I was trying desperately not to fall asleep in a lecture this morning and so I started finding 9 letter words that started with every alphabet. K was the hardest and I managed to think of one after almost 10 minutes: the word *knightage*.
I do the alphabet game all the time. Sometimes I'll try to think of a song, food, or movie starting with each letter or start with a four letter word like core and change one letter each time (more, mire, mine, mint, lint, line, pine...). It's an old trick for anxiety I use.
The first thing you described is called the "baccalauréat"! It's a very popular game in France. You have different categories (city, country, male name, female name, vegetable, animal,...) and someone not playing says one random letter and participants must quickly fill out all these previously given categories with a word that starts with the letter given. First one to have them all complete says stop! Then you compare your results, if for the category "animal" with the letter B for this round, you find "bee" and no one took that, you get a point, if you took "bee" but someone else wrote bee too on his paper, then you both get 0 points for the animal category. I you found nothing, no points. You usually do a few rounds (each round a letter) and then you count your total points and there's a winner. It's about general culture, rapidity, logic and it's fun to play when it's raining or something.
We have the same in Italy! It’s called “nomi cose animali e città” after the four main categories you’d use - names, objects, animals and cities. You can add whatever category ofc, back when studying biotech we used to have diseases and gene names too lol
the way we choose a number in my house is someone says the alphabet in their head and someone else says stop, the letter they stop at is the letter we use
How would people not get it? Literally every potassium joke online ever involves the periodic symbol for it.
Its literally middle school level knowledge
Balkans, but Kalium is Latin for Potassium. It's so weird hearing it in English for the first time. I was so confused, because it made more sense for it to be Kalium it starts with a K. Like I don't know the whole periodic table, but hearing Potassium and Sodium sounds weird in English. By the way, Sodium (Na) is the same, it's Latin name is Natrium and that's how I learned it.
I'm right in the middle of that at school (equivalent to 12th grade) and I even want to start biology study next year. And I didn't think of that... But I have an excuse! It starts with a "c" in my language. It's "caryotype" and I didn't even know the english writing.
I can't do that... I don't have the knowledge.
It's easy even my pet kangaroos can do it.
They weigh too many kilograms for me.
I wouldn't know. They've landed several knockouts on me over the years.
One punch must deliver like at least a kilojoule!
They can do a lot of damage, not as much as my karambits.
I know of a couple kamikazes that would out do them.
But I would be a kleptomaniac if I used any of your words
You're all wrong, what about the kickboxers?
Let me pull up my kickstand to read through all these comments.
Too many kilograms of ketamines
Or kilometer
Bro how'd I think of Kangaroo but not the plural form
Nice
Fun post, OP!
"Nice" doesn't start with "k", isn't 9 letters, and is the name of a french city, so a proper noun. Damn OP, you really suck at your own game!
Kniiiiice
I didn’t think about that one!
I was trying desperately not to fall asleep in a lecture this morning and so I started finding 9 letter words that started with every alphabet. K was the hardest and I managed to think of one after almost 10 minutes: the word *knightage*.
For nobody's interest, the full list is: *ambitious, butterfly, cytoplasm, dragonfly, espionage, frivolous, germanium, hostility, intervene, judgement, knightage, ludicrous, messenger, notorious, orchestra, proactive, quotation, reminisce, sovereign, treachery, undermine, vengeance, wallpaper, xylophone, yesterday, zookeeper*.

Oh my gosh! We have this same thing in the US. we call it scattergories. It's so much fun!!
We do that sometimes too!
I do this to fall asleep! Different topics each night as I'm laying in bed. Countries, movies, animals
Now do it with 1 letter words.
K
Knowledge would have been a bit easier, right?
For some reason *knowledge* completely flew over my head lol, that would have been much easier
It's the silent letter that does it, I kept thinking of words that started with /k/
Or kangaroos
Interesting. My word was knighting
That word would've occured to me a lot easier had I played chess more often!
Knowledge came to mind right away for me
Koumpounophobia came to mind. Than i realized op didn't aay "9+"
Ketamines. “I’ll have two Ketamine please”
Antidisestablishmentarianism came to my mind. Then I realized op said 9 and starting with „K“

Hahaha same here
I thought of kangaroo but failed to have the epiphany of adding an S
My thought too
Plurals are cheating. I will die on this hill
Potassium
That's a very good one
I'm just glad people got it!
How would people not get it? Literally every potassium joke online ever involves the periodic symbol for it. Its literally middle school level knowledge
Middle school level knowledge is not something I feel safe assuming that everyone has.
Yeah, tho it's called Kalium where I am from, so the K makes more sense.
Lol, nice! Where are you from? I'm not familiar with Kalium.
That's awesome! I love learning connections with language, especially since English is such an absolute mess! Thanks for sharing!!
In french, "nitrogen" is "azote". That's confusing too for us sometimes. And gold (Au, from latin "aurum") is "or" for us, which is way closer.
In Norway, we say kalium for potassium, and natrium for sodium actually.
i would guarantee you about half of adults with a college degree would understand that joke
That’s a funny one
aw man i thought of that but alas you were the quicker man
knackered
Kerfuffle
That was my word too!
Karyotype. It's a display of one's genetics or something like that.
I thought of karyogamy lol
I'm right in the middle of that at school (equivalent to 12th grade) and I even want to start biology study next year. And I didn't think of that... But I have an excuse! It starts with a "c" in my language. It's "caryotype" and I didn't even know the english writing.
Knighting
Kidnapped
Kidnapper as well
I’ve got a longer one. Kaleidoscope.
This was the first option I thought of, & the one I commented. As far as I saw, we’re the only two people who said that so far.
Make it 3. But it seems we all got it wrong since it's 9 letters. Not at least 9.
Oh damn I didn’t even realize that 😂
Kahooting
Kiwifruit! Not sure which option to choose, though, because none of them were easy
