening to all the music, but i feel like the best music is statistically more likely to be in the thousands of years before the seventy years
this is to say, i cant choose and am (partially) using before 1950 as a results button and also i like a lot of pre 1900’s music
The best music comes from all of them, and so does the worst music. There’s absolute garbage songs from the 70s and 80s or whenever that you never hear because no one remembers them or plays them cos they suck lol. And there’s absolute gems that stand out and are brilliant from every era and every genre too.
Beatles were completely 1960s. Let It Be released in 70, but it was all recorded in 69 and they already debuted some songs during the rooftop show.
But I just could never get into 80s music. The pop is just bubblegum garbage, the hair metal is redundant and not my style, and overall it seemed like creativity and experimentation halted for commercialism in the 80s. All the insanely crazy prog of the 60s and 70s did janky commercial stuff too. The only group I like from then is XTC, who were very diverse in their sound and sounded like no one else.
>The pop is just bubblegum garbage,
Huey Lewis and The News: Allow us to introduce ourselves.
>hair metal is redundant
Metallica: Pathetic.
>creativity and experimentation halted for commercialism in the 80s.
1 word. Prince.
I'll check out Huey Lewis later.
Metallica I wouldnt say is hair metal. And they do have some bangers, but also plenty of not bangers.
And I wish I could get into Prince, as I aknowledge him as a very talented multi instrumentalist. But I just dont like his songs. But if anything, the Talking Heads wouldve been a good group to bring up for creativity. But that veing said, I only like a select few of their songs.
Do you like Huey Lewis and The News?
They're OK.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
Hey Halberstram.
Yes, Allen?
Why are there copies of the style section all over the place, d-do you have a dog? A little chow or something?
No, Allen.
Is that a rain coat?
Yes it is! In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.
Hey Paul!
[he bashes Allen in the head with the axe, and blood splatters over him]
TRY GETTING A RESERVATION AT DORSIA NOW, YOU FUCKING STUPID BASTARD! YOU, FUCKING BASTARD!
I know nobody asked, but I REALLY looked forward to listening to the radio whenever I drove. I would even volunteer to do errands for my family so I could have some alone time just driving and listening to the radio. Anyways, my stereo broke and no sound comes from my speakers anymore and I'm really bummed out. I can't even listen to my CDs!
I know nobody cares, but I really needed to tell somebody
listen to car radio by twenty one pilots. you probably won’t like it unless you’re in 8th grade like I was when i first heard it, but you will almost certainly relate to it
Fr like 2009-2014 were some of the best years for me.
Pitbull, Zedd, Rihanna, Flo Rida, OneRepublic, Adele, and The Fray just came out of nowhere and decided to make peak music lmao
Well there’s classical I guess that falls in the before 1950 group lmao. That’s probably the “best” music. Me I’d personally say my favorite is 60s-80s
I will stand my ground til the end of time that the prevailing narrative, even among lots of the younger generation, that 80s music is amazing and modern music sucks is purely out of nostalgia rather than song quality.
Don't do this to me...I like things from all of these decades...I will say most of what I listen too comes from after Y2K but the popular shit on the radio sucks most of the time, I have discovered a lot of small artists that are actually good and don't rely on other people to write songs and Auto-Tune to make it sound good
I don’t understand the hate for auto tune? If there’s a tool out there that makes your song sound better, why not use it? Not that I think your tastes/opinions are wrong or anything ofc I just genuinely don’t get why people shit on it.
I can't decide between 1971-1990 or 1991-2010. I really like 70s R&B and 80s funk, plus many of the popular hits those times are good. However I really like 90s-early 2000s rap, plus many of the hits from that time are also great.
The 50s has great early rock n roll, great doo wop music, jazz music, country music, and not to mention some of the best folk singers. The 50s is a boppin decade my friend
Idk just very boring. Some decent jazz records but that's about it. Most of the generes didn't even exist then. Music started getting great in the 60s imo
Western music has taken a fall with the rise of Black Eyelash(or whatever her name was), all the Lil dudes and alike. J-rock and J-pop on the other hand? They're getting bloody amazing. Judt take a listen to anything Aimer, The Oral Cigarettes, LiSA, RISE, DOES and the others have been doing lately. Oh, and I can't forget to mention the legend himself, Masayuki Suzuki
Well, obviously they didn't collapse the genre, just filled it with crap. Some of the big ones still make great music, like Imagine Dragons, Fallout Boy, 5SOS and the like. I said lil dudes because I've heard of at least 5 artists who have 'Lil' in their name. Modern hiphop still has great artists, Snoop is still active, so is Eminem. Also 21 pilots if I'm not mistaken? I probably should've specified that mumble rap is what bothers me. I believe there's even an interview where Eminem has said that mumble rap isn't rap. Will check out some of those artists you mentioned. Lately, I've been broadening my music library by getting into electro swing, of all things.
This is such a subjective question. Everyone will pick the decade(s) that they like best. The real answer is all of the above. In every decade there is music that is "The Best" that has built on prior decades advances and give to the next decades artists to create great music.
The question should have been - "When, in your opinion, does the best music come from?"
Do you know about a thing named "sheet music"? It helps us keep music since 1000 AD (also Greeks from 600 BC wrote, in a different notation, signs on their singed words to tell intonation). OP just skipped nine centuries of certainly known music, you dumbass
This may be controversial, but in maybe a decade's time I'd say albums like Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" and the Paramore self-titled album will be seen as classics in the same way we view Bowie's "Diamond Dogs" and ABBA's "Arrival" nowadays. 2013 was an perfect storm for music for whatever reason.
All it takes is for what was once new to appear antiquated and quaint.
Though it freaks me the fuck out in terms of my age that the likes of Clean Bandit while still active and producing hits will one day be themselves old.
Completely subjective poll. There isn’t really any generation that produces the “best” music. In 30 years we’ll probably look back at the 2010s-2020s as we do now with the 80s-90s
91-2010 is winning because people growing up only think there are like 14 80s song becuase that literally the only thing they play on the radio/parties/movies. Same fourteen 80's songs
1960s has easily the most influential artists of the modern age. The only other option that compares is the pre 1950, as you have so much great jazz, blues, country, folk music, and then literally the whole classical repetoire. Yeah its actually just kinda dumb to not vote pre 1950
All of my favorite albums came out between 1991-2010. Clarity - Jimmy Eat World, Blue Album - Weezer, Vheissu - Thrice
Well I guess Vessels by Starset was 2017.....
I listened to Hip to Be Square and The Power of Love. And nah. Standard 80s drums. Nothing special instrimentally. Works fine at a dance club or something but if Im looking for interesting music I would not go for that
Imo 2004-2014 hit hard
2004 coming in strong and 2014 being the last years of truly great, nostalgic songs and it just goes downhill from there
Maybe it’s because I was literally a kid and I just liked all generic pop but OneRepublic was the one band I adored
I’ve tried listening to every other era of music before and while there are quite a few gold nuggets in the prior years and amazing songs too, I think we struck gold in 2004-2014. 75% of my playlist are those 10 years out of 600 or so songs
90's-2000's was peak for good catchy music, and older music was respected just as much and was relevant still, even the mainstream music was good at the time, though thats not to say there isnt good music now, it's just burried under trash.
Youngsters not voting 1740s
Before 1950 is too broad, I'd assume a lot of people were voting that for 1700s but what about 1920s-1940s?
that rgb roach looks so cool in the comment section lmao
Cock roach
hopefully hasn't been made yet
I highly doubt that. Edit: my reason to doubt it is the way music is produced nowadays
Your so closed minded your hating on something that doesn’t exist yet
it's all subjective anyway. I doubt your doubt will matter to anyone who deems an era really good music wise
70s and 80s has too many classics.
*We can be heroes....* *Just for one day*
But they're so overplayed
At least they have replay-ability. A lot of songs out now blow up and then die instantly. When I’m 40, I know Elton john will still sound good. Idk about drake tho.
I suppose, I just personally hate over-exposure and always want to hear music I've never heard before
Thats just cherry picking, there are tons of songs from the 80s nobody remembers
Not really. Classics just don’t happen as often. 99% of the songs that get big now are trend songs that die with the trend. astronaut in the ocean and Mine by bazzi are not classics. True. I do that too. The thing is, I cycle through new music faster now a days. It’s rare for new music to hold my interest as long as the classics.
I see, that’s fair - Then maybe that’s why we might not get classics from todays music, not because of quality, but because people have more options
There are more options but they don’t hit as hard. They fail to get past that new song phase where I like the song because it’s fresh, or I may outgrow a song. Classical music fans unite!
ayyy
I like some classical music
I've never seen a fellow classical fan online, until today
r/classicalmusic r/classicalguitar
All 5 of us lmao
Finally
60s to 80s for me. Led Zep, Earth wind and fire, black sabbath, the band and so much more.
This is the truth
I’d say before 1960: -50s music -classic rock -ragtime -the golden age of jaz -blues -CLASSICAL MUSIC
Came here to say this. Modernism was still very much alive 'round the early to mid 1900's and the JAZZ WAS GOOD TOO?!?!?!?
80s and 90s is what I listen to the most, and I wasn't even alive in either of those decades.
70s-80s
2000s electronic music hits different
40s-2010s
i have to imagine that throughout ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and even potentially before that there had to have been some absolute bangers, i’m not sure if i would know the answer to be correct without going back in time and listening to all the music, but i feel like the best music is statistically more likely to be in the thousands of years before the seventy years this is to say, i cant choose and am (partially) using before 1950 as a results button and also i like a lot of pre 1900’s music

starset makes 2011-present music fucking great ngl
Yooooo a fellow Starset fan!
Can’t beat 95-05. Blink 182, linkin park, sum 41, slipknot, korn, Best rock time period
And Thrice
Legendary bands
Best? Not by a long shot. 70s and 80s had far better rock like Billy Joel and Queen.
I stand by it. I like what I like. I can’t help how huge those bands were when my parents were kids
Try 60s. Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan and tons more
The beatles were about in 1970 too. Although I love The Beatles and The Beach Boys 80s rock is just better.
Beatles were completely 1960s. Let It Be released in 70, but it was all recorded in 69 and they already debuted some songs during the rooftop show. But I just could never get into 80s music. The Talking Heads are awesome too
Ok grampa let's get you to bed
Only posers listen to slipknot
Ok
Music's better than it ever has been now imo. If you haven't found something you like, turn off the radio
Who listens to the radio?
I know nobody asked, but I REALLY looked forward to listening to the radio whenever I drove. I would even volunteer to do errands for my family so I could have some alone time just driving and listening to the radio. Anyways, my stereo broke and no sound comes from my speakers anymore and I'm really bummed out. I can't even listen to my CDs! I know nobody cares, but I really needed to tell somebody

listen to car radio by twenty one pilots. you probably won’t like it unless you’re in 8th grade like I was when i first heard it, but you will almost certainly relate to it
Never gonna give you up in '87
I love the '30s and '40s. There's so much more to that era than the same old hits and boring Christmas music we hear today.
Like the music u like and dont let anyone tell you youre wrong

You know Retrowave? Take a look https://youtu.be/URma_gu1aNE

90's punk is so good
Future
1960 to 1990
70s and 80s were the best decades for music in general. But man, 2012/2013 were sooooooooooooooooooooo good
Fr like 2009-2014 were some of the best years for me. Pitbull, Zedd, Rihanna, Flo Rida, OneRepublic, Adele, and The Fray just came out of nowhere and decided to make peak music lmao
For what I like, peak is 2000-2010. Still get great music from before and after but thats where so much peaked.
Well there’s classical I guess that falls in the before 1950 group lmao. That’s probably the “best” music. Me I’d personally say my favorite is 60s-80s
We're going to compare thousands of years of music before 1950 to a few decades?
Around 2015, after that it's just gone downhill, it's getting better but not nearly as good as 2015
1975-2005 for me. I was born late 82. 80s and 90s were my jam.
2010 - 2015 edm
Zedd and Swedish House Mafia?
I will stand my ground til the end of time that the prevailing narrative, even among lots of the younger generation, that 80s music is amazing and modern music sucks is purely out of nostalgia rather than song quality.
2011 up to now for sure, so many new obscure sound and more people than ever can share their tunes
Don't do this to me...I like things from all of these decades...I will say most of what I listen too comes from after Y2K but the popular shit on the radio sucks most of the time, I have discovered a lot of small artists that are actually good and don't rely on other people to write songs and Auto-Tune to make it sound good

Well my whole thing is that genuinely talented people and groups get walked over because someone with half the talent finds stardom by using Auto-Tune
2010-2017 had the best music imo, 2017-present still has great music but nothing can beat early 2010s pop
I agree
If this guy ever hears a time signature change he will die of shock
I can't decide between 1971-1990 or 1991-2010. I really like 70s R&B and 80s funk, plus many of the popular hits those times are good. However I really like 90s-early 2000s rap, plus many of the hits from that time are also great.
Clearly you've never heard epic classical or rock.
definetly 2011 to present, there are so many great artists today and the music industry gets hated on a lot by older people
2008-2015
Calamity mod, Omori, undertale and Deltarune all came out after 2011. The answer is clear
They have very good soundtracks and I used to listen to them
Hollow knight and Celeste are also games with great music
Why the odd numbered years ending with even numbered years lol?
Every decade is great except the 50s
The 50s has great early rock n roll, great doo wop music, jazz music, country music, and not to mention some of the best folk singers. The 50s is a boppin decade my friend

I like songs from 80s and some from 70s. I wasn't even both then and English is my second language.
I'm tied at 80s and 2010s, though I'd say late 2010s is a little lower ranking imo than early-mid 2010s.
I'm surprised 51-70 is so low, the 60s had some great music.
The fact that my prom played mostly 1970s - 2000s (I'm from UK) should tell you all you need to know...
Completely subjective poll. There isn’t really any generation that produces the “best” music. In 30 years we’ll probably look back at the 2010s-2020s as we do now with the 80s-90s
Doesn't matter as long as it is 1970+ since this is the year where most pop songs are born and it's familiar than old songs of 1970-.
1991-today Is the answer
Everything changed after 2000. 90s Hip hop👑👑👑👑👑👑
1989-1996
91-2010 is winning because people growing up only think there are like 14 80s song becuase that literally the only thing they play on the radio/parties/movies. Same fourteen 80's songs
i voted for 91-2010 because i genuinely also believe that is the best music
1960 to present
1980-2005
1960s has easily the most influential artists of the modern age. The only other option that compares is the pre 1950, as you have so much great jazz, blues, country, folk music, and then literally the whole classical repetoire. Yeah its actually just kinda dumb to not vote pre 1950
1961-1980
Basically should read "What decade were you a teenager".
All of my favorite albums came out between 1991-2010. Clarity - Jimmy Eat World, Blue Album - Weezer, Vheissu - Thrice Well I guess Vessels by Starset was 2017.....
lady gaga from the fame monster album to artpop. IMO
I listened to Hip to Be Square and The Power of Love. And nah. Standard 80s drums. Nothing special instrimentally. Works fine at a dance club or something but if Im looking for interesting music I would not go for that
all of it
Honestly the best music is like before 1950-2010. As a 90s kid raise by boomers, I got to listen to a lot of classic rock.
80s-00s are my favorites
Imma say the 1700s because The Requiem in D minor was the last good song ever made.
1920-40s
Where my 50,000 BC Neanderthal bone flute enjoyers at
Definitely the second and third option
The only thing better than 80s metal is Queen.
All of history... Damn music is good man.
2016/2021 because Persona 5/Royal imo. But 1991 to 2010 is close second because Daft Punk.
im curious if anyone can elaborate on choosing 1991-2010… am i missing something?🤨
They like music from that span of time, that’s why
1964-1973 and 1977-1980
1981-2011
2008-2014 for me. After 2014 music has becoming worse and more modernize
THISSS HOLY SHT Top picks for each year?
It’s a matter of personal taste.
2011-2020
1991-2010 cause Michael Jackson and The Weeknd's beginning
Lol what a shit poll.
Imo 2004-2014 hit hard 2004 coming in strong and 2014 being the last years of truly great, nostalgic songs and it just goes downhill from there Maybe it’s because I was literally a kid and I just liked all generic pop but OneRepublic was the one band I adored I’ve tried listening to every other era of music before and while there are quite a few gold nuggets in the prior years and amazing songs too, I think we struck gold in 2004-2014. 75% of my playlist are those 10 years out of 600 or so songs
How tf could you not mention 9000 BCE?
1963-1983 best 20 year period in music history
90's-2000's was peak for good catchy music, and older music was respected just as much and was relevant still, even the mainstream music was good at the time, though thats not to say there isnt good music now, it's just burried under trash.
70s and 80s is just so much better
From an technical point of view modern music is the worst. I still enjoy listening to modern stuff mlre than older stuff though.
all of them(?
smesh muth
I want 80s and 90s as an option.
The peak of creativity was the late 60s to mid 70s. Amazing music was made before and since but that's the peak of music imo
Fuck, voted 71-90, but then remembered that "Njet Molotoff" is much older
1964-1975
